I like the looks of it, but water is utterly annoying when playing.

More like utterly boring. If someone found a way to make an interesting SP water level and not outright copy "Generic water level" (or whatever Epi] ended up calling it), then that person would be the greatest jj2 level maker ever.
EDIT- Seriously, for the last time Jimbob, make the inner ledge things look natural. Its not rocket science, hell, its the easiest form of eyecandy in the tileset.

And I got an important question! Some level holds a little bigger violence like gallows(you know hanged toads!) and other that kind of stuff, is it allowed or I should remove those? If not should I put at its download something like holds aggressive objects, not recommended under 12 years. They are not brutal really, they more like pretty funny but I thought I should write about it.

Please say something about it

It's not a big deal.

Could you say what exactly is wrong with the eye candy? I can take a guess by saying that there are too many of those green things like in the first screenshot. I will add eye candy in the walls later.

@Darksonic: I liked the walltunnelcolorstuff, but oh well. Is it using Crystal Cages or you got something else?

DarkSonic
Sep 17, 2007, 09:35 AM
Yes, I'm using Crystal Cages. I think I'll just remove some of that stuff, and see what other things I can do with the set. The eye candy may be a bit repetitive already.

Uhh, I'm sorry to say this, but I dunno why, I loaded my level and I clicked cancel when it asked me for the pass. I went File-->New and I picked a tileset, added a textured background and I saved it and ran. It saved that over my level. So it is no more. :(:(:(
I was lucky to make a video of the layout, so you guys know what it looked like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmA_VSFL-TU
I am going to build a different level using the Big Landscape tileset tho.
Any ideas for names?

Looks pretty nice, Fjol, although the ground looks pretty bland (good you used some variation though :)). Use some flower-in-the-ground blocks?

Also there's a really ugly tilebug to the left. You might want to correct it because it looks bad.

Ooookay... Map or scrap? If map, this will end up in Double Pack no. 2, 3 or 4. I'm guessing the later numbers because this level is pretty big and the symmetry and stuff will take a while. On this pic you can see a bit of the top left engine.

DarkSonic
Sep 20, 2007, 03:17 AM
I'd say map, but I hope it's not a dead end there.. oh well, the eye candy looks a bit interesting.

about 'Uber Marsh CTF' I like the background but the eye candy could definitely be better. About 'It's Darn Cold' 's layout: I don't really like it, it's big and platformy.

And what FS said about Phoenix' level is true. The base placement is almost the same, but I don't know if this level is symmetrical.

Eigus
Sep 20, 2007, 03:21 AM
This is a very early version of the map. There is very little done. Yes, ATM it's a dead end, but later I'll probably change it in a O-like track so you can immediately grab the PU and get back to flagging.

...Guess what is the tileset.

(know it? don't say what it is but say you know it ;p)

Tilebug? The far left grass tile? 'Jeroen's Smiley'?

Eigus
Sep 20, 2007, 09:43 AM
You know, the place where the ground/wall tile doesn't connect with the grass one. A solution may be placing a wall tile on BG layer 5 or something.

Grass-in-the-ground tiles are those in the basic block of tiles with a grassflower thing. They look nice and add variety. ;) At least for me.

Jeroen's Smiley = jt_smily.xm. You know, this music file I suggested.

It isn't really that much of a dead end actually, because there isn't really a specific path that leads to the red base. That area above there is the coin warping area for your team.

As you can see, I like putting up some of the pickups before the level's layout is done.
Ammo That I decided to use in my level:
Seekers, Bouncers, RF's and toasters.
The powerup for the red team is the toasters, and the powerup for the blue team is (haven't decided yet, but it's probably gonna be either RF's or Seekers. :<nothing here="">p</nothing here>)
As you can also see, I changed the textured background to a slightly more blue-ish shade of Grey (that fits my level more imo).

Eigus
Sep 24, 2007, 12:27 AM
It was supposed to be a dead-end, but there is a tube sticking out now (which kinda denies the name but everything else is pretty much natural) that is actually a warp with multiple warp targets so you don't must backtrack through the base's corridor.

