Description

This is a COMPLETE conversion of the first episode (which is free. There is nothing illegal here.) of Hocus Pocus. All the levels, all the tilesets, and all the music. However, the levels are the coolest part, so rate those, ok?
PLEASE READ THE README FILE. Otherwise, you may not understand stuff, and I want you to know what’s going on. (Oh, and feel free to use the tileset. You can do lots and lots of stuffness with it. :D(

WARNING: This pack contains a .j2e file, so you may have to delete an old one. Or just not unzip it. Whichever.
Patch: See http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6774 for more details. Oh, and it got patched again on April 23rd, by the way. Details are once again in that thread. And again on October 17, 2004. Thread.

Boy, this is pretty awesome!! Another old game converted to Jazz2! I got some special thanks in that cool outro…and i guess i know why. The whole thing reminds me pretty much of the Blues Brothers remake i tried with some guys (which i like a bit more, esspecially regarding the graphics, but that’s probably not your fault :-).
Unfortunataley, i don’t have the time to give a detailed review of the very good levels and tileset. But i hope i will be able to write one soon.
Then, i will eventually change my rating to fat NiNE POINTS then, too :-)
However, my first impression is that this is definitely one of the ALL TIME TOP 50 DOWNLOADS IN JAZZ2 HISTORY!

Wow! Nostalgia time! I had the full version of Hocus Pocus, and loved it. These levels are emulated perfectly! It must have taken a lot of work.

The trick with the switches is really cool, however I found it hard at times to flip them just right. Still, a minor complaint. And I also have some others, but they aren’t your fault. Stupid JJ2 drops fastfires from enemies, and makes the game too easy. Oh, and in the boss level, you can get hit while stomping the trigger crate.

The credits level at the end is worth beating the pack for, it is very cool and original.

It was great fun reliving the first episode of Hocus Pocus. Of course, Jazz jumps higher, but not as far, and runs much faster. But that cannot be avoided. Your enemy replacements were usually pretty good choices. Overall, I am very impressed. Great job. You know, I’d love to play the other episodes ;P. (Although they might be a bit more difficult to do, I’d imagine. Like elevators, for instance. Well, I’d give Jazz a hoverboard in the elevator shaft and have fly off zones at the exits.)

I know, we aren’t supposed to ask for the other episodes. Alright, fair enough. I’m still wondering how you converted this so well. Great job! A 9.2 for great levels, and lots of effort.

The uploading date is far back, but I never came to write a review. I just replayed, so here it shall be.

“Time Tripping – JJ2” is a nice conversion of the game Hocus Pocus made by Apogee. I haven’t played the original, so I can’t rate on that.

No one needs the original though, as Violet did exactly convert the game as accurate as possible. Some may like that, but I don’t. Of course it gets unbalanced if one uses running, stomping, etc., but without running it’s kinda boring. I had put less carrots instead, most of them I really did not need. There were also put sucker tubes to prevent high jumping, which often through me into spikes unfairly, which was annoying. The enemy placement of the original must have sucked, because so it does in this pack. Clumped together enemies on every platform, it’s annoying. There were a lot of places were I got unfairly hurt also, because for example a warp target was put directly above spikes in the last level. That’s not Violet’s fault as he didn’t make the gameplay, but I hate it. I just don’t like that Violet sticked to the original so much, leave a little room for creativity. That doesn’t mean the pack wasn’t creative though, some things were done profesionally. I had never thought off stopping Tuf Bosses from shooting with belts. There are a lot of tricks used to make it as accurate to the original as possible. That, however, often ruins the gameplay and looks just weird. It was not bad, but it could’ve been a lot better and I don’t think it does deserve a 10. On a final note, the music annoyed me to hell.

The pack is a nice and very accurate conversion, but freaking overrated.

If you’re a fan of this kind of gameplay then download, otherwise don’t.

