CTF Release Review 02: Myriadus.
Introduction to Myriadus: this level, was made by LRK, who is in OLC. The level is made with the Beach tileset. I can also say that the name is very weird.
Gameplay:
I’ll start off with the flow. I ran from base to base, and I did not even had any problems with it. The flow is so good, I did not have to jump at all. The level’s layout is LRK-like, but it’s good. Not too high, but it has a high width. The level looks huge, but actually, it isn’t. The spring placement was good, like I already said with the flow. I can run from base to base without any problem. The level’s one ways were useful, and I like it. I found a bug at 128,134, there needs to be a Float Up there. The level has a trigger system, which is good too. The level’s coin warp gives you the RF power-up, and I will tell more about it later. I can say I like the level’s gameplay.
Eye candy:
the level uses basic Beach eye candy. The rain on the foreground is something I’ve never seen before, irl it’s strange that it rains on a Beach, because you won’t go there then. The water in this level is made well, it looked good. The level has good eye candy in layer 3, and layer 5’s eye candy is also good. The level even has some eye candy in layer 6, and layer 1 and 7 contain the rain that make me say that I like teh eye candy in this level. The tileset is used very well too, and like I said, there is alot in the layers, so the layer use is good too.
Pickup placement: let’s start off with the ammo. The level has a good ammo placement. most ammo is on the ground/close to the ground. There are crates with ammo too, which let you get enough ammo after you’ve just been killed. The level has 2 +1 Carrots, which are good placed. The other level with 2 +1 Carrots had them just next to each other. The Power-up placement is good enough. There is Bouncy at the left side, that you get with gun 9/Bouncies. There is Toaster at the right side, that you get with Gun9. And there is RF in the coin warp of 20 coins. The coins are placed well too. There is TNT too in the level, and you can get the two power-ups at the sides of the level with TNT too, I forgot. No seeker power-up this time, which isn’t bad. It can be good that there is no Seek PU in a level. I think the RF power-up rocks in this level, and that’s why I think you can only get it with the coin warp here.
Others: this level is original. The music fits good with this level. There are some original ideas such as the water, the RF PU in the bonus, and more. The level can be fun to play in, because of the ammo you can get after you just died. The rain in this level makes it even more original. I can’t say alot more about this level.
Host: Sure.
Download: download it or you’ll miss an original level with the Beach tileset.
My final rating is 8,0. I would give it 8,1 if I could, but I have problems with that.
Edit: I can give 8.1, so here you have your +0.1.
First of all I’d like to thank LRK for asking me to test this level. I like the general atmosphere of Myriadus the most. It uses an original concept with the beach tileset – rain is used in the foreground. We’ve all seen levels using rain but the music which is taken from Donkey Kong Country 2 features the sound of wind and the subtle sound of rain when it hits upon the ground is what really makes the atmosphere of this cool and unique level. Although the rain tile was taken from one of the ships as LRK informed me; the rain does not look out of place, perhaps maybe a bit big though, but looks superior to what BlurredD did with rain in one of his recent levels Anarchy Inn. :P
LRK used the same style for making the layout as he did in polyglotics. A style I am not particularly fond of but it works, very balanced. It’s basicly very linear, huge platforms, the flowing is, as with all of LRK’s levels, excellent.
My first impressions on the eyecandy (not including the rain) when I first saw the level was very, very bland. The background looked horrible, although the layer 4 eyecandy was improved since the last time, the background still looks dismal. Use of water at the bottom left, can’t swim in it but looks a little nice, like it’s a large puddle of water. The placement of alge on the wooden structures was surprisingly well done and almost makes up for the dull background.
LRK placed the ammo well, all I can say really. Some of the placement of other things were interesting, in fact, the two +1 carrots were placed on opposite sides of a platform is one of the best reasons to try this level online. Download it now!
You should write a review on it after. ;)

EDIT: Ever seen a Hurricane DS? Oh, and Cooba, you will have to jump around to some extent if you’re going to play this, unless you’re one of thoose people who believes obstacles or little challenges in competetive CTF levels make them better you may want to redefine your way of looking at CTF levels.