@Darksonic: Looks very nice. Music chosen? XD yes, I'm a freak. Heck, that was my user title a bit back. 'music freak'.

DarkSonic
Sep 24, 2007, 12:33 AM

Eigus
Sep 24, 2007, 12:41 AM
Shop.it is just a cut-off version of Carrotus Forest from JJ3. Shop begins from the pizzicatos, which is far after the start of Carrotus Forest. Go use Carrotus Forest, it would fit very nicely ;)

Music for Naturals is chosen too. It's "Epic" by Deebor. Long tune I got not that long ago I think from Modarchive. Go check it out if you want :D

I have been inactive for about 3 months but I will start making some more levels in the next few months. Coming soon in 2008, I'll be making Memories 2: Radiant Garden. It will be a pack of 6 levels that will all be related to castle tilesets. I haven't got much inspiration right now but I'm brainstorming the ideas in my head. So in 2008, hopefully before March, I'll relase the new pack, Memories 2: Radiant Garden.

Looking pretty sweet so far, doesn't it? :p
As you can see, the layout of the level is really hilly. :p
It's been going really slow. :p
Btw, the coin warps cost 100 coins each and I made it (with a little use of some trigger zones and warps near the start position) so that the people on the red team cannot get to the blue team's coin warp, and vice versa. :p
EDIT: I must say, I think this level has very much potential to be a really good level (by me, that is, not like birdie or anyone else, just by me). :p

Violet once gave me the subtle hint that trigger zones only work locally. You have to use crates...

Violet CLM
Oct 3, 2007, 01:18 PM
No, them being local is the point. Team-specific triggers - trigger zones that are only gone over by members of one team - have to be trigger zones, or otherwise both teams would have Red triggers, or both have Blue triggers, whichever. This feels like a really bad explanation somehow but trigger zones are what are appropriate here.

cooba
Oct 6, 2007, 11:58 AM
Original as it may be, mixing the types of ammo pickups in one ammo shape isn't generally a good idea. Plus, the shape doesn't fit to its place, as it's more or less rectangular, while placed close to a sloped passage.

Why are your ceilings straight lines? Work on them, give them little bumps, stalactice-esque formations, etc. Same with the caves (particularly on the right).

Hello, everyone! This is the very first time I’ve posted, so let’s start it out with a bang, shall we?

I am 99.9% finished with my single player episode pack. I have been building it for nearly one and a half years, on and off. I was building it for fun, originally, and when I found this site about a month ago it really motivated me to get the levels done. Anyway, my pack is ten levels long, not including the credits, which will be coming. Tilesets include: MegaM123, MegaM123N, Credits, (called E.E.H. ending credits – forgot where it came from) Desert, Top3, and Heaven. The music files I have included are: hgh-will.xm, m04.mod, empty4st.xm, fyingIndian.S3m, Haunted.it, rba-psys.xm, and finally, organic.xm.

I created a new kind of story, and it does not have anything to do with Devan at all. I don’t want to spoil it, though, so all I’m going to say is that the game will be slightly different depending on whether you play as Jazz or Spaz. Something happens to your brother (the character you didn’t select to play), and that is what the rest of the story is based on. I have utilized the separate Jazz/Spaz start points to make the story fit with each character.

All I need to do is play through all of the levels to see which ones you can save in (three are quite large), and my pack will be ready for beta-testing! So if anyone would like to have their name in the credits and be eternally in my debt (maybe) please post your thoughts and I can work out getting the levels to you. Thanks!
I hope you are as excited about this as I am!!

P.S. If you guys would tell me how to put screenshots up there I will gladly oblige.

Aeris
Oct 14, 2007, 03:55 PM
Well, I’m finished with everything! I played once through with both Jazz and Spaz. The levels all work great and every level is save-able. They seemed big while I was making them, but now that I look at devres23, I see that they are not big at all :)

So who wants to gain exclusive pre-release testing rights? For those of you that are interested, I can just attach the levels with an e-mail and send them to you, right? I can’t see why that wouldn’t work.

I hope to upload it within the month, if that is possible. I am also wondering which music files and tilesets I should include with the upload, because some of them came with other level packs and I don’t think they are available on their own, namely Credits, Desert, and Top3. (I lost track of where the music came from) I do believe all of the tilesets came from EvilMike’s “The Rebirth of Evil,” though, so everyone should have them already.