Unofficial Official Reply N/A Review:

@luuk:
I actually had reasons for choosing which enemies were which. Mushrooms, Bear-Dogs and Penguins all walk around normally but run at you. That’s what a Doggy Dogg does. Dragons and Eskimos walk around and shoot at you. That’s what a Hatter does.
I’ll admit the flying enemies were less accurate, but JJ2 has no flying enemies that are very similar to those in Hocus. Red Demons and the Birds act the same, so I went with appearance for bats, and Sparks were green demons because they can move great distances.

@Trafton:
I know about the bug in Level 4 with the Doggy Doggs, and I meant to put something in the readme about it, but I guess I forgot. So..
Warning! In Level 4, get the Silver Key before using the combination lock switches after the Gold Lock. Otherwise you are likely to get unfairly hurt.
For those you care, the sucker tube bug mentioned is as follows. If you go into the white potion to test the first combination lock in level 4 from directly below it, exactly on center, you’ll get stuck. Because that’s how JJ2 works. Sorry.
Can’t believe I missed the bug where you get stuck in Level 7. File reuploaded.

I give this level pack a 9.5, for great effort, a good design, and for bringing back a classic. Good job. By the way, I can see why level nine was hard, but it wasn’t THAT hard. (No, I’m not trying to show off…)

Violet, how about recreating Sonic? (Since JJ2 is pretty much the same, but with a gun.)

Hocus Pocus rules.

sniff he finally did it- he said he would be makin sumthin big- and he did.

Ahem!*

Now review- Great levels- practically exactly like the actual hocus pocus game!

Put as the fist post said bad enemy placement- i know they dont have the same enemies but, for the ememies you could’ve tried “stop enemy” personally, ive never used it. But it might work.

Good join violet, and good luck for making episode 2! (for us that dont have the full version- like me :()[This review has been edited by KILLERRABBIT]

Hmm….I planned on rating this a 9.2, but I have been bribed. Well, not really. But this pack is very good. and here comes a review that will most likely end up being very long.
start review and spoy bashing

Well, when Violet told me he was converting the first episode of Hocus into jj2, I had my doubts. I told spoy about it in the form of calling him foo.
Which I do anyway.
Then, after a long time, I was allowed to play the first level. It was a VERY faithful conversion to the actual game Hocus Pocus…the main difference being the poorly drawn heroes….Normally, hocus is somewhat well drawn, and jazz……is jazz. ;p
Anyway, the level lived up to the game and more. I found it more fun to play than the actual game, truthfully. I enjoyed it more, probably because I get to play as Jazz, who, although isnt at all better drawn, has some good…moves.
Even though we arent supposed to use them, I find it really adds to the game. And, having beaten original Hocus ep. 1, I dont feel too bad. Anyway, it was an incredibly faithful conversion, probably as close as it can get.
Later, I was given the opportunity to play many more levels from the pack. I figured the first one would be the best…..but no! The rest of the levels are also exact conversions. I couldn’t believe that in only a year and 3 months Violet could create something so….good. (no, i’m not saying he makes bad levels ;p) So, I played various levels, which were surprisingly done in no order that I can tell.
Next, after playing most of the 8 levels, the Mad Monks of Mellenwah were finally finished. I couldn’t wait, as the monks are probably the best part in the entire game Hocus Pocus. I eagerly recieved the file from Violet, and went straight to the level in JCS to press run. I dont know why, as my levels list is not full at all. but oh well.
So, i began my long fig ht against the monks. Hard at first, but it was well worth it. THis is probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing a single player Jazz Jackrabbit2 level. And then there’s the music. For some reason, my sound card only worked with Hocus ONCE, and then Hocus wouldn’t detect it. But i DID hear the music from one of the levels……and the music here is a nearly perfect conversion, as is the rest of the pack. The tilesets are perfectly converted, as well. I was amazed that this wasnt one of Spotty’s high-quality type tilesets such as Land Of Blode v5. I let out a sigh of relief, and continued on with my life. Then, a while later, Violet told me he planned to release the Hocus pack. All the levels were done. I was happy. I asked if he’d like an episode file to go with that. So, we set to making one. He did the images, and I created the files. The menu selection text worked well, but it took quite a few tries to get the main image to work. after a while, it did work, though. Vio let then prepared to submit the pack to J2O. I waited. And then, a few hours later (he gave up at first because the pack took forever to upload), the pack was on. and now i reviewed it, as i finally finished almost all of the pack. (still cant beat level5 for some reason).
SO there is some history, and the reason why i hereby give Violet this well-deserved 10. I am very glad that this is such a good conversion of a great game. Download recommendation for sure.

