TreyLina's small tileset contest! Win money!

Since I saw a fair amount of interest from others in entering this, I decided it's time to begin!

First place prize is £25. Whether there will be a second place prize, depends on the quality of the entries. Second place prize is £12.50.

If all the entries suck, no one wins.

The deadline is now the 10th of July 2015

Anyway, here's the rules:

1. Max size is 150 tiles. That's 480 pixels tall.
2. No conversions. You can rip some tiles (like destructable scenery), but it can't define the tileset.
3. It should be 1.23 compatible. If you only have TSF JCS, use zapS's tileset converter.
4. An example level must be provided. It doesn't have to be a gamemode, but it needs to show what the tileset does as intended. Whether the level requires plus or not, it doesn't matter.
5. The entry must be uploaded on J2O.
6. Remakes are allowed as long as the art is genuinely new and not just slightly modified.

Here are some helpful tips to make you win and make tileset creating less of a pain:

1. Provide commonly used things in tilesets. Such as slopes, backgrounds, vines and tubes.
2. Good tile arrangement provides user friendliness. Try to make sure the tiles you're meant to use are placed beside one another.
3. Your textured background does not need to be 8x8. You can make it smaller to fit other tile types. Infact, a textured background is not required, as you can make a 2D background instead if you want.
4. Pallette compatibility with pinball events, water, snow etc is a plus, given if it fits with the theme of the level (if it's pallette incompatible and doesn't fit with the theme of the level, it won't affect the rating).
5. Destructable blocks, text signs, arrow signs, poles, belt floors (if the theme is mechanical), hurt scenery (ceiling and wall ones an extra plus!), foregrounds and hooks are also a nice plus.
6. Make sure the mask is smooth - no bumps!
7. Original themes are also a plus. But if you can improve on an existing theme, it doesn't matter.
8. Versatility is also great. Basically, how much you can do to make a level look unique with the same tileset.
9. Of course art quality counts! I admit I prefer the 8-bit method, providing you know how to colour well.

Well... I haven't even finished a single tileset, I started doing one, but it's not that great. So I don't think I'll participate

I'd like to mention JJ2+ gives players the option to add their own textured background, so you don't have to make one if you're insistent on saving more tile space.

In. Been wanting to make a tileset for a while but haven't had the time/motivation needed in order to make a full sized tileset.

About time we get some new tilesets!

Do you require that the participants officially announce their entering or is it just a matter of uploading something before the deadline?
Because I may or may not enter, depending on some things.

Anyway, regarding textured background, it is of course possible to do it with only 1 tile. (like in my 1 row set for example)

They don't have to announce it in JCF. It helps give the thread some publicity but it's optional. All what's required is that they upload it to j2o and say it's an entry for this contest.

Besides, I check the uploads section very often.

Actually I don't have credit card. You can actually have my money if I win this one (I doubt if I can even finish one) :P

Nah, I'll use this money for Fifa 15. Btw, do I need credit card for money transfer?

Then if you win why don't you ask Trey to buy Steam keys (TF2/Dota 2/CS:GO) and trade them to you? It's easier and the keys are a good currency on any game (You can buy games, cards or stuff from any game). Fifa 15? Why don't download a cracked version and waste money buying it? ;_;

The correct answer is XVI32.

Anyway, on a serious note, use whichever program you're comfortable with. If I enter, I'll use GIMP, maybe with a little help from TilesetPal if I need the pinball/pole objects to work.

Also, about backgrounds, a lot can be done with some creative thinking.

Any ideas of a tileset that hasn't been done? I mean it wouldn't be a good idea to start making a new tileset that has already been made. Or is there a specific theme someone needs?

How many tilesets? Only 1 tileset can be uploaded for this contest, or we can make 2-3 tilesets?

I'm not Trey, but I guess you can make more than one tileset, but you can't really do more tilesets and make all of them looking good. Try focusing on a single one.

We have a winner already: Skulg. Give up, others.

Edit: Didn't mean to be offensive in any way.

LOL STOP THAT *shoves Primpy into a wardrobe* I literally haven't made a tileset in 11 years! Chances are I might accidentally blow up JCS and somehow end up deleting the entire Internet. I also have the attention span of a goldfish.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to giving it a try! I'm super excited and looking forward to seeing everyone's awesome entries!

Here's an idea: Try making a tileset based on Team Fortress 2's map "2fort" ("Teufort"). It's a great map I would love to play in JJ2, and would do a great CTF map aswell. I found this 2D version on the internet.

If you want to know more about this map, download TF2 on Steam (it's a F2P game) or read more about it on the wiki.

Edit: The picture looks so tiny! Click here for a slightly bigger dimension.

You're underestimating yourself, I think. I mean, you draw really nice, it mustn't be that hard to do some 32x32 tiles. Just find some inspiration. Why not try to make something like an Atlantis tileset or something like that?

The risk every level designer has to take on a daily basis.

I might take part in this.

I'd prefer if you guys worked on just one entry. That way you can polish it up some more.

Also, I use paypal to give money, from my debit card. I don't use credit cards, they're evil.

It's from this game, I think.

I just found a great way to construct a tileset using MSpaint (TAKE THAT YOU GIMP NITWITS (no offence ofc, was just fooling around lol.)).
Well, i won't be 100% in this contest, if I like the final result of my tileset (which might not happen, since i have lame drawing skills), I might release an entry.
Anywho, I got an inspiration.

Isn't 480p tileset too small ?
Btw, does it have to completely drawn by oneself or remaking tiles from other games are allowed?

I never thought about it, but I suppose people can be judges if they aren't making an entry, and know how to critique tilesets.

This is a tileset contest, not a levelmaking contest. Though you could be a judge during a later contest of mine which will be coming during summer (it'll be a level contest but the gamemode/concept is yet to be announced).
