Batalla Castillo (which I find a way cooler name than “Castle Battle”, but perhaps that’s because I just like the Spanish language) is a battle level using the Castle 1 tileset which is, contrary to what the author claims, fairly small.

It is evident that Rodrigo does not have much experience in level creating. This is not bad – my first levels weren’t much better – but well, it shows. The level is cluttered with red springs in every direction, which makes navigating the level quite a challenge. There are a few other things that appear in virtually every novice level: the giant supply of powerups, grouped together in one place; the large cloud of fairly useless (freezer) ammo; an underwater area that goes nowhere; warps to other parts of the level; and obviously the airboard. All those are quite nice when used adequately, however when they are all in the same level it doesn’t really work.

The level has no “flow”, paths often end in destruct scenery or dead ends, so a battle game in this level won’t be much fun. Good battle levels allow you to keep moving continuously, without bumping into walls or obstacles every so often. The ammo should be placed sparingly, in groups of maybe 5 pickups. Power-ups have to be even harder to get, and certainly not all in the same place. Air boards shouldn’t be used when a level is as small as this one; you need large, open areas for them, without springs at the sides that bump you around. Trigger scenery in multiplayer does not really work well in this game mode, and is even annoying when you are virtually stuck somewhere as long as you haven’t broken the relevant trigger crate. Underwater areas slow you down considerably, and should be avoided unless well-designed – a simple square filled with freezer ammo does not invite the player to place himself in a vulnerable position by submerging himself. Especially not when there’s a chance he will miss the water level event and end up floating in the void at the bottom of the level ;)

The eyecandy isn’t outstanding, but does the job. There are no obvious tile bugs, but apart from that it’s pretty basic. You should try to make the level look interesting, by making platforms and ceilings less flat, by using the brown stones as background scenery, et cetera. Try to make it look alive, like a real castle. Or don’t make it look like a castla at all. Be original; original eyecandy is something that is usually greatly rewarded when done rightly.

All in all this is not very bad for a first level, but it is a first level, and suffers from many common novice mistakes. I can not recommend downloading or playing this level, but keep on trying, Rodrigo, and eventually you’ll get better :)

This patch indeed is handy, but there should be on/off switch. I kinda like some musics when you die, they sound odd, but it fits there… But anyways, great patch!

Some of these tilesets are actually quite good. The best one is your Exoticus. I am thinking about using that tileset for a future level of mine.

Green Paradise is a medium/large Battle level using my Jungle Paradise Tileset conversion. TripleJ seems to like using my conversions which no one else used or liked. Now for the review:

This level has the same, overused EC as in most Jungle levels. There are a lot of EC things in this set, and TripleJ has only used a few things. The background is kind of original though, but thats only because of the additions in this conversion :|. I don’t like the Purple fade colour for the Textured Backgound much, use a light colour next time. There are some more Diamond trees at the bottom of the level on layers 1 and 2, and they move way too fast, and they kind of clutter up the place. There are loads of the same leaf clusters (reminds me of the bushes from Diam B levels) placed on layer 3 all over the level. They seem to be randomly placed without any thought. Next time use a larger vareity of EC. But I must say, it still looks nice while playing it.

The Gameplay is quite a dissapointment :(. The flow was rather sloppy. There a lot of places that need one way events, like all that wooden stuff. This is one of the main causes of the bad flow, since I go under a wooden platform with a dead end, I try to jump out but there’s No One Way event so I have to just turn around, which spoils the flow by a lot. a lot of springs through you into celings and walls, and there are some more dead ends like in 82,24. There should be a one way event on the ground above it, which would make the flow much better. This level requires a lot of Jumping to get around.

The ammo placement was average too. A lot of ammo is the simple, boring 4 ammo squares. Make some more intressting shapes next time. Also don’t use Ice in battle, it is just pointless. For a level this size there should be more ammo. Another problem this level has is there is only 1 carrot in the whole level. There should be more carrots in a level this size, or that carrot could be replaced by a full energy carrot. There is also a coin warp that costs 20 coins which gives you an RF PU. There aren’t very many coins in this level, so it takes a long time to get it.

I think the EC is a bit repetitive but it still manages to look nice, but the Gameplay and Placement could use a lot of improvements. One important thing through is that this level is a lot better than your last one. If you follow the advice in this review and spend a bit more time, you’ll make great levels. I’m going to rate this 7.1.

Download: Maybe.
Host: Perhaps once.

Royal Rainforest

First impressions of this level was holly cow, this level has more backround
layer 5 than 4…then I decided to review it sense he said “This is probley the best level ive made yet”. Well, I guess where gonna find out.

