I decided to just release this without making sure it’s exactly how I want it. It’s another JJ2 tileset edit, but I’m more satisfied with this one than my Castle 2 tilesets. I didn’t spend as much time, but I did more work with editing the palette. I included a day and a night version, as well as four levels: a modified treasur3.j2l and three example levels. I fixed the masking and I made it possible to use the spikes so they work better. You’ll have to use some of the unmasked grass tiles in the tileset, and I included an example level to show how they would look. EvilMike challenged me to make the spikes work and so I did it (I think). Anyway, download these tilesets and rate how they look compared to the old Psych ones.
The pallettes look awesome. But still, Psych is a VERY HARD to use it and understand. But still, as a conversion you did a good job.
While this conversion does make a few important mask fixes and adds some useful tiles, the new palettes are incredibly dull. Gone are the funky, psychedelic colors that defined the original set; this conversion replaces them with monochrome shades of blue/grey. They look decent on their own, but greatly detract from the theme of the set.
Ah, it looks like another default tileset redoing (if you will) by BlurredD. My hands are tired from reviewing Spaztic’s megalong megaspiffular SXR pack from yesteryear, so I will make this unusually to-the-point and, most of all, short. Yay.
THEME: The theme seems to be Psych in a storm. I suppose I am a little surprised since I never knew what Psych would exactly look like during a storm, but it looks pretty cool. I prefer the night version because for some reason it appears a little less dreary. Very well done, but I’m not sure how to rate the theme exactly.
GRAPHICS: This is, after all, a redoing of an original tileset. Still, the graphics look very nice. Well done, and the added tiles look quite nice.
Pros: Well done graphics.
Cons: It’s a remake, so it is not technically entirely original.
INVENTORY: Everything from the original Psych, of course, is here, and a few added tiles such as rain are also included. I didn’t really think anything more that is not included in this version needed to be added, so I am perfectly content with this.
Pros: Everything needed is here.
Cons: Nothing to note.
ORIGINALITY: It’s a remake, so there is not that much originality. I suppose the idea behind making a stormy Psych is new, and I haven’t seen many Psych remakes, so this is alright in orginality. Again, however, it is not technically orginally BlurredD’s.
Pros: It is original for the type of tileset it is.
Cons: It’s not that original.
COMPETITION: Competition would be the default Psych tilests, I guess. And since this is simply an adding onto them, the competition is pretty much non-existant.
(No pros given)
(No cons given)
(No rating given)
EASE OF USE: Psych has never been a very easy to use tileset, and this does not do anything more to make it easier to use. But that just is not the point of the tileset. The point is that it is a very cool tileset.
MASKING: Masking is more or less the same as it was in the original Psych. The added tiles have good masks. The spikes still have slight problems.
Pros: Good masking.
Cons: Spikes are not totally fixed.
OVERALL (not an average): This is a good remake of Psych, I suppose. I’ll be brief, and say my final rating is 8.0. Well done.
Pros: Well done remake.
Cons: Not much original material.
Rating: 8.0[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]
I have seen that ya make many good conversions and editions. This is also good one, but the xample levels were not good. They were so short. so 0.5 points because that. Make good example levels or not at all. See ya!
Let me just first say that this one I liked more than your castle one. Though I sometimes despise the set psych, I really like this version. My first impression was wow. I had never really expected it to be this good. Firstly, the backround has a nifty color to it, the blue is amazing. The backround mountains look cool too, I especially liked the ones with the musical instruments. next, the color of those rocks is an amazing idea. I espicially like that you’ve added in the unmasked rocks to make some scenery look cavish. The rock color i loved. The colors of varius things such as the magical hat or the guitar or mushrooms was also done quite well, really nice to look at. The spikes are made well, I couldnt get stuck in them, though I tried many times to. Also, it seems that BlurredD has added in some extra tiles. Not to much, but the tiles he added in are really useful and boosted the mark up by some. There is some small rain. Though I dont like how it’s drawn, it still is a good addition. There is the beautiful looking waterfalls which I really like, they’re definately a good addition and make the set more interesting. Also some unmasked rock scenery to make caves and stuff, which also makes the set more interesting and less “one themed”. The palette is quite good. The reason I didnt give this like a 9 or something is mainly because, it just doesnt feel like psych anymore. Sure, the colors are great and everything, if this tileset was the first of its kind, I would rate much higher. When I played it I felt like I was in a completely different place, not psych, but a mountanous region. Though this doesnt stop people from using this set, I still lowered the mark by a bit for it, because it feels like a completely different set, not a remake of psych. But like Trafton mentioned in his review, I completely admired the idea of a stormy psych =)
The vedict: This is a great set, with no real cons that interfere with levelmaking. The idea is great, and I do like this more than the original psych. Not only that but there are extra very useful tiles to make the set more interesting and different themed. The infamous spike bug is fixed here, so you wont have to type in jjk and loose lifes every time you get stuck in a level with this set. Anyways, its really great and all, but not too original. A definite download reccomendation from me.
The conversion of Psych is, like the other BluredD-JJ2-edits, very nice.
The extra things are the nice remake of the spikes, wich is a total level maked for it, the waterfall, wich is a very nice addition for background.
Other things are the rain, wich can be used in big ans little drops.
Anyway, the tileset Psych-remake is a very amazing idea and this tileset will be used much times. The problem is, it’s totally different themed, wich is normally okay, but it does like Trafton said not as Psych anymore. The coleed world is a bit falled in a old black-white stone area.
I like this set anyway, and it’s very userfriendly so I’ll give a eight point two and download reccomendation.
Pretty good, but the additions wern’t really necciary- except for the spikes fix.
Yet another nice conversion by BlurredD, and not a jj1 conversion either. I think the palette edit was quite good.
Probably the new, most memorable aspect is the water falls; when you think of Psych you probably don’t think of water falls, but they fit in nicely.
BlurredD made a CTF level with this tileset that I saw long ago, I’m surprised he didn’t release it along with this conversion, since it shows just how well you can use this set.
The biggest down fall of this conversion is what it was converted from: Levels made with Psych will probably look very similar to one another, like Carrottus and Diamondus levels (You’re welcome to prove me wrong IF you can make a level that looks totally different from what the tileset is mainly designed for).
The most use out of this is the fixed spikes. I’d say this is a VERY important factor and one of the main reasons you should download.
…And I can’t think of anything else important to describe about this set, just download and use it if you will.
It’s good. The rain feels cool. ;)
I like this. ;p You can do lots of stuff with this… make gloomy caves with waterfalls, make it at night time with rain, or make it in the day time… Download reccomendation.
The advantage of this conversion is that you’ve added some new tiles here : raindrops, waterfalls, lake and hills… With this tileset I’m not getting stuck into the spikes. That’s OK.
As for the palettes- now there are less colors. The grownd is just gray, without any colored spots. It’s a bit dull, this way you’ve reduced the diversity of the palette…
Eat your lima beans, Johnny.
