The 'narf' smiley

A long time ago,
in this forum,
there used to be a 'narf' smiley, with somebody opening his mouth wide. Where has it gone? Why has it been removed?
...and what IS narf?

Narf is a stupid expression from the Steven Spielberg animated series Pinky and the Brain used by Pinky at random moments. It's just like saying "duh".

I don't know what happened to either smilie (maybe just lost through our various upgrades), but if someone finds a copy of the image or is willing to make a new one, they would not be very difficult to add.

I've added that image for the Lori smilie. I don't think it was the original one (I thought it was animated), but it will do for now.

By the way, if you have created original smilies they could probably be added. We've had the same ones for a very long time now and something new, especially community-created, might be nice.

I would say yes. While other smilies may still add value, they wouldn't have the same sense of pride or sentimentality that community-created ones would have. Rather than "just another smilie", they would be "a smilie that ___ created". Compare this to the forum themes. We have the standard vBulletin theme, but all the others were created by community members.

A Fooruman smilie, for example, has a lot of significance to a lot of people because the Fooruman character is so well-known in the community. Though FQuist might dismiss it with subjunctive antiquities, it may be just the kind of smilie that the JCF needs.

(If the creator of that Fooruman image gives permission, I will add it, though a more smilie-like version might be better).

Bleh, I'd rather not have a fooruman smilie.
I sense it'd be smilie raped to death instead of being used at times when it would be funny or apporitate.

Say we wanted to create one, what color is used for the "transparent" area around the rest of the smiley - so that it does not have the colored square around it? As in the Jazz-Blue color used in JCS tilesets.

If I'm being referred to as the creator of the Fooruman image, then it's fine with me if it's used as a smilie. I can't do anything to make it more smilielike though, since I lack pretty any skill in pixel art.

Did you actually create the image? That's what I meant by permission, that the person who made it give us permission to use it.

Actual transparency should be used, because there are many different background colours on the JCF. This is something you set in the image properties, and it depends on the file type.

And watch out with anti-aliasing, it will kill compatibility with different themes and transparency.

(I am not forbidding the addition of a Fooruman image at all, by the way. I thought it was clear I wasn't speaking out against it as an administrator. I merely share n00b's fears of it being used inappropiately)

Yeah, other than the names, Fooruman and Terexin are very similar. You would find a secret treasure room and then later talk to him and he'd say, "You'll never find the treasure room! Ha ha!"

What program is it that has an actual transparent color? I didn't mean to just set it to the same color as the background

I don't know a great deal about digital imaging, but a graphics program that lets you save as GIF or PNG should let you choose a "transparent" colour. You may have to go into options or something, but it will be there somewhere. Just pick a colour that shows up only as the background, and nowhere else in the image. For example, I could make an image with a blue background, save it as a GIF with blue set as the transparent colour, and when viewed in a web browser it would show up as transparent.

Fquist, if that was intended for me (as I was the only one who mentioned your comment), I apologize for making my joking tone inevident. If you'll read carefully though, you'll notice I said 'subjunctive' and not 'subjective', referring not to your opinion but to your literal use of "God forbid".

Thank you Sonyk for clarifying. You can now (dis)grace your posts with Fooruman's presence using :fm:.

I was going to ask you what subjunctive was, as the dictionary did not help me out . Apology accepted and apologies for taking it seriously so easily.

Slaz: I see the *EVIL* smiley used pretty regularly, well, not compared to the basic emotion-displaying smileys like the :) or the ;) smiley, but compared to the other smilies its use is not that infrequent. Latest example I can think of the use of the smiley as someone's running mate in the inofficial JCF elections. People seem to think of the size of the smiley as its main asset. For example, the smaller evil smiley, , is less commonly used.
