Dx, What?

Ok, listen I'm fixing stuff, taking some people's advice. For once, Jwklr's stupid Pokemon rule is being dropped because I asked him to drop it, were going to make the board even less clutter, and some things are going to change.

Maybe encoding MP3's with another encoder is illegal, but listening to them is not. Nor is viewing a GIF less legal than viewing a PNG, just because GIF uses a patented compression technique.
I think Franhofer holds some patents to do with MP3 (specifically, MPEG-1 layer 2/3 audio), and want money out of anyone who makes a MP3 encoder. LAME is very careful in a) distributing in source only and b) being intended as an experimental proof-of-concept-sorta-thing. Unfortuantly, a certain organisation in the UK that you really do not want to end up on the wrong side of (and no, I don't mean the BPI) has got the wrong end of the stick regarding this (see my post in the European constitution thread for more details).

A different company holds certain patents to do with GIFs, and they tried to get royalties for every GIF in existence. I think they failed (else you'd be paying them whenever you created or distributed a GIF). Part of the reason for PNG was a patent-free alternative to GIF that happened to be better.

Tubz: I'll have a look at the forum in a bit and then give you lot the next instalment from Radio BoggyB (I assume you're enjoying it, as I haven't seen any high-velocity rotten fruit yet)

Out of all of the 850 or something songs I have, everyone of them is a mp3. I have never seen or heard of an .ogg song....as for legalness, I hear everyone saying that downloading mp3's is illegal no one talks about .ogg's or .wav's...But never the less, all illegal...

.ogg files are said to be smaller in size.

And 850 songs? Heh, I used to have around twice that.

Those are video formats I believe. Nobody talks about .oggs because the .ogg format isn't as famous as .mp3 yet... I bet you never heard anyone say "hey I download illegal wavs" either, but .wavs can still be illegal.

Actually, I think MP1/2/4 are sound as well, and the video extension is MPG/MPEG/VOB/DAT.

MP3 = MPEG3 = MPEG Layer 3 = very good sound

The forums look much better now. To be honest, it doesn't beat the JCF, but one way of preventing us from being split up is if the two forums would link to each other.

Link to each other? What for...I don't know about Jwklr, but I don't care about competition...we are way too late to start that...and I think of JCF as a reincarnation of JMMB anyway....so continuing on JMMB's legacy....lol

The community is already split up between JJ2, JCF, J2O and #JJ2. What's another hub going to hurt? It just categorizes us a little more and reduces the chance of hostile encounters, plus creating a wider range of welcoming environments for a wider range of interested individuals.

Dx's sig is too big

@the persons that corrected the name of the forums on page 1: Community is spelled with two "n"s. Maybe correct correctly when you do correct?;P

Maybe that Pokémon rule should be merged with the staying-on-topic rule? Afterall Pokémon isn't in any way on topic at a jazz2 forum. Sort of this, perhaps: "Try to stay on topic. Threads that are totally outside what the community is based on, will be deleted, certain punishment might be given if you, for example, make more than 3 topics about Pokémon."

...nvm that, my idea didn't work. Just keep that controversial rule though, because eventhough it is offensive to Bjarni, the lion share of the forum members enjoy the absence of worthless crap, like Pokémon threads. And it is quite a fun rule.

I can't agree with that. On this forum topics are made about alot of subjects, so I see no reason why it should be forbidden to make topics about Pokémon. I have to agree that there shouldn't be made too many topics about it, but I have nothing against the fact that you post topics about it. And if you make a topic about it, be sure it's not a very short post of one line. In my opinion, a topic uses to have at least more than one line, or even two. (Except if it's a poll, in the Comedy Cafe, or game threads)
Now back to topic. I already looked at the forum, but not the newest version. I'll check it soon, and maybe I'll register.
