State of video gaming today

Earlier today I was just looking at the people who play the games I do, and I was disgusted. All people say to each other anymore is ***** and ****** ** *** ***(Derby proofed). Have people completly lost the joy that they once had in playing video games?

And another thing. I'm looking at the video game's today and I feel kind of sad. Show me 1 mainstream non childrens game today where the box art shows somebody smiling, not an evil smile, and I'll give you $50.

And Jazz 2 hasn't gotten off easy either. Just looking at how some of the clans treat each other, its pathetic. It's a game, its supposed to be fun. Not a zealous ongoing war against other people.

Just felt like sharing my opinion. Thats all.

$50 eh? Well I happen to have a GameCube game that I'm holding right now that has people smiling on it (Non-evilly) and it's not a kids game. It's Called Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2.

That picture has a bit of it. The people smiling are those that are in the background. They are purplish. 1 to the bottom left, and one to the right (In a big poofy hat)

You've got a point there, and I especially have to agree about the box art thing. *points at WC3: TFT* evil grin...WC3 RoC had a warcry...
And that's only an example.

all i got to say is that gaming has gone down the toilet, all that (most) people buy gaming systems for is that one football game (you know the one, you probably have it)

that or

nowadays everyone only cares about 1 thing,
Graphics, graphics, graphics.

has storyline become a thing of the past?
why are gaming companies pooping out such crappy games?

AHHHHH!!!!

IN THE WORDS OF TREY KINCAIDE (from the game Apocalypse, trey was played by bruce willis)

THAT'S IT! I'M OUTTA HERE....

Well, I can pretty much tell you WHY people act so stupid nowadays when playing games..... because they can get away with it!

Just think, in the old days if your opponent was acting like a pain in the neck, you'd just turn sideways and punch him in the face. And that right then and there, solved that problem.

look here for more info.

And I think that the biggest problem with games today is that kids nowadays have only had good graphics to look at. So even if confronted with a good older game, they may not like it because it doesn't "look good". Had they had to grow up in an 8-bit (or even less) era, some of them would probably think a few things differently than they do now.

I mean after all... back in my day we had games with 2 colors, and one was black, with charcters made out of squares. And we were thankful for it.

yeah...

Everybody says "Final Fantasy 7 is the best in the series" When it's the first FF game to be full 3d. They say that because they're brainwashed.

Everybody knows the best FF game is FF6, Not only did it have good graphics, but also a good STORYLINE!

Secret of Mana was another good one. The only game to make me cry near the end, where the hero finds out tha...I shouldn't spoil it. Go play it. Now.

Zelda has become very bad nowadays...Once Zelda went 3d it spoiled everything: The story, the graphics, the gameplay...IMHO the best Zelda game has to be Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. That game Roxx. Followed by a close second with OoT and OoA on the GBC. XD That game was great.

The best RPG game ever has to be Golden Sun...And Spanx hasn't heard of it. I got AIM log to prove it.

This is my priorities for games:
1) Gameplay
2) Story (if applicable)
3) Length or Repeat Playablity
4) Graphics

Why I don't like First Person Shooters is because their priorities are:

1) Graphics
2) Gameplay
3) Length
4) Story (Not applicable)

Yeah.

And stuff.

You mean to tell me that there is no storyline in UT99? I loved it's story: You are a young warrior, trying to claw your way up to the top of the ladder with your allies, or destroying them in the process. XD

And I like the shooters that have Gameplay over Graphics. IF the graphics suck but the handling is incredible and there are an array of weapons to use (like UT99, which have 12 weapons) and realistic physics...I like it.

That's why I hated Jet Force Gemini...Too much storyline, not enough gameplay.

That and the MGS series.

Storyline and gameplay have to be balanced. It's like a spectrum; movie is on one end, board game is on the other. Computer game is in between, and the farther from the middle the game is, the more it sucks.

Exactly, Rad.

I think the perfect game would be one with the gameplay of Jak and daxter with a FF6 storyline, and online play capabilitys and a level building program that comes with it.

Yeah.

And stuff.

ED:SR is dead in the middle...

It's like a action thriller movie that you control, but the cutscenes are with the dialouge. XD

Eh, I wouldn't say that. The main thing you think of here is: Who wants to play some cutesy game that has a happy ending and the hero hasn't gone through some tragedy or another?