This is a very good single player pack! Tileset was useful and also trigger scenery was good.(Disappearance of the blocks were very well.)And the switch parts were interesting also. But the enemy types were not so good according to the levels. And the 9.level was a super end boss level.(this must be the longest end boss level in jj2!) Anyway, this pack is one of the best single player levels after a long time

OMG COOL VIOLET
Since i have the first episode of the actual game, i can review these levels accurately.

Level 1: OMG COOL BOARD ON BOTTOM WOW
This level is very accurate and matches the game as best as possible, i like the choice of enemies u used in replace of the dragons, gargoyles and mushrooms. The text is copied well. A strait 10 for this level

Level 2:
In the beginning, i saw at first the ledge was to low and jazz could jump on it, but the suckers, ingenius! Perfect placement of goodies and enemies, and nice spikes and all. Even though it is in the game, there is to much live givers (carrots) which makes this easy and turns this into a 9.
Level 3: Love the music, love the idea where crates fall from the ceiling containing gems, because in hocus, when u busted a wall, occasionally a gem was behind it, this is aa nice way of avoiding the problem that 2 events cannot be on the same tile. I dun think sparks are a good idea though. 9.2
Level 4: Interesting sheild idea, but like i said, sparks not good idea. 9.5
Level 5: Interesting enemy idea, but to plain. IT s sometumes hard to press switches 9.6. Also, to much sheilds make it very easy
Level 6: Hmm….Fake secret….good tileplacement etc. a straight 10.
Level 7 Love music, but why u use bats for giant dragonflies….i would of used ravens, but o well, ur pack a 9.8
Level 8 Same comment as level 7 a 9.8 as well
Level 9: Interesting and hard idea for monks, i like it. But, this level isnt as good as a 10. 9.5
In conclusion, this pack deserves either a 9.5 or a 9.7. and a big fat download recc. thnx cya

BRILIANT REMAKE OF HOCUS POCUS!!!
GREAT WORK, VIOLET!!!
I like Hocus Pocus. I love this pack. It is great way for future. So originally…
So playable…
Lot of thing in Hocus Pocus are impossible to make in Jazz2. <<< HAHAHA!
Violet showed, it is not true. Now, little of things are impossible, but… we don’t know, if anything is impossible…
Mainly for originallity you get so high rating. Again, GREAT WORK, VIOLET!!!

Edit: Rating Adjusted to a 9.5 because I don’t think I have enough justified to make this a 10. It’s a very fun pack. The only thing I dislike is that when I see the Wizard, I immediately think it is Fooruman. Alas, it is not. ;P[This review has been edited by KJAZZ]

Well, that’s bad I haven’t seen that game “Hocus Pocus” or whatewer the name is.

Puzzles were really fun, and there was lots of enemies to shoot, that’s good. But seemed that you have exaggerated with the quantity of carrots. I think that in that type of level needs 5-8 carrots, but that is too much. But I noticed there aren’t any savepoints, is that the mean of a big quantity of carrots or, is there so much them because in that game (Hocus Pocus) Were so much those “Healing potions,” and weren’t any savepoints.

Ok, I don’t comment more. The number is 8,2.

I haven’t played the original Hocus Pocus so I cannot comment on how wel it resembles it…

I enjoyed the episode right up until I got to the switch combinations with the white bottle. I really hate that kind of puzzle. It basically forces you to systematically try EVERY combination until you get the right one. I used jjnext every time I encountered one of those from that point on.

