Jazz and the Wicked Witch

A story by Nightshade.

Yes, Nightshade is writing again! She'd probably post this herself, but she lost her password, or so she tells me. You can ask to join, but I can't guarantee that you'll be added.

The sun rose, bright and brilliant, over the planet of Carrotus. Wind rushed gaily through the leaves of the forests, spinning lazily through meadows and swooping low to dive through cool springs of water. Red and gold sunlight crept slowly through the leafy canopies as the sun came up fully, presenting its smiling face to the world.
Lamps and lights flickered off as the rays swept over the incline of a hill to rest their gaze upon an enormous metropolis: Carrotus City. Buildings rose high into the air and traffic roared through the skies as the bustling behavior usually found in cities began. Skyscrapers shot upward to touch the very heavens, and large, complex hotels came just short of the high apartment buildings. However, the splendor of these buildings was diminished as to a dust mote next to a bottle of Windex as the magnificence of the Carrotan Castle came into view. Spiralling almost beyond view, the enormous castle shone with a golden light; and, fluttering boldly on the highest point of the tallest spire was a flag. Blue in color, it depicted a carrot with a green C surrounding it.
The inside was no less magnificent. Great staircases of incredible proportions spiralled upward to the luxurious top floors, or downward to the dank dungeons. These dungeons were the 'finest' in all of Carrotus, and were said to be of the highest security. Only the very worst of criminals were ever kept there, as the dungeon itself was said to be inescapable. Not one of the prisoners that had ever stayed there had, though not from lack of trying, pulled off such a feat. At least, not until ...
The guard came running up from the dungeons, clanking painfully to a halt and waving his arms frantically. "Help! Help! The prisoner has escaped!"
Jazz Jackrabbit, a green rabbit and also, incidentally, the Prince of Carrotus, came racing down the stone steps from his chambers, in his pyjamas, to see what all the commotion was about. He ran smack-dab into the panicking guard and reeled back, clutching his head.
"What prisoner?" he gasped, dropping his hands.
"Devan Shell, sir!"
Jazz's head came up with a start. "What?!?" he yelped. "Who did this?"
"Him!"
Jazz's gaze followed the guard's armored arm to a red-and-yellow bunny who was staggering into walls with his tongue stuck out and his eyes rolling madly.
"Spaz?" Jazz asked incredulously. The guard nodded fearfully, cringing as he replied.
"Y-yessir."
Jazz turned ghostly pale.
"Oh, no ..."

More tomorrow, as usual.

*agrees*

At the trial which inevitably ensued, the judge addressed Spaz, who was wheeling around in his spin-chair, directly.
"You have been accused or allowing Carrotus' most feared enemy to escape. You may even be in league with him. Have you anything to say, to defend yourself with, before the jury gives a verdict?"
For an answer, Spaz leapt up, dodged to the judge's pulpit, grabbed the gavel from its resting place, clobbered himself over the head and shouted, "PIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" at the top of his voice. Then he staggered back to his seat, tripping over a bench and falling on his nose. He abruptly got up and plopped himself down in his spin chair again, looking extremely pleased with himself.
The judge had a quiet conversation with the jury, and then turned back to Spaz again.
"The jury has reached a verdict. You, Spaz Jackrabbit, have been convicted of helping Mr. Shell escape. However, as you do not seem at your best at such a time as this, you will be given a choice of options. You may either spend the next seventeen years of your life in a high-security prison, or you may pay a sum of 1,000 Carrotan credits to me, as an act of good faith, you understand, and recapture Devan Shell!"
Spaz grinned and ate a bird.
Then he dashed over to the astonished judge and plopped a thousand Carrotan credits into his hand and fell over, goggling at the dust motes.
"Very well," the judge said with as much dignity as he could muster, given the circumstances. "Be on your way, then."
Spaz let out a snore and woke up. He got to his feet, flicked an invisible dust particle from his shoulder, and weaved out the door with a muffled, "Fankoo".
Jazz followed his brother out the door and into the street where he climbed into the shining black speeder that was waiting for them and ordered the driver to take him to the castle. Halfway there, Jazz happened to look out the window and see a broomstick zoom past with a gnarled green lady seated atop it. He did a double take and ordered the driver to stop. Spaz looked at him questioningly as the driver pulled over to the side of the road.
Jazz flung open the door and jumped out, staring in the direction that the strange object had been headed. Spaz poked his head out, apparently still waiting for an answer. Just then, the broomstick wheeled high overhead, and a spell splatted against the sidewalk next to Jazz. He jumped in surprise and, wasting no more time, dashed to the back of his speeder and yanked open a hatch, whereupon he pulled out a small contraption.
It looked like a snowboard, except it had jets on the bottom and a small speedometer beside the straps for his feet. This was his high-velocity, top-of-the-line, 2004 brand-name airboard. He slammed the hatch shut and ordered the speeder to bear Spaz to the castle.

