Total Annihilation II: Aftershock
Music Total Annihilation II: AftershockAfter many years it is finally here.. (2010 or so..)
The pack supposedly would have 6 levels, in 2016 I decided to create 3 more levels for the pack.
I know I started this project during the first Total Annihilation pack.
It all started with Valhalla, Gephyrophobia, Sidewinder and Zanzibar.
These levels were originally made for Total Annihilation I, but I have decided to move these to the second pack.
The reason for this was that these levels took so much time to create and I just didn’t find any time to finish them.
Gephyrophobia, Sidewinder and Zanzibar orignally had different designs but I scrapped the levels like three times.
Also please note that all the levels have been redone. So the bash versions are outdated.
So all these levels are fairly large and not designed for duels nor 2v2’s. Some might work though but I don’t encourage any serious duels in like any of these maps. Especially Sidewinder, Coagulation, Gephyrophobia and Adrift.
Now onto the package, shall we?
CTF List
Coagulation:
When I saw the tileset conversion by Violet I felt that this tileset needed a map aside from it’s example level. I immediately started building Coagulation and it has a symmetrical layout which should be balanced. It is fairly large and I wouldn’t recommend playing any serious duels, 2v2’s, 3v3’s here. This map is mainly aimed for JDC events. This level took my approximetaly 1 month to create. I later on placed a script and added a few layers to the background.
Sidewinder:
The weirdest map of the package. I always wanted to create a good looking Inferno level, since the tileset is very challenging. The layout is very confusing and so is the eyecandy sometimes. I used lightening to brighten up the base areas so these wouldn’t be hard to find. This level is aimed for 3v3’s and upward, though duels and 2v2’s are possible, but isn’t recommended.
Zanzibar:
I know this level had like 2 different names. Sunken Sands was one of those. I wanted to create a map with quicksand and I asked PJ to make a pallette edit of his famous Beach+ tileset conversion. He agreed to create one for me with my own suggestions. I know this level had like 3 different layouts but I wasn’t very pleased with the result. Then I decided to create a shipwreck which has landed on the surface. The result was mindblowing for me, with some script snippets from PJ and this level was good to go. This level works for 3v3’s and upward.
Eden:
A late bloomer. I really loved the tileset when I first saw it, but it was so damn dark and purplely. I decided to get rid of that purple background and purple background trees to make something outstanding. My girlfriend really loves the pink flowers in this map. The map uses the famous bubble gun as replacement of the ice gun. This level works for duels and upward.
Battle List
Valhalla:
This level took me about 2 years to finish. Later I decided I wanted a scripted custom weapon since I felt that the ice was rather useless. So I came up with the idea of a Light Bomb which stuns the players for a few seconds in a certain range. Valhalla was also designed with a life system. The player would be granted 3 lives and every time they fell into the pit they lost a life but they would still keep their ammo. With a coin system the player would be granted their 3 lives back as soon as they entered the coin warp. I felt the system wouldn’t work out well so I scrapped the idea. The level is orignally designed for JDC battle events.
Gephyrophobia:
A huge map with loads of bridges. This level took me the longest by far. It is 500 tiles wide by 100, quite a big playroom for you rabbits. This level was designed for large JDC events. Also the bash version of this map had a few flaws still.
Adrift:
A city demolished by a tsunami. This map has a very unique layout. The middle is a maze with many roads to traverse in. This map hasn’t had an update in the past years. The level is suited for larger games as 3v3’s and upward. Duels and 2v2’s might work but please set a timelimit before doing so.
Riddleham Hope Hall:
An ancient castle in the middle of the great lands of Britain. This level has been added to the pack one year ago. I really love the theme of the map and I think the graphic and music really fits the theme of an ancient castle. This level works best for 2v2’s and 3v3’s and upward. Duels might work but not recommended
Djibouti:
A country split in two by calm river. This level orignally was designed and created for a contest which was held over 2 years ago. It was a contest which you had to create a map with an underused tileset. Well, since there are no other entries (still..?) I think I’ve won! No, just kidding. Since this was orignally made for a contest featuring tilesets which haven’t been used much I think this is still a overall good looking map. The level suits 2v2’s, 3v3’s and upward.
Well this pack took me way too long to finish up. I’m glad I can finally share the full result with you guys. Please do not edit my work before contacting me, I would really appreciate it.
Take care.
LooƱ
None of these levels struck me as being very solid or classics, especially because of Adrift’s confusing one-way/non-one-way platforms and Sidewinder’s questionable flow, but they are still very impressive in most aspects and very fun.
Great layouts and rich eyecandy. I like them all but Riddlehamhope hall is my favorite.
I’m going to briefly review each of the levels in this list:
Coagulation:
One of my favorite big-ctf-games level, aesthetically looking, especially the sun, the bases areas and mid-upper section are cool, and awesome music!
Sidewinder:
I like the tileset as it’s not used so often, eyecandy/BG is good. However I think it would be more fit to be a battle map rather than a CTF as the roads are kinda confusing for a CTF map and it gets easy to go astray.
Zanzibar:
Cool layout and theme, espiecally the ship in the background, the flying carrot and the pickups at the top are a nice addition too. Definitely one of my favorite CTF levels using this set.
Eden:
It has bubbles which automatically makes it a good map .A fast paced CTF level. Cool level theme, layout is great, would definitely play CTF matches here
Valhala:
A fun level for medium/big games, especially the bottom area. The stun gun is original and cool (but might irritate some sensitive players). Layout flows good.
Gephyrophobia:
A HUGE level, definitely fun to play in, you might get lost in its vastness, but it’s not a problem, since bubbles weapon fixes everything :)
Adrift:
A gloomy city, played many times here, recommended for large games, It’s good overall in terms of layout and eyecandy. Though I think the other battle levels in this pack are better than this one.
Riddleham Hope Hall:
A rainy castle surrounded by lakes. Fun level for medium sized games (possibly big too), I always like Castle themed levels, including this one of course. Water area is nice too.
Djibouti:
Definitely a unique level as it’s the only level I’ve ever seen with this tileset. Great layout, nice river at the background and the water at the bottom is pretty shiny.
Overall this is a great pack and it is clear that lots of work has been put into it. Download recommended.
