Gosh you guys made so many typos that Im not even gonna bother correcting them. D:

That doesn't explain the bending logs Cooba D:. And also, yeah Iconguy is right once again, ;[ I care too much about the little things... BUT BUT BUT, nonetheless it still looks good D;.

Obviously there isn't any layer 6/7 eyecandy yet. This is a really small but very vertical level. But when there is this level is supposed to be built around a waterfall in the middle of a jungle (that explains it's name and why it is so dependent on the Y-axis).
Also, it's named after the music, os_mdstream.xm.
This is at the very bottom.
P.S.: Yay for pits! NOT

Firrst of all, I think you should have added the layer 6/7 eyecandy before uploading just to make it look as good as you possibly can, I mean these screenshots don't actually show much about gameplay... Is that a race? A CTF? - So probably showing off your EC should be shown more... And also, if I'm not mistaken isn't a stream like a river? I probably am wrong, I hate geography. ;( (I'm also curious if that level has pits or not, because if it has, why would you say "Yay for pits! NOT" D:. Anyway anyway, it still looks good ;o.

And erm, PJ, I can only assume that's a battle (I guess I'm right o.0) and so I'm wondering, is there a lot of water in that level, or is that just the bottom? It looks quite nice and I wasn't quite aware such a pallete existed ;o. (I bet its either made by PJ or IC) D:

It's hard to create eyecandy in the bricks, I thought the black made a nice touch to it, though it's just me.

I like it this far.

And that level does really look nice, Dx.

Yes, it is battle, no, this part is pretty much the only part where you need to swim, and the pallette edit was made by me.

It's a CTF level.

Yes, it has pits, but only at the very bottom near the power ups.

(P.S: If you look at one of the blue springs, you might see what you think is a tile bug. If you look more closely, that is a water fall in the background. ;<o>p)

A little update to my level: due to the small size, its layout is already finished.
I just need to add some more eyecandy and ammo. But it is promising, I tell you ;)
Hopefully it is better than Emerald Forest, but that's hard to say.

Yes, in game the level looks much better than on one screenshot. The level has more than just a lot of purple stuff. And for the people that think there's too much EC there is always Low Detail ;-)

gonna do my own jj1 sequel. remake of all jj2 levels. it's a remake of jj2. the villain of the story is not devan, but a jj2 boss. gonna give him a custom name too =D

Actually, you only need around 30fps for it to appear smooth, though ideally you want it synchronised to your monitors refresh rate.

I'm already laughing at the poor soul who is so full of himself the only two reasons he can concoct for people not liking his work are "They're just JEALOUS" and "They just HATE EVERYTHING".

So some people think repeating the same two tiles for a background and having nonsensical combinations of stalagmite tiles for a foreground is ugly and awful design. Big. (-)ing. Deal. Grow up. Tough (-), not everyone is going to like what you make. Stop being such a Dennis Dyack and just let the level speak for itself when you release it.

first of all you're no one to criticise whether some tile combination is right since you havent achieved anything when it comes to jcs. and no, best luck afterparty w/e doesnt count as an achievement. And "bg of two tiles" means what? because this level has lot of more then 2 tiles as bg.

im full of myself? not really, ive always welcomed criticism, and i always listen to it. but comparing creativity to those senseless images is just retarded. and when i finished this level i knew that not everyone would like it.. hah.

I remember emp saying that i shouldnt post a screen of this since there's so much to this level then that one screen.. i really should have listened to him. too bad..

and ive discussed this subject with multiple other people and theyve agreed that certain people here are usually just jealous, so there.

also, here's a tip: if you further want to bash my level just type, dont post those retarded images from clifferyB pack please.

You can ran through them, and the base is under them. But I agree, one big platform seems better.

Well, that's true... and besides, I'm not really the one to complain about flow here *points at his own screenshot up there*, but somehow, the distance between those platforms kind of seems to ruin a perfect straight walk over them.

I just learned that you should not run in Single Player (at least not all the time)

And that screenshot looks a lot like Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2.. which was one of my favourite zones from that game.

Anyway, here is a screenshot of the third level in Impressions A (it's the first CTF I finished for the pack and I finished 2 Battle levels too)

Theoretically they're all eventually J2O-bound. :P I'm very... scattered. I get in moods, I work on something, I post a screenshot, I move on. But given that I'm being called out, I guess I could upload something? I guess. It's okay if it's three years old, right?

The grass is more like the emarald hill , yet the tiles below are green hill I guess.
Valid point. The grass is much more like Emerald Hill (which I am not convinced is coincidental), but I liked the idea of not changing it, thus making it abundantly clear that one was playing Diamondus.
(Everyone recognizes the soil texture, or?)

