The map is very nice (aldo those flying things gave me a headache :D ). The eye-candy is very nicely done, and I liked the weapon placement. I also like the way you’ve combined the carrots with the death pits. Overall the map is very interesting (at specially the background). It will be interesting if this map makes it on some of the servers.

PS: Somehow i don’t think this is a perfect 10 (sorry, but keep up the good work)

Olsen… Olsen… Rings a bell. It’s been a while, I remember you from back in the day… BrainFart and such. Good times. Well, I’ve seen the level, time to hand down my verdict.

Gameplay: Mediocre
Cloud Connected, a CTF level that takes place in the higher planes. The level is fairly small (101×64) and nearly symmetrical. It is nearly symmetrical since a route opens depending on which team you are. More on that later.

This level consists of a few platforms and a bottom. The bottom is very simple and simply leads back up through the use of a sucker tube. The platforms are nicely divided, though the flow in some places could be a lot better. For example, when arriving from any side at (51,38), you don’t wanna hold the arrow keys, ‘cause that’ll result in your undeniable downfall. I think it’d be better if you put some one-way floors in that ceiling you’ll bump into.

The bases are something else. First of all, the bases are on a little plateau, so when you just run into the base, you’ll find yourself missing the flag. Instead, a small well-timed jump should get you your precious flag. Then, on the way back, you’ll notice one thing. On your side of the level, there’s a gate that is closed on the other side. This is decided by triggers, depending your team choice. Behind this door, at the top of the level and not far from the flag, is a +1 carrot and a Bouncer PU. The carrot can be shot down if you, for whatever reason, want to make it accessible to the enemy. If the door is closed, The Bouncer Pu can also be acquired by using the Electro Blaster… or just going to your own side of the level.

Next to the carrots, there’s also a full NRG in one of the tubes in the middle of the level. There is one downside to this, since all tubes have a common exit. Therefore, it’s easy to predict where the enemy will end up. Thankfully, you can also (partially) heal at the private base, so that clears this problem quite well.

The level features two Bouncer PU’s (one for each base) and a Seeker PU with plenty of ammo to make sure you’ll keep on blasting. With this amount of carrots, that’s a good thing.

Atmosphere: So-so
The level uses the Dreamland tileset, which isn’t very rich in original tiles. In fact, it lacks quite a lot of tiles that should be included with such a ‘curvy’ tileset.

For example, Olsen makes use of some of the ‘cave’ tiles. These tiles are nice on their own, but they do not connect to any of the cloud tiles, which is the main ground for the level. This is a tileset design flaw, but it could have been helped by using layer 5. Unfortunately, Olsen has decided to use layer 5 for another batch of background clouds. Luckily, this looks very nice and hopefully distract you from the many tilebugs that are made using this ‘cave’ tile.

Olsen creatively uses translucency and brick tiles to add eyecandy to the walls, which are otherwise very bland. Using translucency to make the bricks pink is a really nice addition.

Overall: Okay
This level has a few minor design flaws concerning flow and predictability, but it’s very fun to play in nonetheless. If you can’t be bothered by a few little tilebugs, this level should be in your folder as of today.

Download Recommendation: Yes
The level is certainly fun and quite ideal for duels or 2vs2s. Try it.

Score: 7.3
It’s hard to judge a level like this, since it’s both fun and has those few minor flaws… Though, if you play this a few times, you’ll be sure to see that this level is actually quite fun to play in.

Gameplay

This is great. The level is very platformy, but it is still really easy to run around. I really like the suckertubes placed at the sides. Anyway, the level symmetrical and kind of small, which makes it easy to learn, even with all the platforms. You just run smoothly through the whole level with the springs and stuff. It’s great!

Eyecandy

I really like this. It doesn’t get in the way, even though it’s dark. The leaves have nice shapes. I also really like the white flashes! But they might become annoying, especially in a long ctf match. You’d have to turn on low detail (Even then it looks rather good!). It’s sometimes a little too dark though. Vines are hard to see, for example.

Eventing
Good. There is enough for everyone and the PU’s are balanced. Yeah, not a lot to say.

Bugs
Just a rare one: at 53,43 you might get stuck, but it’s minor. Sometimes I think it’s a little bit too dark also.

General
It’s a good level and I would like to play a lot in this! I also like the music, it really fits with this.

VISUAL
Layer 6/7 has some cave tiles with some trees on top, which looks very smart. This is very similar to the background in It’s over by Booshi. On the foreground layer, there are tons bushes placed randomly throughout the level, which looks very ugly. Food has been placed on the walls as well. Again, this looks ugly. Trees have been used quite well, though. In general, the eyecandy is ugly in some areas, but it looks good overall.
4/5

GAMEPLAY
The gameplay in this level is quite original. There is plenty of ammo, and not too many in any area. There isn’t too many annoying obstacles, except the occasional area that requires excessive jumping. A lot of the PU’s in the level are inside the wall and need to be got using the Electo Blaster. Spring’s are used a lot, to save you jumping, execept in some areas that need them. There is also a coin warp that requires 30 coins. The coins in the level are placed in diagonal lines randomly around the level. There is a seeker PU in the warp. Also there are hardly any carrots. In general, the gameplay is very good.
4/5

GOOD POINTS

*Nice Gameplay
*Original
*Nice level layout

BAD POINTS

*The Bushes are placed randomly
*Not many carrots
*Needs more springs

VERDICT
This is another nice level by XLM, but there are still some ways it can be improved.

FINAL SCORE
8.5

EDIT – After more careful studying and playing, I think this level deserves a higher rating.

