Left 4 Dead

Has anyone else been playing the demo?
Just played it for half an hour and Jesus, this game is awesome. So many tense and fun moments I can recount already, like the idiot teammember who set off the car alarm that sent a zombie orgy after us. And then being swarmed and pinned to the ground, laying there trying to shoot the zombies not only off of me but another nearby teammate who was also being swarmed. The first time I got Boomer bile on me, and trying to see what was going on past the green gunk and accidently shooting my teammates.

This is THE zombie game.

I purchased it, but haven't got around to installing it yet. It looks amazing, though. I'm waiting until I can play it online (I can't due to my location. ) because the multiplayer element of it sounds insanely fun from what I've heard. And your post pretty much confirmed it for me.

I've had my eye on it for a while, and impressions everywhere are good. Downloading the demo now, but I'll probably go ahead and impulse buy... on the first price drop.

Demo is quite awesome. Though the difficulty could do some adjusting, or hopefully there are much longer levels too.

Single Player is pretty lame and it's too short, but well, it's still a demo of course. Depending on your team online play is definitely awesome. It was quite fun how in one game me and my team kept dying and made really slow progress but there was this great feeling of team spirit and I had a lot of fun, and in another game we went rambo-style and got to the exit without anyone dying once, yet this was a lot less fun because everyone was mainly doing his own thing.

But as soon as it really gets cooperative, the game's amazing.

I've downloaded it from XBLM the other day. Very awesome game indeed, the special zombies are fun and the so is the scoring system.
There is both an element of competition and teamwork in it.

I agree with Nakke however, I hope the levels in the actual game are a bit bigger. I'm not sure wheter I will buy it or not either, I think it can get repetitive rather quickly.

apperantly

Also, the game was downloaded surprisingly fast after my last comment. It took about an hour, but the thing is, as I launched it, the game asked me to update my drivers, (I really did need an update) and froze. And it dosen't work since. God damn it Valve

Everything I want to say about L4D has already been said in this thread. Excellent if it's hard, too easy on normal, fun with friends, shines when it kicks your (-)(-)(-).

19,500. That's good. Is that good? I think it's good.

Anyway, as Steam worked today, I gut to play the game. The first time going I went single player on normal mode. It was preety damn annoying, as there were 5 boomers at the first floor. And my teammates let me die. The next time I tried there was one boomer, but I was too afrad to shoot him, as I thought that's what triggered him puking on me in the first place. So he puked on me. And the zombies nuked me. The THIRD time there was no boomer, and I finished the demo learning all the basics, one of my teammates was stupid enough to trigger the (female dog)witch, and it was preety disappointing seeing her true lameness.

Next, I played online, with an expert group playing advanced. It was a sweet rush, and there was actual TEAMPLAY (not even achived in TEAM fortress, so cheers for Valve). Even when I did get to play with idiots they knew they don't (-)(-)(-)(-) around with witches.

Conclusion:

Good game, boring on normal, the second level is a bit hard on advanched, and damn, the witch in the ending video gut me very (-)(-)(-)(-)ing startled.

Aww, I wouldn't say that. Team Fortress definitely rewards teamplay, but L4D makes it completely vital. Those attacks that constrict your movement basically mean instant death if you're on your own.

Anyway, overall I was actually kind of disappointed in the game. Like Icon said, the team dynamics were very good, but IMO the environments weren't that spectacular, neither in design nor appearance. A lot of them just didn't make sense; I had no idea why there was a table of ammo and weapons sitting in a zombie-filled subway, a minigun mounted in a turbine room, or a fully prepared Molotov standing in a hard-to-get-to apartment closet.

I felt they could've gone a step further and really shown the scope of the zombie catastrophe if they'd added more story-like details to the environment - like, maybe a dead, mutilated body slumped over that minigun and implications that he thought he had the perfect hiding place until zombies broke through the floorboards behind him. I was especially surprised because HL2's zombie parts did this so well: Ravenholm had those headcrab-less zombies lying on tables with medkits where Grigori or someone had presumably tried to de-zombify them, and there was a part in Episode 2 where a lawn chair, box of beer, and crate of SMG grenades was set up over a radioactive zombie pit. Every pickup had a story behind it; even weapon caches were hidden by rebels for other rebels to use, and marked as such.