Going to focus on enemies for a bit now... so far I could have just used J1CS with bmp2blox, but I want to really play with what Graphics Pack can do. :) Should be fun. Here's an unfinished layout while I fiddle.

ETA 2: Success has been had with importing (though I had to make a supplementary program to make editing some of the files easier), now it's just down to actually making all the enemies. Why is there a Jill of the Jungle sprite in Jungrock's files? :D

Here's a little update to my level: I hosted it earlier today and by popular vote people kept telling me the music doesn't fit. I need suggestions on what a better music file is than resp-z.xm that my level could use. Until I get any suggestions for the music file, I'm going to keep it as it is. And I'm sure at least some people don't want that, but I'm fine about the music right now. The music file is 'resp-z.xm'.

And my lesson for the day: Enjoy levels in their entirety. If you don't like a certain aspect of the level's design (gameplay, eye-candy, music, etc) then it's fine to tell the author about it; just don't go all out on them; that would be unwanted and uncalled for.

Looks really nice. I'd play it.

I'd agree and say the lighting is really nice but since I have no uploaded JJ2 achievements I apparently can't comment on eyecandy.

I remember that from 4/5 months ago when I just finished that level ;)

I thought that Battleships was a bit overused, but the tileset use in the walls is pretty good. I've seen the rest of the level too and I think it has some good eye candy, but the layout is not too special and there are 3 carrots that are close to each other. It's unfinished, so there are still things to fix.

Well for a test it's ok I guess. But if your makeing one make it more diffrent from those crappy 1.24 tests. Make it really good maybe add a story too it. And take a look at foo races thats one of the best test games (I think it falls under test) there is.

Also try useing diffrent tilesets what aren't used much , the tileset you are showing is used all the time. I'm sure if you use a uncommen one it will get more wows , (hint: If you need letters just edit the tileset and add letters in , with the program tileset , search it on jazz2online. and if you need a good graphic editor (free) use graphics gale its great for tilesets.)

Also don't always make every bit warp tiles think of other ways to make it fun. perhaps put in some puzzle's.

If we get more intresting tests i'm sure people will lik them more ;). Good luck.

Also try getting good at makeing battle and ctf's too.

Also, looks WAAAY better in-game.
P.S: for those of you who were on my server earlier today, the amount of CPs has <i>DRAMATICALLY</i> decreased due to unplayability and matches that were waaay too short even with 255 as the max score. Plus, I've changed the music to something that fits waaay better. ;D

Jimbob, while what Odin said may have made you think he implied he did not like it, I believe he was merely suggesting on how to improve. Usually when I post screenshots, I post finished areas. I think if you work on what he said, he won't really have room to complain. He hasn't said anything bad, he said what I would have said actually, except provided picture support which was quite helpful. I would recomend removing that stick though. Maybe putting a vertical one or two can help. Also, he's only trying to help. - It still looks good anyway.

Also, Eigus, as whacko as this thread has become, I like the picture. :]. AND I DONT MEAN THE LEVEL!!! (yes I do actually)

Um, anyways, yes, I'm working more on the eyecandy and obviously trying to improve with the advice you gave me.
But in my opinion, using masked tiles in a slowly-moving background isn't very distracting, unless you overdo it. Fyi, I've taken out the horizontal stick and added two vertical ones in it's place, btw.

What you need to do is jus try to infer from what they say that needs improvement, then show off the new and improved version (I hate it when people say that, I mean, it doesn't make sense, nothing can be new, and improved, because if its new it can't be improved, otherwise its old, and if its improved it cant be new. Anyway, keep up your level making; soon, your practice will pay off and you'll be proud in a way you can't imagine.

I know these posts were probably necessary to what was going on but, please can we go back to showing the new levels what u are buiding and goning on j2o?

2. You use the same ground tile over and over. There's about 3 different variations of ground tiles. Use them.

3. This was a little hard to illustrate, but basically you use a background wall behind the same background wall. Another perspective issue, same as with 1. in the first picture I did. It'll work, but it just rubs me the wrong way.

Yes, you have quite a good eye there. I didn't notice how the gems seem to line up, but hey, nobody can see everything.
And you're right about the perspective issues, I'll get to try and fix them right away.
Mainly that is because of my bad habit of flipping tiles when making symmetrical levels.

Mine's already almost finished ;P.
Just needs ammo and more eyecandy (and those perspective issues mentioned above have to be done).
Anyways, another very nice looking level. It seems 2008 IS the year for good levels ;D.

Ep5 is still along way off but I'm making good progress on it. This here is the main "hub" level of the episode, and the biggest level in the episode. It will probably wind up being somewhere around the same size as deserto orbital base, but split up into smaller semgents (like the temple from ep1).

