The Devil Devan Boss is the final endboss in Jazz Jackrabbit 2‘s singleplayer campaign and probably the most often used boss in various user-created singleplayer levels/episodes. He’s located in Bad Pitt, the last level of the Funky Monkeys episode and thus the last level of the game. He was one of the latest bosses implemented into JJ2.
Devan Shell in his secondary devil form
When the fight starts, Devan Shell appears in the arena. He looks exactly the same as he did in the first Jazz Jackrabbit game – in that he’s a short, teal and purple-shelled turtle, walking on two legs and wearing thick glasses.
After the first phase of fight, Devan changes his form and turns into Devil Devan. The changes are drastic – Devan becomes much bigger, turns into light green, grows muscles, horns wings and a tail. When he’s defeated in that form, he changes back into a turtle, falls down onto the ground, and warps away while looking fairly dizzy.
It’s worth a mention that the final cutscene ends differently, where Devan attempts to use the time machine once again and is squashed by a giant rock.
In his first form, Devan will simply run around the arena, occasionally jumping and shooting when he is close to the player. Remember when he gets close to you jump away as his fireball move fast! After Devan has taken a beating he will transform into Devil Devan. While he’s transforming try and get a couple of licks in. After his transformation, he will follow you through the arena and spit fireballs at you. The fireballs are pretty harmless unless your right underneath him. When swooping at you, he moves fairly fast, but when rising to reach you, he is fairly slow. For a nice finish when Devil Devan has very little health left do an uppercut of a side kick to get points and to see Devil Devan’s pieces go flying!
EndText: the ID of the text string that is displayed after the boss is killed. In 1.00g, Devan says “This level is not done.”
