Description

I’m sure all of you’ve heard some oldie somewhere comment on the ‘good old days’. If not in JJ2 (by some unthinkable miracle) then it was from your grandfather. Ah yes, the days when the servers were bountiful (and full), the players were many, the skill was low (there was always someone you could give a good beating), and of course, the levels and tilesets were total junk (compared to today). Funny, how they never seem to mention that last one. Well, this is here to remind them of that very last thing. 5 tilesets, each with a different theme (that should cover most of those memorable days). All these tilesets were drawn by hand (no special effects whatsoever), only using the official palette, and no textured background. However, I never did go as low as to copy other images into the set, and I made some extra layer eye candy (something you almost never saw in those days). The example levels make up a 50×50 battle pack for some more memories. (For a while I was tempted not to include example levels just to spite those ppl who rate them, RATE THE TILESET!). So, there you go, a little something for the newer ppl to laugh at, and to make the oldies realise what a difference there has been since those days. Heh, but it still was fun tho’ :D

Whew! Or to use the authors own vocabulary: “YAYAYA!!!!!”. Finally some quality.
“Golden Oldie’s Deluxe” is a nice little pack of five beautiful tilesets and five corresponding (example) levels.

“Rocky Greenland” (290 tiles) shows a rocky landscape with hills, clouds, bridges, flowers, stones, water, rain, signs and the like and it uses a kind of very impressing oil painting style (we’ve seen this before from the masterhimself and also from our finnish friend Blade).
“Prison Sewer” (190 tiles) shows the inside of a place, that noone really likes to visit for a longer time. Therefore, it mainly offers walls and stones. Not to forget the wall paintings (“I hate my lawyer”). It also reminds me of a…heh, no, i should better shaddap :-). LOL.
“Alien Homeland” (300 tiles) uses weird looking structures and crazy colours to create the atmosphere of an extraterrestrical place (namely Scotland, as far as i understand :-). Well, all i can say is that it’s fu**ing cool and every talented levelmaker will be able to do a lot with it.
As for “Modern City” (310 tiles), i can understand why Disguise hates cities. If they look like in this tileset, you simply don’t wanna live (or drive :-) there. Well, maybe thats some kind of subtle irony…). Nevertheless, the set includes some nice structures like streets, doors, windows, clouds, stones and steel. The overall look of this set is not too exciting, though.
Last but not least, “Green Matrix” (220 tiles), which shows a lot of green digits (C64 style) plus some other stuff thats hard to describe. It’s not my favourite tileset in this pack as well.
Besides, all tilesets are well-masked in my opinion (i didn’t look too close at it, though).
And indeed, all five sets look quite simple. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective (in a sense of good gameplay, having FUN). See? :-)
Apart from all that, the author included five (example) battle levels in his pack. And once again, Disguise sets and stabilizes the standards of modern level making (note: modern level making was always modern :-): the layout is open, the eyecandy is convenient and the weapon and warp placement also fits the needs. Personally, this is still my favourite type of level. I love to play them!
One thing i’m really really missing is the custom music (you know my theory: custom tilesets need custom music). Disguise, you’re one of the gurus when it comes to choosing good music for Jazz2 levels. Don’t bore us with default tunes!
Everything else is just great and it really proves the passion AND the soundness of Disguise’s creations. Besides, i wrote too much…so take my MUST DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATiON and go playing Jazz!

YAY! I’m the first one reviewing this tileset pack! And WHAT a tileset pack! ;-D I have a feeling that this is gonna be a long reivew…

Alien Homeland
This is a nice tileset, not the best of the pack but still nice. It’s got neat animated warps/teleporters/whatever and there’s also inside and outside tiles, the outside tiles are as Disguise said pink (LOL) and they got those white stuff on them that looks like snow. (Weird!) Disguise has also added arrows, vines, poles, funny looking suckertubes and strange pink..ehr…nets…(are you sure this is what an alien world looks like Disguise?) The inside tiles has got much more better looking tiles. There’s those round windows and nice platforms and not to forget mention that the windows come in two sizes. ;-P The background stuff is also good, some tiles can be used on the foreground layers as well. One good example is those green rounded houses. And to those who likes to make space lvls with loads of moving/still stars there’s always those kinda box shaped stars (There’s definetely something wrong with Disguise!) In short Alien Homeland is a very good tileset (although VERY weird) and you could probably make quite interesting lvls out of this tileset.

Green Matrix
AAAAARGH! My eyes has gone blind! This tileset is the WORST in the tileset pack undoubtly! The platforms really sux and the destruct blox are plain and boring. Blah! Only good stuff are those animated numbers but then it’s the numbers that causes ppls eyes to go blind. Well? Is there anything more to add? Oh yes! There is; this is not a good tileset.

