And I was the one who was watching while he made that. It was really fun.
About the level: it took us longer to make than we expected at first, maybe that's because we put more time into the eye candy than planned. We had some funny ideas (like the TNT in the tree) and I think we both did as much. The idea of starting with a weapon was made up by Crimiclown. We didn't know that the platform lift didn't work in Multiplayer, but we found that out when we first hosted the level. I did most of the eye candy, but Crimiclown helped me a bit with finding the right tiles and such. He also made most of the background and the ammo placement. Anyway, have fun with the level!

That picture gives the image that one can shoot the full carrot into a pit, thus 'eliminating' it from gameplay. This would be a huge flaw.
Otherwise, good job, but there are some small detail problems and other nitpicky stuff.
But not bad for a relatively inexperienced levelmaker.

Odin answered this partly, the other reason is that CryssilisV doesn't have the tiles necessary to make this level. Odin was right though, it would probably be rushed work.

It's called EYECANDY. Without it, it would be like it was almost no level at all. And tell me how it could make the gameplay worse.

I get into some arguements, but I'm not THAT easily offended. Anyways, what I meant by my post was that there was too much eyecandy, and you see the eyecandy before you see the level. To make better eyecandy, dim it with transclucent blackness, so you can see it, but it's not distracting or painful to the eyes. Luckily, yours isn't the latter. It makes gameplay worse because it redirects your concentration to the awkward rays of colour. Not a real problem, but it can be improved.

I'd be carefull with using that amount of Water in that level, since movement in it is very slow and limiting, and it's a lot harder to aim/dodge bullets. While the idea may fit with the theme you're aiming for, but when the level gets put into practise players will probably be annoyed by the generally slow gameplay, and not have an enjoyable time playing.
Water can be put to good use if the level is made so that players aren't forced to use it to get from base to base, instead they only need to use it as an extra route which could provide them with some advantages strategically than if they took the faster route(s).
Just keep this in mind.
Forgive me if I made any typing mistakes, I'm in a bit of a hurry.

In gameplay probably yes, but I am way more into playing the oldies 'n' goodies for various teamgames and such. I don't mind seeing new CTFs in some public servers (hell, I love it), but still, I am way more into battle now. The lava doesn't fit, it needs more depth and/or detail and a slight color change. I love how the sewers look. The palette makes the city part look ugly though.
EvilMike
Apr 26, 2008, 11:52 PM
I like the overall look of those screenshots. You're right that the lava looks wrong though. It's way too bright or something, also why is there a giant waterfall of lava in the middle of a city in the first place?
PurpleJazz
Apr 26, 2008, 11:57 PM
I originally added the blood falls to try and give the level a more "devastated" feel, although I agree with you about the fact that they do look a little strange with this tileset. These ones are only temporary until I make some new ones from scratch, and/or edit the palette. I'll also probably use them in the sewers only.
About the city palette, I intentionally made the palette look dull as it supports the atomsphere. I might change this though.
EDIT: Better?

EvilMike
Apr 27, 2008, 01:05 AM
If you want a sort of waterfall that fits in a bit better, I suggest dirty water. Some sort of brown, or muddy blue colour would work. Lava/blood is more dramatic and all, but it really does not fit the theme. You kind of need everything to be on fire for that to work.

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/5548/jazz0009uj7.pngThe fence behind the gate looks too artificial. The palette changes are good though more contrast is needed (Nick Stadler never used simple generated gradients himself). I like how the sprites turned out.

Apr 27, 2008, 02:40 AM
Or you can replace the black shading in the waterfall with yellowish grey, making it look like, well, pee and slime.
Oh, also, I liked the red clothes, the new palette change makes the fencer looks rotten.

The only thing preventing me from enjoying the screenshots are the waterfalls.

I know, these are a little bit out of place; I was pretty tired at the time of making this, and a little rushed, so I didn't really put in enough logical thinking I admit. However, quite a few major changes have been made since then and these problems are no longer present. I'm now using different waterfalls, ones which don't look as ugly.
Violet CLM
Apr 28, 2008, 03:51 PM
The reason those waterfalls, or the ones that were popular a while back with other tileset conversions, or basically any waterfall in any tile ever, do look "ugly as sin" is because they have nothing to do with the perspective of the tileset they're in. JJ2 uses a much more complex graphic style than JJ1 and that lesson is not being learned in this one crucial field. Compare the water pools from Jungle and, in fact, Colonius - they're not flat and full-tile. In JJ1 they would be, but this isn't JJ1. I've used this example before, but <a href="http://www.bghq.com./bgs.php?system=psx&game=m/mmx4&mode=web">here</a>'s what waterfalls (and heck, water in general) should look like in an isometric game like JJ2.
n00b
Apr 28, 2008, 04:16 PM
I wasn't even thinking of perspective. I was more concerned with the fact that its an extremely horrendous gradient that doesn't match the style (which kind of includes perspective too, I guess) of the rest of the set.

