EDIT²: Oh. I was kinda mislead by the name of the level. It’s a good idea to not name your level the same name of the tileset you used. :P
Anyways, onto the review.
First Glance: Seems like yet another boring SP level. But this isn’t your ordinary SP level, for better or worse.
Gameplay: While you get a good amount of ammo, the number of respawning bees and tuf turts, in combonation with the lack of light, and the foreground eyecandy, make it almost impossible to complete the level. Making levels difficult is good, making them darn near impossible isn’t. 5/10.
Eyecandy/atmosphere: Eyecandy is presentable for this tileset. Almost no tilebugs, but nothing too original or exicting. The music selected is overused and barely fits with the level. 6/10.
Tileset use: This tileset is pretty easy to use, and so I can’t award any real points here. Nothing really original done here. 6/10.
Tilt: This isn’t really a level i’d play if I were board. It’s just too annoying. 4/10.
(5 + 6 + 6 + 4) ÷ 4 = 5.25 ~= 5.3. No download reccomendation.
Advice: Remove the foreground eyecandy, use respawning bees (or similar annoying enemies) less often, and try to be more original.
I have to say, it’s kinda sad when the fact that the download is zipped with Winzip is actually a FEATURE.
Jarno Vos actually makes sense here. Posting five levels all at once and thus spamming the download section is not good. Post them all in one zip file.
Edit: The_Wrath, if someone wanted to download all of your levels, you could just put them all in one download. It’d be easier to search for, you wouldn’t have to open four tabs, and you could review them all at once. Not only that, but people like level packs more than singles because there’s more content.
8 hours isn’t really a lot to spend on a level. Most good levels are done in the course of a week or so. Some levels in more advanced 3D games take up to a year to make by one person!
Just remember, the amount of time you spend actually working on your level, tinkering with it and changing layouts to make it fit better, will increase the level quality and playability by a lot. If you can’t think of anything else to add, host a beta test server and ask for ideas. Unless you get a server full of idiots that say “rotfl add ten million tube events lolzord” or something like that, you’re bound to be able to get new ideas. That brings up one more point; be able to take criticism. Most people won’t flame you, but if they say stuff like “the way you did the eyecandy was pretty awful,” don’t feel bad about it. Everyone can improve, and you’re just starting out anyway.
If you like it so much, why did you give it a low rating?

(Please stop messing with the downloads section. ~Violet)
This is the world’s worst level, next to Voldard’s Treasure Jungel. For that, you get a 10. GG, man. GG.

Ok, I played halfway, then I put down my controller and decided the level sucked.
The enemy placement wasn’t very hard. More bees/tuf turfs in narrow areas would’ve made the game harder in that department.
The “puzzle” part of the game, if you can call it that, is simply jumping around and getting to crates. Smash the crates, scour the level for any changes, repeat. Not fun.
Item placement tries to make the level hard but fails.
In summary, the only thing that made the level “hard” was the puzzles. I put the hard in quotation marks because the level wasn’t fun at all. While I enjoy games that give a challenge (see Eternal Daughter, Tyrian, Kirby’s Dream Land 3), this level wasn’t very enjoyable. Hard levels are fun. Fustrating ones are not.
I give you a 6, + .5 for effort, -1.5 for passwording the level without releasing the password. Unless you want to keep a compendum of every JJ2 level that ever existed, skip this.
x1337 or whatever: A large cut from a good rating would give the author more incentive to not password his next level. Also, you’re lucky I gave you a .5 for effort, I would’ve left you with a 4.5 but I decided that wouldn’t be very nice.
Danyjel’s articles bring a smile to my face. They’re so wonderfully messed up. No offense or anything, just… hehe…
Ok, now I feel like i’m obligated to do a review. Here goes.
The song starts off with the normal Technoir beginning. At 0:05, the “ARE YOU READY?!” sample from the Tubelectric JJ2 remix plays. It’s kinda dissapointing because it just blurts out, there’s no fade. After that sample, the music just kinda jumps in. No fade or intro, it just begins. At 0:52, the part that makes the Technoir theme my favorite, the “j-j-jackrabbit” sample plays. At first I was psyched to hear it, then after listening again it sounded too low quality. Perhaps Lark could’ve resampled it using his own voice and applying a few effects. However, it’ll have to do since most Technoir remixes i’ve heard (read: one) don’t have the “j-j-jackrabbit” sample in it.
All in all, it’s a good looping remix, just a bit too short in my opinion. 6 out of 10 +.5 because I feel Danyjel underrated a bit. This remix has the honor of staying in my Winamp playlist (\o/). Download recommendation if you liked the original but don’t like it too much as to be attached to the orignal and not accept any devations from the ordinary. Or something. Use in your Technoir level or any level using a tileset with a tech or abstract theme. Sprinkle some on your pizza!
Hahahahahaha
The music is awesome
I’d give you a 10 for the use of it but OI cant because imrt tirexcd
DL recommendation everybodys
Why didn’t you convert it into 1.23? You know that you could’ve easily done so, with the tools we have out now.
Also, why did Violet remove my rating while this clown keeps his 10.0 rating?
Onto the the new review.
Please don’t zip your files so that it unzips into a seperate folder. It’s annoying. -1 for that.