Modern City
Wow! This tileset rocks! (Not more than the pyramids though ;) The tileset’s got many good looking tiles and they’re very eyefriendly unlike Green Matrix. Although it’s not as good as Town House 1/2 I can see that Disguise has tried to copy some of those tilesets ideas. There’s those skyscrapers (or rather groundscrapers cause they’re so low ;) and roofs with neat chimneys. The roads are the best part though, they look just like motorways and they can go up and down and vice versa (obviously) which could prove essential to SP lvls. To make the roads more interesting, Disguise has added some bridge stuff which makes way for collapsing bridges and other stuff. I really like them, they’re cool. :-) And no tileset is a proper tileset without destruct bloc of course, although they’re plain and simple just as those in Green Matrix, they don’t hurt the eyes which is one good thing. Oh! I almost forgot the fluffy white clouds! You can use them in the sprite layer too and they make really good platforms. Man this tileset is “cute”! ;-D Modern City is one of the best tilesets in the pack and maybe…just maybe I’ll make a lvl out of this, but for now, I’m gonna trust other ppl to do it.

Prison Sewer
Now…now…this tileset is fabulous! It’s even better than Medivo! ;) The tileset sure looks like a prison sewer with slimy stuff, water stuff, chains and weird looking cages (or is it cages?). There’s also the usual vine, poles and this time there’s spiky stuff on the ground and hooks too. Disguise has also added neatly drawn posters with words like “I hate my lawyer!” and “FREEDOM!” Prison Sewer is just…just…just very good. :)

Rocky Greenland
Here it is ladies and gentlemen! The star of the tileset pack: Rocky Greenland!! clap clap clap This tileset reminds me of one of Blade’s tilesets and it’s absolutely fabulous! The eyecandy is great with flowers, rain, distant green mountains, clouds and rocks. The tileset is the biggest in the pack and no, it’s not half filled with junk, every single tile is has got a use. You can make rocky and sterile caves, beautiful grassy landscapes or why not both? There’s also bridges made out of an interesting coloured wood and similar looking fences and arrows too. Oh, and not to forget the vines which looks rather like extremely strong grass, the poles and the water stuff. And there’s more! Disguise has drawn funny stone faces which you can use as neat decorations. Aah, let’s just hope that somebody…somewhere…makes an excellent lvl out of this excellent tileset (HEY! Don’t look at me!) or else it would be a great shame cause Rocky Greenland definitely deserves it.

Well, what did I tell ya? It was a long review! Heheh. :-) Now, you know what? I’m gonna give this tileset pack an incredible…9.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, White Rabbit, a nobody, hereby commands you to download this pack NOW!

Rated terribly high by the others, not by me. It’s good, but nothing special. I’ve seen way better. This certainly goes back to Disguise’s earlier drawing style which was not-so-good-and-original in my opinion.

I only liked two of them pretty much, the green one, and I guess the Alien one wasn’t to bad either.

It’s just okay :P But I still don’t get why Disguise didn’t just took all of his free time making one very good set instead of 5 just okay ones.

And btw, the name doesn’t make any sence. —New

Moo! I’m the lowest rater so far, phoo! Anyway. The tilesets are great, especially if they are really drawn by hand (and I don’t think you are lying, Disguise). They have all a bit 3D look (I mean, well… Guess ;). Oh well, nothing more to write. Only one thing, they could be a bit bigger. mOO. I’m weird, goodbye and grab the 7.5.

Prison sewer: 4 out of 5 stars. I really like the color scheme. It looks like the set that is the one that Disguise spent most of his time on.

Modern city: 4 out of 5 stars. Good balanced colors, tight drawings.

Rocky Greenland: 3 out of 5 stars. The author tried it’s best, but imho the design is too messy. Bad shading on the rocks and more things like that.

Green Matrix: 2 out of 5 stars.
It doesn’t hurt my eyes, but it’s boring.

Alien homeland: too much colors. They don’t fit together. Shading is bad. 2,5 out of 5 stars.

When I first looked at the tilesets, I wasn’t too impressed. But then when I looked at the examples, I could see the many things you can do with some of the tilesets. One thing I have to say is that the tilesets aren’t very big. They need some more features to them. On the other hand, they are above the average tilesets. Download? DUH!!!

Hmmm, I really like Alien Homeland. It’s one of Disguise’s best tilesets ;-)

RockyG is not bad either, but the others aren’t that good. There just aren’t enough tiles in each one, maybe you should try to merge these 5 tilests into a multi-theme tileset, then I would give it at least a 7,5.

For now, I’ll give it a 6.[This review has been edited by CraccoBoy]

Ok, my basic review

Alien Homeland:
This is an ok tileset, not much wrong, if i were to describe it, id use one word. Strawberries. Yes, the pink platform here looks like strawberries, nothing more to say.

Green Matrix:
White rabbit, this isnt so bad, true it hurted my eyes at first, but i got into the green colour later on. It looks very digital, no comment.

Modern City:
Yes this does look so much like a modern city, those arrow signs, the green sucker tubes coming out of the ground, the FLOATING ROADS LOL! XD
Well, this isnt a bad tileset, for a modern city, its very textured btw

Prison sewer: Probably my least favourite, it doesnt look anything liek a sewer. It has a sorta dull backround, and to much bars. I cant really say much else on this except you can easily overuse the eyecandy here and make it look very ugly and confusing, but other than that, its an ok tileset.

And finally rocky greenland Despite the cartoonish look, this was most likely the best in the pack. I loved the ground and the bridges, the backround was ok, nothing really special. The rain isnt so good, to cartoonish, well, my favourite in other words. Im unsure whut to rate it, but if i would, it would be an 8.5 or a 9
9.2 tops, but surely a solid download reccomendation
