Everytime I enter this site there's a one in two chance of it running slow. Especially for a site that doesn't get much traffic, this is pretty bad.

Also, at least once a week, the site is usually down. Basically, the hosting is unreliable.

It either showed a gateway error or a cPanel login page. Here's a summary of all the errors J2O kindly produced for me:





I guess that there's either some misconfiguration on the host's load balancer and/or gateway server, or the specific rack J2O is hosted on became unreliable.

And Treylina: a less blunt tone in your posts would be appreciated. Remember that the site is funded out of Bobby's pockets and has no advertisements or premium services, and as such our options for moving to a "better" host are limited.

Also remember that the site is run by volunteers, and the one running the technical side of things (me!) has a full time job and regrettably can't be on top of site issues all the time.

Basically, yes, the site has had some problems recently, but simply stating "J2O hosting sucks" and "this is pretty bad!" is less likely to motivate me to find out what's wrong than just a friendly note that you've been having issues with the site lately. It's not like we make stuff run slowly to spite you.

I don't mean it personally, it just gets frustrating after a while finding the site being down or slow 50% of the time I try to open. I highly doubt a site would run slow to spite people.

I'm one of those "evil" people who isn't afraid to admit something is bad, and some take it personally. Yet I explain why. I don't see it as personal because it's not directed towards the people themselves. Which I know not everyone sees it that way. Having get to used to dad shouting at me for simple questions at times maybe effects the way I explain things too.

When people acknowledge big enough problems, I kind of expect them to know it's bad. Does that make them a bad person? No. That includes things I create, too.

Are all fairly cheap hosts unreliable like this? For a site that doesn't get much traffic and fairly small upload sizes, it doesn't need something big. While slow speed is one thing, the downtime is the main issue.

Who knows, maybe this will stop happening after a while. But if it keeps going, this thread may be bumped.

Maybe I'll even donate a bit to help with getting a more reliable server.

I'm not accusing you of ad hominems. I'm just kind of annoyed at your bluntness. Just let me know the site is down by posting a message on these forums. Don't jump to conclusions about our host (it could've been your connection for example; that's happened before). Don't add unnecessary qualifiers like "J2O hosting sucks" and "it's pretty bad". We know it sucks when the site is down. Obviously.

Just be nicer! It makes things more fun for everyone. And the site will get fixed either way. Just as a FYI, what happens is:

1. The site is down
2. Someone lets me know, or I find out by myself
3. I check our web host's control panel to see if there's a server outage
4. If so, usually the only solution is to wait. These things usually resolve themselves in 1 or 2 days (as happened now) so I may not always post a note about it on the site (that's impossible if the site is down anyway, for obvious reasons)
5. If not, I fix the site bug that's causing it or file a support ticket
6. ???
7. Site works again