I thought the big pixels on the tileset were a bit anoying but I guess that had to be done to keep the scale the same as the original.

On the whole a fun episode. Shame about the combination-puzzles…

[edit] With the combination puzzles out of the way I must say I quite enjoyed it.[This review has been edited by Ninja Dodo]

AAAAH, ‘twas like a long time ago since I last flew by to check j2o…ow well.. the online scene is so…dead.
I am in the proces of creating a new tileset so I will be coming to more dls soon. ANNNNYWAY, the review:

I have not much to add that hadn’t been said, but out of principle here is something:
the set is grand. Better than the old hocus pocus if you ask me (yes I still have that too). There is only one grade for this kind of work – > 10.
Good looks, good feel, good gameplay, excellent conversion.

I was going to give it a 10, but something really bugged me. It is put on the screen as an episode to choose, right? Well…. now if I wanna go through all 4 episodes without starting over I can’t because after you beat the last level here it goes to the first…. That’s sort of unfair, but the levels and tilesets are good, the game is just like the real Hocus Pocus =) So I can’t take off too much, so I thought giving this an 8.5 would be fair.

I dont like this pack in particular, i have to say prefer the lost world… her goes:

Eyecandy: Well, it is like the original hocus pocus, which is good i suppose, and the way the style of tiles in the lvl change after 1 or 2, which makes the lvls more interesting. the tilesets arent too fantastic but they are quite nice i have to say, no glaring bugs and nice eyecandy. 9.5/10

Gameplay: on hocus pocus, the wizard jumps crapply, as so the suckertubes make it a bit like that, this makes the effect better (+1). also it is fun apart from the really annoying combinations, though i think that is copied from hocus pocus (-1). The lvls are good, not exactly too fun to play in, but they are good… =D 9/10

Pickups: good there are loads of gems to collect, which can be fun, but no food or ammo, you could have made it a bit more fun in that way… D’=. But that is how the game is so i have nothing to say. also there are far too many carrots, you should get rid a few of them… ;P 9/10

Music: good, there are different musics for the different lvl styles, which is impressive i have to say, but the musics arent that different, just a bit, i dont mind the music it is average……….. 9/10

Overall: 9.5/10[This review has been edited by sabaspaz]

(Unsupported rating removal. No. If you look in the final level, it says I’m not about to make Shattered Worlds, and if you view the JCF thread linked to in the description, you’ll see me explaining why not. ~Violet)

This well and truely does deserve a 10!!

Great on every levels (especially the last level with the monks) in gameplay, the placement of coins is good and even includes other items besides gems, but Potions and Keys!

Well done

Download Recommendation: Definatly yes!!!

Och, this is very Coooool Pack!
I like them very much, because is not too hard and not too easy, and are very playful. Good Job!
(Unsupported rating (9.2) removal. Try to comment on more than the difficulty, which is what I assume this review was about. I think we also have a three line minimum. ~Violet)

I thought the levels were too easy for anyone, but still ALOT of fun. Everything was great and I liked the last level the most, that was very cool.

It’s the same as the original Hocus Pocus!!! Same graphics, same feeling (though in JJ2 you have special movements, which you shouldn’t use here) and same levels. The most noticeable bug was on the ladder blocks, which your feet actually get into, but that’s a clipping error. This pack is one of the best for JJ2 so stop waiting and download this!!!

This is a good pack,
however, the enemy choose is not good, the dog’s I would only use for the pinguins in level 5 and 6 for demon bears the tuff turtle should do fine, for the mushroom heads, can be exchanged by skeletons, for flying enemys, you can pick others than the bat too, green demons could be ghosts en grey demons (your bird things) can be birds or floating lizzards. Anyway I would rate this level an 8.5

additional note: you can stop enemys by wall’s, there is an special event in JCS to do that, stop enemy it is called I think

another note: why don’t you try to fix the size problem to make the levels larger?

last note: I will rate it again if the bugs are out
