Technically, high for usability. You can avoid the lego set usability, as some tiles look quite ‘organic’.

The more stylistic tile-sets tend to be the least usable (inferno as an example).

I don’t give jack shit if you don’t read this review, or if you disagree with my rating. I’m writing this out of the well deserved respect for blur and the work he has done. Thanks.

desolate (adj./verb)

1. barren or laid waste; devastated: a treeless, desolate landscape.
5. dreary; dismal; gloomy: desolate prospects.
8. to make disconsolate.
9. to forsake or abandon.

“desolate”, being a word of many meanings, fits perfectly to this eclectic tileset, which is chock full of many unique and creative ways to design an outstanding level with amazing eyecandy contraptions.

BlurredD’s Desolation depicts an once natural, now devastated landscape. That theme has been hinted by blur himself a long time ago, though in different context: “a happy grassy meadow in the middle of a city in ruins with molten lava beneath the surface.” [1].
A majority of the used graphics comes from long-since abandoned and forgotten (desolated) tilesets, and blur kindly listed all his resources.

Everything in this tileset looks completely over the top. It’s obvious that blur had to alter most of the tiles so that they could go together, which, from my point of view, is a TON of effort. BlurredD successfully (though I dunno if intentionally) managed to merge the two different styles of tilesets: cartoony and texturey. Usually they don’t quite match, but here they do and it looks really sweet.

I’ve been creating a level with this tileset for a little while now, and I have to admit that it’s more than a pleasure to work with. The way the tiles are ordered should be some kind of a standard, I haven’t seen tiles being so smoothly organised in eons. Everything has its logical place in this tileset, and there’s no case of “tile scattering”, present in many other tilesets (including the other BlurredD sets, like Odyssey).

Summary
  • Stunning graphical quality
  • Overwhelming variety of possible themes
  • No problems with usability whatsoever
  • N/A

Overall
One of the greatest tilesets I’ve ever seen released, up there with Egypt. This just screams “perfect” at the top of its lungs. Download this and use immediately… you won’t be desolated.

Actually I had seen flashes of a level using this tileset once in BlurredD’s own server, from which I can’t really remember much, but the background. As you may expect, the tileset is yet again high quality.

I was impressed by the overall usefulness of this tileset. It comes with 3 different palettes, as the author’s tilesets often do, and that way you can create several different atmospheres for your level. You can really maximize your creativity and imagination with this tileset, because of different background-possibilities, as well 3 “main”-sprite solids. The tileset also offers tons for sprite-eyecandy, and hardly no tile looks awful at all.

What I found fascinating also, were the animated tiles here, although they aren’t too many(one being Mirrow’s ‘Fire’.) You might want to use the Pulse-animated lights for an Industrial level, which do their work well. The ‘burning sea’ probably doesn’t animate in a realistic way, but is acceptable by me.

And then something I have for long awaited for someone to make, are the digital letters and numbers here. It doesn’t only boost the industriality here, but now you have another tileset to use in a storylined single-player, thus making it more than useful. All in all, there shouldn’t be any problem to find correct tiles for any situation.

Only what I found a bit lacking, was the soil that couldn’t be blended perfectly along the other solids. Since now it has to be just done roughly. Also there could be other tiles for hurt-events than just the fire(which isn’t even masked.)

Having seen the example-levels, I can’t really say which pallette is my favourite. All 3, even the ‘night’-set, looked wonderful.

I recommend this tileset for everyone. It might as well be the tileset of the year. However, I’d appreciate a tileset with way different theme from BlurredD next time. Having started to use a textbox, I decided to give this set 9.1, since I find it closer to this one’s worth than 9.0 or 9.2.

EDIT: Alright, so after further thoughts, I noticed this tileset didn’t have that much flaws or things to improve. In fact the perfection of the author’s work is to be seen on the tiles themselves. So a 9.4 would be fitting for the superiority.

P.S. Unfortunately I don’t have any screenshots to show you this time.

ok, quick review.

well first off, i’m not gonna feed you a bunch of crap about how these levels have GREAT EYECANDY and AMAZING GAMEPLAY and INSANE AMMO PLACEMENT
because i’m sure none of you are going to read this review and see that the levels have that and be like WOW! i should download this. i’ve come to realize it just doesn’t work that way.

as an introduction, here we have several quite impressive levels by blurredd. while very impressive, i was also somewhat disappointed with a few of the levels, it really wasn’t what i expected. the levels are good and all, just a few of them kinda bothered me, like “action basement,” i just couldn’t really bring myself to enjoy that level. same with “air base vii” and “the genesis reactor core.”

i did really love a few of the levels though, especially “chemical lake,” “turbo-shock star cruiser ctf,” and “pathetically easy ctf.” there’s always something original about blurredd’s levels and these are no exception. even the levels i didn’t really like had something new and creative in them, like the pit that you fall into in “action basement,” and the way you have to shoot down the carrot in “the genesis reactor core.”

i’m not going to carry on and bore you, because nobody actually reads long reviews. and nobody likes short ones. so a medium one should work for this, right?

this is the first upload i’ve downloaded in a long time besides some promising looking music, and some levels that have used my tilesets (that end up being pathetic). and i don’t regret downloading this, it’s the first thing that’s actually been worth taking a look at that’s been uploaded in a long time.

i’d give this a big download reccomendation, this is really worth downloading, especially because you don’t really see good uploads much anymore. these are truly some solid, creative levels.