My first level was much worse than this one, though. It might be called the worst level ever.
A lot of my would-be first lvls are single player, but then I realised it was too hard and I quit lvl making and only restarted 2 years later. :D
I deleted all of my old, unfinished SP lvls, but they were mostly worse than yours, LBK. ;P No background (it was all black, making the screen go blurry) and I assumed that poles, vines and spikes worked by themselves without any events on top of them, lol. :D
My unofficial rating of this lvl would be 3.5 or something. :D
My first level was alot worse, it was made in somewhere early 1999/or late 1998. i dont remember exact day :P
My first level was about this quality.
Lol my first one: DX WALLCLIMB LVL or MOONLIGHT OF DX {DC} they sux.
This level is made by Labratkid and it`s his best Single player level in my opinion, Why? read on.
Gameplay: rating: 9.0
When you start the game you start in a dark spaceship. It`s not all that special just collect, shoot, jump and destroy some trigger crates. Although it`s not really specail there are some small things that makes the level more fun then the original levels like a suckertube shoots you of and you land in another suckertube. To make it even more fun there are Spikebolls in the spaceship. When you get out of the ship the gameplay changes in a more fun and special gameplay. You will be launched into space and as far as I understand from it Jazz can fly. What you need to do is brake a number of triggercrates inside spaceships that`s spreat out in space. The good thing about this is that is isn`t linear at that moment and that`s a really good thing. All the spaceships have different things like different enemies in each ship (monkeys in space lol). When you destroyed all the crates you will get warped into a big spacship. I really wanted a checkpoint on that moment and yes there it is. Labratkid didn`t want us to get bored and maked a nice spring attraction. Cool!! Then it`s nothing special anymore just shoot a couple of turtles. Then Devan appears and you have to fight him.
Leveldesign: rating: 8.5
The leveldesign is really good and believeble. The spaceships are mostly designed like narrow corridors and thats good. The spaceships also have sideways what makes it more believeble and fun. Also the leveldesign isn`t flat and that`s makes the gameplay better too. The spaceships have shapes that`s believeble and really don`t look like boring square plains but really cool. The leveldesign is logic and understandeble for the players. Secrets are also on logic places. Don`t know much more.
Placement: rating: 8.0
Let`s start with the enemy placement, The enemy placement is quite good. The enemy`s arent just randomly throwen in to the level but on logical places. For example in space it`s full of floating suckers and in and on the ship there are turtles. There are many types of enemies used what keeps the level interesting. Ok now let`s talk about the goodies/food placement. THe goodies/food are nicely placed and spreat out in the level. I didn`t had the felling that there should be more goodies/food and didn`t had the feeling there should less goodies/food. The goodies/food is placed on places where it should be. The goodies/food aren`t only placed on easy place sometimes you have to look or go another sideway in for goodies and that`s good. Hmmmm…. That`s about it right? No! I forget something, The springs. The springs are very well placed they are placed where they really are useful or even for fun!!! That`s it.
Eyecandy: rating: 8.5
I think eyecandy is really importent in levels and I am glad the eyecandy is good in this level. First of all the stars are really nice and ain`t looks like just stars in 1 line but looks 3d in my opinion because there is another layer used for stars with a different speed. The stars are also moving which give the felling the ships are really moving nice. Enough about space let`s talk about the spaceships. The spaceships looks really nice from inside because there are Many windows and shadows are used. There are many beautiful animation and the level looks even more better thanks to the gorgous lights. Also layer 3 is used very well. I haven`t seen 1 tilebug in the level. That`s about it.
Extra stuff:
-Easy, normal, hard mode(+ 0.2).
Final rating: 9.0+8.5+8.0+8.5=34->-> 34:4=8.5+0.2= 8.7

Some people got out of memory errors when beta testing, too. I never had a problem myself, though. Just close JJ2 and then open it again, and see if that works. It’s a big level – 425×64.
Hi!
