The Temitango VII's shuttle glided smoothly into the dock, setting down with a quiet hum. Roughly five seconds later Elexei pulled his speeder up.
"Wait for a moment," he told the twins.
"Sure," Kira said to his retreating back. Tira shook her head and rolled her eyes.
"I don't think he heard you."
"I don't think he cares."
"Really? What gave you that impression?" Tira's tone was dry. Kira laughed.
"I'm not sure. It might have been the long silence that followed my comment that tipped me off."
"Yeah, that might do it," Tira agreed. There was a short silence.
"A moment is up, and he's working on a few minutes, isn't he?"
"He's getting there, yes."
"Who's getting where?" Elexei demanded, coming towards thim, a sky-blue rabbit trailing resignedly behind him.
"You're getting late, and we're getting impatient," Kira said. "You must be Defalcon, no?"
"Yeah," Defalcon said. "I don't think I know you, though."
"I'm Kira Diamond," Kira said. "This is my sister Tira."
"How could I tell," Drefalcon said wryly. "I appreciate the lift, 'Lex."
"No problem," Elexei said. "But I'm curious ... why the Castle?"
"I'm not sure," Defalcon said thoughtfully. Noticing Elexei's odd expression, he grinned. "Honestly, 'Lex. I got a call from Coppertop - I told you about Copper, right?"
"Sort of."
"Kay. It seems she has a small problem, but the details are really vague."
"So she called you?"
"Yah. Not sure why, though."
"You'll find out," Tira said confidently. "I'm pretty sure she'll tell you."
"That's what I'm counting on," Defalcon agreed.
"Well, let's go," Elexei said. Defalcon nodded and leapt up onto the side of the speeder, balancing lightly for a moment before dropping carelessly into the seat. Elexei rolled his eyes.
"Can't you just use the door like normal people?" he complained. Defalcon grinned.
"C'mon, Lex, what's taking you so long? Bet you can't do it."
Elexei shrugged. He vaulted over the side, momentarily forgetting about the aforementioned door.
"You were saying something funny, I believe," Kira said dryly. Elexei grinned in embarrassment.
"Who, me?"
'Yeah, you," Defalcon said. "Is it just me, or is this thing not moving?"
"It's just you," Elexei muttered under his breath. "I mean, 'this thing' is obviously going. You just haven't figured it out yet."
"I heard that," Defalcon said, just as quietly.
"I didn't," Kira said innocently. "Care to repeat yourself, 'Lex?"
"No."
"Why not?"
In lieu (sp?) of an answer, Elexei fired the engines, and the speeder tore out of the spaceport. Defalcon shook his head.
"It's still not moving, Elexei."
"If I go any faster, I'll be breaking the, uh, speed limit," Elexei explained, although the speed limit sign (if there had ever been one) had been creamed years ago by some tourist, and as such no longer existed in the average Carrotan mind. Defalcon shook his head again.
"Excuses, excuses. Speed limits were used twenty years ago by dirtcrawlers, 'Lex. Come on. We'll be all day at this rate."
"Fine." Elexei pushed the throttle to full, and they shot off towards the Carrotus Castle.
"This is more like it," Defalcon said.
About eight minutes and two barely-missed trees later, the Castle appeared on the horizon. Elexei winced as they skimmed over the top of a tree, his quick reflexes allowing him to pull the speeder up in time to miss it. Defalcon shook his head sadly.
"Want me to drive?"
"You? NO," Elexei said emphatically. "You, my friend, wouldn't miss. You'd just plow through them."
"Sadly, true," Defalcon admitted. "Still, at least I'd hit it and get it over with. You can't seem to make up your mind!" He ducked as something whizzed by overhead. Elexei didn't ask what it was.
The Castle loomed ahead, uncomfortably solid. Tira gasped and braced herself as Elexei decelerated suddenly, in effect, slamming the brakes on. The speeder spun around, almost throwing Defalcon over the side. The startled rabbit barely kept his balance.
Kira was laughing madly as Elexei brought the speeder under control. When everything had stopped moving, Defalcon ventured to stand up.
"That's the last time I get a ride with you," he threatened Elexei, who looked at him innocently.
"You insisted we go faster," he protested. "It's not my fault!"
"Well, last time you drive then," he said. "What was I thinking?"
"Beats me," Kira said. "So. We're here. Now what?"
"We find Jack Flash."
"I know Jack," Elexei offered. Defalcon ignored him until it was apparent that Kira and Tira had no idea where Jack was. Finally he turned to Elexei.
"You know Jack Flash?"
"I only been saying that for the last two minutes, Defal."
"All right," Defalcon said with an air of reluctance.
Elexei grinned. "I take it you want to know where he is."
"That would be incredibly helpful. I don't suppose you could enlighten me."
"I'm considering it."
Defalcon shook his head sadly. Elexei brightened.
"Hey, Jack!"
A white rabbit was coming towards them, blaster in hand. At Elexei's greeting, he holstered the blaster, and broke into a quick lope.
"Elexei," he greeted. "Knew it was you. No one else drives like that."
"Excepting Grinder, of course," Tira said. Jack nodded ruefully.
"Except Grinder. So, you're Defalcon?"
"Yeah. You're Jack Flash, huh?"
"Yes. I take it Copper didn't tell you what was going on." He turned abruptly to Elexei. "Which reminds me, 'Lex, I'm recruiting you."
"For what?" the pale gold rabbit asked warily.
"To help find Jazz Jackrabbit."
"Oooh, suddenly it all makes sense," Defalcon said. Elexei could almost see the lightbulb turning on between the blue rabbit's ears.
"Clue us in, please," one of the twins said. Jack eyed them.
"Depends. Are you volunteering?"
"Depends," the other twin said dryly. "Are you recruiting?"
"Kay. Yesterday evening Jazz went missing ..."

