I suppose I should review this, I mean you reviewed mine, so I’ll pass on the favour ;)
Heh, anyways, the quality of the drawn tiles are amazing, the textures used are top notch and the animations are seamless. It contains loads of extra eye candy tiles for layer 4 and extra layers, along with poles and vines that can be used.
Apart from that, the masking is perfect, I can’t see any jaggies to get stuck in, everything is smoothed out (including on that animation, I was impressed with that). Okay, that’s the good points, but there are some flaws I noticed.
Firstly, there are no diagonal tiles, a huge flaw in my opinion, diagonals are just as important as the flat tiles themselves, it does a lot to make a level cooler ;)
Apart from that, the textured background (made in teralogic texture maker, same thing I use, nice) doesn’t work in 8-bit mode. If you had those fixed this would’ve been an extremely high quality tileset, along with the best of the best, good job and carry on with sets! ;)
Re-uploaded thanks to a little bug in the Unreal Imagination exmaple level (no start positions).
Apart form that, I dont rip, the word itself sends shivers down my spine, those leaves are MY leaves, I can prove it too! :P
Heh, I’ll do that if you beg enough
P.S. What is masterattackz? do u have a screenie or somehting liek that? im nosey to see how close my tiles are to that to call them ripped…
P.S.S. Those ‘Rail Stoppers’ in the space warbase tileset are turrets and bunkers. They are pretty easy to use, just run into them and shoot :P[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Overall it’s a great pack with amazing levels, i’ve only got one complaint really.
Chemical Warfare, ugh, why is it edited? I can understand if the shield was removed, but you can’t get the seekers anymore, and the carrot is removed. Sigh, I just love that level, it’s my favourite level, and now all the fun of that seeker powerup is removed, i have so many good memories of playing that a long time ago, it was so much fun, but it’s edited :(
Reply to post by EvilMike: You have to shoot the seeker powerup to get it, and you need coins to get it, which was what the level was originally made to be like. I made the seeker powerup shoot-only so that flag holders couldn’t camp up in the coin warp without being shot easily.[This review has been edited by EvilMike]
I don’t care what the level was supposed to be made like. It was great fun to play the way we used to play it. And are you really sure that Epic made it that you MUST use the warp? I can’t think that they would put electroblasters next to the seeker powerup without knowing that people would use it to get the seekers. You needed 20 coins for the carrot, not the seeker powerup. Besides, it was great fun as a n00b calling people cheaters when they ran around with powered seekers at the start of the game ;)[This review has been edited by Disguise][This review has been edited by Disguise]
HAHHAHAHAH!!! YOU’VE ALL BEEN APRIL FOOZLED!!! This entire tileset is a joke, a phoney, FAKE! I got the idea yesterday when I was busy talking to alberto to make a simple tileset and then hype it like crazy to fool everyone! AND IT WORKED! HAH! 24 reviews in one day!
Firstly, I would like to thank Alberto, Bobby, Evilmike, Fquist, Newspaz, and Shadow for helping me with insanely high reviews, thanks guys! You made it an eye opener :D
All their reviews will be edited, and an honest review will be given. About the other high ratings, I have no idea, hehehe, some might’ve seen the ‘april fools’ message written in the mask and decide to play along, I have no idea, but rate it honestly guys, the joke is over ;)
Also, I would like to thank Voldard for reviewing, by doing so I managed to guess who he really is ;)
Very good ctf level. A nice tileset choice, and used very well, giving nice eye candy.
IMO, the best part of the level is that it is very open, i’m a sucker for open levels, and it just doesn’t get any better than this, no cramped moving areas, you have huge spaces to move through. If that’s not enough to please you, the level is very fluent and once you get to know your paths you barely ever have to use the jump key. Some float up scenery was also used to get over annoying flat areas that could’ve been used as diagonals in the mask of the set, but i’d better finish about that now, I’m picky about masks and this is not a tileset review ;)
Event placement is good, but there are some debatable issues. There are a lot of powerups, but carrots balance that. One thing though is that the carrots are hard to reach, and if you go for them there’s a very high chance the opposing team will get your flag before you can score a point. It’s a huge risk, and is nice in a way, but some people might not like it. I’m undecided though, as I like the idea to take a risk, but when playing it can be very annoying at times.
That’s it really, a very good level and deserves a thumbs up! 8.5 sounds about right, so here ya go! :D
I was wowed by this set since the moment I saw the first beta test. It’s amazing. Ok, for a proper review. The tileset looks like a tropical island (hence the name) and has all the tiles you need to make one (including cool looking heads, heheh). Textures are very well drawn, as well as shading, you can see that it’s done professionally. The background looks beautiful! I love the ship, the water and the sun, it’s perfect. Also, as a trick for level makers, you can change the textured background colour (the colour it fades to) to 255 red and 96 green. You’ll have a beautiful reddish sunset :D
The music was a perfect choice. Well, okay, it was my choice, but when I saw the set I knew Monkey Island was gonna fit perfectly with it. Besides, it’ll be a shame to waste it on a beach level, so I hope you like it ;)
—-===Edited===—-
I did NOT rate the music. I just made a comment on it. Lemme clear that up.
