Ninja, Hugela knows that, but Sal told him to make it 0, and I agreed. We weren’t expecting Hugela to upload it, or we might have given better advice. shrug

Anyway, onto the review.

The level isn’t bad for a first CTF level ever, and I like it in a weird sort of way. I don’t like the V-Poles, and the food DOES respawn a bit fast. Anyway, it’s sorta fun to play, but a little small. The music is quite good though, it’s from RPG Maker 2003.

Overall, I give this level a 5. It’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s definitely NOT a piece of frozen unicorn nose.. but it’s a fun level, nonetheless. It has lava lamps. ;p

I actuallly never rated a CTF level before, so here I go.

Let’s see the graphics are great. You should make more entrances that go from the surface to the cave. Take out the hooks and add something else to climb to the top.

Base placement could be improved a tad bit. I liked the food, and amount of weapons, and weapon placement. Although make some of the weapons should be hidden. Add more ammo, too many spikes so get rid of some.

In conclusion, a 5.5 seems good.

This level has changed a lot since I originally beta tested it, for better or for worse. I am not exactly sure. However, this level does just feel a tad unfinished. Still, it is an OK Capture the Flag level and not bad for a first CTF level. It just needs some polishing.

EYECANDY
Tileset Use: The tilset used in this level was “Lava Lamp” by Skulgh. It’s a good tileset. In this level, the tileset was used questionably in some areas. In a few places, the mountains did not look quite right. Also, the background looks a bit strange. It’s weird walking across spikes. Also, this level seems to suffer somewhat from blockiness – a lot of the used tiles are just blocks.

+ PROS: Does not look horrible.
- CONS: Blocky. Odd background.
VERDICT: 5.0

Creativity in Tileset Use: There is not much creativity in tileset use here. Frankly, there is very little to speak of. The background looks unusual, but that’s a bad thing in this case. There are some interesting window use, but there is not anything ultra-amazing there.

+ PROS: Nothing that looks awful.
- CONS: Nothing very interesting, for that matter.
VERIDCT: 5.0

Tile Errors: It is often hard to decide whether something is a tile error or is just questionable tile use. In this case, I will have to say that there are a lot of questionable tile uses. Other than that, I suppose this measure is alright.

+ PROS: Not a huge amount of obvious tile errors.
- CONS: Questionable tile use in many places.
RATING: 5.0

PLACEMENT OF STUFF
Carrots: There are a few carrots scattered around in the level. They are placed more or less OK, but they seem to be scattered in a fashion that did not have much thought put into it.
+ PROS: Placement was OK.
- CONS: Still seemed a bit random.
VERDICT: 6.0

Powerups: Powerups were generally scattered randomly in plain sight. Not very good.
PROS: N/A
CONS: N/A
VERDICT: 4.5

Basic Weapons: Basic weapon placement was not bad, actually. In fact, I thought it was rather well-done. There was a little bit of randomness to it, but not much. Well done.

EVERYTHING ELSE BECAUSE I AM LAZY: This level is pretty good for a first level. I do not think that there is much to entice players to host it a lot, but it’s still OK. It needs some polishing, but is generally not bad. Well done. My final rating is 5.2.[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]

First CTF level? This should be good…

GAMEPLAY:

There isn’t much balance just from base placement (blue base – bottom right; red base – top right). For one thing, less poles (like zero or one pole) would be better at the top right, especially since that area isn’t worth going to too often. There is no flow and the layout needs major improvements. Also, the tubes in the level are too slow. Set them to 20 or something.

EYE CANDY:

Not that good eye candy. Either it looks average or much worse. I never really like background tiles being lined up with layer 4. The textured background looks bad in 16-bit and worse in 8-bit. And the spikes aren’t needed in the level. I find naming a level “Burnin lava” would mean the level has actually lava in it. Of course there isn’t any—just some boring lava lamps. Another tileset, like Skulg’s Where Bad Rabbits Go, would fit the title much better.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

It only uses +1 carrots—need I say more? A full energy carrot placed in between the bases would be better (or two full energy carrots). Ammo placement needs work; though, the powerup placement is slightly better. But there is TNT and that is if I had to guess, all of the generating events respawn too fast. Set the generator somewhere between 15 and 25.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

Nope. I’ll make 5.2 my rating.

a 5, The event placement disapointed me the most. to much food in the lvl and no hurt events at the needles, i know hurt events suck, but then why do you place needles there ?

Host this lvl ? i guess not, but thats your own choise.

“Super Mario Battle” is a pretty average battle level using the “SMB3: Grass Land” tileset by Taz (which is not too much above average as well).

It is 170*40 tiles large and has a simple, but at times confusing layout. The navigation isn’t very easy (a few dead ends and annoying warps) and, for example, Hurt events in multiplayer levels make no sense: they only hurt the server. Read your HowtoJCS :)

As for eyecandy, it is nearly non-existant. Or i missed the stuff you placed on other layers than number 4.

The background music is legendary already: “super mario land” by reflex/m0vement! 2 minutes and 18 seconds of pure protacker chiptune madness! Very oldskool. And fits great.

Nevertheless, my conclusion is that “Super Mario Battle” (what a dull level name btw) is horribly overrated here. Because i find it only slightly above the average, i give it the corresponding rating: 5.5 points. Download or not? Decide for yourself. Mario fans will probably like this.

Yup, i like this.

It’s just a nice quite little level using the Mario tileset of Taz-ar. (Heh the sign in it says that’s it by Taz ;P)
Okay, the eyecandy can better (Barfing use of layer 3), the weapon placement too (Much PUs on one place..), but what i really like is the gameplay, nice placed springs, Kewl ‘Really Mario idea’ with apearring blocks, and some kewl placed ammo.

It’s just a quite nicely level. Just download this.

Despite the eyecandy, hurt events, open areas and size, I do like this level. It kind of feels like Battle2, though quite a bit larger, and with a few too many powerups.
I can’t really find too much to say about this, other then that you should never use hurt events in multiplayer, but the level’s still interesting (though electro blaster and a carrot aren’t the best coin warp results)
