We need a 24/7 server

me and crazy were thinking about this.

Ok the subject is about haveing a server running 24/7. I'm sick of seeing pinging all the time. and tsf servers. and 1.20 servers.

Sometimes I just wanna kick back and play jazz with some people. Well I never can as theres allways pinging servers. Sometimes I think the retriveing server lists should say. retriveing pinging lists loser.

My point is can anyone host a server 24/7 its well needed I know a lot of people want one. please I beg you

Ty

(I am the official Did You Know whiner)

The Did You Know says the BS is runing. What a lie. OR IS IT?!

(just doing my job, making your life even worse)

If you want a server host one, if you can't ask someone, if you don't find anyone then you don't have anyone to play with anyway. I think the 24/7 things makes JJ2 even less active, cuz ppl only join them, see there is nobody, and close the game for the day. If someone need to host it means that you will al least have someone to play with or wutever.

Well, I loved the time when the battle server was back up. No serious games were played in it, but it was used as a meeting place to plan and warm up clanwars.

A 24/7 server...Great idea. I think we should host one for each type of game. I"m always wanting to play treasure hunt and there's never a server for it!

Is there a JJ2 dedicated server program for hosting? Dedicated servers are really fun to play in.

Digiex has dedicated Windows and Linux boxes both in the US and UK.

All we need is a working Dedicated Server Applicaton, and your see "Digiex.net" flooding the list server with games

We only need 1 or 2. Remember there are hardly any players anyway. But thanks for the nice gesture.

I just think that as there isn't too much players , there be more servers online than players. Sorry If that seems stupid to anyone.

On the moment, Falcury and I are trying to set up a 24/7 server for Karrot Shire (check this thread or the website ).

That's also one of the reasons why KS hasn't been hosted in a while. Don't worry! It will be hosted soon! And in a month we (hopefully) have a 24/7 KS server! =)

Is there a linux dedicated server? I could maybe run a 24/7 (minus weird kernel crashes, people tripping over power cords, etc) server if there is, but otherwise...

There is no released dedicated server, and I'm not sure that the private one (which isn't done to my knowledge) works with linux. The best way to run one is probably to just run a normal server and leave it on. (Sorry I can't help)

There should be windows and linux versions of the dedicated server, I'm just not sure how much control over the memory/game a user should be given. Giving excessive amount of control makes it harder to make a decent GUI and just makes things more complex, but has its benefits while an easy-to-use GUI doesn't offer as much possibilities, but makes things much simpler to run.

The second thing to consider is where to draw the line between the hardcode and the script. Technically I could do the whole engine in C++ and offer a little scripting interface, but on the other hand I could do the entire engine in the scripting language and do only the core stuff in C++... sort of like the linux kernel.
Each method has its benefits and drawbacks.

The problem is crashing apps can take down windows, where as on linux, that almost never happens unless you crash something like X11 that touches hardware directly.

Keep it clean and simple. Allow for more complex controls, but for the most part try to keep those hidden.

Hardcode the complete game so that it can run like a completely normal JJ2 server without any scripts. Use scripting to extend/modify beyond that. Or at least make the basic scripts built-in.

I've had JJ2 crash on Windows while hosting it many, many times. Windows 98 handled it decently, and Windows 2000 and up doesn't have any trouble with it.

Thumbs up 24h/d server?, OK

In 2-4 weeks i can give u a 24h/d server, its a old one from the company where i work, i only need it to play my personal macros and programms (for my private network) on it, but, they not need the complete cpu, i would install windows 2000 server edition on it and I can give 2 or 3 persons complete acces with remote control service (if JJ and a macro for JJ is completed crashed) with windows internal service or/and teamviewer.

EDIT: Sry, but its going faster than i thing, in the compeny a other (better) server was unused, he came from a client, so today i test the server for the first 24h, than i install macros if jj is crashed or left from the list server

Ok, in the last 24h i had testet my Server, he not have any Problems, but JJ need Programms and ideas.

This programms i would start with JJ:
- Carrotade
- Cataclysm (or a similar anti cheat programm)

And i search Programms (for this Problems):
- If the list server is down?
- If JJ have an AV (all must work automatic, restart JJ,...)?
- And i search a programm to turn down the cpu usage (from 100 to 20-50)

Thx for help,
the Server come back, when i find a place for it and JJ work.

What's strange is that this outdated Cataclysm still appears on the J2O patches page.
