No, you don't get to know what it is. When it's done.

Well, it's not FooMerge because FooMerge <i>doesn't have all those tiles</i>. Anyone who doubted Cooba could have checked that.

The eyecandy is great.
It may be mentioned before, but what are this going to be for battle, ctf, I guess sp?

DarkSonic

The first 3 screenshots are from a Battle level, the other 3 from a CTF level. In total there will probably be 3 CTF levels and 2 Battle levels, which I nearly finished(only need musics for the levels)

Anyway, I need tips on what color the background should be (let it stay orange or not?) and if those blue things look good or something... I dunno. Also, the level is nowhere near finished. The only thing finished is the left top corner.

JanusJackrabbit

They contrast nicely, but I think the ground tiles are a little too intense for my shade of orange. The eyecandy looks great.

Yes, but the others are a little bit less bright, but then they blend in with the background too much, or the blue things are just way too dark (dark red), compared to the rest of the level.

Fawriel
Nov 18, 2006, 11:42 PM
Hmm... with such powerful colors in the foreground, I don't think strong background color is needed... in fact, the contrast may be a little painful on the eye ( I say that a lot, eh? ). May be. Try simple white or grey. Something dim.

Or replace it with better rain.

Nov 23, 2006, 12:47 PM
Yes, you can see the bullets.

You don't like the rain? :| But there's thunder, too!

Just for you I'll make a Fawriel version without rain. ;P

Fawriel

Hmmm, especially compared to the rest of the set, the rain seems cartoony, unrealistic and just too simple. Single drops. And raindrops aren't even shaped like that, I believe. Thunder in levels also tends to look kind of cheesy..................
You'd have to prove me that it doesn't look as bad as I picture it in practice.

Already done, Sacrush suggested that and the bricks in the clouds.

The purple cloud is on layer three and moves at 1.1 speed so it looks better when playing than in this picture. It covers the edges of the level. (except the middle bottom)

@Snooze. That's a really odd use of Tarzan's Treetops xD It'll be nice to play when it's finished.

@Spaz. The level could use some eyecandy IN the ground tiles (the green/black ground tile seems repetitive). Just throw in some platforms in layer 3. That should work. It could use a lot more enemies and goodies to keep the player busy.

I notice you have a timer in this screenshot, no doubt using animated tiles. Please keep in mind that animations start from frame 1 when the level is loaded in JCS, but they start at a more or less random frame when started in jj2.

Yes, I have kept that in mind, that's why I have put in a small area to wait for the timer to reset. The blocks above the "wait here" do not disappear.

EvilMike
Dec 17, 2006, 05:57 PM
I actually agree that a "natural" themed tileset ought to have levels using more slopes. A more "man-made" themed one should probably have a flatter, more streamlined design which has a logical element to it. A castle level should feel like a castle as a whole, and not just look like one because you used the tileset. But then again, I'm a strong believer in making levels that follow a sort of theme like that. This only applies to single player though.

Overuse is a term thats relative to how many recent levels are uploaded with the set. If it was the hottest thing in 2004 that shouldn't put some weird random limit to people using the set now (Note- random example btw).
Unfinished levels should not mean (-), they're unfinished, some (-) can still come in and complain the set is overused and that they need to start over.

DarkSonic
Dec 28, 2006, 01:38 PM
Man, will you ever stop answering everything I post? I mean, if I think Odyssey is overused that's a fact in my opinion. Although some people might disagree. Before Snooze made Galactic Warfare almost no-one used it, and right after it people started to use it. There might still be original things to do with the tileset though.

Here are screenshots of levels from Impressions so far.

http://img351.imageshack.us/img351/8788/xlmimpres4ng9.th.png (http://img351.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xlmimpres4ng9.png)

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3466/xlmimpres5jk4.th.png (http://img146.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xlmimpres5jk4.png)

http://img351.imageshack.us/img351/5183/xlmimpres6wb0.th.png (http://img351.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xlmimpres6wb0.png)

So that means 2 levels to go. And with the speed that I work with lately, it shouldn't take too long to make those. And for the people who don't know what the tilesets are:

1: JJ1 Exoticus
2: Glacier
3: Wasteland
4: (-) + Hot
5: Inferno 2.0 Fire
6: BioCorridor 1.26

No don't.
Why, because the idea is corny?

And about that tileset-overusage discussion: This level will be part of a pack, so I don't see any reason why the tileset used in my level could possible be annoying if it was overused. One level in a pack of 6 or more doesn't set the tileset as the main one...

R3ptile
Dec 29, 2006, 02:49 AM
Well it's alright to use an overused tileset, but keep in mind that since there are so many levels using it you'll have to come up with something different or else rating points would be heavily decreased.

n00b

Strato
Dec 29, 2006, 08:57 AM
I think that the real problem with tileset overusage is actually a lack of originality. I mean, if you've played a hundred levels with the Carrotus tileset and you make a level with that, about 95% of the time you'll end up subconciously taking ideas from the 100 levels before you. And if you make a new and original twist on an old tileset, it tends to have a certain "Wow!" factor. Unfortunantly, it quickly gets knocked off and becomes an overused aspect of levels.

Think about it this way: The biggest victim of overusing is any Epic tileset. However, one of our best rated levels, Termite Heaven features HUGELY original eye candy. Combined with solid gameplay, it becomes an instant winner.

An overused tileset can't break a level if it's of quality. Nuff said.

Well it's alright to use an overused tileset, but keep in mind that since there are so many levels using it you'll have to come up with something different or else rating points would be heavily decreased.
Only one (1) level will use that tileset!

If Chandie can use the castle and carrotus tilesets in a unique way that people enjoy, I don't see why no one else can.

I don't like the placement of the bushes, or there are too many, but the rest looks great =)

DiamB isn't that hard. Try using something like Arkansas properly.

Well, I was trying to use Arkansas but I cancelled it.. it was too boring in my opinion. Now I'm trying JJ1 Holidaius for the seventh level from Impressions. And Sacrush: I have said it last time as well, but it looks very nice. And it's a very big level, that takes lots of time to make.

Its like 85% complete. And yes it's a big level, It's already 38kb.

DiamB isn't hard, but it gets arduous to make eyecandy on that scale.

I agree, the bushed seem a little clustered.

I sort of regret starting the whole bush placement standard for diamb. Well done and respect on the amount of work you spent on that sacrush, but honestly, you and everyone else should try alternative uses with that set already.

I actually did had another idea for the walls Eyecandy but the level was too much in progress to let all of that work go undone, I don't even know if it would look good too, that's why I kept the bushes.

Nevertheless, you get farther in life (and jcs) by trying new things.
