Unhappy I'm so sorry, everyone

A couple weeks ago Risp was programming artificial intelligences. I suddenly was inspired by this to try my hand at AI'ing again. I already had a history of mediocre AI-only games, so I decided to continue the old series. Eventually Risp, Dev, and Lem ended up helping, too.

Thus, http://www.foxmage.com/RadFaw3.zip . Zero-player goodness.
(A musicless version is here, if you don't feel like downloading all of the above file.)

Discuss.

I guess I should start running ToU again now...

Everyone else has said the Radiums look like they have an advantage. It's actually completely balanced, as far as I know.

Yeah I kind of realized that after watching a few more matches. The Faws still won more often.

If they do it's something that coded itself into the game while me and Rad weren't looking.
But seriously, both sides do the same thing for projectile attacks- they make a projectile and point it in the direction of the nearest enemy. There isn't anything that determines accuracy; the only way they can miss is if the enemy moves out of the way (which happens often, of course).

There's also a few pieces of code we added but never determined the function of. Did we ever figure out if that script to make them help eachother if they were outnumbered actually did anything?

I think it does.. sort of.. I see massive group raids, only be countered by suddenly formed bigger groups. (not much solo fighting, but a lot of teaming up..)

Indeed, thanks.

I found a bug, though. When a sprite goes nearly off the edge of the screen everyone attacking him will cease doing so.

Fun game...my first battle lasted 119 seconds, with 27 Faws left. Best unit was a 'level 5 F awriel' (with the space ). One level 4 Fawriel, still alive, lasted 98 seconds...pretty cool. Another battle lasted 198 seconds...

EDIT: I watched 10 games, and Fawriel won 7 of them. Are the maps randomly chosen or are they generated? Is it ok if I tell non-community people about this (as in, give the link on other forums)?

I actually added this intentionally. Originally we were having problems where too much action was happening off the map. Instead of adding a wall around the map (which would mean actually giving them collision detection) we decided to have them ignore people outside. It also drains your health to be out there, to keep anyone from hiding.

@Boggy: Stijn is correct, it was coded in Game Maker.

@Everyone else: Thanks =D

Oh, and @WR: Sure, feel free to post anywhere. But mention to send any feedback to a@foxmage.com, if possible. And maps are randomly chosen from a list, but there's a setting to make it cycle through them.

EDIT: I sill don't know if the code that makes them help eachother does much. I ran a whole bunch of high-speed tests where only one side had that enabled, and the side with it won only 51-60. That's not a big difference.

The title page is from the Series of Unfortunate Events movie. The other battle music is from Ratchet and Clank 3, I believe. And the victory music is from Star Wars Episode 1. I'm glad you don't want to know where the Japanese one is from, because I forget.

They are the casting circle Rads make when they cast spells. Originally when I made them they were pentagrams but Radium asked me to change it.

I had this thought, too. Just make it fullscreen and restart automatically and I'd love to have it as a screensaver. It's quite entertaining.

On my system either side won evenly, usually the last losing team would win.

It's not hard to turn an EXE into a screensaver, but I'm not sure everything that should change. Would you want the sound gone? It to close on mouse movement? Automatic transitions is a given, of course.

After a few humiliating defeats at the hands of the Forces of Rad, the Faw Squad exterminated most of the Forces of Rad and drove them back into an area with a hamburger. Then some new Rads spawned and killed a lotta Faws. Eventually, it was a match between a heroic (not really) level 6 Faw who kept hogging the hamburger and some evil dark Rad thing who used Matrix movements (also hogging a hamburger.) Due to a lot of Faws spawning at once, even the uber-Rad couldn't kill all of them with uber lightning spells before he was killed.

Sound would be optional. You could turn it off in the 'Settings' menu most screen savers have, as well as all of the other options. Along with that you could choose, perhaps, if you want it to close via mouse movement, any key being pressed, or both. Or neither so that you have to go into task manager.

The thing is, I don't know how to modify the settings window.

I put together a basic screensaver of it at http://www.foxmage.com/RFScreenie.scr . It doesn't have sound, music or a title page, and will automatically go to the next map after a few seconds at the victory screen. You should note, however, I wasn't sure how to make it work right in the Screensaver Settings preview window. When it should be appearing in the preview window it just starts regularly. Other than that, it should work fine.

So I made that my screen saver and it proceded to change my background to 'rimg0231' which was completely black..

The settings menu/preview are the two difficult aspects of making a screen saver work properly. I imagine a little googling would produce good results, though doing it in gamemaker is probably a trick.
