There is NO way that JJ2 would show the health as numbers. It only uses one heart sprite, and if we could change that, well, we'd have JJ2 mods off the wazoo.
Let me explain it better =D
You could create a program that reads your health, it would reset it when you got hurt, but it would also keep track of how much damage you recieve. It would subtract the amount of damage you recive from whatever number you specify, and then to display it, you would have some text (like text event text.) that got memory edited, to display the number in the correct place, to prevent the text from moving or going off the screen you would nop the ASM that makes the text move.
n00b
Jun 15, 2006, 11:26 AM
That would prove impratical. AFAIK, in Single Player JJ2 can only display 1 text event at a time. Why would Violet leave a Terexin NPC around if he won't say anything?

That looks quite pretty. Except the background tiles meant to cover up the upper half of the parallax(sp?) background don't tile well...
And what Birdie said to Biohazard. The tileset looks awesome, but the ground is too repetitive.

It's pretty hard to recreate the old Beach BG, except for the poorly colored bit, I'm actually extremely close.

Aaah, I'm digging the look of that. With a bit of work, that could be made to feel like a really cool, romantic grove-like place, with all the water and the rocks and the plant-life... quite cool. I'd advise to make the plantlife a little more dense in some places.

Does saying I like them count as arguing? I like Cooba's, too, you know, I just don't see anything special in them. Since saying I see nothing special in these (despite liking them a lot) will start a flame war, I won't say it.

wow that looks good, when will it be out?
It's already out. :D
Biohazard: Some parts of your tilesets are of lower quality than what they resembled, such as the frozen dopefish and baddies, the HH98-style ground and the HH94 (or 95..?) trees. I don't like the grass very much either, since it's more dotty than patchy and they look like spikes.
The big picture still looks stunning. The mountains, sky and clouds are amazing, and it doesn't really matter that textured backgrounds are harder to use. I really like the in-built animated snow (finally you can have proper snow in multiplayer!).
While there aren't many natural objects, every single one is..um, adorable. I loved the stompable ice surfaces, revealing water underneath...looks cold. :p The blue, snowy Carrotus pole tree is also a nice touch. Good job getting the white colour right. Talking about colour, the snow is a bit untextured, but that 3x1 'curl' of snow looks kinda delicious. Ooh, and I still enjoyed the deep-frozen characters. They reminded me of the ice cave scene in Ice Age. You could add more interesting stuff into the ice (I actually thought that castle was also in the ice block from your screenshot..), not just dopefish. ;)
I have to stop writing now or I might as well turn it into a review (was I using a constant tense throughout? :|). A final thing...with a few tile adjustments and additions, this cold very well be turned into Blackraptor's Lair. ;)
R3p: Your picture's down.

We could keep calling each other pompous, egocentric or whatever ad nauseum, but in the end, it's all a matter of opinion. Looks nice, although the blue in the background of the second screenshot clashes with the 'desert-yellow'. I suggest you try a little bit of a brighter blue. RGB 128, 233, 255 would work, in my opinion. At least, I can't really tell, but I guess it's the textured background fade colour.

This will probably take MONTHS! Tileset I am using is "SMB3: Grass land."

To be honest, making the official tilesets "Forbidden" by saying that they're overused just makes them extrememly underused.
Something thats never made sense to me- So a tileset is "overused", so the (-) what?
Just because a tileset is underused doesn't make the level any better, and an 'overused' tileset doesn't make a level any worse.

Why, that's pure balderdash. The game creators intended them to be used, and by God, I'll use them for as long as I want. As far as I'm conserned, the only tileset makers you can really trust compeletely are the ones who made the game in the first place. Simply balderdash.
And like I said, it needs some work. And by "some" I mean "quite a bit", and by "quite a bit" I mean "quite a bit". Which means it's not done. And I just saw this thread so I decided to show what I was doing. And stuff...

Not really. The game has grown so apart from the game maker's original intentions. Just compare Diamondus Warzone to Distopia or Semiconductor. The fact is, the community's idea of what is good is different then the game makers. The same goes for tilesets. Tilesets are expected to have working water, snow, pinball events, the works. Plus all destruct scenery, et cetera. Eyecandy galore, transitions between ground and background. I could go on.
Official tilesets are nice, but claiming that there is no need to use player made tilesets just is over the top.

Which is also my problem. Although I think I have made a level with another type of layout than you usually see of me in one of the levels. What I do is that I look at other levels and see how they are built up. I think a level with a platformy layout like DW is not what you should make at the moment. However, a level with 'DS style'(yes that's becoming popular) has just some platforms in the sky that have little purpose. Download some of my levels from 2004/2005 to see what I mean.
And also try to make open levels, as they have much better flow. I think my 'Some Treeish Level' is a perfect example because it's not open.
Strato
Jul 19, 2006, 09:51 AM
If you have a problem with platformyness, I studied a lot of levels, and I developed a good mind-set. Don't think of levels as platforms floating in air, but as tunnels carved into walls.
Fawriel
Jul 19, 2006, 10:36 AM
I try to design my levels as naturally as possible, but of course, realistic level design would mean that it's all just some flat area with possible platforms being branches or something. It all depends on the tileset you are using and the area you are trying to create, then try to think of ways to still make the design interesting. Basically, what Strato said, too.
In the original levels, Colonius would have some parts where the sewers are sort of built into the houses and rise above ground level; that's unnatural.
For natural design, I'd give you a shameless plug for Fragile Existence, but since that has design flaws... study Evil Mike's Invasion of Deserto packs.

Although you probably don't care to hear my little old advice...
I make my levels by playing it by ear. The level creator is my canvas, the tileset my paint. Music helps as well, that is, getting into the 'mood' of your level. Yes, levels have moods, as well as faces and desires. They all will become great... all you need is to give it your all.

