I thought I had mentioned this already, but I guess I didn't after all.
It would be awesome if JJ2+ supported new events and event parameters to perform special things. As there are a lot of unused event numbers, it wouldn't cause problems for non-plussers. Examples could be: -boolean parameter "No plus" for "Warp" that disables the warp for JJ2+ users -similar things for many other events -new options in the easy/normal/hard/multiplayer list like "Plus only", "LRS only", "Race only" etc. (only possible if normal JJ2 ignores events with difficulty set to something nonexistent) Also, as most community members have already switched to Plus, I think that a cooperation with the list server shouldn't be impossible. It's clearly stated here that custom game modes could possibly be supported by the listserver and now that we finally have them semi-implemented into JJ2 it might be the time to implement them into the lists too. No more "unknown", just 'clear' (or at least more to-the-point) things like "Race" "Co-op" "LRS" "Pestilence" "XLRS" "RT" "DCTF" "JB" "FR" "GF" "Hotel". Of course clearer names are fine too. It's just not fair to call GroundForce a Treasure Hunt game D: For more event ideas, just put a PM in my inbox (causing a mail in my mailbox which in turn causes a popup on my monitor) and I'll get my RRR concept ideas to see what kind of events my brains have produced in the past.

Nimrod has been posting about the listserver idea here. I've just been too absentminded to post it as j2o news

When I check F9 it's usually about 4 of every 5 players using + already... and I don't think it would completely break the GIP list for non-plussers.
As for the 'No plus' events, you could use them to move non-plussers into Text events telling them the level is to be played with JJ2+ and where they can get it. I'm sure not every new level will be playable only with plus, but if there ever come plus-only events that do special things normal JJ2 can't do, I think a simple event parameter can be very useful to block the level (or provide alternative functionality) for non-plussers. If the instant kill system with CtF bases can't be fixed (or if something else turns out to be broken and can't be fixed) this could provide very good alternatives too. One more idea: -Event "Wallclimbing" with boolean parameter "On": if set to 0, wallclimbing will be switched off if you hit this event; if set to 1, wallclimbing will be switched on if you hit this event. Very useful for GroundForce levels as you can disallow wallclimbing after the players have warped into the waiting room so they won't 'cheat'. Of course, the /wc command should set an initial value and should not be able to override the event.

The idea I had for the list servers, to ensure backwards compatibility was to make a second output of "games in progress" for JJ2+.
Therefore if a user is using JJ2+ they could see the full game type where's if someone was using an original JJ2 they would use the normal output and the game type would appear blank. It would take some work to pull off, but I'm sure if BlurredD wished to, we would be willing to give it a shot ![]() As the post that Fquist and Jerry linked to states, I'm very open to any community modifications to the list servers for JJ2+ and any other plugins, as long as backwards compatibility is kept. |
May 6, 2008, 05:04 AM | |
Ah yeah, a second list... that's a good idea. Are the listservers still running Epic's listserver program or are they using the (a) comunnity-created one already? I can imagine it will be easier to make modifications to something 'we' have made 'ourselves'. Anyway, it's up to you guys to discuss this =)

Hunter, I like those ideas. I am not sure how do-able they are, but I think something along the lines of your first suggestion would be absolutely brilliant.

Are you going to update it (ever)? Is there an update coming soon? Is it going to include some log saving-when-crashing solution?

I haven't been able to get any features to work except plusifier...
I used the plusifier to make jj2+ because plus didn't find my exe
so i start up. When i click plus settings it only has a box that says autorun which is unclickable. I have been unable to find any such settings as setting health to 1 for instagib, custom gametypes or anything. Anyone have and help/suggestions about something i may have done wrong? |
Jul 7, 2008, 05:56 PM | |
Ignore that plus settings box. It's non-functional. You can change the settings by editing the ini file, or by typing in the commands in-game by using chat. The readme file explains everything you need to know.

