Question Yes, I got the patch, and I STILL need help!

Okay, I went and followed everyone's instructions: I edited my Gateway settings because yes, I am, indeed, in a LAN gateway service. I got the new patches, etc., as well as taken some drastic measure I won't go into here. Yet, still, when I try to do an Internet Play, it says "error connecting to list servers" or something and asks to enter an address. Thus, I pop open Notepad and open a .J2I file and copy the IP from there and put it in, and it just flashes "pinging" repeatedly. I've waited over three hours, believe me, and it STILL just flashes "pinging." I'm thinking this may hafta do with how I'm using Windows 95, but I'm not behind a Firewall or anything, so I don't know what else it could be. If you have a suggestion, lemme know.

Well, I'm not quite sure, but maybe you need Winsock? If memory serves, it wasn't in Windows95...

...I don't remember too much about it... but...

Winsock (if memory serves), allows Windows programs to access the internet through a variety of ways, thus enhancing capabilities, etc.

Or the only server that was online was the CC*stupid 403 error*server, and that seems to always be pinging.

Well, I Googled it. It's a DLL file, if this is the Winsock you were referring to. Well, I got it, and it didn't seem to help. I STILL can't connect and let it show the List Servers. Or DO you have to type in the IP to get it up, no matter what?

XD That's what the TITLE OF THIS THREAD SAID CLEARLY. Is it not!? Unless I'm blind, that is....

If yer curious, I'm using 1.23 s. As in, the Shareware. I actually have 2 versions installed on my computer, but one is illegal and it's 1.00, which is REALLY nonsensical to me. It's probably a prerelease.

I can alo "host my own games," but it won't appear on the Active Games list on the website and no one can join, so it's just me capturing flags. Over and over and over again. It's sad, really.

Okay, okay, okay... Sorry. I mistaked it for, you installed 1.23.

Since it's shareware, then there's not really many people who would join you anyway. Sorry... But if you've got DSL... You might wanna check your Gateway (if you have one) and your modem (if you have DSL). That may help for the server de-listing.

EDIT: Oh, and if you've got shareware, you can't join registered games, etc.

OHHHH. XD Now I get itttt.

Well, I think Epic no longer accepts ordering of the full version, so can I download it anywhere for free? Because I may be able to get one off eMule, but I don't have eMule on this computer. Darnit, accursed low disc space!

Because I don't wanna hafta go looking on eBay. That's just plain tedious.

No you can't, discontinuation doesn't mean it's freeware, despite what you all believe Downloading the full JJ2 version is still illegal and not supported by this board.

And any version below v. 1.20 is an alpha or beta version.

Yep. Believe it or not, it's g, the Abandonware version. I think it's the Beta. It lacks the intro and end clips/credits, which makes me sad. Because I like those, darnit.

I think I'm gonna go beg for money or do some commissions so I can get the cash I need. I hate doing illegal things. *Grumbles*

g is OEM, not abandonware for my knowledge.

And there's a lot of other stuff in v1.00g than just lack of cutscenes.

I believe it easily, because g is the most common OEM.

OEM..? Excuse me for being the idiot I am, but can you tell me what that stands for/means? XD I got it from Abandonia, so I just assumed it was Abandonware and either a Beta or an Alpha.

And yeah, like ya can't capitalize letters, ya get stuck in walls, it doesn't have the "Home-Cooked Levels" set of levels...

And if it's the most common OEM, like Unknown Rabbit says it is, I'd like an explanation of what other versions there are and what/why they are that. Like what the g stands for, et cetera.

The good thing about g is that the song files are directly in the folder, so you can rip them. I'm a bad person.

Well, it's pretty easy. The 1.00 series were sort of "Work in progress" versions. The version numbering was 1.00A till 1.00Z. And as far as I know so far only 1.00G, 1.00H and 1.00O (?) have been found.

The versions that actually were officially released started from 1.20. And then of course there was a 1.21 and 1.23 patch. I think 1.22 was only on CD releases. 1.21, 1.22 and 1.23 are all compatible with eachother when it comes to online play.

I think someone accidentally put the wrong version on his abandonware site (abandonware is illegal in most cases, in case you don't know) and that's how it got spread across the internet.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The OEM version of a piece of software is that which is exclusively made for and packaged with new computer systems. OEM software it isn't (supposed to be) distributed any other way. And usually it has more features than the standard shareware/demo version, but still isn't the full version.

Well, I could understand it being packed with new computers, because that's how I first discovered the original JJ. It wasn't an OEM, though; it was the usual normal Shareware issue, but with an extra set of levels. Okay, so maybe it WAS an OEM. I have no idea.

This one doesn't have any extra features and, in fact, I'd consider it having even less. I'd also consider it the full version, but just in the earlier stages, thus lacking the format of files the newer ones had and lacking the glitch-fixes and cutscenes.

I don't doubt what you say, but with a different JJ2 logo and the lack of the "shareware" label, I don't consider this a shareware-style OEM. I believe it to be what you say other than the fact it doesn't quite zip into all those categories.

But I digress.

This wasn't supposed to be about describing my version of JJ2, but about getting the full version. *Scoots off to eBay*

I assume you had an Acer if you had that extra set of levels, as that's how I first met Jazz Jackrabbit. But I too, digress. That OEM version is a beta... not Shareware by any means. But there are some differences between it and Jazz 2 1.20 and up. In fact there's an article about it.

Yep, one of my first PCs was an Aspire Acer! ^_^ It also came with games like Tyrian 2000, Epic Pinball, Hover... *Reminisces* Yeah, I miss that version. I oughtta go hunt around and see if I can find it, considering it was technically a shareware and downloading shareware fo free, no matter what the circumstance, is legal.

I think I'm gonna go and take a peek at that there article. :3

Yep, that sounds like an OEM version. :P

I first learned of Jazz Jackrabbit from the games that came with our Acer computer as well.

I looked at that article, and it described my version, word-for-word. That's why I think mine is better than the normal JJ2. It's just cooler, and it has that song for the second Colonius level, and I don't think it's complete without that. I think I'm gonna go type up an argument about that.

As a rule of thumb you can usually order OEM software from the likes of eBuyer and dabs as long as you buy some hardware at the same time. I don't think it matters what hardware you buy - a floppy drive will do.

I suppose you can be counted as an OEM if you built your own computer, as then you are the original manufacturer of the computer. About the only downside to OEM hardware is it tends to be just the bit of kit you ordered and no fancy packaging or installation guides. If you're lucky you'll get a driver disc.

I had a talk with my dad about OEMs and I was really surprised with how interested he was in this community. I asked about gettin JJ2 for my birthday, and he's considering it. He's ever amazed at my computer ability, especially when I'm only in High School. Oh Dad, you lovely little philosopher.

If I have any difficulties with JJ2 if/after I get it, I'll let ya all know here. :3