Animal Crossing is a game with things smiling. ;P

Anyways-- No. Violent, bloody, gorey games are fun! Come on. Who doesn't like to take out their stress on a puny alien with a big rocket launcher?

My priorities in gaming, however, stay the same:

Controls/Gameplay
Storyline
Graphics

Graphics are nice. Like in Battlefield 1942-- you're sniping someone (Come on Unhit, help me out with this one, heh) and would you rather see two boxes for legs, three for feet, one for the head, two box arms, two boxes for the hands, et cetra et cetra. No. I wouldn't. But-- if the handling was great, which the game does have fantastic controls in my opinion, I'll deal with it.

Some games don't really need a story line, either. It's just a nice addition that adds some flavour to it. Shooters don't need a whole lot of story line for me to enjoy them. Graphics are good, controls are superb, story line is crap-- I'm happy. I just have to grit my teeth and bear the crappy story line.

Take Castlevania: Lament of Innocence for example. The game is not yet released, but the graphics and controls look promising. The story line is cheesy as all get up, 'Sara, I'm coming for you'. Yeah. But-- wow, the eye candy, the controls... more importantly the battle system.. it looks good.

Final Fantasy X was purely graphics and the fantastic battle system. The story line, in my honest opinion, was pretty good. Not the best, but it was good. I cried at the end, so I give it that it had human character and made me cry. Good point there. The graphics were top notch. The gameplay was high up there too. All it needed was the job system. The voice overs were kind of crappy, but then and again, it's voice overs. You can't want everything. It'd be like a good anime show if Square had allowed you to chose from voice overs or subtitles (Tidus's voice got on my nerves sometimes...)

Now, Warcraft 3 is an all around good game. The strategy was done well, it's challenging. The heros add spice to it as well. I thought the story line was good, though at times a bit tedious (like with the Undead Scourge, you constantly had to go get this and get that.). The graphics in the cinematic scenes were stunning and the sound quality to go with them was pretty darn good. It made it realistic and believable. You dig?

Anyways.... *shrugs*

I think some games have gone down the tubes. I mean, there isn't much that seems original any more.

Well, i myself collect classic gaming systems and games, so i do know what it is like to have a black and white game.

Hell! i have the Odessey (first gaming system ever, you can read about it here )

but i do agree, if you didn't grow up on 8 bit or less, you might be excused, but i still say the ones who make 'em, not the ones who play 'em, are to blame, they just make games for the hell of it now. look at squaresoft, they used to make decent games, and now we have such sucky-crap as Kingdom Hearts.

AHHH!!!!!

This isn't true, the storyline is actually very straight forward, if you didn't get it, then i feel sorry for you. You missed out on a good game. (not to say it is the best, it was just a good one. The best FF was #3 on the nes, not super nes.)

Ranting over.

Yea, well.... yea. Don't blame me, I'm just a programmer. :P Actually as a programmer, I might be able to effect the interface, controls, graphics, and gameplay. Although, actually making those things good is easier said than done. A game is pretty much doomed if the game doesn't have a good design to begin with, so I like to blame the designers most of the time.

I did get everything.
But sure, if you think it was so simple, explain what happened to Cloud, why he thought he was a Soldier, why Tifa knew him, etc. Have fun.

cloud thought he was in soldier because he had been re animated by hojo and was a failed clone of sephiroth, he was given the memories that made him think he was in soldier.

tifa knew him because he had lived next door to her when they were kids, hojo had used cloud's body for experimentation after he died, and thus tifa knew him, if you payed attention to the storyline tifa says

"you seemed different, but i wanted to keep you around so that's why i mentioned the AVALANCHE job. I missed you cloud, i wanted to know what had happened to you."

or something along those lines.

BUT SHE DOES SAY THAT NEAR THE END OF THE 2ND DISC! (on playstation, not computer, i don't know what disc on computer)

Almost, except no.
Cloud didn't die.

Okayokay, lemme explain.
Cloud was some guy who grew up in the same town as Tifa. He wanted to be a Soldier, but never came to be one. Instead, he became a normal little dude with a gun and nothing special. Bla.
The guy whose memory he had WAS a member of Soldier, Zack. HE died being killed by other Soldiers, and Cloud then got his memory...
I'm sure all that is right, but right now, i can't remember it all either..

um, if you remeber correctly, cloud was struck down by sephiroth as he (sephiroth) was leaving the reactor, sephiroth ran him through, but cloud using the last of his strength threw sephiroth over the walkway and into the reactor, thus killing sephiroth at the same time.

cloud was killed in that very reactor.