The level design was also very HL2-like, and I don't think that was too good for a game this dynamic. I was told I had to go to the subway, but finding the subway was a matter of following a basically linear path and killing anything in your way. There oftentimes wasn't a set idea of where you ultimately had to head; rather, you just had to assume that if you kept walking along a path and kill everything in your way you'd win.

The sound in the game, though, was brilliant. That seems like a minor thing, but it really played a big role. Music got more intense when you were being swarmed and more tense just beforehand, and the automatic voice statements felt very natural (my character yelled "molotov over here!" before I could even touch the Voicechat key). My favorite part was definitely when you died, though: sad music plays and the sound becomes muffled and background-like while camera pans in on your team (who are probably getting swarmed by zombies and trying their hardest to fend them off with one less man) and you might hear Zoey scream "NO!! Not Louis!". It felt very cinematic and well done.

Overall, though, to me it felt polished but like it wasn't living up to its full potential. It imitated HL2 at the wrong times and not at the right ones.

I guess Valve just wanted to attract the CS mind (linear). You have all of them zombies on you too, you can't look at details.

Have you guys seen the "Orange Box" poster? It's funny.

I'm not saying it's a bad game. It presented a more polished co-op experience than any other game I've played, but environment design was unimpressive and didn't really leave any lasting impression on me, which was disappointing because their other games were amazing in this regard. Half Life 2 had dark, imposing Combine fortifications hastily put into place and contrasting with the run-down Russian buildings. Portal presented a clean, white, laboratory environment with cameras and foggy windows suggesting you were being watched, and occasional breaks through the wall showcasing the gritty, mechanical innards of the complex. Even Team Fortress 2 had a comical setting where mining towns and factories turned out to be facades for secret-agent-esque missile silos and high-tech military corporations. But Left 4 Dead was just a city full of zombies and weapons; its setting failed to have any memorable, iconic flavor or, at least to me, provide any real interest.

I'm holding them to the high standard they set in Half Life 2, though.

This analogy makes no sense. The Mario the world as a whole is so absurdly different from reality that I'm all willing to accept that mushrooms give me powers and giant turtles with a spiked shell spit fireballs at me. In Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead, on the other hand, the developer obviously tried to create a convincing, realistic environment. A table full of ammo and guns, in the middle of a zombie-infested but otherwise abandoned building, makes little sense and sort of breaks the immersion created by the otherwise rather realistic environment.

If you need a rational explanation for your shootemup Zombie apocalypse game, here's one: They were left behind by other survivors who wound up being less fortunate.

Except for the machine gun. I actually agree with Rad on that one.

It seemed to me hat they weren't going for realism but making it more like a B movie style zombie film where a table full of ammo and guns, in the middle of a zombie-infested but otherwise abandoned building, is the norm.

I thought that was the direction too (I thought the movie poster mission opening made it obvious), but the Machine gun bit still seemed weird even for a B movie Zombie flick. Just a bit too convenient.

Doing a parody gives excuses for everything.

Interviewer:"But Developer, why would insert famus gaming company make a game with only 9 colurs, and the entire gameplay is mashing the mouse buttons?!"
Developer:"Because It's a parody. I you do not find it entertaining you are stupid and unpopular."

Speaking of that, I hope that Valve or a modding team adds in a "survival mode" where you have to go through the entire game with no checkpoints (but less enemies to compensate). It'd certainly make the game more interesting and realistic.

If the sound was lame you could blame it on bad sound in zombie movies. Bad camera. Bad... everything. Parodies stress the BAD THINGS.

The game I was talking about could easly parody bad ol' NES games (with a mouse).

Someone here has never actually played a good parody game. Parodies do not stress bad, usually just absurdities.

Does anyone but Skeven and myself have this game? It's very awesome, but it would be even more fun if we could get a four player game up and running.

Kind of agree with these. Despite my general disappointment towards it, the teamplay mechanics are nice and I'd probably pick it up if it hits 15 or 20. "Team up with friends to fight monsters" is a pretty common premise in games (even free ones), and while L4D does it well, I don't feel like it does it 50 dollars well. Especially considering Valve's other recent games like TF2, Portal, Episode 1, and Episode 2 started between the 20 and 30 mark.

Half Life. I've just bought the game for less than a dollar. Now that's a deal.
