Lies. What I said was that if people take off points for the seeker powerup, you don’t have to worry about it.

This was the level I was suppose to beta test. That’s a shame.

GAMEPLAY:

The first thing I would have pointed out while beta testing this was the hidden bases. I would have suggested at least making it so that players can see the flags to be able to tell whether it’s there or not. As “innovative” as it may be, I don’t like the base placement as it is at all. Next, I would have mentioned the sucker tubes. It would be better if the gameplay didn’t have to depend on them so much. Also, I found the tubes that stuck a tile out of the walls to be quite annoying, especially the ones near the powerups. Then, I would have complained about the way the layout looked. It still seems a little too cleancut with the mud and everything. I especially dislike the area all around 74,6. There are some other things I don’t like about the layout, but I can’t put my finger on it; it’s related to the platform placement, though. The flow could be better in several places, but it’s nothing that will kill the gameplay. Everything else I can live with.

EYE CANDY:

Once again, the tileset wasn’t used well enough. Various tiling errors can been seen here and there. And the groups of four tiles placed in a square on layer 3, like the one right under the carrot, don’t add much of anything to the eye candy.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

The full energy carrot placed at the top. Despite the tubes near the two powerups in the side, the powerup placement is good enough. I can play with the way the ammo is placed, but it seems so commanplace and all. That’s all I can say.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

I wouldn’t say so. 6.7 is my rating.

PS: It’s interesting how the “space choon 57” mod is included but isn’t used. I can’t say I like it a lot more than “Jupiter Trails”, but at least it wouldn’t be the same old song once again. A different music choice other than TRAILS.S3M would’ve been my other beta test suggestion. I also don’t understand the name of this level. “Haties” doesn’t seem to be a real word, and I’m not sure as to what it refers to.

The Edit: I just remembered that the tubes on the sides of this level, especially the left side, are prone to cause the flag bug. 6.5 is my new rating. Fix it.[This review has been edited by BlurredD]

Time to review this…

EYECANDY:
Good/okay. You used good background layers, and the foreground is interesting. Although, some tiles in the sprtie layer are wrong placed, and the mud is sometimes a little bit boring.

AMMO:
Good ammo placement: three PUs: Toast, Seek and Bounce. The seeker PU is not to be found, but not’s not so bad. The ammo is placed well, not team-biased, and the full NRG carrot is good to reach.

LEVEL STRUCTURE:
The level is symmetrically, good structure, and nicely divided. Not much wrong, except the sucky base entrances. You have to concentrate on one spot to enter them, so you can not really run through them.

GAMEPLAY:
Actually I like this level. It’s fun to play when you got too now it, good combination of graphics, ammo and structure. Probably one of Sonic’s better levels, I guess.

A cute Capture The Flag level, but the sucker tubes really made it lose the entire concept of capture the flag because they went really far, and we all know that you cannot stop someone while they’re in a tube! The tileset used was basic custom stuff, cute though it may be. There’s really nothing to it.

But is it quite good? One could only wonder.

GAMEPLAY:

This level is big, though it’s incredibly open and there aren’t that many alternate routes considering its size. It’s also symmetrical, with ordinary gameplay—nothing special at all. The tube near each base is rather useless, except for helping the flow a bit, but some other method should have been used. The tube would be a little more useful if it was a smidgen faster. Speaking of the flow, it’s good enough; I’m not going to point out all of the microscopic details that could be improved. I dislike the layout of the bottom left and right corners. It feels as if I should be able to take a tube to a base, but I can’t. There’s basically one lousy route to each base. Argh.

EYE CANDY:

The tileset is mostly used well, but there are some flaws here and there. The eye candy is a little dull in places, but it’s mostly average.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

Carrot placement is okay, but I would prefer if it wasn’t behind those tiles in the third layer. This level might be bigger than the previous ones, but the ammo distribution would work better in a smaller level. There should be some more ammo in a lot of places. Powerup placement is good enough as it is.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

I can’t say yes. Maybe once or twice if boredom strikes. Could be better, but it’s getting there. 7.0 is my final rating.

The Edit: I changed my mind. 7.2 is my new final rating. The level is better than what I originally gave it credit for.[This review has been edited by BlurredD]

oK… I wanted to play a good level with my 2 hours of the day but I guess not, but it isnt bad yet it isnt good.

-Eyecandy is pleasent, yet kind of boring and very plain.

-Gameplay is very simple. To simple if you ask me, it is all hills and a few tubes. This is good though.

-Placement is good, you can get the ammo anytime but at a point there isn’t enough of it.

-Tile use was good, and it all worked together :D

This is a good 7.2 and it could be a 7.8 if you could “ spice “ it up a little with eyecandy and gameplay.

