OK, I'm making a new race, with multiple routes and stuff, it's really not as complex as it sounds (oh hell yeah it is). It's gonna be one for the books. Once that's done, I'll start with another CTF or two, which are to be probably following a similar concept to my latest CTF (following the trend of jazz bias and fastfires and stuff). This one might be a little more... able to duel in (or probably bigger games). Yeah. =]

(I hope it worked)

Basic Plot:
Jazz has to leave his program and travel through the internet to fight a computer virus that could destroy the world as we know it.

Wow, I absolutely adore the upper screenshot. Really nice way to implement JJ2 art in the game itself. Also, I love that pallette work on the Carrotus tileset.

At the beginning of level 7, I wasn't able to move further than pos 2,5. I had to JJFLY my way down.

Troglobite
Oct 17, 2008, 04:30 AM
I intentionally didn't include goodies or ammo, in order to make the levels a bit more challenging. If it ended up just lowering the quality of the pack overall, I'm sorry.

I've used both Jazz and Spaz on level seven, and couldn't get stuck at 2,5. Do you have any idea as to why you might have gotten stuck, so I can try and fix it?

SPAZ18
Oct 17, 2008, 05:30 AM
Hmmm... I just tried the level again. I tried starting in Captain Cook at LV7 and I got through 2,5.
However, if I start from LV1 and get to LV7 I seem to get stuck in the same position. I don't think it's anything to do with the level itself but I'm not sure what could cause that? Some flaw in Captain Cook?
I'll try it from the Home Cooked Levels list.

EDIT: Just attempted it from the HCL list and it works fine, so it must be a bug with Captain Cook.

Puffie40
Oct 17, 2008, 07:56 AM
I believe level 6 ends with a end warp, right? Jazz will then "Warp into" the next level. Jazz will get stuck in waited suckertube events if he is in the "Warp fall" mode.

Don't worry, that's a common mistake for cutscene beginners. The main way to fix it is have jazz sucked along some masked "Acc R" or "Acc L" events.

Troglobite
Oct 17, 2008, 06:09 PM

Remember that post I made a long time ago, that said I was making Christmas levels a bit early, and said I was making a small pack of 3 CTF levels?
Well, here is a screenshot of the third one out of three.

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc140/jimbobjj2/jimbobchrischaos1.png?t=1224971763
<hr>
About the pack: The level pack will consist of 3 CTF levels (as stated already), and they each have their own style of layout and music.
The pack will feature these levels (the first two have the names already announced, as I posted a screenshot of the second one about 2 months ago and I hosted the first one in July):
<b>1) Christmas Blizzards</b> (<b><u>100%</b></u>) <font color="green">||||||||||</font>
<b>2) Silent Night, Unholy Night</b> (76%, needs ammo and more eyecandy, layout is now finished) <font color="green">|||||||</font><font color="red">|||</font>
<b>3) Chrisco Chaos</b> (80%, needs more eyecandy and ammo, layout is already done) <font color="green">||||||||</font><font color="red">||</font>
The levels will (hopefully) be released on the 15th of November, as with the two levels I released last year.
This minipack will be called the Christmas Fun Pack, btw. I sure hope it will live up to its name!

Those mountains seem out of place. I mean, they seem so dwarfed compared with the caves on layer 7, in which unless the caves were absolutely huge, makes no sense at all. I also don't like the fact they contrast so much with the rest of the background.

Aside from that, looking good.

Nov 9, 2008, 01:26 PM
That's not a PA though, it's just cooba saying that your level (or levels by you in general) is (are) "still not nice".

If you don't want people telling you that your level doesn't look good, don't post screenshots here &mdash; and reconsider the way <em>you</em> give feedback.

"But it was just him dissing my level, he didn't give any constructive criticism!" &mdash; nor did you offer any arguments for why cooba's level is "a clone of Medieval Skyscrapers".

Jimbob
Nov 9, 2008, 01:29 PM
but it's only cooba that does that.
Also, "cooba[si]: If you want to be a (-)ty level maker, go right ahead."
I still remember that.

And I wasn't being negative about that screenshot.

Stijn
Nov 9, 2008, 01:31 PM
Well, it's not against to rules to speak negatively of someone else's level, so deal with it or stop posting in this thread. Of course it'd have been nice if cooba replied constructively instead of just qualifying your screenshot as "not nice".

But then again unfoundedly claiming someone else's level completely rips off another level is not very nice to begin with.

Jimbob

The tileset's going to be a small, suburban town, where Jazz might spend time when he's not saving the world. I used Neobeo's sprite dynamite to get all the frames of the Jazz running animation, but replaced the gun with a lawnmower. 1. You see where you keep repeating those trees? Mix it up, put other tree combinations in there. It's possible to make two, four, or even five trees standing together with some crafty tilework.

2. That blue line is a very obvious line of symmetry. If you mix up the eyecandy so that it's not so symmetrical on both sides, it'll look a lot less boring.

3. Too tile-y. Make it less tile-y.

4. For the love of god fix this

5. As an afterthought, seeker powerups are generally frowned upon in levels. Don't use them unless it's like the only source of seekers or something.