But yeah, ow that you mention it.. that would explain how Hojo got him.
...no, wait.... the guy WAS Zack... lemme think...

Ah, yes.
Sephiroth WAS killed - erm.. defeated by Cloud. But Cloud is not the one he thinks he is, he's the soldier who took care that Tifa didn't enter the reactor...
Jee, this is confusing.

kinda, but not as confusing as you think.
if you play it mulitple times, it makes more and more sense each time.
at least it did for me.

also, yes cloud was the soldier that kept tifa out of the reactor, but then when sephiroth went back, tifa went in before cloud, cloud saw what sephiroth did to her, and he (cloud) was struck down while dispatching sephiroth.

it's probably confusing because there were two versions of the story in the game, what cloud thaught it was, and what it really was.

i go by what it says later in the game, not what it says in kalm.

I think you are all wrong. Cloud was a stup whiny loser face in soldier, but he killed sepherwhatever. He barely survived, and stole zacks identity, to make himself feel like a sucsess. He was an embaressed loser face, but tols everyone he was going to be an uber 1337 killer, but he was in shame of his suxorness.

Gaming is turning into a proffesional sport. Paid, ViP parties, Sponsorships etc..

Pro-Game scenes are StarCraft, WarCraft 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal 2k3 and ofcourse the main game CounterStrike.

Upcomming pro-games: Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Halo - HalfLife 2?

Bleeding pro-games: Unreal 2k3, Quake 3 Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, StarCraft

Is it fun? depends.. for some-people it's starting to be a real job because they get "huge" paid by their sponsors and they have awesome winnings at high prio tournaments.

For me it's fun to play at the top level on your game and getting something in return. But I don't call me or myclan a proffesional gamer because i don't get paid. But we do get sponsored to be at the events (plane tickets etc) and we can keep our price money. It's also fun with all the fame and glamour around it.. I like it

Obviously he doesn't.

Cloud was a mercenary. He was in SOLDIER with Sephiroth, who was a top, top SOLDIER. But Sephiroth, upon visiting a town, became engrossed in his past, blah blah blah. Then, yearsss later, Cloud sets out as a mercenary, blah blah blah happens, and he winds up with a party, out to kill the evil Sephiroth. So, shoot me, it's been about four years since I played the game. ;p

Lot's 'O Reading...

i was just passing by when i noticed your misunderstanding or ff7 this may get a little redundant but if you would just listen it is quite simple.err...........
cloud was the dirty kid of the neighborhood who no one talked to. on the day tifa's mother died, cloud finaly worked up the courage to go into tifa's house. tifa decided that her mother went over mt.nibel because everyone who goes there never comes back. upon entering tifa's three friends left . cloud was the only one to follow her to the summit. they soon ran into a freak accident on the bridge....(sound farmiliar).after this tifa's father blamed cloud for this. cloud realised he was too weak to protect her and thought if he got stronger than she would notice him. thats when he first learned about solder. in a sudden descision cloud called tifa out to the well where he told her about leaving for SOLDIER.they made the promise and that was that. well needless to say cloud didn't even make SOLDIER 3rd class, he instead gained the rank of MP returning ashamed, cloud hid his identity from tifa until the reactor incident. sephiroth thwaked zack after he tore tifa a new one.sephiroth was plesently suprised when he was bludgened by zacks sword from behind by a lowly MP ......of course this was cloud. pushing his luck, cloud then decided to try to finish sephiroth(stupid move) Well.....needless to say cloud found himself staring down the cold steel of the masamune!.he used the last of his strength to finish sephiroth only to later die. shinra later rebuilt the town as a coverup, and began work on the cloning or sephiroth which is simply injecting cells into the revived body of cloud. at feeding time zack made his escape with the comatose cloud. upon reaching midgar(this part is interesting because in the picture, sector seven has allready fallen). zack is gunned down by MPs leaving cloud thinking he was already dead. cloud then ran into tifa where she said "long time no see cloud." well, to cap things off it turns out sephiroth was mis-led. he wasn't the clone of jenova, but the lowly son of hojo and lucretia thus sephiroth did this of his own free will..........err thank you for reading and i hope there is no more confusion