But basically, I’m just looking for a handful of people to play through my levels and say, “This is great, go ahead and upload it,” or, “This and this could use some work.”
It’ll be fun!

The perspective seems a bit strange when looking at the floor in this screenshot. These rectangles are at least two tiles high, and at the bottom they are in the foreground and at the top they are in the background, with the middle being the part where the player stands on. The problem is the top and bottom don't look any different, which makes the overall effect jarring when compared to the overall visual style of the tileset. The best way to fix this would be to use some sort of gradient where the shading goes from dark to light.

Another issue with perspective here is in the arches in the background. Judging by the floor and the ceiling, the viewpoint here is angled downwards. Because of this, it should be impossible to see underside part at the top of the arches where it meets the wall.

Regarding the Emerald Forest:
I think it would look better if you varied the leaves, i.e. make it so the boarders aren't square. It looks a tad unnatural the way it is.
Also for the black part below the ground, make sure the brownish texture doesn't just end like it does now; put a few roots and things there to eliminate the straight, abrupt lines.
Agama's tilesets are so gorgeous but terribly hard to use... I tried making a level with that tileset (swamps of the sleeping jaguar) but I failed miserably. There is too much eyecandy! (Is that even possible?) I'm too much of a perfectionist and I couldn't get the leaves right.

Regarding Jazz Jackrabbit 2 - The Movie:
Tutorial and Scene 2 are looking good, but this is what I have to say about scene 5: The background is very blue. If it is a long level, I think it might end up hurting people's eyes simply because it is a very bright color. You are using Top Secret ]|[ tileset, right? If you are, there are plenty of opportunities for floor eyecandy; don’t only use the squares. It leads to a very boring floor. Just a few tile changes can make a big difference. I suggest you look at devres17, located in EvilMike’s pack “The Resurrection of Evil.” (http://http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=3855) It is a wonderful, wonderful, example of everything you can do with that tileset.

BTW Eigus, this uses your Megairbase remix for music. The tileset is Odyssey 3 for those who don't know.

More Bg in the flag chamber, or the tunnel on the right which is barely started?

That explains it.

However, both.

Thanks for the advice Eigus, i'll improve the eyecandy once more of the level is built.

Also, this level is asymmetrical. The red base is right below the blue base, but you must travel to the right of the level to get down/up, then back left to get to the other teams base :p

I'm very slow with my pack! I'm only at the Scene 5 (of 9 ) with 50%!
I will not be ready to october's end! But I don't have more ideas!:(

That light blue area in the last screen is animated. It flashes between various shades of blue, and is a teleporter.

Update on 'Experimental Stronghold':

I decided to use Eigus' Megairbase Mix in a later level instead. This level now uses 'Atlantis FH Mix'.

Yay! I need to make now only 3 levels of my pack, and I can after upload to J2O!

P.S.: I will upload a video to a server from the... the...um...the movie! :D

P.S.2.: I forgot to insert the background at the Scene4 Act 2! Back to the JCS...

Well, I got inspired to do more work on my level. (It needed some serious eyecandy!) So I added this:
<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc140/jimbobjj2/Jimbobemforestctf7.png?t=1194305521">
I also think I'll put the carrot in a slightly harder-to-reach spot.
EDIT: oh darn, stupid tilebugs. Ahh well.

This is a CTF level. First time I ever worked on a level of this type. Hurt events are NOT used here. Warps are used on those plant things.
Trigger Scenery are used on those lights, whenever a player enters that room, the lights turn on. When the player leaves the room, the lights turn off.

I know it looks like the room is in the air, but there is floor below it.

NOTE: "Airship Rampage" is not the final name. I cannot decide on a name for this level atm.

More screens to come.

Not bad at all, but the eyecandy in that picture looks like it was quite easy to make... you made this hurriedly again, right?
Spending time making the levels will bring better results...
Unless you waste that time doing something useless, of course...

Anyway, all in all, nice level, didn't expect that much from you.
Keep up the good work.