Hilda the Witch shot past the Carrotus Castle on her tattered broomstick. She shot a spell at a passing rabbit, who croaked and turned into a frog. She cackled with glee and zipped by the panicking rabbittoad, who was hopping frantically up and down in one spot on the sidewalk.
The entire of Carrotus' main city was in an uproar, and it was all her fault. Chaos reigned in the air and on the ground as screaming rabbits fled her spells and potions, many of them turning into croaking toads simultaneously. Jazz was powerless to stop her now, she thought. Eva could NEVER kiss ALL those toads!
A gleaming red airboard roared past her. Jazz was crouched on it, his ears flapping and the ends of his red bandanna streaming out behind him. He glanced at the witch, then swerved his airboard to collide with her. She shot a spell at him, but he swerved to the side and hit his airboard instead.
Very suddenly, he found himself riding a frog - who was now falling at an alarming rate to the pavement, far below.

In case you haven't realized, this is actually for those unaquainted with JJ2 - namely the grandparents. So there will likely be some unrequired explanations.

So, you're saying this is a retelling of JJ2? Or at least the shareware episode?

No. I think it's just after JJ2, but she includes lots of explanations that we don't need, like the airboard. She had a quick overview of JJ1 and JJ2 at the beginning, but I didn't think it was necessary, especially on this board =)

She got the witch idea from the shareware episode, yes, but I don't believe this is based on the shareware in any way except for including the witch.

I think it's basically like T4W, like 4I said. We on the forum don't need these explanations, but if anyone not from the forum were to read this, they would be completely lost if it weren't for the explanations.

So true.

Short, cuz I don't have much time.

Two days later, Jazz woke up in the Carrotan hospital ward. The first thing that he saw was a pair of eyeballs staring at him. Then his vision panned out and he saw the face of Spaz, drool and all.
He scrambled back, but his restraints would only permit so far a back-scramble before they locked in place. Apparently he had been quite violent while unconscious. Spaz grinned, showing all his yellow teeth. He hopped up on Jazz's bed and brandished a key.
"HEY BRO!" he shrieked, "LOOK!" He dangled the keys in front of Jazz's face, then opened the restraints. Jazz bounced up.
"What're you still doing here? Aren't you going after Devan?"
"Yep!" Spaz pulled out a little Devan squeaky toy. "See?" he said, slightly more intelligible, "I got him!"
Jazz whapped himself on the forehead. "No, no! You idiot. That is NOT Devan!"
Spaz's face fell. "No Devan?" His lower lip began to tremble and his eyes brimmed with tears. Jazz threw up his hands in despair.
"Oh, don't cry. Remember Devan? The time-machine? Any of this a-ringin' a bell?"
You could see the lightbulb above Spaz's head turn on.
"Oooh! Dat Devan?"
He threw the squeaky toy in the garbage and ran out of the room. Jazz followed as quickly as possible.

And she has, so I may be able to save this thread.

While Spaz was running around after Devan, Jazz had a score to settle with the Wicked Witch. He found a spell-proof spaceship and had it transported to the launch pad at the castle. As quickly as he could, he readied it for combat and took off.
Reports had said that Hilda had left the planet in her ship, the Doomspinner. Now, seated in the Firefly, he made ready to pursue her.
It was a copper ship equipped with all sorts of weapons; grenade-launchers, heat-seeking rockets, IONs, lasers, and many other dangerous things. He had bought the best of the best: he just hoped it was enough.

Devan, meanwhile, was onboard his ship, planning (as usual) the destruction of Carrotus. The Devan's Brain was his capital ship, and thus well-armed. He had a plethora of turtle guards, twenty one-turtle fighters, twelve freighters, two Devan Destroyers and sixty probes, not including the vast number of transports for the infantry units and ground vehicles.
However, none of this was paid attention to, as Devan set his scheming brain into motion. He knew (or thought he knew) that Jazz was going to show up sooner or later to recapture him, and he was going to be ready. At the moment, he was going over each and every one of Jazz's usual tactics, and some hypothetical ones, too.
No dragon-shape would stop the green rabbit now, Jazz was far too cunning when he knew what he was up against. However, maybe a small bribe, or a threat? Nah, Jazz was too goody-goody-two-shoes and determined to succumb to either of those. A kidnap! Yes, that may bery well work. Devan grinned inwardly at the simplicity of his plan. He paged his second-in-command. The scrawny turtle, who was his nephew Bevan, arrived otuside immediately.
He looked like a turtle version of Spaz, except he wasn't crazy. Now he awaited Devan's orders ("yeah, nunky?") eagerly. Devan emerged from his room, waving his new plans excitedly. "Lookit this, Bev," he said happily.
An hour or so later, Devan finished briefing his nephew. Bevan was bouncing with glee at his uncle's newest masterpiece.
"So, nunky, whaddaya want me to do?"
Devan scowled at the younger turtle. "Don't call me 'nunky'. So, I want you to take the Rabbiteater and the Furless" - referring to two of the transports - "both full of troops ... and capture Princess Eva!"
