Since when can you drown?

EvilMike
Dec 13, 2008, 11:40 PM
You can be slowed down by water and be unable to reach the blocks you need gun 6 to destroy before the water reaches them. That's how you drown. You drown on FRUSTRATION.

what's wrong with jj1 tilesets? the concept evilmike tells us completely fits with the set.

Poor tileset choice, in my opinion. Interesting level, though.

Yeah because a level themed around raising/lowering water levels using a jj1 tileset from a level built around the same concept is definitely a bad idea.

The jj1 version of dreempipes is better than the IC one (the remake), though I would say both are decent. Even cooba admits that. JJ1 dreempipes is hard to use, but if you use it right it looks good, and that's all that matters.

Any idea about the release?
The episode is still a long way from being finished. My plan for a while has been to release it in the first half of 2009. More specific than that, I cannot say. Hopefully it will come out before a year passes from the release of the previous episode.

The jj1 version of dreempipes is better than the IC one (the remake), though I would say both are decent. Even cooba admits that. The Dreempipes remake I'd committed about two years ago is unsightly and useless and I don't understand anyone who uses more of its tiles than the rocks (which I'm kinda fond of). :(

(This calls for a meta-remake!)

Well, I thought that because you're using it for the main level in episode five I couldn't bother using it. But because I suddenly got some EC ideas with the set I decided to use it.

The eye candy might be a bit confusing, but all tiles in layer 5 and 6 are unmasked (except a few in layer 5 but those are in the walls) I think I will finish this level today or tomorrow.

Now it seems that the second screenshot doesn't work anymore. Anyway:

Emp: those buildings in the walls are in layer 5. Layer 6 and 7 contain a lot of buildings. But I understand what you mean; it might look confusing so I'll put something else in the walls.

EM: that was the level in an early state. The level is pretty big and open. The EC might be a bit random in the walls. But I'll have something to show when the level is done (that could take a while)

Well I've been working on something in particular the past week. Had a little trouble in the beginning, but after that bump in the road, it was pretty smooth. This project took about 5 hours overall, and yes, It's done. Now what game type could it possibly be? I'll give a hint, it's not ctf. Now if you know what I've been building please do not give away the game mode, but as for everyone else, let the guessing begin!

Picture one: Nothing special. Start room?
http://imagespark.net/files/xlmbrg01.png

Picture two: Still nothing. A carrot? Some sucker tubes? That's obviously the middle... Or is it?
http://imagespark.net/files/xlmbrg02.png

Picture three: Well that's interesting. Power up room?
http://imagespark.net/files/xlmbrg0324.png

Picture four: The last of them. Believe it or not, this gives it away, if you can find what I'm talking about ;)
http://imagespark.net/files/xlmbrg04.png

As for the level itself, not sure what I'll be doing with it. Maybe I'll be adding it to Memories 3? Or maybe not. Maybe I'll upload it by itself. This will have to take some thinking.

Take a look at the scrolling bars to imagine the size of the whole level. And it's gonna be adequately long in terms of gameplay, at least at first attemp - there are also a few speedrunning secrets and tricks just like in other levels to see how fast can you be. Just trying to make up for the long production time just a bit before everything's wrapped up. Plus I needed to fill in a hole in the storyline.

Well I've kept it a secret long enough. There will be a sequel to Memories 2: Radiant Garden. This one will be the 3rd... Memories 3: Imagination. Saying, it will be kept on a theme, 'futuristic' type levels. One for example, would be the pictures I posted early this past week. If you guessed Bank Robbery, your correct!

The pack will include the following: Flag Run x2, Assassination x2, Bank Robbery x1, and maybe a few others. All I can say now is, those game types will definitely be in the pack. Bank Robbery has already been created and finished, and one of the Flag Run levels, has been in progress for about 3 days now. (50% done)

I mainly choosed these types of game types mainly because JDC is in need for some new levels. I've had a little background knowledge in Flag run, but as for the others, none what so ever. But, that will change. I've studied how the system works for both Assassination and Bank Robbery, and overall, it's pretty simple to catch on to, if you know what to look for.

I can say this pack will finish a lot faster than the previous Memories, because I had so many delays, including after school clubs. That should not get in the way of this. I want to release this pack Near Late March. If I can't reach the deadline, It will most likely be around the beginning of June. Still not to bad right?

A pack with no Ctf/Battle levels... really?

EvilMike
Jan 13, 2009, 08:50 PM
You, sir, are a god among men.
Two weeks of work isn't all that surprising actually, since according to DoubleGJ it was spread out over a while. Assuming you only work on it an hour a day, that's 14 hours of work, and a person experienced with JCS can get A LOT done in that amount of time, especially with a good plan. If you look at that screenshot, the level (while gigantic) has a lot of solid walls and large cavernous spaces. This means layout-wise, the level probably isn't mind-bogglingly complex or anything. Also, you'll notice that much of the eyecandy is copied and pasted, which saves a lot of time (and this is a good thing, since it's only something you can notice when the level is zoomed out like that).