Eyecandy

Where have I seen this It’s kinda hard for me to rate this level, for obvious reasons; it uses the Diamondus Beta tileset which is very familiar to me. Anyway out of the whole ec, I especially like the bg layers (6 and 7), with caves and trees behind them, like in blacky’s crematoria (?) gf level. And as for the worst thing in this level, the foreground bushes. They look as if they were placed randomly without any thought involved.

That’s all for the best/worst things, now lets get back to the EC as the whole. I liked how some of the diamonds had the Steady Light events on them (not too noticable on a normal speedy game though); there was some food in the soil (an interesting effect, but I didnt like it too much). It could use a few more holes in the soil and more trees on the layer 3. I also found a tilebug in the bonus (a cut cavern).

Gameplay

Well uh, what can be said about gameplay? Firstly, the layout is built nicely, it can produce fairly fast-paced games, without any bumps or obstacles. You can run from one end of the level to the other with barely even having to jump. The bonus (seek PU) also speeds up the gameplay. The only thing which may slow it down (which is good since too much of fast pace can get on nerves) are the powerups hidden in walls – Blaster, RF, Bouncy.

And since we’re speaking of ammo, I should note that there are all kinds of ammo (w/o tnt), accessible easily and in fair amounts. There are also three carrots here, which would be good but two of them are in the 30 coins warp. Maybe there are more carrots but i found only those 3 :/

Summary
  • Nice layer work
  • Well placed, easily obtainable (wth hard word >O) ammo
  • Interesting layout
  • The bushes look bad
  • A bit too few holes in the ground?
  • Could use more carrots
Overall Back to “where have I seen this”, we can outline a few things which have been done already:

But anyway, these things don’t make any bad effect, they actually make the level have a ‘familiar’ feel which makes it deserve appreciation.

Dear gods, that’s one very ugly WinAMP Classic skin. It doesn’t reflect the site very well, either. It just looks like a generic 2.x skin in hues of yellow, white, and orange. . . I don’t recommend this skin. But I do recommend “FruityAMP”. [runs]

Winamp classic skin.
Nice, but has few bugs which make this a bit unusable thing. For example, no border around the seeker bar, plus it’s too light. There is some empty box, which looks just plain ugly.
Going back to the default Winamp Modern Skin.

Noticed “rate if you like” to deserve high rating… So I am scared of that you’ll get N/A, not 10…

Time to review.
EYECANDY: 8
It’s excellent. All layers from 1 to 8 are used. I like the snow. But the water looks ugly in 8-bit colour. Layer 3 is used for the plants. There are some waterfalls, but I think that there should be more.
EVENTS: 7
The seeker PU is stuck in a wall so you can’t always reach the maximum number of seekers you can have, the toaster PU too. Weapon placement isn’t bad, but it could have been better like in Distopia. You could’ve added more ammo.
GAMEPLAY: 8.2
I liked the tube placed instead of a dead end. I have no problems when playing with Jazz. This level isn’t too small and isn’t too big. Good music.

Christmax
Another Christmas-based level, yay! This time it’s a special one: The first level to be released in a while by Olsen and also the first one to be released for him inside the Xtreme Level Makers department. I wonder if XLM improved his level creating skills. By the way, this will be the first review in which I combine the factors gameplay and structure to one factor, since I never really had to say much about the gameplay alone. Also, the category AMMO is replaced for PLACEMENT since I now also cover carrots and PU’s with it. Well, here goes.

EYECANDY: 2.0 out of 2.5
Ah, another level with the Diamondus β tileset series. This time the night version was used, for the second time in six days (I used it too in Bay Of Diamonds which I uploaded Sunday) I can see you looked to the eyecandy in my level since I recognise certain parts of it, but it’s still different. For example, layer 5 wasn’t used for caves/waterfalls but for trees, which is a decent thing. I couldn’t find any tiling errors in the level (bravo) and overall the eyecandy looked very good. Not as good as FireSworD’s level by far, but I think it’s about the same as my level. Some parts are a little bit empty though, but I can’t directly figure out a way to solve this. The snow effects work nice with this set.

PLACEMENT: 1.7 out of 2.5
Now on with the ammo and other pickup stuff. There are some things to say about the ammo here: first of all, the kinds of ammo that are placed are allright: you have all sorts of weapons (seekers, toaster, bouncie, pepperspray, RF and electroblaster) and there are two Powerups (Seeker and Toaster, which are only reachable with EB) Apparently one +1 carrot seems to be enough for the whole level, some more in other corners would be nice. I also think that some parts of the level are a little bit too empty, you could have add ammo to those places to make them more useful.

STRUCTURE & GAMEPLAY 3.9 out of 5.0
Now on with structure/gameplay, for the first time combined into one. The structure here is typical for a battle level and it has a really good flow to move yourself around. Also, many forms of structure are used (vines, sucker tubes, springs, etc.) which entertains me. I’m a huge fan of useless text strings (like in EvilMike’s levels) and I like them especially when my name is in it, although I didn’t notice it during beta-testing. I like the slope part with the holes in it, this is truly a good thing. The warps however seem a little bit useless in my opinion, since the level is quite small and they aren’t really necessary. The same thing goes for the water (you can’t really swim in this level, but it looks good with the eyecandy however) I liked the music file used a lot.

RATINGS:
XLM seems to have a positive influence on you since this level is better than everything you’ve uploaded to J2O before. The eyecandy is just allright, the ammo placement is fine and the structure and game are both good. I like to see this level hosted during the Christmas server, and probably even more. You’ve got a 7.6 from me for this level, and a download recommendation. Good Job!
Score: 2.0+1.7+3.9 = 7.6
Download: Yeah, it’s a funny level.
Host: Sometimes, at least during the Christmas server.
Greetings,
- ChippieBW