Well, I’m posting here my very first review on J20 ever! Let’s check out this level of old pal DS:

Level: The Dark Flag War
By: da man

EYECANDY:
Hmmm… Not bad, good tileset, the background layers are made nice and the sprite layer has correct tiles. The foreground layers are reasonable.

AMMO:
Good ammo placement, not too much not too less. Bad thing: when you start off you directly got the seek PU. Not nice in multiplayer!

LEVEL STRUCTURE:
The level is symmetric (nice!) but the two flag bases are in both upper corners of the level, so you can directly jump between them in a few seconds, without involving the rest of the level into the gameplay.

BUGS & ERRORS
I didn’t have any errors or bugs.

OMG CTF PACK ;D

Level 1: Diamond Dusts

The first thing I saw is that this looks stup. This diamondus edition misses colors and makes the level look sux. Also it took me a while to know where are the warps. It’s very easy to score. I won’t host this level after this review. The originality.. it pwns. I won’t make a level like this. I really wouldn’t. That’s what differs from others. At least no seek powerup. Sick or reviewing. Bye.
TOTAL: 5.4

Level 2: Morpheus City

I found some bugs to make you stuck. =( No seeker powerup in here. FUN. The powerups are again easy to access. I don’t think I like this level much.. It takes a while to find out that you can drop down at the white building thing. Argh. I got sick of this level enough now. BYE. =(
TOTAL: 6.4

Level 3: Castle of Control

I found myself at the blue base, without being able to go anywhere. I didn’t see a reason for a suckertube there. I got sick and cheated out. Rating LOWER. The level’s eyecandy itself looks dull. Sometimes the eyecandy is weird. And how about the MUSIC… that suxxxxxxxx. No more stupid things here. I hate this level. You can’t play this thing without cheating. That’s enough. Bye.

TOTAL: 3.2

LEVEL 4: Mega-Galactix

This has no red startpoint, I saw that on Blur’s server. Instead, that’s a BLUE START POINT. So I captured the flag instantly after spawning. The level’s on top place where you can drop down, you can actually pass. Spaz only. This level is spaz biased. Stuff. The level looks like Snooz’s level. Looks almost the same. The layout is although different. There are two toaster powerups on each side. The NO RED START POSITION is enough to make me NEVER host this level. No. No. No. No. No. Enough NO’es.

TOTAL: 3.2

OVERALL:
It’s an average CTF pack, mostly BELOW average. The CTF pack had no FUN in it.

Yeah, a CTF pack, so its time to review.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
yay. an CTF pack. Well, lets just say that it is average. there should be better eyecandy in some levels. Gamepaly could be better too. but lets continue with the review.btw, my reveiw will be quick..

LEVEL 1: Diamond dusts
EYECANDY: 6.5 – Hmm, standard eyecandy. no major compaliments. few tilebugs. spend more time to eyecandy.
GAMEPLAY: 7 – Moatly good, but could be better.
PLACEMENT 6.5 – Well, ammo placement is alrgiht. so are the bases. they shouldn’t have any warps though..
FUN FACTOR: 6 – this level is not fun.. mostly boring..
CONCLUSION:Standard level, but could use more eyecandy.. etc.
RATING:6.7
HOST THIS:No..

LEVEL 2: Morpheus city
EYECANDY: 7 Quite nice.. but it could use more eyecandy tiles..
GAMEPLAY: 6.7 – mostly good.. not very well balanced though.
PLACEMENT: 7 – Standard.. could be better. base placment is quite werid. don’t ask why, ;p
FUN FACTOR: 6.7 – well, its just too boring..
CONCLUSION:Average level. could use more eyecandy. and make your levels bigger.
HOST THIS:Nope..

Ok, im too lazy to write more, so lets just say that last two levels are average too, and they really could use more eyecandy. they should be larger too. next time when making a CTF pack, focus more on balance, and other things such as eyecandy. my rating is 6.7, good average rating.

A CTF pack. How intriguing.

Diamond Dusts

GAMEPLAY: Could use some actual gameplay and a bigger layout. And fewer warps. Or at least some indication of where each warp goes.
EYE CANDY: Tileset is slightly misused. Otherwise average.
CARROT PLACEMENT: Decent, considering the symmetrical layout.
AMMO PLACEMENT: Not the worse, but less ammo so close to the ground would be nice.
HOST THIS OFTEN? Not at all.

Morpheus City

GAMEPLAY: Not really balanced or easy to get around. Layout could also be larger. Got stuck several times.
EYE CANDY: It’s alright, although nothing special.
CARROT PLACEMENT: Decent, considering the unbalanced layout.
AMMO PLACEMENT: Could’ve been distributed a little better.
HOST THIS OFTEN? Never.