Hmm. You know, what I also do is wait until the power goes out, giving me an excuse not to be on the computer. Then I draw a very crude scetch of the level I was planning on making, along with a printout of the tileset to see if it is plausible. This usually works until the candle burns my work/fingers/house.
You could also try the same strategy in the bathroom. Just hide whatever you were doing in the newspaper that's mysteriously there.

The single player adventure I have in mind is so big and ambitious that I'll have to release it in seperate halves. Unfortunately, since I just thought it up a couple days ago, it's not terribly solid, but I know that I'm looking for a tileset that shows the interior of an airplane and a Roman-themed tileset (possibly with people in it).
Try not to draw any conclusions until I actually have something concrete to present.

Also another hint: Focus on quality, rather than quantity. In other words, a short but very original, fun, and challenging level is a lot better than a long, boring one. A good example of a short but fun level can be found here. (http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=406) Of course, if your level is both, fun AND long, that is awesome.

It will be my own custom type, "Maze". It will be used for co-op gameplay. One person is Jazz while the other player must be Spaz or Lori. You need teamwork in order to play the level and work together to beat the Boss at the end. You can add as many obstacles and enemies as you like(more is better). You could have something like some Horizontal Blocks then some Vertical Blocks straight afterwards. And I'm also making a level pack "Rabbit Adventure". I've decided which tilesets to use, but I haven't decided the story yet. I am using:
*Forest
*Forest Evening
*Woodlands
*Swamps
*Swamps Evening
*Egypt
*Egypt Night
*Mega Megatropolis
*Spacey Universe
*Heaven
*Sirius1
*Sirius3
*Desert
*Where Bad Rabbits Go
EDIT - @8:09PM
I have now started RA. I have spent 2 hours planning the story. Here is what I've come up with:
5,000 years ago, an evil king spread terror throughout the land. But his evil plan was stopped by a rabbit with a gun. In his last attempt to keep his evil power in the world forever, he stored his evil power in 5 sacred stones. Then he hid the sacred stones in the most remote locations on the planet. If anybody could obtain all 5 sacred stones, he/she would be able to go to the Pits of Hell, and be given the power to turn into a demon. Devan Shell, a turtle desperate to get rid of Jazz, searched the world frantically for the 5 sacred stones. If he gets all 5, he will have the power to destroy the world! Jazz needs to find all of the sacred stones before Devan does!

The sucker tube would make you capture the flag.

....he figured that much.
But there's only a one-tile wide opening to the tube.
Which can easily be camped.

No, the opening to the tube is much bigger, and you can go both ways in the tube.

I have just come up with a SP level idea today. I have called it Jazz Under Fire. Sorta like Agent Jackrabbit and 00Jazz. I can't provide screenies yet since I've only just started.
The story involves Devan in a plot to take over the World. It is up to Jazz to stop his evil plan. There will be various missions to complete with some objectives to do before you can complete the mission. Each mission will consist of 4 levels. There will be a Boss every 4 levels. I have just started on the first level. Various tilesets will be used.
BTW, those Owl pics make me laugh.

OMG DEVAN PLOT BEEN DUN B4, ORLY???
I personally think a Devan plot is much better than a pack with a basic plotline (Say, Devan kidnaps Eva)only with a replaced villain (Say Bolly) only because of the fact everyone complains about Devan plots.
Does replacing Devan with *insert random villain here* REALLY make the story more tolerable?
We don't even know what Devan is plotting, but I fear even if it's something ingeniously original like, say, a machine that turns Rabbits into Turtles, you'd still complain about it just because it's Devan doing it not Uterus.

For some odd reason, the standard Devan plot seems to be favourited at J2O's poll.
I like stories like that of Evil Clones a lot more.

I think bilsy gets overused to,why not make it,something like, the (forgot how to spell qween :P) is trying to get revenge over jazz or something,You can use this plot if you want,i was gonna use it once but oh well,i was thinking the tutrles the lizards the random anmimals, and the weirld experiments were all like in there own group, and of course there were the rabbits, and you are all at war.

Someone who doesn't have a name in JCS.
But only if they aren't acting as Devan's stunt double.
The problem isn't that Devan is doing it, the problem is theres little reason for Devan to do it other than "Lol he's evil, just stoop him, mahnz". If you take the same story and then toss in say, Eggman, in place of Devan that doesn't make the story any better. Heck, Eggman has less motivation than Devan and would ultimately make the story worse.
However, if you're going to take the time to make a good motivation for Eggman, you could have also took the time to make a good motivation for Devan and made the pack that would kick this extremely dumb stereotype to the curb.

If I may suggest something, put some reason as to why Jazz has to find and destroy those crates. That will add some atmosphere and also gives the mission some sense.
Screenies are looking good, with the exception of the ground in the third screenshot (use some different tiles, the tileset offers enough of them).

Actually, I have to strongly disagree here.
I like the ground in the third one.. it's always the same tile, of course, but... the other screenshots look horribly cluttered, too many contrasts and different colors. Sometimes, it's better to have some less variety for the sake of not hurting one's eyes.
Actually, disregard that about the other screenshots being cluttered. The background does, but I think he did a pretty good job in distinguishing ground from background.

The screens are from one level only, so dont worry there will be plenty of variety in the episode overall. It wont be like Jungle rabbit 1 with too many jungle levels this time, I got some great ideas to prevent too many jungle levels, it will play a small part in the episode.(It atleast needs some jungle level(s), heck, the episode is called jungle rabbit.)}>
It's kinda funny that the only interesting picture you like isn't event in it.