So in other words, it's a very impressive screenshot, but finding out that it is a product of two weeks of work is pretty normal. After all, the level isn't done yet, and it looks like it still needs pickups and enemies, and of course testing (which always takes forever because you have to play through the level like 100 times).

and a person experienced with JCS can get A LOT done in that amount of time, especially with a good plan.

Well, Snooze made a whole episode in 2 weeks. But he didn't have gigantic levels like the one from DoubleGJ. He had a few 'pretty big' levels though.

Anyway, my new level is about 75% done now. It took me about 1,5 week so far, but that's because I also played other games and I have tests this week. And I usually put a lot of eye candy in. I'm not easily satisfied. I already have plans for the other levels of my pack. But I don't think I'll have enough inspiration for making 8 levels. But you never know.

Same. Even with having my level (which I kinda forgot about) completely mapped out it took a good month to get it all into the JCS, and theres really not a lot going on in the layout. I think all of my walls are just one repeated tile that I intended to make look good later.

Getting back into JCS after a hiatus of about a year. First I finished a multiplayer level called 'The Belfry' I started making in December 2007. It was almost done, but I had to add just a few bits and pieces. It's a quite big level made with the castle night tileset. Its size and relatively large amounts of weapons and power-ups make it more suited for 4 or more players. It still looks a bit amateuristic but I think it's quite fun to play.

Then I started making a smaller level, called Fondle in the Jungle (yes, I know...), another multiplayer level, this time with a Jungle Night tileset. It looks quite well and it's a lot more professional and polished than my previous efforts. I finished it today after working quite intensively on it for a couple of days. It's a level with two sides, which are connected only by two pipes (like, the hollow three thingies), making every trip to 'the other side' quite risky. I like the concept and I think it worked out quite well.

Now I'm working on a third multiplayer level, just to complete some sort of multiplayer ring to play with my friends. It's a small level made with the labrat tileset (mainly so I can screw around with the tubes a bit), and it's supposed to become symmetric. I've only just started, so I don't know exactly how it'll turn out.

Yes, I personally find them all too dark. Borealis only provides the best contract between the normally solid and normally unmasked tiles, yet I still often find it hard to recognise the paths myself. I believe it would be optimal if all the background and layer 5 tiles would be made darker (or stay the same, if already dark enough) and the masked tiles (mostly the metallic ones) get a slight gamma-boost.

This level is very much a work in progress (only about 1/3 done) but it's going along well. This section of the level is more or less complete, but the eyecandy isn't finalized yet. Might keep it the way it is, might change the background a little.

Those rocks are floating on the green water, from left to right. It's a moving platform level. Blur made one years ago. This one is a bit different though, because the platform is bigger and it gets faster the further you go.

Also the level is like 900x50. Hooray for weird sizes.

900x50?! :O That is LONG!

I'm loving the use of the rocks in the water.
Are the Death Pits from JJ2+ gonna be used in Episode 5?

No JJ2+ features. The other 4 episodes are standard 1.23, so ep5 will also be 1.23. However, if I ever make any SP projects after this (which would be an entirely new thing, not an ep6, since 5 is the last one), I will probably use jj2+.

Also, 900 tiles is indeed long, but keep in mind the level is literally just one long horizontal path. There's very little up and down stuff, most of the vertical space is unused.

Do you reckon you could split up the boxes a little? They don't look good the way they are now.

The background also needs work, too, the black lines (tree tiles) in the background look like bugs in the screenshot. The background fade needs to go altogether.

Not going to split up the rocks. It does look a little weird when they are bunched together, but if I space them apart, what winds up happening is if you touch the sides of the platform, one of the rocks will fall. The way they are bunched up right now makes them "stuck together", so it is impossible to cause the platform to fall. This makes for better gameplay, which I think is the important thing.

Also, the platform spaces out a bit when the speed increases. The rocks there are moving at speed 2. At speed 3 they become normally spaced (but still impossible to push), making it the ideal speed in terms of looks. At speeds higher than 3, the platform stays solid, but it's spaced out enough that you can cause it to break. At higher than 5 (or maybe it's 6) the gaps become large enough to fall through, making that the maximum speed. If I made the blocks initially start farther apart, I'd be limited to a slower speed in other words.

As for the BG, it looks quite a bit better in motion, since it uses several layers. Most of the stuff you see there is layer 6, but there is some layer 5 in there as well. Easy to tell apart since they move at different speeds, but in a screenshot they blend together and it looks kind of odd. I agree on the black lines though, they are a bit too thin to look good.

As for the layer 8 fade, I'm still trying to find a colour that works good. I want to use a colour that's not found much in the tileset, to give the level a bit more visual flavour, but obviously it needs to be something that doesn't clash.

Raven aka StL
Feb 12, 2009, 04:06 PM
Holy smokes, that feels and sounds great.

And I request a red fade, a bit lighter than cherry.

The only even slightly buggy thing is the 'water', but that's a tileset defect, so it's easy to ignore.

I have a fear that the gameplay there is going to be almost entirely tunnely. Now that is at least a suitable amount of diamonds(or scenery in solid wall general). It though unreastically repeats itself a bit too much. I guess that the level name is quite relative to a DF song title. I appreciate it though, since I like naming some of my levels after songs too.

