A little note to Aiko:
I based my prevous rating on the tilesets mirrow had built and how easy they were in usage.
In the level I made for smallcastle, with me out of the gun boxes came lizards (1 per box) as a little surprise for the unwary, but that seems to be not-working on other systems. Perhaps its because i use an edited INI file with my jcs.
Wow! This german-dutch co-production really kicks ass! By the way, let me mention this right at the beginning…“Mirrows Tileset Pack” is a very good example of how a tileset and a level designer can work together.
However, back to the topic: the pack consists of three brand new tileset by mirrow: “Jungle-Danger” (240 tiles), “new city” (about 480 tiles, there seem to be two versions included for some reason) and “smallcastle” (480 tiles). All three look very good but of course, i do have a favourite: the blue-brown look and oil-painting like background graphics of “smallcastle” impressed me, somehow. Basic structures like walls, spikes, vines, signs and the like can be found in all three tilesets. Not to forget all the animations, background objects etc.. Its just too much to describe it here.
Furthermore, each tileset has an example level made by our dutch friend BlackDeath aka Fear. It’s single player levels and they are jampacked with trigger crates, little puzzles, good looking eyecandy. Of course, it’s still “example levels” instead of real, long single player maps. The MCE’s in the “Small Castle” level were quite annoying for example.
The two background music tunes chosen by BlackDeath, “The Digital Dawn” by Sorath and “Dead lock” by Elwood are of outstanding tracked quality and fit good for those levels.
All in all, i can’t say much except THiS iS A MUST HAVE for every J2 fan. I really hope to see some nice levels using one of those tilesets in the future :-)
P.S.:
I admit, i am already biased ‘cause i kinda know my fellow german jazzer mirrow for some time but BlackDeath, i don’t know if it’s idea if you rate this pack, too :-)
Allright since I made the example levels I will base my rating solely on the tilesets and the readme file included.
The tilesets look good, easy to use, good eyecandy, good masking…
Mirrow outdid himself once again.
A Download recommendation from me…
This level is realy Great
Eyecandy is good
You can camp in the secret Thats Good Heh
BtW BlackDeath u rated this lvl two times just use Edit revieuw
eyecandy=8.0
playabilety=6.0
total=7.0[This review has been edited by Pre]
actually the tileset does influence the ratings, as it is way underused :) oh wait i already gave a rating
Hm. VERY weird layout, but cool. The weapons selection is good, and the music rox. I don’t like Haunted house too much, but i really like this level. Weird layers, kool ideas, great weapon placement, kool. And, Stunts, the tileset don’t make the rating. I don’t like the tileset, but I love the level. So, this is a DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION.
EDIT: I found this old review, and I corrected the spelling errors :)[This review has been edited by Fl@$h aka BlewMeUp]
I guess Newspaz told everything. It has no playfeeling and the eyecandy could be much better. Though this tileset is hard to use there are lot’s of examples like Fright Night CTF and some standard TSF lvls.
If u like to play underused tilesets u could give it a try. But if exactly the same lvl would be build with an overused tileset I guess it would be worse. The conclusion I get from this is that the tileset makes the lvl instead of the gameplay.
5.7 looks good enuf.
Okay
Good points:
*)Haunted Hause
*)Good music
*)Nice ideas
Bad points:
*)Playing around is very annoying
*)Eye candy is really bad
Sorry. But this really loses all the fun of playing for me. No recommendation from me.[This review has been edited by Newspaz]
The level indeed looks nice and features a lot of interesting layerwork, but the layerwork takes away visibility and movement possibilities, which makes it harder to do actual battle in this level and battle is what its made for…
The music is nice, but the name of this music always reminds me of the Bugworld screensaver (playable, if you find it then get it, it rocks).

a very nice lvl.
it features some original ideas ( i like the growing vines). the water background was kinda kool, as it doesnt slow down gameplay like normal water.
but the lvl is very confusing, with overheading layers which look exactly the same, and springs that were placed in small paths.
music was kinda nice..but a bit boring for a battle lvl in my opinion (dont take it too hard)
overall a 6.7, and a d/l reccomandation
Wow! mirrow’s “dinner” is a pretty cool battle level built in a very underused tileset (TSF’s “Haunted House”). I really like the layer work! It has all kinds of of original ideas on how to use the tileset (flying bats, a creeping plant, living chains etc.). The overall design (esspecially the weapon placement) is also very good (could be a bit more circular though). And the music fits perfectly.
Germany: 7.5 points :-) I can really RECOMMEND THiS LEVEL for DOWNLOAD.
This is a pretty good tileset/battle level (I didn’t like this as much as Aiko did..) with some useful stuff such as vines, ceiling blocks and a bunch of different JJ2 screenshots slapped together in the set. The little level that comes with it is decent, has a weird and kind of confusing BG which I didn’t like very much, but is at least semi-good I suppose. The music included is cool but the choice could have been better. Also the level is kind of linear.
Overall I can’t think of a reason not to d/l this.
“The Modern Past” is a very weird (read: confusing) level that uses a very great tileset with many usefull tiles and stuff.
The level has a confusing design, as i said, but a great weapons selection.
The tileset has great, funky animations so you can make a cool level with it.
It’s also very well masked.
So:
I think this is a great downlaod for all the battle and tileset fans in the comunnity.
BTW, the music is cool, but it isn’t included in the level. Re-upload or something, pleaze.
Well, i can’t say I like it as much as Aiko does, he’s right, I didnt hear music too, and the tileset is a little hotel like, but that won’t drop the point too much. What i think is less is that the tileset makes the level not fluently playable, there are too much sucker tubes and obstacles where you stop all the time. I played it on JJ times ago and that wasnt really fun. But overall it’s a good level with good layers and stuff.
Aha! Finally something from Germany after quite a while.
“The modern past” is a pack including a new tileset with over 300 tiles called psaiko…errr…“psycho” and an example battle level (“The modern past”).
The “psyco” tileset looks pretty nice and colorful, has some useful tiles (walls, vines, spikes, stars etc.) and a lot of funky animations (a TV for example). The masking is well made, too.
The included level is okay, maybe a tad too confusing (hard to navigate sometimes) and hotel-like.
Conclusion: because i’m a bit biased (he’s from my country, you know) and i’m in the mood, i’ll give out 7 points!
UNBEDINGT RUNTERLADEN! (DOWNLOAD NOW!)
By the way: it’s a pity that the kewlish music file doesn’t play in the level. Setting has to be: “cages.s3m” not just “cages”. Correct this bug and re-upload the level, mirrow.[This review has been edited by Aiko]