For those of you that complain that there aren’t enough nature sets, this is definitley for you! And stop complaining (you know who you are).[This review has been edited by Disguise][This review has been edited by Disguise]
Oh, forgot to mention. I’m sure you will all see the blue springs above the red base and complain that it doesn’t reach the top. Well, this is intentional guys, it’s a one way route ;)
If you think I’m gonna make it that easy to get the seeker powerup, then think again ;)
—-===Edited===—-
What Bjarni mentioned was a legit bug. I removed the Jazz Startbefore I uploaded, but forgot to add the MP starts afterwards. Latest version is fixed, thanks to ET for mentioning this.[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Music thing fixed, although I’m SURE I put it in, I even checked twice. Hmmm, maybe I need some coffee, lack of sleep is getting to my head now. Anyways, enjoy! ;)
—-==Update==—-
It IS uploaded, I just downloaded to check, maybe you need some coffee too ;)[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Hmmm, I suppose I’m the only person that really knows how many ripped tiles there really are (At least I hope not). Anyways, now to start wih the review (or nagging as Cell puts it ;)
Well, there are ripped tiles, and I don’t like ripped tiles one bit. No point in giving someone a high rating for somehting he didn’t draw, so I lower the reating a bit. The brick texture looks sorta nice, but it doesn’t tile. Well, it does, but not like it’s supposed to, you get thin lil’ icky pieces inbetween. Could have been fixed with a little resizing. Apart from that, those brick textures don’t have a nice lil’ border around them, so it looks a bit plain. There are some extra eye candy blocks included though, like windows, pictures, spears leaning on walls, and (holds his breath) various other stuff taken from epic sets. The background bricks tile a bit better than the ones you walk on, but they have a little flaw themselves. In this set the background blocks are a lot lighter than the ones you actually walk on, and it doesn’t really seem right. Usually the stuff in the background are darker than the ones you walk on (And since this is a castle, I doubt they actually painted them lighter ;)
The background does look nice though, but it’s huge compared to the amount you really need, this has a little advantage (since enough tiles are left this isn’t bad). You can choose which bit of the background you want to use (time to cut out the pieces of it that doesn’t fit together).
Speaking of backgrounds, there are hardly any extra layer eye candy. The rain is the only thing, but there could be more imaginative things in a castle tileset (say, for example, the huge ‘damsel in distress’ tower to put in layer 7)
Now, to finish it off with the basic tiles. There are some, and others there aren’t (Cell mentioned there aren’t sucker tubes). Anyways, lemme list the ones there are:
Text board (Taken from Epic)
Vine (Taken from Labrat)
Hurt (Taken from Castle)
Destruct Blocks (Taken from Epic)
One last thing (a chance to get some more needles for my voodoo doll, lol), the mask could’ve been improved a bit, there are some jaggies, it would be better to smooth them out and make nice flat surfaces. Because this didn’t affect the gameplay much (or increase the chances of getting stuck) ‘m not gonna change the rating because of it, but it would be nice to change and fix it.
Conclusion: Not really that good, the part that took your rating down the most was those ripped tiles, but the texture on the tiles don’t even tile correctly, and it could’ve been fixed fairly easily. Download this if you want to, but nothing special.
Not a bad battle level, but I have seen better lately. I seem to navigate it pretty smoothly (with Jazz and Spaz). Strangely, the design sorta resembles that of battle 1, a level I don’t really like that much, but other ppl i know do ;)
Another ting for those tileset junkies out there, the level uses the ‘drop dead gorgeous’ Egypt tileset by Agama, some amazing stuff ;)
Well, like everyone else said, the cinematics and tileset are drop dead gorgeous! But, ultimately, it’s about the levels. There are loads on innovative ways in which the tileset is used in the levels, but I don’t want to spoil this for you, so I’ll keep quiet ;)
Anyways, that’s the good points, there are soem bad ones as well. Firstly I think the levels are a bit too short. Just as I start to enjoy the level I’m passing the finish. I also feel it was a bit too easy, too few enemies placed to sparsely. It’s more like a story than a challenging pack.
Yes, the first thing that comes into mind is Another Story, and loads fo people loved it, but I didn’t like it that much, but still, it was good and so is this, so it’s definitley worth the download ;)
—-==Edited==—-
My apologies to a bit mentioned above, it was fairly easy, but you can change the difficulty level. The difference isn’t too much, but it is harder and more features to the level, so I’ll boost my rating a bit! ;)[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Hmmm, where to start. Ah yes, I must say that I think discofever is definitley better than this tileset.
Other than that, this is a very decent set, but a few flaws made it worse. There isn’t enough texture on the tiles, why this wasn’t taken care of so nicely as in discofever I don’t know. You can see that the tiles are hand drawn, but done very nicely. Heck, this tileset has three major sections to use (so you don’t gte bored) and loads of other mini-sections to back it up. Nice layer work and all the ‘event’ tiles you need.
