I feel old...
I picked up this game on Goozex and patched it up for online play... sadly no one is playing. Why did I ever think it would be cool to have a wrestler's name as my nickname? Last edited by DDP; Jun 15, 2008 at 04:39 PM. |

HA HA HA! Heck yes! I remember that OS when I was in preschool as well as 1st and early 2nd grade. That was definitely the OS I grew up with. I remember playing SuperKarts, a racing DOS game that was developed in the United Kingdom when we got our first Win98 PC way back in 1998 when I was 4 years old. *sighs* Memories...
![]() For those of you are wondering, I first played Jazz Jackrabbit in about 2001 I believe...or maybe that was 2002.... *shrugs* |

I grew up with Win 95 and some ancient version of Red Hat Linux

I grew up with old plain MS-DOS 6.0 including Windows 3.1 (cause that was used at my home and first school lol). My next computer used Windows98 and that was the one I started playing JJ2 on when it was released in 1998. And I haven't used any version of Linux other than Ubuntu (one year ago).

You know what's wierd?
If I recall right... I think Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was originally intended for use on Windows 95, as it was announced in Winter of 1995 (I think.) shortly after the very last episode of Jazz Jackrabbit 1 was released, which was Holiday Hare 95. And I believe was going to come out about 1996. But it was delayed two years ahead towards 1998. However, on the back of the case, it still said it was intended for Windows 95, even though you could pretty much run every Windows 95 program in Windows 98. This was probably due to the terrors of Internet Explorer 4 that were going about back in the day that made Win95 based computers slow as heck. |

I wish new Windows versions had such great compatibilities with older programs.
Anyway, I think it's weird that JJ2's title bar doesn't get the XP theme (at least not for me) which sucks if you try to click its title bar buttons: XP's (themeless) buttons are thinner and they only become visible over the 'traditionally big' JJ2 title bar buttons when you click them. So I have to click the left part of the maximize button to minimize JJ2, which I happen to forget all the time.

I always set my Windows theme on the classic style cause I don't give for a stylish workspace in my OS.. But somehow, and I'm talking serious, I kind of miss the old Windows9x versions. XP is stable and all, but 98 had full DOS support and no useless and bugging new 'features' and updates. Anything older than Win2k is currently considered unsupported, as current hardware won't be compatible with Windows9x (especially graphics adapters, drivers, and hardware connections). On the other hand, I'm kind of surprised that Jazz2 does still run on Vista (NT 6.0) other than sound issues on the WindowsMM driver.

Sometimes I miss 98 too =( Tho most of these bugging new features can simply be put away by disabling their services (Start->Run->services.msc)

Maybe 10 years ago. But how would JCS work on DOS?

They didn't plan on releasing a level editor from the very start, I figure.

I really wonder how JJ2 chooses the tiles it displays in the title bar on caption.

Always wondered what that thing did. Now, what happens if you don't set any captions?

Does that mean you have a bigger resolution, or a smaller window, or what?

Very.
Anyway, this is not about 1998 vs 2008 anymore. So to get things back ontopic, ... okay someone else may get it back ontopic this time.

Guess that someone will be me..
If I remember this correctly, wasn't Jazz2 originally supposed to be played on 320x200, or in other words the DOS resolution, aswell? When playing the OEM version, you can still see backgrounds and other level design made for a resolution lower than 640x480. Also, Jazz2 on DOS is an interesting thought. It would have given us way less compatibility at the time when Win2k/XP became popular without DOSBox being invented yet lol, but some of the computers I've used in 1998 were unable to run JJ2 cause those still used Windows3.1 and DOS.

Thank God it's not a DOS game, we wouldn't be here right now then I think.

I could be asking the same question- this is the first time I've joined a forum relating to the JJ games and it is nice to know that the games still have an active player base. Although I have not played JJ2 very much, JJ1 was by far one of my favorite games years ago.