Obviously the setting here is a castle on Nippius, but the levels branching off from here will actually be wildly different settings... which means I can finally go all-out and use the ideas I have that wouldn't have been fit in previous eps. I'm enjoing making this one a lot more than the previous two.

This thread is just about showing some levels. It doesn't even say "let's criticize", but we tend to do that because we're innately helpful/rude asswipes. So please, just do us all a favour and watch your language.

Yes. The weird looking spikes that don't seem like they connect to anything actually move up and down.

The rain here doesn't make much sense. Put it in the background if you have to use it at all, otherwise you are going to wind up with a level where it rains under water... and inside caves.

I'd originally suggested to have it in layers 1 or 6, since imo those are the best layers for rain.

Rain doe fit since it was put in the tileset so don't waste time t on layer 6 anyway.6 is used , but I will put it on layer 6 anyway.

I didn't really think the rain looked bad either. there is water in the level what is blue and it looks good. I thought that blue green and purple fit well together. Maybe that's just me.

I will give you a real anwser seeing hitch won't. It doesn't look transparent at all , Even with the other rain in the tileset. I tried it on background layers and forgrounds. In fact it isn't even transparent really.

Anyway I decided not to go with rain and go with lightning instead , and don't complain that rain needs to be there if lightning is , since so many other levels have done the same.

People moved to the new what would you see in jcs thread. That or no ones making a level at all. I also wish I had better feedback on my screen shot. All I got is "rain must go it sux" I just needed to know if it was ok so I could improve it if it wasn't. Jimbob said it looked good but if at least 2 did I would be indeed happy.

You could always MAKE it transparent ;D
Just go to the tileset window, select tiletype and press T. That will make it bring up a window that brings up 3 tyletypes:
Normal: explains itself
Translucent: makes it so you could see through the tile
Caption: makes it so that tile will appear in the title window

Thanks rag , Fruit is a good idea. It's a single player. I will indeed add more tree's and the lightning looks nice. I will post a new screenshot of another part of the level soon.

@Jimbob I think I know how to make things transparent by now , but thanks anyway. , I may make the white tile fog. Of course it will be transparent and not everywhere.

I think I'm finally ready to release some definitive info on the episode. It's going to have a fairly structured order to it, more than most of the other episodes. It will take place in and around five seperate fortresses. Each fortress will have one level leading up to it, one level inside the fortress itself, and one shorter level inside the bosses' lair. This means the episode will have a total of 15 unique levels... not counting revisits or story levels. That's a considerable amount, and will make ep5 the biggest yet.

The first fortress (the one on Nippius, which I posted a screenshot of earlier) is the main one, and forms a sort of hub which the four other fortresses branch off of. Each time you return to the level you will be able to explore a bit more of it. Despite forming a hub, it will still follow the format of the other areas, just on a larger scale. You will visit this level a total of five times, and each time it will be almost completely unchanged: the increased ability to explore is from your weapons, not changes in the level design.

There will be at least four separate boss fights, and probably five if I can work it in.

I held back on a lot of the previous episodes. On some I focused on story more than gameplay, and on most of the others I limited myself to one or two settings. For this one I am imposing no limits. Every idea I want to use, I will use.

Obviously this is a very ambitious project, but the lack of limitations is allowing me to work at a quicker pace. I expect to release it some time in the first half 2009.

The idea's been around ever since the first episode. I had an idea too big to upload as one episode. Splitting it into 5 seemed like the logical choice.

One of these days I intend to make a bunch of posts on my blog which detail the process I went through making this thing, from start to finish. Kind of like what blade does with his tilesets. I'm holding off on doing that for now though, mainly because I don't think many people will care enough to read it.

Well, it's not exactly like the idea is new. Tomb rabbit did it first. I also used it in a somewhat lesser sense in some of my episodes.

It's a tileset I'm working on at the moment, of which is this a screenshot of.

Why did you crop it down so much , normally it's best to get some eyecandy before your post a picture i'f thats why it's croped.

The tileset has barely any layer 4 at the moment so this is kinda the best looking screenshot I could get. Cropped because this is really the only part of the screenshot worth viewing.

I just started making a level for JJ2 after a few year long break. Now, whenever I try to make something, and then testrun it, I get an Access Violation Error. I used the FAQ, but cant find out whats wrong. I got a hold of The Secret Files, so is there something with this versjion that - things up with the editor?

Or more correctly, you've probably flipped an anim tile with a "trigger" on it, or placed a "trigger" on a non-animating tile. :P Try to skim through your level to change that. =P should work again.