Jimbob

You simply have to calculate the number of tiles your level will have, and how many tiles you have already added. Then its a simple division problem and you know exactly what percent is done.

Well I've made up my decision on what to end up putting in the overall pack.

Finished:

Assault x1
Assassination x1
Bank Robbery x1
Flag Run x2

Working on

Jail Break

Addition to the pack

Battle x2
Gold Rush x2

Overall levels in the pack: 10

For your information, the Battle levels will have a Gold rush version, for an extra addition. Most likely, I'll be mixing up the Battle and Gold Rush levels, so there's something new to expect from each level. Since there's such a low quantity of Gold rush levels, I'd thought it would be a nice treat. And for the battle levels, we could always use more.

Now for some pictures!

http://imagespark.net/files/xlmm3jb01pict02.png

http://imagespark.net/files/xlmm3jb01pict03.png

So far, I've spent about 5-7 days on this. It's almost finished, just have to figure out how I want the center to look like. Other than that, it's nearly complete. I'm so used to Symmetrical levels, it's takes nearly half a day for me to complete the other side. After finishing this level, I'm going to take a break for a bit. I got back into playing Tennis, and made the team, so I'll be doing that quite a lot, (4-6 hours a day.. I try) Though when I get home, and there's nothing to do, I can always open JCS and let my mind flow. Anyway, it's not that far from releasing this pack. Expect <s>a release this weekend</s> early may ... at the latest.

Those two pedestal like things are switches. There are 4 doors (2 on left, 2 on right). These switches will open 2 doors and close the other 2.

The layer 3 bricks look out of place and obscure the view. In contrast, the bricks above and below are too bland. Focus more on layer 4 eyecandy and less on layer 3. Try to obstruct the player's view as little as possible, especially in multiplayer levels.

Actually, that's just a J1E bug. It actually is correct in game.

The background color is a gradient of light blues, greens and yellows. I picked it because there's no way I'm ever going to be able to replicate the original Carrotus background. Anyone who is interested in the tileset can just mail me though, and I will send it over.

I mostly like the color of the bg (behind the windows). It may be little, but seems to really make the atmosphere. Putting more focus on that aspect is my suggestion.

EvilMike
Apr 29, 2009, 11:09 PM
Your use of colour is very good but I would actually suggest changing the background behind the windows somewhat. The colour is good, but if you look closely you will see it has a "checkerboard" pattern when it comes to the individual pixels. This may look fine in a cropped screenshot like that, but played in full screen patterns like that can become rather ugly.

Stijn
Apr 30, 2009, 01:51 AM
It has a checkerboard pattern because it's a textured background with a transparent yellow tile over it, on a screenshot from JCS ;)

There's two separate textured backgrounds available in the set plus a few single-color tiles that can be used for overlays, so it should easily be possible to make a background like that in-game too.

Violet: thanks, but that might be a bit too much credit for me. While I've left very few tiles untouched, most of this is still taken from various Waz sets. The set began as an updated version of Waz 11, but though the bulk of the set is still from there I've included some things from his other sets (for example the curtains) too.

EvilMike

Oh I see. It must be an 8 bit mode screenshot then. Textured BGs don't really do that in 16 bit as far as I know.

Waz is kind of interesting because he made so many tilesets, and a number of them are pretty good, but none of them got higher than 8 on j2o. Also he made most of them for tsf, which doesn't help. Definitely one of the more underrated tileset makers.

Stijn
Apr 30, 2009, 03:44 AM
Yeah, I guess JCS's preview rendering uses that instead of JJ2's render style for whatever reason.

I converted all of Waz's sets to 1.23 a while ago, I just don't know what the best way to upload them would be.

EvilMike
Apr 30, 2009, 08:48 AM

Ohhhh I see. It's a JCS screenshot. In that case the effect is from something entirely different. JCS does not render transparency. Instead it just removes half the pixels so you can see through it.

As for the best way to upload the tilesets, I recommend simply putting them in a zip file and sticking it on j2o as one big pack. And it would probably be a good idea to set the upload to not accept reviews, and instead tell people to rate the individual tilesets that were uploaded by Waz himself. And if you want to put in extra effort, you can link to all the individual uploads in the download info.

I think uploading in this way would be fair. I think it would be a good idea to upload them too.

This looks like a good tileset, and I like the hand drawn look, but those blue-ish background tiles might be a bit problematic. If you look at the green rocks that stand out, you'll see they form a sort of grid pattern. Also, the contrast is fairly high, and it can be seen that it is just one tile repeating over and over. I would suggest adding more tiles so the BG is more natural looking.

Now that I think of it, the same applies to the leaf texture in the first screenshot. There is a grid of large oval shaped leaves (two in each tile) which stands out. Again, more variation would solve the issue.

It's getting dangerously close to being finished. Only six levels left to finish (out of like 20), and two of them are mostly done already. The only major level I have left to make from scratch is the final boss level (which I'm not looking forward to, and I might resort to recycling an unreleased level instead of making a new one). The other three are tiny levels I can complete in one day probably.

Still got a fair amount of work ahead though. Writing is done, but I gotta make the tilesets for cutscenes still, plus a full fledged credits level, picking music, and of course testing.
