Tileset conversions, or whatever we’re calling these things, are a tricky field to jump into, and you’re being gutsy, but this needs more work. The best recommendation I can give you is to download some successful examples of the practice — Castle 2, Psych 3, Carrotus Fix, for instance — The main thing this tileset has to offer is a different tile order, but as sonicnathan1 says, Castle’s probably not the biggest candidate for that. It makes sense to overhaul the tile order in the less used sets — Inferno, Colon, Psych, etc. — part of the reason that they’re not used so much is that people find them confusing. Castle, though, is mostly simple, and the few improvements you may end up making are offset by the learning curve someone would have to take on to figure out the rest of the set.

Beyond that, just at a first glance, your reordering isn’t actually all that good. The community is more or less agreed on the order Disguise proposes at DTR. I don’t think there’s a fixed place for animations yet, but other than that the above link is pretty solid. You’re pretty close to that, but you’ve got event tiles all over the place, which is a no-no, and there are definitely times where you fail to break tiles into sections and have the basics come before the eyecandy. Bringing the big sections of blocks that Nick added late in the game up to join the rest of the walls makes sense, but you’re not done by any means, and the tile order just doesn’t look pretty right now.

The other main point of tileset conversions is what you add to the set, why someone should download and use it over the original in the first place, and you’re really lacking here. I’m slightly hesitant about your decision to kill the slides but I imagine most people wouldn’t really care. More importantly, you add next to nothing. You expand the background stuff so it can have borders, but your colors are off, and the textured background is so traditionally colored it’s obvious you didn’t think about it for ten seconds, although you did make it work, so kudos. If you’re going to convert a tileset that JJ2 already has, you need a vision, you need to have an image of what that tileset means to you which you’re then trying to give to us to use in our levels. Right now your vision is that Castle probably has a sky outside, and that’s not good enough.

Again, look at other conversions, see that they add stuff, and maybe even go past that. Right now, this set is all well-intentioned, and you begin at all the right things, but you stop too soon for this to be useful. Study Disguise’s order, study how it’s implemented in other sets, study how tilesets can look “pretty” in JCS, and think long and hard about what tiles you want available for us before you upload. Castle is a small set, and there’s a lot of room to add stuff. I’ve never seen anyone acknowledge, for example, that the tileset as it stands is actually supposed to represent the Carrotus Castle Dungeons, not the stuff up on top. What if you looked at some JJ3 screenshots and incorporated more of that? There’s a world of possibilities out there when you’re messing with other people’s stuff.

I don’t really see the point of this. I always though that castle was an easy tileset to use and I think this just makes it harder. I’m not going to give a rating, but I think this is a harder tileset to use the the original castle.

When reviewing a tileset such as this you need to remember to review only the effort in joining the tilesets and not the art that is drawn by someone else.

Joining two tilesets is more about recoloring and editing existing tiles. Running out of colors isn’t an excuse for a job not done, as you have over two hundred colors available and the possibility to edit current tiles to fit the new color schemes is there.

This seems more like the author ran the sets through a color reduction program and splattered them into whatever available space a pre-made palette.

Although the idea of Carrotus joined with Castle in one tileset is interesting, the choices of tiles still need to be well thought and the colors well handled.

I apologize, but download is not recommended.

It has to be said that this version is much much better in terms of content, and it is a good thing that you got rid of those pointless error messages and tubelectric tiles. However, I don’t get why the background has trees and stuff when this is supposedly a windows themed tileset. You also could have gone one further and made a keyboard too among other things you could have added. I love the idea, but as a general tileset, I still think that it needs some work.

I tried that djazz, but is STAYS ugly!

AND the neon colors of pinball events is because of the necessary colors of the carrotus pole.

Things that could have been better:
  • Better background (still landscape)
  • Fix the bad-masked icon tiles and other masking

WOW! Thsi is a really great JJ2 tileset conversion! Sry for the carrots, but’s still cool =D

Rate: 9 of 10 due to the pinball events & carrots, and try to change the color of the pinball events instead of neon-green
Download: Absolutley ;)

To fix the 500 bump and carrot bump, put those colors in tileset, took a long time and many tries before I figured this out =)

Well not bad, but not perfect.

What this is: This is basically the castle and carrotus tileset put in a blender and compiled. While I do agree that this is a good idea, some things could have been changed.

Color
For the most part, the color looks good. Castle looks the same and carrotus looks the same. The only problem is with the carrots, they look bad. The textured background looks good and looks corrected. Overall, good colors.
8/10

Pallet Events
This is a big hitter. Almost non of them work. even the carrotus pole doesn’t work. The only thing that works well is the Textured background and water. Just the fact the carrotus pole doesn’t work really hurts this.
2/10

Ease of Use
Well this is a quite a bit harder to use then the other tilesets. You kinda need to know them both to use them effectively. Even so, it’s still easy to use.
7/10

Usability
This tileset is very usable. You can make quite a couple of combinations. That being said, it’s still only castle and carrotus, meaning you’re limited to those two themes. Even so, there’s still quite a bit of re-usability here.
7/10

Added stuff
Almost nothing. All that really has been added are the connection tiles. There could have a lot more that could have been added.
2/10

Mask
Almost non of the masking bugs have been fixed. that being said, the masking still works most of the time. I would have liked the masking fixed.
6/10

Final Score:31/60
Score:5.5
Rank C
DR? Well this is a hard one. This is a good tileset, but I think a lot more could have been done (Mask fix, more tiles)other then just pasting the two tilesets together. Still, if you want something like this, go ahead and download as it does work, just don’t expect anything spectacular.

Edit:I remove my rating since there was another update.

Quitte a funny little battle to play with 3 – 5 people in game. That it’s 1.24 isn’t a problem any more since we have the 1.24>1.23 convertor :D

+ Maskings where fine
+ Triggers working correct
+ Nice layout

Improvements…
! Little more eyecandy but don’t let it hurt the gameplay
! Make the warp maybe more easy to find
! You dit use almost all kind of weapons, I don’t see the use of pepper spray and ice gun here… but thats personal taste :)
! Make more use of the layers to make a even more nice game!

Download recommendation?
hmm… yes why not? I gonna host this some time i gues.

Keep improving! ;)

This is a nice idea but it is not executed very well.

EYECANDY

Most of the eyecandy in the original Battle1,2 and 3 levels is still present. There is a new background with the castle pillars and the Tubelectric “EPIC” speakers. It does look good but not there isn’t really much originality in the way of eyecandy. Try adding more of your own instead of just using the original.

5/10

GAMEPLAY

You start off the level in a room where you can choose which Battle level you want to play in. But this is where the problems begin. For starters, if you were playing a Duel you would have a hard time finding the opponent because they might be in one of the other levels and the combined size of all the levels is HUGE!
This would be OK if you had say 6 or more players.

4/10

WEAPONS & ITEM PLACEMENT

All of the original weapons and items from the original Battle levels are still present. Seeker PU is still too campy. Nothing has really changed with the weapon and item placement.
The campy Water Shield is still present.
There are 2 Seeker PUs since they are still in both Battle1 & 3 which is too much because you can gain Seeker ammo too easily.
You should have tried to change the placement of weapons and not make them too campy.

3/10

TOTAL SCORE: 12/30
OVERALL MARK = 12 / 3 = 4.0

DOWNLOAD?

While the idea and concept of this level is good it is just not executed very well. Also, since the level is TSF only, not everyone can play it.
So, no download recommendation. :(