I had an idea for a custom gamemode. I've asked a few people about it and messaged Blur about it, but since everyone seems to like it already, I'll just post it here.
The gamemode will be called Metal Gear Rabbit. One player gets to be Snake, and all other players will be Rabbits. Snake's objective is to destroy a trigger crate (or more) without being shot. He only has one life and one heart. The Rabbits have to hunt him down before he gets to the trigger crate. This is a really hard task, so here's how Jazz2+ can help with that. When the game starts, the console says "{player} is now Snake." From that moment, whoever became Snake will have his name changed to be invisible. This makes it easier for him to hide behind layer3 scenery and in dark environment. Also, being Jazz is an advantage, since Jazz stands completely still when idle, and he has a bandana. Which makes him cool. Spaz could also duck or look up to create a pose in which he stands completely still, but you get the idea. A proper Metal Gear Rabbit level would have to feature layer3 obstacles, multiple routes to the objective and freezing weapons. Now here's a few thoughts about the gameplay I'd like your opinion on. What if the Rabbits also had one heart, but the bodies would remain, as if frozen (if possible with Jazz+)? That would encourage a bit more combat, but it would also give away an estimated position of the Snake. Frozen Rabbits will not be able to chat or move. My other idea is to completely discourage combat by giving Snake one heart, as usual, and the Rabbits would get three hearts. Either way, I suggest that there could be a function which alters the amount of time a player remains frozen when hit by ice. This way, Snake could immobilize a Rabbit that's in the way and sneak past. When the guard 'unfreezes', he'll be able to talk again, which in effect can be hazardous for Snake. If these options can be intergrated, the rest could be done with creative level design. I myself am really hyped of the idea that a sneaking game like this could be done in JJ2. Feedback is much appreciated. |

The 'camp near the objective' is indeed a bit of a nasty situation. Maybe if there's just more than one possible crate for Snake to aim for. ... and it may seems really unbalanced because Snake only has one heart, but the alternative isn't great either, 'cause that would give Snake the option to run for the crate, maybe get hit once and demolish it even though he was seen and shot. I'll think of something overnight, in the meanwhile, if Blur reads this, I'd like to hear wether the named functions (invisible name, one heart only for Snake, longer freeze duration, etc.) could be made possible with Jazz2+. Otherwise, I'll have to tweak this gametype even more. Edit: About the crate camping, local triggers can make it possible for only Snake to enter a certain area. Multiple routes would lead to this area, in which is the objective crate. A simple warp at the end of a route could get Snake into this area, while a Trigger Scenery wall makes it impossible for Rabbits to go there. |

Use co-op if you want monsters. It's basically the same game type, except no cheating is allowed.

That's the goal. To camp the route so you can kill the Snake. Sad for you, there are many routes so you'll have to be camping the right one.

If the level is mazy enough the Snake can sneak by unseen by choosing alternative paths.
Really, I think with a properly made level this could be awesome to play.

Actually, low detail doesn't disable layer 3, but you're right about the dark areas.

That would be a pretty good addition actually. Right now you can sort of do that by running a jailbreak level and just making it so there is no way to free people from jail, but it would be nice to be able to play that in any level and not just ones that are specially made.

Hmm, is there a way of turning off my saved settings? Because I made settings for an idle server but I thought it only loaded when I wrote /loadsettings... It actually does it every time. Is there a way of stopping this? (Yes I did read the manual)

I'm up with Hunter's idea, only informative for the newbies, but atleast better than rederecting them to a broken link.

A command for the server to mute people client side, because sometimes people are having spammish conversation on my servre and I don't reeally want to stop it, while I don't want to listen to it. Also maybe let the mute option still record the chat in the chatlog, just not appear in-game.
And I'l join Hunters string changing requests, how about a /rkick

And maybe something to add to the Plus Options dialog box: A "Start spectating on join (if enabled)" feature. Useful for just if someone wants to see who's on the server, etc, without actually playing.