Anyways, this tileset is basically a bunch of blocks. The drawing style reminds me of Reactor Core, and this tileset has just as much eyecandy. It has some rarely-seen tiles, too, like letters (rarely seen outside of tests and hotels), smiley faces, a “boss” sign, a “kaja” sign (probably dutch for exit or something), other signs, key and lock tiles (with color-matching blocks), stomping Jazz (one of which fits right into a single tile, cool-o), and much much more. If you’re looking for a test tileset, this one should work for you. 8 -1 = 7 out of 10. Download recommendation.
I’m not in the mood to make a long review, so i’m just going to pile everything up in one paragraph.
This level is a remake of the original Battle2 level. However, there’s this one little tumor-esque thing at the lower left part of the level that is not found in the original level. Proper layout takes a back seat to eyecandy, which is seen in the form of mask errors. The eyecandy isn’t all that good either, in my opinion. Just some floating things in the background. You get a 6.5 from me. Download this if you really like battle2, but otherwise, you can skip this one.
I’m just rating this a ten so Wiolet will come and edit it. Mmmkay?
(Unsupported rating removal edit. This review sucks. ~Cooba)
Perhaps nobody reviewed this because it’s so damn huge.
Edit: Okay, played it through, here’s the review.
Flow: Flow is okay. Nothing really that bad, except for the warp on the lower left that wasn’t explained. I like the water. 3.5 of 5.
Eyecandy: The level doesn’t really look right unless you play in 8 bit mode, and even then, it looks weird because you can’t swim in lava, unless Jazz and Spaz both have extremophilic fur that can withstand the heat of lava. Also, the gems spin too fast. Everything else is okay. 4 of 5.
Gameplay: It’s okay, though I didn’t understand the toaster ammo underwater (toaster ammo doesn’t work underwater, and for a good reason, too). It may go with the idea well, but alone it doesn’t make sense. Otherwise, the gameplay is pretty nice. 4.5 of 5.
Tilt: I didn’t like the oversized music file that increased the zip file size. That makes me sad. -1 for that.
3.5 + 4 + 4.5 = 12 / 3 = 4 x 2 = 8 – 1 = 7. Download recommendation if you’re into duels, otherwise you can just download it if it’s ever in a server.
I played this in a server with Cooba, and I have to say, impressive.
Flow:
Awesome flow. Everything goes together nicely. I’d like to point out one thing: Jazz need not use the coptor to reach the seeker forest, as was said before. 5 of 5.
Eyecandy:
Pretty good. The use of 1ups behind the gems really being them out. The bubbler events are really well done. The only complaint I have is the background eyecandy. It looks like you just mirrored the cave tiles over and over again. 4 of 5.
Gameplay:
Pretty well done. There’s a good amount of weapons scattered about, with one full NRG in the middle. What’s really neat is the use of water. I find that lurking in the water shooting seekers out of the water can get me a lot of kills. 4.5 of 5.
5 + 4 + 4.5 = 13.5 / 3 = 4.5 * 2 = 9.
Download recommendation.
I meant to place a way to smash the crate at the very beginning, but I forgot how. bleh.
If people can make such short reviews and get away with it, so can I.
The flow is subpar. It’s very easy to get stuck, there’s too much ammo, the powerups you chose don’t do anything, and there are hurt events. Never use hurt events in a battle, or else you’ll get an access violation if you get killed by one. The eyecandy isn’t all that great, the tiles look like you just threw them together without caring, and there’s barely any background.
A 2 from me for effort and creativity. I feel like 2 is too much. So i’ll give you a 1.5.
Can’t play the level. However, i’ll give you a few tips:
1. NEVER password your levels. It really makes it annoying for reviewers.
2. If you’re using an ‘offical’ tileset, don’t include it. It just inflates file space.
3. From the looks of it, it sounds like you didn’t make the airboards spawn. Airboard battles are bad enough, but non-spawning airboard battles? puke
4. “Have You Played This In Battle Mode Cooba???”
Just as a side note, this isn’t the first Christmas level. Black Ninja released Y-Mas before I did. In fact, Black Ninja, in a way, inspired me to make this level. FireSword said that Y-Mas would be the only Christmas battle. I wanted to prove him wrong and possibly outdo an experienced level maker while I was at it. Maybe I should have put all that in the manual. :P
I’m sorry about the shadows, but I had to place them like that, for anything else would have looked worse. I try to make the levels looks as pleasing to the eye as possible, by trying to offer semi-realism. So if something doesn’t look right with the tileset, Blame Cliffy B. :P
Ahh. Really fun level. Aeiuo had this up for some time, and I got to beta test.
Eyecandies:
Very well done. Smooth, not too annoying, and goes well. 8 of 10.
Music Selection:
Goes good. 7.5 of 10.
Gameplay:
Now here is where the fun begins. Aeiuo put in a lot of neat gimmicks, like a gem that runs away from you. Also, he used food. Not that many CTF levels use food. The level also has practical things, like great weapons selection. 8 of 10.
Hype:
Hype is basically the rating of the level prior to me rating i, which is 6.7 of 10.
Tilt:
Aeiuo is awesome, and this level only further proves that. 9 of 10.
Overall:
This is a level i’d love to play on any server.
8 + 7.5 + 8 + 6.7 + 9 = 39.2 / 5 = 7.84 = 7.8.
Download Recommendation.