I’m still not crashing after typing anything while using Carrotade, so for the moment I can’t make any fixes. And the last access violation mentioned in this thread isn’t of any immediate help. So it would really help me if anyone with the problem (such as Pisarz, masterrokusho, and Critz) would give me a lot more details of what happened before the crash, including what programs other than JJ2 and Carrotade were running, what operating system you are using, what version of JJ2 you are using, when you loaded Carrotade (such as on the menu screen or after the server started), and if the crash ALWAYS happens right after you type something.

I suggest making your reply in the JCF thread I just mentioned instead of here to ensure I read it as soon as possible, and it’ll make it easier for me to give a response.

Previous comments:

Thanks for the comments. I updated the description so that it can be a little more useful (I have a bad tendency to be vague with certain things). I would guess that if you put the dll and exe in your JJ2 folder and you have 1.23 or TSF and it still doesn’t work, it’s because your JJ2 is using some patch (like the “1.25” patch UNKNOWNFILE made) which is interfering with Carrotade. At the moment I have no plans to support older patches, but support for the patch Grytolle is working on is a different story. If Carrotade doesn’t work for some other reason, PM me here or on MSN and I’ll see what I can do.

The rest of what I have to say addresses Overlord’s comments:

  1. Yeah, Neobeo did some of the best work this game has ever seen, to say the least.
  2. If what you said is true that PC 4.1 shouldn’t interfere with Carrotade, then I find that particularly good news (I admit I still use PC 4.0 for certain functions).
  3. I should probably change this behavior but I’m not in any particular rush. UPDATE: Apparently NeoAC has the same issue, so it’s probably not caused by something I added later on in development. I have an idea for how to fix it, but it seems all that is needed for the program to work (to some degree) is the dll in the same directory as a JJ2 exe.
  4. Same issue as above. I originally made it work this way as an easy fix (curse my poor programming habits).
  5. What level was that in? If you made the level, have you seen the Pit Level example yet? It has a few guidelines within text signs not mentioned in the readme. I would highly advise making levels where the lowest platform next to a pit is at least 8 tiles high. Sucker tubes can help. I’m still working on the functionality though.
  6. Right now it’s just based off the names gip scripts use for joining servers. I would probably have to rewrite a few things to get your method to work (which would mean ditching the overcomplicated system I used where I modified existing hooks), so I’m not too eager to make the change. If I run into a lot of problems with the method I’m currently using, I’ll definitely have to try your method.
  7. I’m not sure what I was thinking when I came up with that name, but I thought it had a nice ring to it.
  8. That might be out of my scope at the moment, but I’ll see what I can do.

Edit: Hitch, you managed to read Overlord’s comments, but what about mine? I specifically mentioned the issue of pits in this post, and in addition to that, I specifically addressed the issue in the readme AND in a text string in the Pit Level example. As with the other “bug” (also mentioned in my comments), it’ll be fixed soon. But anyway, thanks for the review, I appreciate it.

I found a bug in new anti-jazz system.

If you have TNT from earlier lvls, you can easily enter as Jazz/Lori.

Just wallclimb at right edge of room, so you won`t teleport to waiting room, plant a TNT without moving, then rapidly press left and right to teleport to waiting room as Jazz/Lori…

The program is awesome. But i can`t use it on TSF. I can start server normally, but when someone tries to pick up a flag, Access Violation error appears, and Jazz2 automatically closes. Someone know how to launch Carrotade properly on TSF?

Carrotade v1.0

First of all I have to say this OWNS! Carrotade is a great program which is a combination of Forest, NeoAc, and Project controller. If you don’t know what these programs are, then look them up.

Features

Now Carrtoade has many different features. These are some of the most common that I
Use and some that I don’t use as much.

  • Instagib
  • Kicking/banning player (Pretty useless. You can do this feature without Carrotade)
  • Cycling games
  • Starts/stops games
  • Log players stats
  • Shuffle teams (Ctf)
  • Swap (Change a certain player’s team)
  • Cycle Level filename (Cycles the level if it exists)
  • Next level filename (When you cycle (/c) It goes to this level if it exists)
  • Shuffle level (When cycling, it is shuffled)
  • Team battle (Only capable when hosted in Ctf)
  • Roast tag (Only capable in Battle)
  • Save settings (well of course this is important)
  • Capture (Whether you can capture or not. Useful in duels)
  • Cycle
  • Auto cycle
  • Off (Turns of custom mode. Custom mode= Roast tag/Team battle)
  • Fix seek holes
  • Laser protection
  • Ip logging (This is indeed very useful)
  • Weapon respawn (Yay, this program does have respawn on it)
  • TSF compatible (Even though I don’t play tsf often, It’s good for other people who do)

Pit Levels

Pit Levels are pretty cool. A pit level was a great Idea. When you host a pit level they work well when you host them in Roast tag (/rt)

Roast Tag

This is a very unique idea. Like blur said in the “read me”, it’s kind of like Play tag. When I think of Playing Roast tag, I think of playing king of the hill. Blur calls it the “Eva’s Ring”. The instructions on how to play it are in the read me so I don’t need to explain any of that crap

BUGS!

1 – One of the bugs in Carrotade is it wont start when you don’t have JJ2 running. When you host a server when you already have the program running it wont work, so you have to open JJ2, host a server, then run the program Carrotade.

2 – Another bug is in Pitfall, I think overlord already explained this but you instantly die when you hit the pit, actually, you don’t hit the pit and still die. Anyone could double jump out very easily with spaz but it isn’t a HUGE bug.

Summary of Carrotade

To wrap this all up, I have to say this program is very useful. If you people are looking for a program to play evil, well, this isn’t for you. No, it does not have renaming the players on it, but who cares, all that matters is that this program kicks (-). Download recommendation, of course. If you don’t download this, it’s either you don’t have common sense, or you don’t have the ability to host. Great work blur, asome program. Keep up the good work.
