Description

I made the first two of these maps for JJnet’s Domination map making contest and then kinda kept going and ended up making six all-new DOM maps in all, one for each tileset in JJ2’s first two episodes. All layer 8 backgrounds are static images of areas in Genshin Impact, and the rest of the levels are themed to various extents (e.g. weapon choice) to match those areas, but they’re still just JJ2 DOM maps at their core and you don’t need any external knowledge.

Besides Genshin, the other major inspiration for these was Duck Game, whose maps are almost invariably a series of flat platforms above a death pit in front of a static image background with minimal (or zero) parallax scrolling. The choices of available weapons in each Duck Game map are a major part of the gameplay, and so I tried to design these to have their layouts and weapons in conversation with/tailored to each other, rather than come up with a layout on its own and then throw generic ammo everywhere. The focus on smallish platforms (and the interesting combat possibilities arising from their arrangements) also helped me create these maps in much less time than I’d have needed for larger levels with long passages and so on. Ammo tends to respawn quickly and there aren’t many carrots: people ought to kill each other.