Raven aka StL
May 2, 2008, 03:03 PM
It's in fact more logical for distant background objects to be light than dark, because of fog/distance fog.
Then again, if it's real damn far away, it could just as well be dark, but on the other hand it's a nice and much underused style to make it light.
Alas, that's about the only thing worth a compliment about those pics.
Valco
May 2, 2008, 04:28 PM
If those mutated skulls were used as torches elsewhere, that would be cool. Unfortunately the tileset won't support that, and to me it just looks wierd how it is now. Besides that, I don't see any other real problems in the screenshot.

All the levels are sort of done, but i'm now i am 'updating' them because they suck or the eyecandy is horrible. The best thing to do is go to this page http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/ and at the top tell it to filter single player levels, and sort by rating. There's a whole ton of quality stuff.
I also run a blog where I do occasional updates featuring single player levels. A lot of great levels are not featured on it though, so I recommend searching on J2O if you want the widest selection.

They're not tests. To be a test, it'd have to use clashing, ugly, out of place looking warptiles and every single test would have to be "Make it past the warptiles!" or some variant of that sort despite the fact, nowhere else in JJ2's myraid of gametypes do you ever do these sorts of things, except maybe the RF jumping, thus making it worst application of the word "test" ever.

I don't know why I'm making Christmas levels early...
<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc140/jimbobjj2/Jimbobunholynight1.png?t=1216473427">
Anyways, this is expected to be the second level in a small pack of three CTF levels. I haven't started on the third one yet, but I have finished the first one already and I think this level is turning out very well so far.
Quite an original style of eyecandy, I think.
Hey buddy save it for xmas

Well, if you're using a Christmas tileset that doesn't have to mean that it's made for it. But it's still kinda strange.. anyway, I'd like to make some more levels but I can't find a tileset. So make more tilesets!!1 (yes, that was a joke)

Also, if you're in that level for a considerable amount of time, shouldn't THAT much rain add up to a really high amount and cause Jazz to drown from some.. typhoon flood? We wouldn't want that would we... We only have him and Spaz. Not Lori because we be living in a male dominated society. *Man voice* Yah. Patriarchal. Anyway, there's not even a carrot to keep Jazz happy that he's gonna drown very soon... Poor Jazz... What if the fire gets him first? :(

I'm working on a large - size battle map good for 10-25 players. It is called Exodus Peak. It is a mountain top that has been industrialized with skyscrapers, etc. I have hosted it a couple of times on Bob's Server. It needs a substantial amount of work but due to peoples requests for the map i might release a pre-release version.
hahahah @iconguy's post
I will leave the rain out :P

It is called Exodus Peak.
Bah, that makes 3 levels with 'Exodus' in the name. :/

You shouldn't use foreground tiles in the background. Otherwise not bad.
Well, some slight tile-bugs, but that's nothing.

So I just recently finished, or at least 99% done, Castle of Mysteries. It uses Blades newest set, Fortress of Forgotton Souls. Quite a hard one to learn. And pretty tough to build Eyecandy in the brick tiles. Anyway, here's a few shots of the recent level.

The last picture has a nice impression of spaz acting like a retard. Anyway, as for the rest of the pack, I'm not sure if I'll be continuing this pack, meaning, it will only contain thr 4 levels it has now. But I'll be starting in a new genre of level making, not CTF or Battle anymore, but Flag run and Assault and a few others for JDC events and things like that. But if I do change my mind, you might see one more level in this pack, if not, exspect a release in late August.

Hitch: why are you using the background bricks on layer 3? Otherwise it looks good even if the walls need work.
Dx: interesting take on Carrotus there.

It's hard to create eyecandy in the bricks, I thought the black made a nice touch to it, though it's just me.

I don't, hills should be built with filled tiles (FILLED I TELL YOU!!). And these rooms remind me of crappy hotel rooms that are linked with warps.

I'm pretty impressed by the Carrotus pictures Dx, but what Iconguy said made me think about something... The logs look like they've intentionally been placed by someone but yet there is a load of moss or leaves and vines all over the place- Looks unreal to me. Not like it matters, it still looks good. One thing I dislike however is that the logs bend (which I dont think I've ever seen in real life, baring in mind that this is a game still) and that they aren't very well separated from eachother, at least you thought about supporting them with vertical logs. ;P On a sidenote, it does look as if there are little rooms, except that's not a bad thing.
(I feel like I just rambled on pointlessly, it looks good. ;o)

My only problem with it is the minimalistic background and middleground tiles clashes on occasion with the cluttered and messy-feeling foreground tiles. Its most apparent to me as feeling 'off' in these (http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/573/screen1to4.png) two (http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/4011/screen4io6.png) screens.
The one where Jazz is on a vine hook and the vines fill up the areas between the other hooks looks extremely great and is an exception to what I mentioned.
Reminds me of you ;).
There has never been a post on this forum more worthy of a high-five than this one.