I’m too lazy to write a long review, so I’ll keep it short. I really like this conversion. I started to make a level, and after a minute I knew a story. :)
Well, I decided to make a level pack and the first level will be with this conversion from lil Labratkid. :D
The tiles are converted very well, and Labratkid added some useful things like slopes and a funny guy which head you can shoot. :)
Also, there is a sky texture, which let’s you create outdoor passages.
I WON’T rate the example level (tough I don’t understand why people always come and punish me when I do..), but it doesn’t work as well, because there’s something done wrong with the triggers. Tough, I like the Randomizer idea.
However, good work from LRK and worth downloading. The only thing I dislike is that the shadows are a bit hard to use (until you got out how they work).
I think I’ll give this a 7.7, it would be higher, but I wished there would be more new tiles..
Pretty good conversion, except animation of lamp, which has missing frames. Nothing else missing, and LRK even made slopes.
PHT : No, Lego man with shootable head was actually included in Bloxonius, as he was supposed to be living guy despite being motionless, like those ones in toy planes.
Also, rating example levels is forbidden on J2O, I think. (Triggers work fine for me, though)[This review has been edited by Cooba]
I need to review more. Whatever. Anyways, I played duke nukem 2 a lot of times when I was a kid (though only shareware) and I am glad you decided to convert it (even though it might’ve been partially because I was bugging you to). Most things from the jail are here, except the pipe tiles (around 4, 43 in JCS) are done poorly. They should either have been redone with a brick backround that actually blends in with the rest, or redone simply without the brick backround (the 2nd is easier). I like how you made the destruct blocks and poles blend in with the tileset, although I think this might’ve needed some hurt events, sucker tubes etc. Sad that you could only do the jail scenario from DN2, although the whole thing definately would’nt have fit (might even not have fit for TSF as well). Invisible tiles are there. yay. So are a bunch of stuff. Final verdict: Good conversions, needs a fex minor fix0ring in some places, and don’t hesitate to add more tiles if you ever decide to work on this more. I’ll try to finish the Duke nukem 2 example level for this someday, but it might only be playable in Coop online (A lot of my SP levels are ruined/hindered by the fact that coins turn to gems after you enter a coinwarp in singleplayer).
Rating time =D:
Conversion Completeness (considering the fact this is only suppose to be a conversion of the tileset for the first level in EP1 in DN2): 9
Tiles Added: 7.3
Animations: (No new ones, and the acid drop thing should’ve been better done. It looks very choppy and doesn’t tile good with the sewage thing. Which makes it look out of place and mostly unusable. Bah): 7 (I was nice ;o)
Color/Palette/Stuff: 8.5
Userfriendliness: 8.7
Overall (not an average): 8.4 (<3 DN2)
Final Rating Comes down to: 8.15 = 8.2. Solid good conversion, but you might’ve slacked off a bit in fix0ring it up/adding more tiles. You have rux conversion skills, but need to stop rushing things so they get released earlier. The half scale version of the set is also nicely done, but it reminds me of sets like Lost Viking by Jaws, and it makes jazz look a bit to big so I doubt most people would use it. Anyways, <3 at DN2 and thanks for succumbing to my endless requests for you converting this. I should’ve rated this sooner ;| and download reccomendation. <DukeNukem23333333333333333
VERY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
I Will Give This A 10
Sounds good. Review later, since i’m downloading Rhino3D and it’s 24.2 MB, which’ll take an hour on my n00bshop 56k.
-ThO
i really like new versions of old jazz2 tilesets and this one looks really good too!
my rating 8/10!
(Unsupported rating removal. What makes this good? Any faults? Any suggestions? ~Violet)[This review has been edited by Violet CLM]
R3ptile, you can see the background I used in the example level several times. In the level there are occasional “splits” in the bricks where you can see layer 8 through them. Also, putting the black tiles in layer 8 would make it so they were all unmasked, and would possibly mess up the level. Feel free to look at my level in JCS if you need help; there’s no password.
Very Good Tileset And Level Labratkid!
Duke Nukem Was A Dos Game And The Level
