As a level designer I pretty much understand what you need in a tileset.

I misinterpret, thinking you meant you were going to review the example levels.

I never thought I had to mention it, though tilesets should really be an environment, not a clipart-esque fest (aka a bunch of images, especially large ones).
Sorry if I'm rude... Also, no need to limit yourself on colours that much. EDIT: Read my next post.

Oh. I didn't realise that with the lack of context.

Sami CAN make a tileset. It's just that all of his sets are 32-bit, and when he converts them, they, in his opinion, look awful. I mean, non of us saw his tilesets. Sami, you should show your work to someone and let THEM judge. |

Just no, the tilesets doesn't even meet the size demand of this contest. They are too big. And I'm lazy enough to finish my work [Plus I have works for other games too.]
Edit: I forgot to mention that I can't figure out what to draw to make a good tileset [Most probably due to lack of creativity]. ![]()

That would indicate there's something wrong with the palette or size of the file. For size, you just have to double-check the pixel size and make sure it's the standard wideness and that the height falls within multiplications of 32. For Palette you should look up TilesetPal and make sure that a proper palette is present and everything is indexed. For further palette work you might want to lookup PalSuite.
And btw, this guide by Disguise still is an excellent read even though it's slightly outdated now. It focuses entirely on Paint Shop Pro 8 for palette application and color reduction, while TilesetPal sure is the better choice above anything nowadays.

Yeah I really shouldn't make the tileset in MSpaint. I just don't wanna download drawing programs.
In case anyone wants to try and build it in their JCS, here is the tileset and it's mask (this ain't even half of the tileset i was originaly going to draw) ![]() ![]() Also the multicolor pallete thingy was used for measuring purposes. I didn't use a GRID. |

By the looks of it I'd assume you haven't saved the image as 8-bit, assuming you're using Paint. If you had it would have messed with your palette. I'd suggest either saving as 8-bit in paint (not recommended, it'll mess up the colours), using a program like TilesetPal to reduce the colours (will keep your colours but is tedious to do repeatedly) or download a program that'll keep the palette intact like GraphicsGale or (maybe?) Paint.NET.

![]() How ironic. I named it to 'a failed tileset.j2t' thinking it won't work, when it did xD EDIT: Okay, the tileset works fantastic. There is only one bug which is my coloring fault, actually! ![]() Yes, the purple part I mean, what's the color for the purple/blue that's supposed to be transparent in JJ2? Since my tileset is basicly planned to be an enterier (or how do you spell it), i guess i should just color that purple/blue part. EDIT: I found the purple/blue that doesn't exist in JJ2, thus transparent. Problem solved ![]() Last edited by Jelly Jam; Feb 16, 2015 at 06:49 AM. |

Can someone point me to a good textured JJ2 background tutorial somewhere? I thought I had gotten it right with the position of the pallette and all, but it looks awful in 8-bit-mode.
![]() Man, I used to be able to do that when I was younger. I forgot everything, lol. |

The safest textured background palette entries are 176-207. It's important to ensure that every color from the 176-207 range is used in your tileset image, otherwise JCS will try to be helpful and, during tileset compilation, regardless of settings, replace the unused entries with colors it thinks are more important (mostly for better 8-bit color ambient lighting). This won't make a difference in 16-bit color mode because it uses smart gradients, but 8-bit mode just assumes colors in the background range create valid transitions, and if, thanks to JCS, they don't, well, results can be terrible.
Or that's what I assume because I never actually looked into that part of code. Sounds like a good enough explanation though.

After a bit of time, I decided to participate too. Well it's beginning, I'll give you a little image and you should guess what could the theme be. (Also I just finished 1 tile):
![]() I might not be the greatest tileset maker, I didn't even really finished one tileset.

And don't worry, I'm really bad at tileset making as well. In fact, my contest entry for this thing is actually my first tileset ever ;p EDIT: Error! Width of image file "an image.bmp" is 1024 (should be 320) Done - 0 successfull build(s), 1 error(s) This happened when i wanted to update my tileset... I didn't change the size of it loooool |

You can keep me out of this contest, Trey. Forget about it! I'm just having so much trouble making each block fit with my system. Also on every corner I have a problem.
When i say 'Woohoo! I solved that one!',there is, and there always will be a problem. I just don't want to go through this, thanks to this contest, now i see that tileset building is NOT my thing! |

Haha oh boy. So who's actually still in? My tileset is about 70% done. I'm surprised at how well it's coming along, even though dealing with the pallette madness is a nightmare. I'm slowly getting the hang of it though, lmao.
Come on guys and gals, get up! I can't wait to see what you come up with! If you have too much trouble with non-connecting edges, maybe make a 2D block-based tileset? Those, too, can look amazing. <3 snzspeed, I think that's beautiful so far! Keep it up! |