Gameplay:

Gameplay was maybe not the best but it was good. The game had a good flow to it and the springs where placed in the right spots. No bugs from the springs like Hitting the Ceiling of the level or something. The game actully has a point to it. At the top you can get to the ctf bases alot quicker and have the Full NRG carrot but there are no weapons so it makes you not take that route all the time.
8/10

Eyecandy:

First impressions….WoW! When I first looked at this level and saw that it was using the most overused tilesets and I was kinda pissed. But Pj7 Used the tileset verywell. Everylayer except layer 2 was used. Layers 6 and 7 like like the layout of. The tiles where used nicley and everyting fits perfect. Remember how everylevel can always improve with eyecandy, well, as I can see this level has to be one of the levels with the most eyecandy. Tons of it. All I have to say is, great job on the eyecandy.
9.7/10

Weapon/Carrot placement:

Ill start of with the carrot placement. I think there is only one carrot and it is enough. It is placed ver evenly and it;s easy to get to. now on the other hand..The weapon placement wasnt as good. Now im not saying that it was bad, im just saying that the weapons lack in some areas. The Powerup’s are placed evenly but I rely dont like where you put the seek Pu. Matters not but it does matter. Overall its an okay job.
8/10

Overall:

Well, the gameplay is even, the eyecandy is unspeakable, and the weapon placemtn could have some improvement on. I rely dont think Weaponplacemtn can get a 10. Like the highest score I give weapon placement is like an 8.5 but thats not the point. Its a good level, tileset used very well. Pj7….Keep it up;)

Score:

8/10+9.7/10+8/10=8.5666…7= 8.7

I actually found this level quite entertaining. Some of the very first puzzles took a little time from me in fact, though they could have the purpose to be solved out quickly. But after them solving the rest was actually easier, because the later puzzles seemed to be recycling the earlier used concepts a bit.

The level actually contains a twilight maze, but it’s fine as long as it isn’t really a lot larger or confusing as here. Because many people find such large mazes rather annoying than interesting. There aren’t after all a lot of single-player puzzle levels made for JJ2, so this goes to the quite top in them. I think this could at least challenge the Godaikoku-pack.

The author nicely abused the bugs,(or let’s say detailed features) of JJ2 for the puzzles in here. So, that the player had to actually have some JJ2-knowledge along with just general cleverity and smartness in these puzzles.

The way this level happened to look like in zoomed-out layer-window of JCS even amazed me. I think the boss-part could have been put a little more effort even, to make it as challenging as any puzzle in this level.

I’m not actually sure about what would I rate this one, but need to say it really is educating. I don’t promise that you’re going to really “enjoy” every part here, like you’re not probably even supposed to, in puzzles. I just suggest people download this and give it a try. Thanks for this level, Neo.

Well, not really like jazz2! was ilke a different world! maybe not much eyecandy but seems like an old game! just not like jazz2!
Music choice was excellent! there wouldn’t be a better choice for a puzzle level.
There were very interesting and original ideas. It takes some time to figure it out! (I don’t want to tell and ruin everything) It was rally hard to solve the first puzzles, (i didn’t know the way to use bouncer ammo like that!) the rest was easier.
Still i wonder how does the trigger zones work with the key tiles! You put the trigger scenery event in another place, but the tile that you put the trigger zone event is the key! you can pick it up although it’s not a trigger scenery event! So, it was just amazing!

GAMEPLAY

Nice clues, u must be really smart to make those. They are to understand for everyone but don’t tell the exact point.
The puzzels were not the same whole the time. Sometimes you had to morph all the time and sometimes you had to try to shoot a checkpoint and then die.

EYECANDY

No bugs, not really a fantastic eyecandy, but its a puzzle level, they don’t have to be that beautiful.
Also nice to see your keys at the foreground :P!

I think no more should be rated at a puzzle level so thats it :P

Gameplay: 9
Eyecandy: 8

Final Grade: 8,5!

This is a great level but I’m really confused with some of the puzzles. I have no idea what to do after I get the Bouncer PU at pos 43,158.

Thanks WR! I now see what the 1UPs are for. I have finished the level now, so here’s the review:

NEOBEO’S FIRETRUCK

EYECANDY

Not the best eyecandy I have seen but I still like it. Backgrounds look good. No eyecandy bugs anywhere! It may not look impressive but I don’t think it really matters for a puzzle level.

8 OUT OF 10

GAMEPLAY

Now this was probably the most interesting gameplay I have ever come across in a JJ2 level. There are various puzzles to solve. The main objective was to complete all the puzzles and get to the end boss. I think the boss could have been made more challenging though, the arena wasn’t really that big. It took me about 5 days to figure out what to do in this level. Not only do you have to find keys and switches, but you have to equip yourself with some knowledge of the bugs in JJ2. I won’t mention them here as it may spoil it for someone playing this level. Gameplay gets 9 because the boss arena was a bit easy. Somehow the Keys disappear even though the “Trigger Zone” event is on the Key but the “Trig Scen” ISN’T! How is that possible?

9 OUT OF 10

ENEMIES/OBSTACLES

There was no enemies except the boss at the end. There are lots of obstacles that you have to get through by finding keys and switches. There were no bugs with any of the obstacles.

10 OUT OF 10

PICKUPS

There was not many to be found here but since there was no enemies and this was a puzzle level, only the items that were needed were to be found. There are some PUs and lots of 1UPs, you’ll figure out what they are for. I know that there was not many pickups, but they were placed very well.

9 OUT OF 10

TOTAL = 36/40 (9.0)

DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION?

YEAH! :D

RANK: A = SUPERB!

@Fivecookies: The text events are just there for a joke. I had a strange error when I opened it in TSF. I got something saying that there are too many enemies in the level. So, I opened it in 1.23 and it worked.

@Cooba: I saved it in JCS too, I re-downloaded it and the text events are working now. How is that? What can JCS+ do that the normal JCS can’t?