Oo, long one. Sore fingers, too.

Acid and Electrik wandered in around midday. Jack and Firefox were - somewhere, anyway. Acid and his brother knew Jack and his crew anyway, so Kaz made slightly muddled introductions for the rest and Nobody corrected him.
"How many people did Copper call anyway?" Acid demanded in disbelief.
"As far as I know, she actually contacted about eight of us," Defalcon said. "The rest of these guys appeared on their own."
"Did not," one of the feline twins protested. Acid couldn't tell which. "You dragged us along, and Jack recruited us!"
"I dragged you along," Defalcon repeated in disbelief. "I dragged you along? Excuse me?"
"Oh, shut up," a blue-winged rabbit said irritably as he landed. Acid thought his name was Sasha. "Eva just got the ransom note."
"Really?"
"No. It's a sick joke played on us by Eva Earlong. Yes, really. Why does everyone ask that?"
"Whazzit say?" Kaz demanded, hopping up and down. Sasha twitched his wings.
"How should I know? She never told me."
"All right, don't get your feathers in a knot," Tiger said calmly. "Why don't we just go find out?"
"A brilliant solution, Reibeck," Elexei agreed. "However did you come up with that?"
"Do I detect sarcasm in that?"
"Heaven forbid, O master of deduction. Your intelligence leaves me in awe."
"Khiern will leave you in pain if you keep that up."
"Khiern?"
"My sword."
"Ohhh ..."
Jack came out of the castle at that moment. "Hey, Acid, Electrik. Guys, Queen Earlong wants to see us."
"Just you guys?" Elexei said incredulously.
"No, all of you. C'mon."
They trooped into the Castle and were confronted immediately by the Queen of Carrotus.
"All right, you motley bunch, apparently Copper thinks you're some of the best. Seems this guy wants the Riveth."
"Aaand ... what's the Riveth," Defalcon said slowly.
"It's a Hellantran firegem," Eva explained while her mother glowered at Defalcon. "It's also one of our most precious treasures. I don't know all the properties it's supposed to have ..." here she faltered and glanced, not at the Queen but at Radium. When he didn't volunteer any information, she shrugged. "That's all I know."
"The question is, are you gonna give it to 'em," Firefox said. No one had noticed him come in.
"We may have to," the princess said, just as Radium came out with a definite "no!"
"Well, which is it?" Jack asked, looking amused. Radium winced.
"I advise against it, yeah."
"You? Advise?" The Queen looked torn between rage, indignation, and disbelief at the outlandish mage's statement. "I think my daughter knows what she is doing."
Rdium kept his silence, but his expression said it all.
Jack shrugged impatiently. "So what do we do now, Your Majesty?"
"I'll consult with some people, the names of whom you don't need to know, and we'll come to a decision. In the meantime, take this ragtag group and keep looking for my son-in-law!"
"Right," Jack said, but before he could say any more the Queen swept off, Eva in tow.
"The problem with looking for Jazz is where to start," Firefox said sadly. Headcheese nodded in her vague way. Indigo scuffed at a floorstone with a foot.
"When did you guys arrive?" Kira demanded, or maybe it was Tira. Wizad blinked.
"Always here."
"Anybody got any bright ideas on where to begin?" Jack said.
"To start, maybe Radium here should inform us of what the Riveth is, precisely." Wizard looked very definite on this. Radium shrugged.
"Like Eva said, it's a Hellantran firegem, and a Carrotan crown jewel."
"There's more to it than that. I can tell," Acid said. "Me'n Electrik have been around you before, Rad. There's more to it that you're not telling."
"Yeah, you're right," Radium admitted freely. "It'd be precious on its own, just because firegems are so rare, but it's got a bit more toit. One of those Carrotan kings way back when must have been (or known) a Chaos or Order Mage, 'cause that thing is chock full of energy. If you knew how to use it, you could do almost anything."
"Not good," Jack said. "Why didn't you tell the Queen?"
"There are some things even royalty aren't meant to know."
"So you told us," Nobody chortled. "Nice."
"Yah, I told you. Why not? You can't use it."
"But an Order or Chaos Mage could."
Radium nodded. "Sure. Quite easily, too."
"How many Order Mages can there be?" Tira (Kira?) wondered.
"That's the question, isn't it," Sasha said quietly Radium only nodded.
"Well, if Radium's such a powerful mage (which I know he is), why can't he find Jazz?" Electrik demanded suddenly.
"If I could, I wouldn't be here," Radium said irritably. "Either he's hidden by this Order Mage, or my magic isn't working right, which wouldn't surprise me. It IS chaos, after all."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"One last question," Acid said. "NOW what?"

Yay, another great chappie. Monarchy can be so fun.