Castle of Control

GAMEPLAY: Rather bland and confusing at first. Could be less squared off and bigger.
EYE CANDY: Falls short of average. Tiles with the shadows on them should’ve been used.
CARROT PLACEMENT: Actually, not that bad.
AMMO PLACEMENT: Could also have been distributed a little better and perhaps not in dead ends.
HOST THIS OFTEN? No.

Mega-Galactix

GAMEPLAY: It’s like a ripoff of Snooz’s Galatic level only worse. Could use a start position for red team. And I got stuck at top left a few times.
EYE CANDY: Eye candy is either dull or could look better. It’s a poor imitation of Snooz’s eye candy with the same set.
CARROT PLACEMENT: Alright, although the idea was mostly taken from Snooz’s level.
AMMO PLACEMENT: Once again, could’ve been distributed a little better and maybe not in so many rectangles.
HOST THIS OFTEN? I wouldn’t say so.

Overall review: In all, I wasn’t impressed. My number one complaint would have to be all of the unnecessary hidden passages. A few more indications of where a warp is and where it leads to should have been used. All of these levels could be bigger. There are several Spaz-biased issues in some of these levels. More originality would have been a good idea. Etc, etc, etc. I would point out a few other flaws, but the beta testers should have caught them. The last level isn’t even playable. I’m not in the mood of writing a huge review at the moment. Considering everything, 6.2 is my rating. I find this rating to be generous, so take it or leave it.

For a second there, I thought I might have actually almost sort of liked this level.

GAMEPLAY:

This level looks more suited for a melee than an actual CTF game. I came to this conclusion based off of the small layout and the limited routes base to base. There simply isn’t much to this level. I can’t say the layout is too original. I dislike the warp target over the red spring (players could get stuck on that spring when hit while warping). The only decent part about this is that it’s balanced, but that’s only because it’s symmetrical.

EYE CANDY:

The eye candy is probably the best feature of this level, although it isn’t perfect and looks odd in various places. The lighting could also be better.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

Here lies a few more things I rather dislike. I don’t like how the full energy carrot is so close to the RF and toaster powerups. I know it’s a small level, but that’s not an excuse. My other complaint has to go with the ammo placement. While there is enough ammo throughout the level, it seems a bit too easy too access. This isn’t a big problem, but it does help make the gameplay a little more chaotic.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

I can’t say yes. Bigger is still better. And add more routes next time. I’m making 6.2 my rating, but this level is better than the last one.

It’s a CTF level.

EYECANDY – - 7.6
The eyecandy is OK except the little brown walls. They have an eyecandy bug. Other stuff is fine and some places have a good eyecandy but the brown wall stuff. =(

GAMEPLAY – - 7.2
Easy, excellent but boring. There’s a boring way between the bases. Just run left and right. Jazz biased. Spaz users could accidentally fall, but Jazz users can copter. Also, you don’t need to go down anytime. There are a few narrow passages which don’t really add anything to gameplay.

ORIGINALITY – - 4.5
Two other levels what use the same tileset&music combination. What’s the fun in that?

FUN FACTOR – - 4.4
One boring straight way between the bases and everything else down. No fun. Unlaugh. Too easy and other stuff.

PLACEMENT – - 6.5
It’s good enough to get over 6. The way between the toaster and RF powerup is a boring straight way which is too easy. The bouncer powerup and the full health carrot are in the middle. The platforms around the carrot isn’t fun, but fine.

OVERALL – - 5.5
This level cannot be called FUN. The boring ways between the bases and the two powerups are… boring. No fun in them. Tileset was misused in many places and stuff. 5.5 and no more.

Another level to review. Hooray.

GAMEPLAY:

Well, at least I don’t have to complain about balance too much. But I have to say, I don’t like the way the layout looks at all. Either it’s a squared-off corner or a hideously shaped platform. I couldn’t bare to look at it anymore after several minutes of hosting it. But… I must. Another thing that annoyed me a lot was the platform above the carrot. The platform is thin, so it naturally looks like the entire thing would be covered with one ways. Some different tiles should have been used where there aren’t one way events. A few of the narrow passages annoyed me, such as around 37,20 and 63,20. As for the flow, it could be better, but considering all of the problems I mentioned, it’s not half bad.

EYE CANDY:

The tileset was misused throughout much of this level. If the set wasn’t misused, it just looked dull and ordinary. And I detest the way the background looks. I also detest the yellow and black tiles pointlessly placed in front of the carrot.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

Carrot and powerup placement actually isn’t that bad; it’s the surrounding areas that irk me. I can’t say I like that huge open space near the RF or the toaster powerup. The placement of ammo needs much improvement. Too much ammo is too close to the ground, and distribution needs refining.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

Nope. And the last level was better. 6.2 is my rating.