Hitch
Nov 21, 2008, 04:52 PM
Did that take you like 45 minutes to put together, and have an honest point to argue with?

Anyway, I think the level is fine, Odin does have a point about the trees in the background, but I totally disagree about the Symmetry and the seek powerup. Eyecandy can be mixed up in Symmetrical levels, but It's not like I'll take points off for using the same eyecandy on each side.

A few hints (Which you can totally disagree with and not use) :

-Perhaps make the flow and ceiling the same, what I mean is, if the ground slopes, the ceiling slopes, maybe add a few upper cuts here and there to mix it up.

-Area of the level could be perhaps bigger. From where the seeker pu hits, it might be a good idea to make the ceiling a bit higher, to make game play a lot better, so you won't constantly hit yourself, annoying the (-) out of yourself. Have like widespread levels, I guess that's what you call it, if you know what I mean.

-Springs in the level seem a bit useless towards the seekers, since there's a ceiling right there, maybe have like a dip in the floor, and add suckers? -10 (y) Or something like that to mix game play up a bit, but it's just since those springs seem so close to each other, and really, useless.

Other than that, it looks good from that screen shot, perhaps I could beta test it, if not, it's your loss. Anyway, good luck with it.

I agree the lava should be lower, its really messing up with the overall perspective. Makes Jazz and the ground he is on look like its jutting out at an angle. I dislike the way you made the caves for the way they look so "box" like. Sure, it's partly the tileset's fault but I believe with a little effort they could be made to look more natural. Look at what Blur did with the caves in Dawn of Combat, for example. I also dislike the fact that you used those sprite layer tiles in the background like that; it looks kinda nonsensical, especially what appears to be a floating gargoyle (?)

Despite that, there's something about those screens that catches my eye, although not really sure what it is.

Something I've found by talking to people is that they tend to use the blaster in single player, even when other ammunition is plentiful. I found a way to solve this in a certain low-gravity water level I am making.

Force players to run through a section with a fire shield, which is needed to get past a certain obstacle at the end. There will be enemies blocking your way, but the shield makes it impossible to use your blaster. Funny I never thought of doing this before.

Water levels are so boring without gimmicks like this. I'm also tempted to make a section which is infested with rats, but something tells me that under-water rats is a bit too ridiculous, even for me.

Violet CLM
Nov 30, 2008, 06:50 PM
The best example I remember seeing of combating that issue (sheer blaster proliferation) was Odin's <a href="http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/downloads/info.php?levelID=4950">HH'05 Remix</a>, where the enemies were so cunningly placed that I found myself needing to use particular weapons to get by each area. I have an idea, though, albeit even less conventional than your brilliant solution... *will be back later tonight*

EvilMike
Nov 30, 2008, 07:39 PM
Enemy placement is definitely the best way to encourage people to use weapons. People always tell me my episodes are very hard but if you make liberal use of the weapons you find it's not so bad. Most other episodes are the same way, and the one you linked is definitely a great example of that.

It's also an example of yet another download which n00b downloaded 50 thousand times.

I pretty much playtested the pack with the blaster. :3c Call it accidental genius or something.

By 'Destroyed Toy Fortress' I'm just referring to the fact that it has a dark atmosphere, even though it includes such playful objects.
And thank you for your welcomes, everybody. I'll try not to be an (-)(-)(-) this time.

EDIT: Grace is almost done. The same time I left the community, I stopped working on it, but it will be ready soon. Let's just call it a Christmas present.

if this community is actually mature enough to take an unique pack seriously, instead of me getting lots of (-)(-)(-)(-) to my back as usual, then it will stay forever.

Okay, so you upload a picture of a level you're working on showing nothing but orange lines and vertical text. Mike points out that there's nothing of substance in the picture, I reply with an ICE BURN emoticon. Instead of being the bigger man and ignoring instigation, you whine that the community is acting immature and threaten to never release the pack. Upon further instigation, you act like a 3 year old and stamp your feet and hold your breath.

And we're immature?

It's the (-)(-)(-)(-)ing Internet. Get over it.

Omg just not a CTF base.

You should totally delete it. Make a dom point instead. Even better, an END LEVEL event. Yah. Make is a single player level. 70x70 tiles. It should ROCK.

Most of my energy (Whatever is left from school, or chores, or both, or...) has been into the tileset that will make up the space station. I think I am at a stage where I can start building a level with it. (The "Stuff a tileset HAS to have" is there, and I will add what I need as it comes along)

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/puffie40/Jazzavatar/Screenshots/l3ss1.jpg

as you can see, a bunch of tiles are taken directly from two rather popular tilesets (One is not so obvious, but I took it's styling) I'm not too happy with the main room background in this photo. I kinda wish it was deeper :-/ Maybe if I used a Trans. black tile....

Not pictured: Gems, ammo, etc which I haven't put in this part of the level yet. Also, while this is a single player level, you'll notice there are not too many enemies around (though they do appear in on hard mode in this screen). That's because the challenge comes from trying to outrun (or at best keep up with) THE FLOOD.

Pretty much the whole level is like this.
