I'm many years late, but nostalgia hit hard recently, so I wanted to write this out - mostly for myself, but if you're reading, feel free to react or comment.
Back then, I may have come off like an a--, but honestly, that was a defense mechanism. I was a teenager, and a few people's disingenuous behavior got under my skin. This post is long, blog-style - so treat it like a time capsule from the 2000s. ⸻ The Revisionism Problem (2009 Onward) Around 2009, there seemed to be an odd push - especially from some members of Cracco Clan - to rewrite history and downplay my place in the top tier of JJ2 duelists from the 2000s. Sadly, even some otherwise decent folks went along with that narrative. A lot of this revisionism felt personal rather than evidence-based. Some players simply couldn't let go of grudges or the version of the story that fit their preferences. I've held back from sharing my side for years, but I realize now: if I don't document it, it'll vanish. ⸻ The "R3p was a lagger" Myth Let's clear this up. Players who claimed I lagged often name-dropped SkulL and North Americans like DizZy, FireSworD, or Blackraptor in the same post, without issue. That's inconsistent: 1. SkulL and I shared the exact same connection. If I was a lagger, so was he. 2. NA players like FS, DizZy, and Blacky had higher average ping (our 100-150ms vs. their 300+ms to Europe). Yet they were never labeled "laggers" despite often being harder to play against due to distance and latency. 3. Much of DizZy's peak came during the 56k modem era, while I was already on ADSL/cable. So why was I singled out? It doesn't hold up technically, and the pattern points more to personal bias than any objective measure. ⸻ On SkulL and Fairness SkulL was my best friend in JJ2. We played countless matches, no excuses, no lag advantages. Our duels were always close, and whoever won usually depended on the map and mindset that day. I said in 2006 - and stand by it - that we were equals. So when people list only one of us as "top tier", it doesn't make sense, especially if they've faced us both. Tournament rankings and duel records from 2015-2016 back this up. I can provide links if needed. ⸻ Rivalries and Grudges Enig was solid, but once I hit my peak (around year 3), I consistently beat him. It was never about lag - just smarter plays and better adaptation. I guess he didn't enjoy losing to me, which may have colored his perspective. It's easier to accept a loss to someone like FireSworD or DizZy, socially speaking. More controversially: Veg and Gry were reportedly using cheat tools like bigjazz - this came up multiple times and was even corroborated by some CC members. I also saw a 2006 thread where they ranked me highly, next to themselves. So their later decision to leave me out feels more like selective memory or recency bias. ⸻ Tourney Records and Final Legacy I've reviewed countless 1v1 tourney threads over the past few weeks. Across the board, FS, SJ, Veg, and I were at the top consistently. While Veg's legacy has since been questioned due to those cheat allegations, my record stands on its own. This stuff may not matter anymore (at least publicly), but for me it brought long-needed closure. I was gone from JJ2 for 14 years, and I always wondered whether my contributions would quietly fade, and that never sat right with me. I was young, competitive, and didn't know how to express myself back then. So here it is. ⸻ Objective Duelist Ranking (Based on Tournament History) 1. FireSworD 2. SuperJazz (still one of the best to this day) 3. R3ptile aka spaceboy 4. SkulL 5. Blacky 6. Snooze 7. CelL 8. Squirrel Thanks for indulging this trip down memory lane. Just felt like the right time to set the record straight. Last edited by spejsboi; Jun 16, 2025 at 06:22 AM. |