Another level to review. Hooray.

GAMEPLAY:

The layout isn’t particularly interesting, but it isn’t a bad one. I can get around easily enough, but spring placement could be a lot better in places, such as with all six of the blue springs near the middle of the level. I never really liked the placement of a lot of tiles with one way events on top of one another mainly because players can stop halfway through. The stacks of one way tiles below the full energy carrot could possibly be used strategically (i.e. camping midway up this passageway), but that’s nearly suicide, since seekers can go through one ways, and players can only go up through them. The biggest problem of this level has to be the fact that when I’m close to the full energy carrot, I could take a nearby blue spring and just double jump towards a base while Jazz players will have to take a longer route. This level seems a bit too much on the Spaz-biased side.

EYE CANDY:

The eye candy is meant to be original, but it comes off as confusing and annoying. It’s not horrible, but I can’t say I like it. Over-Wasted should have been named Over-Used. I’m getting tired of seeing this tileset, and it has just about reached its limit.

CARROT AND AMMO PLACEMENT:

The full energy carrot and powerup placement don’t leave much use for the bottom half of this level most of the time. The only thing particularly useful at the bottom is the +1 carrot, although naturally, it wouldn’t be my first choice if I wanted a carrot. I would rather have the RF and bouncer powerups closer to the bottom, and perhaps the seeker powerup not so close to the full energy carrot. Ammo placement could also be better. I would say too many bouncers and RFs are placed at the top; some different ammo should have also been added. There’s also too much variety in ammo at the bottom middle and not enough variety at the bottom left and bottom right corners.

HOST THIS OFTEN?

Nope. And the last level was better. 6.5 is my rating.

Not rating as high as Snooz. Yay.

EYECANDY – - 7.7

The eyecandy is OK. Mostly average. The level is kinda symmetrical. I like teh eyecandy. You used layers 3,4,6,7 and of course 8. Fun.

GAMEPLAY – - 7.4

The level is symmetrical, like described at the eyecandy section. Blue has an advantage with their RFs than the red with their bouncers. And a seek powerup in the middle (-1.0 points). The seek powerup.. It ruins the game already. It would be fine in battle, but NOT IN CTF. If a lot of people are playing, you won’t stand a chance without it. This level involves a lot of camping at the seek powerup. No, it isn’t a good thing. Gameplay needs improvement. 7.4 is fine for gameplay.

PICKUP PLACEMENT – - 7.4 (-1 points)

The -1 points are for the seek powerup. I happened to describe above that blue has an advantage. It is, for the RF powerup they have and red has bouncers. No advantages to other team pleaseee..
Also close to blue base are 4 +3seeker ammo. Guess are they close to RED base? No. This is a blue biased level. Wee. Snooz overrated on THIS section. Carrots are placed good. One +1 carrot and a fullhealth carrot. Good if the fullH carrot is taken and you need a little health. It’s like 7.4 for here (-1.0)

FUN FACTOR – - 5.4

The seeker powerup ruins it all. And the bluebiased stuff. This level is fun to play.. if you got the seek powerup that is. After being roasted the first time, you probably get roasted over and over again every time. Camp-ability at the seek powerup and the full health carrot is not good. The fun factor is 5.4.

OVERALL – - 7.2 (-1.0)
At least not the worst level available. Download recommendation if you like annoyance. Otherwise, NEVER. Host this often? NO NO NO PLEASE PLEASE. SERVERS WITH THIS LEVEL ARE AWFUL AND BORING ;(

Hmm, this level is very good, probably the best one of the Author. I decided to review this, and i have lot of time, so be prepared for a long review.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
hmm. eyecandy is ok, so is the gameplay. pickup placement is good, tileset use is quite standard.. i think this is a good level for download, and i must admit that this is the best level of the author. but lets continue.

EYECANDY:Eyecandy is quite standard, i see no tilebugs, and there are lots of eyecandy in the background layers. i think i have no other comments about eyecandy..
TILESET USE:Hmm, standard, like it usually is. ;p
Tileset was used rightly, and i have no major complaiments.. ;p
background layers look nice, but it moves little bit too fast, and looks confusing sometimes. Standard use of the tileset.
GAMEPLAY:Hmm, good. its quite smooth, there is ramps, etc.
no much comments, but its ok/standard/smooth
;p
by the way, i have one complaiment, dead ends near the bases.. i would rate this higher if there would be no dead ends..
ITEM PLACEMENT:Hmm weapons are rightly placed. I like about placement, and there is full energy/seek powerup on the middle. good.
CONCLUSION:Well, a nice level by Da man.
and yup, i give a Download recommedation. this is quite nice level, and my final rating is 7.5, and i don’t think its over-rating.
