Most people buy it... but since it's kinda expensive only the diehard professionals buy it....

The latest version of Photoshop is Photoshop CS and is around $590 US. You can get the older Photoshop 7.0 for $130 US.

There are of course cheap alternatives. Adobe makes another version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements which sells for $90 US. It's basically a stripped down version of Photoshop.

And of course there is Jasc Paintshop Pro 8($85 US) which suits a lot of people just fine.

I recommend you try the free tryout versions of Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS. Please click the link below and scroll down to near the bottom where you can download a tryout version:

http://www.adobe.com/products/tryado....jsp#product40

Hope this helps you.

Edit: If you live in the United States or Canada it shouldn't be too hard to find. They sell it in Walmart, Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, Staples, Target... you name it

You can also get the GIMP, which is really good considering that it's free.

Mmm. Gimp. My tool of choice. :-)

However, you'd probably want to go directly to the page with Win32 Gimp. Or directly to the most convenient download page for it.

Takes a bit to learn, but it's really quite powerful.

People that want to be artists jump to Photoshop like people who want to be 3D animators jump to 3DSM. The most expensive program isn't necessarily the best, easiest, or fastest for what you want to do. I suggest trying some free programs before you go spending money on anything.

Exactly why I recommended he/she try the free tryout version of Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements...

Obviously there are many reasons for choosing Photoshop over... free... programs.... but it sounds like he just needs something that is the next notch up from MS Paint...

So, we have:

Photoshop CS
Photoshop 7
Photoshop Elements
Paintshop Pro
GIMP

any other good free programs? any other good programs $33 dollars or less?

It's really good for picture editing, such as adding unique touches to your images or playing around with textures. I often use it in relation to drawing tilesets or play with the atmosphere within.

It's also good for resizing.

I think Paint Shop Pro would suit you. It has lots of useful filters that you can adjust, and is cheaper than Photoshop.

Yes, and Paint Shop Pro has an automated scripting system, which in some cases is very handy. It can also open .psd (Photoshop format) files (Wonder how that'd work).

Do you ever actually buy anything? :/

I download very few things from the net...

I usually go to the store and shell out the cash. It feels good to be legal.

There's a system called "money" that we trade for things we want.

Oh, you already know about that? My bad. Just download the GIMP instead, that's what I use and it's free.

If you were going to (probably) make up a statistic, you might as well make it a statistic that doesn't prove the opposite point.

People who buy photoshop from Adobe are people who want to see Adobe make more photoshops in the future.

OM Gosh, I can't believ that program costs more than Microsoft Office. I didn't think that any program costs more than MS Office!

A program like this or any of the others mentioned, I would say buy it. I don't believe in downloading something like this.

Both Maya and 3DS Max would put you in debt a couple thousand, too. You can get free education versions of these from their site, I think.

Bottom line. Buy it if you understand all the features and need it for commercial purposes.
If you can't handle the power, don't download it as warez.

If your caught downloading, well then your probably doomed. And the legal penalty will probably be very severe. What, the hell, I think It's obvious that these programs are not meant for home usage, if they cos this much. I've never even heard of these programs!

Incorrect. I have spoken with people whom have been caught. What will happen is: you will recive a letter from you're ISP requesting you to remove the file(s) immidiatley, they may or may not request a response. Subsiquent events of being caught may result in the same thing or possible termination of your internet services. Sharing music or movies over lousey P2P networks and/or very popular ones like ***EXPLODING STAR THINGY*** may get you into a lawsuit but the chances of that are VERY low.

Due to the rules on this board I am unable to state my opinion on what I think a kid with a low buget who wishes to use the program for educational purposes only should do I will refrain from further comment.