Another big problem is the mask. It has loads of jaggies in it, and it’s not very nice if someone wants to use it for their level (and can make some people get stuck). If you took more time to smooth this out I would’ve boosted the rating by a lot. The mask is very important.
Anyways, as a final comment: This is a very nice tileset, but the mask and lack of texture brings the rating down. It’s still worth a download though ;)
It’s a nice tileset overall, and the first Japanese tileset made for Jazz 2. It contains various Japanese houses and lamps and stuff like that, but there are some drawbacks:
1) There are tiles ripped from epic tilesets (trees, backround trees, mountains), bad, BAD mistake in my opinion, I don’t like it.
2) The textured background doesn’t work. There are ppl who would gladly help you with it (I am one myself), just ask ;)
3) On an artistic note, the ground tiles lack texture, it’s one colour all the way through (except the 2 eye candy tiles, but that doesn’t help too much). If you took more time in drawing those, your rating would’ve boosted, and your tileset would’ve looked a lot better. It’s the most important block of the tileset, and the one used the most.
Another thing. Good job for placing about 1000 boards around that tell ppl NOT to rate the level, I like that ;)
BRILLIANT!!! THIS IS THE BEST TILESET EVER!!!!! NOT OOOONNNEEEEE THING WRONG!!! DRAWN PERFECTLY!!!!! I LOOOOVE THIS TILESET!!!!!!
If you do NOT!!! download this you are the STUPIDEST PERSON ALIVE!!!! This tileset can’t be beaten, I don’t think this tileset can EVER be beaten!!!
Aiko will break his own rules with this one. He will realize this is the MOST AWESOME SET IN THE WHOOOLE WORLD EVER and give it a 10! I know he will, he HAS to give it a 10, I can’t imagine it ever getting anything lower, it’s just amazing.
On a side note: This makes all the effort I put into my latest tileset look like newbie junk. Seriously, I was busy drawing about the same thing and this is just AMAZING compared to it!
—-==Review Edited==—-
Hmmm, it seems that the graphics are out of this world, but they hide many bugs. I ignored the few I saw in the example level and still gave it a 10, because a tileset that looks like this deserves it. However, the more I work with it the more I realise bugs are a serious problem, and some necessary tiles are missing. Next time, PLEASE make sure u fixed that before u upload another tileset.[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Awesome set, it has everything you need to make a good level. The tileset itself and the ctf lvl reminds me a bit of Spacey Universe, but there is enough variety to be different. The guy is an alien, so he has to make himself a homeland :)
Some tiles were ripped (like the warps from mez03), so I’m reducing the rating. I don’t like ripped tiles, it’s almost like taking credit for what someone else made. If it wasn’t for that you would’ve had a perfect 9 from me (sorry), but this is still a great tileset and definitley worth the download if you’re a futuristic tileset fan! :D
How can a person NOT like this tileset?
It’s perfect, in any way a tileset can be…
No start positions found?!
—-==Edited==—-
Hehhe, I fixed that problem, there were start positions, but they weren’t functional, anyways, enjoy the level! ;)[This review has been edited by Disguise]
Phew, you’re lucky I checked the downloads section today. I’m not gonna ahve internet for quite a while (thanks to school vacation). Oh well, enjoy the download, and look out for my next upload in about a wekk and a half.
It’s already finished, but I figured I should wait . Besides, I’ve never done anything like it before in my entire life :)
You know, it’s just not fair! I’m sitting here with no way of reviewing these tilesets no matter how much I want to. sob as soon as I get my internet be sure to check this again! :)
Btw, ET do ya remember me? ;)
Of coooouuuurrrrrrrrsssshhhheeee I’m wEiRd! :)
HIC Hecks, I’m so weird I made a tileset of a F**** (that is not what it seems, i just censored the word cuz that would give away what the tileset is). Anyways, review time:
This is a brilliant tileset. I spent ages just looking at it trying to find mistakes, but there are none. It’s just plain awesome, and I am still weird :)
…Ok I’m back. The review was short because the bell went for maths, but the teacher wasn’t there so I’m back to elaborate a bit on the review.
If you are a Mez01 fan (or your name is Syntax where you live and die by Mez01) you should definitley download this. It’s the same as those stinking little pokemon, ya gotta get them all! The tiles (in my view) are drawn better than the ones in Mez01. They are more ‘shiny’ and that extra level of colour depth was added to make it look more colourful than Mez01. Of course some people might like that ‘same consistent feel’ and ‘sorta dull and dark’ that you get in Quake 1 & 2 (of course Mez01 isn’t THAT bad) better than this, but that is their opinion.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a top-class tileset from a top-class guy! As a matter of fact, let me thank him again for all his help and effort he put into Spacey Universe. If it wasn’t for Newspazzy here that tileset wouldn’t have had a textured background.
(NOTE: The above statement does not make me biased and it will in no way affect the original rating that I had planned for this tileset)
Good job Newspaz! you deserve it.[This review has been edited by Disguise]
