I haven’t reviewed downloads on J2O for a long while, so I may have to get a little used to it again. But since I’ve downloaded and played the example level included with this tileset, It really reminded me on how cool Jazz2 actually is! And ofcourse the level wasn’t so good without the greatness of this new Medivo tileset conversion!

THE CONTENT:
This download includes one real tileset that was built to 4 different palette conversions. There is also a (really cool) example level included. You could see this tileset as a mix of the original JJ2 Medivo set and the JJ1 one. Like you’ll see the original stony Medivo ground and walls from JJ2, and the metal pipes from JJ1. There is also great rain and lightning effect, and ofcourse the great lava from JJ1.

THE PLACEMENT:
This tileset has anything the Jazz2 gameplay needs. You know, poles, vines, tubes, etc. Other than that, also Jazz1 signs do have a place in this set to make Jazz1 based levels possible. The mix of JJ2 and JJ1 tiles flows greatly over each other and gives you a great feeling when playing levels created with this.

THE USE:
The use of the ideas for this set are good. You can make the original Jazz2 gameplay possible aswell as some different stuff. After all, Jazz2 has events based on the Medivo set and alot of enemies that fit with it’s style. This all means that much could be created with this set!

THE SCORE:
This tileset is one of the better tileset conversions on J2O, and I hope that we’ll see much levels using this in the future. Too bad that the great example level didn’t made it to the worthy IF pack.. Download recommended and a big 8.5 for the good work!

I have to agree with Booshi/P4ul on this. This level is not worth an 8.0.

EYECANDY

Background is a bit dull. Hardly any eyecandy in Layer 4. It looks repetitive. There’s what looks like a Hotel room in the BG but it looks confusing. Good try on being original.
2/10

GAMEPLAY

The level is far too small. 50 × 35 is NOT a good battle level, though it is a good size for duels, I don’t think it would be used that much. It needs to be bigger. This level would be too easy for a battle.
4/10

WEAPON & ITEM PLACEMENT

Weapons were placed OK but there weren’t really enough. Power-ups were not placed in the open which is good but in a level this small, they will be easy to find. There are 2 Carrots in the level which is not enough.
3/10

SUMMARY

GOOD POINTS

*Item placement is OK

BAD POINTS

*Too small. 50 × 35
*Not enough weapons or carrots
*PUs are too easy to find.

TOTAL = 9/30 = 3.0

RANK: F = Bad (Replaced U with F)

DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION

No. I decided to add that it is good for duels but I still don’t think it would be used that much as there are better duel levels available (I think).

I didn’t see the second Carrot.

They all add signs from JJ1,and those good-looking sucker tubes.the textured backgrounds look awesome, especially in the 2nd tileset.Good levels can be maked with these tilesets, but do not use lava too much, because lava animations are kinda buggy.the poles with those diamond-like things are cool!Like I said before, good levels can be maked with these tilesets.

It was a good idea to make a different Medivo conversion, even though this is very good. Why? Continue reading the review.
This tileset is an edit of the Medivo set with some added JJ1 elements. Additions include: Lava falls, Sucker Tubes, metal pipes, some JJ1 style signs, poles, and a working Textured Background.
This conversion also makes Medivo have perfect masking, which is a major fix. There are the standard two palettes, plus a bright Red palette that resembles the JJ1 colouring, and dark brown/yellow palette. Unfortuneatly the lava falls look ugly in the 3rd and 4th palette. :(
The animation for them are buggy in all palettes too.
You could of also of found a use for the Bee-hive and made Rain avalible in single drops rather than just in clusters. Those custom destruct blocks and the poles looks awesome though. In general this is a great Medivo conversion as it is, but it doesn’t really resemble JJ1 medivo that much, it’s more of a JJ2 medivo with some of JJ1 medivo’s elements like I said earlier. Even with all those cons I have said in the review it is still a great edit, and I do plan on using it.

Download recommendation.

@Hitch: They meant the example level, you can still rate the tileset.

I made a combination of the three battle levels too (even before this one) and I must say that you could’ve spent a lot more time on the eyecandy and tiling of the level edges (just look at mine, I frequently host it in the RR Server)… Also I didn’t really think the springs were bad. The different Battle levels could have been connected better though.

An updated version of the Windows 98 tileset. Has it improved?

You can still be creative with this tileset because it still has the tiles from the original Windows 98 tileset. There is now more gameplay in this tileset (shooting blocks and trigger blocks have now been added in), but its still missing vines and poles. The Tubelectric tiles are quite pointless because they don’t fit in with the rest of the tileset. Overall, the tileset has only improved because it has slightly more gameplay.

RATING: 6.7
DOWNLOAD?: I still recommend this, but its only a slight change from the original.

..what the heck?

Eyecandy

How in the world does this level get an 8 and 4.5 for the eyecandy? I’d say it’s a mirage, not eyecandy. This level doesn’t have anything which could be called that. Layer 4 is entirely bland and boring, and the only thing in the background is a hotel room (???). As for the background itself, it fades to black, and the background itself is very light, which looks bad :/

Gameplay

Also a heavy overrating here. This level is 50×35 tiles big (congrats), and all the paths are straight like a dash: – Too small, not enough ammo, blahblahblah.

Summary
  • n/c
  • once again everything

Overall
This review is directed not only to the author, but also to other reviewers who overrate everything; mainly I mean people such as Kax, and SPAZ18 who gives an 8/10 for a level’s eyecandy just for a “good background” because he’s unable to make a better one.
Thank you ladies, goodbye

Hmm…

Visual Appeal – 3 out of 5

This level uses Tik’s conversion of the Marble Garden tileset from Sonic 3, and well, uh, it could make much better use of said tileset. The background looks decent, even if it could use layer 7 in a better way than scrolling clouds, but the sprite area does leave room for improvement.

The tileset doesn’t really allow for too much eyecandy variety, but myself I see a few creative options there and there. Anyway, aside from being a little bland, it manages to look so-so. There are no obvious tilebugs, at least.

Playability – 3 out of 5

First of all, this level is way too short. I think I was done finishing it in a bit more than 5 minutes. Some areas are a bit interesting (such as the one with float lizards and vines), and it would’ve been cool if they had been expanded.

Also, I played this level in Hard mode (as I always do), and unfortunately, it was a cakewalk. The only place where I lost a heart was the boss arena (which was done alright, but could use some more ideas). Work on the levels difficulty more next time.

Summary
  • Looks decent.
  • Too short
  • Too easy

Overall
Well, this shows promise. Keep my advice in mind and practise making levels.

Uhm, this level is way overrated so I shall rate it to give it, it’s right position.

Rabbit Settlement

Now the only reason I’m rating this is becasue the level is way overtaed and does NOT deserve an 8.

Gameplay: Well, the gameplay was, uhm, wierd. The quality of the level was not that good at all, and the level wasnt even. It didn’t have a good flow to it, and it gets confusing at parts.
4.5/10

Eyecandy: Uhm, well I found no bugs what to speak of but there was a huge mistake I found. There was absoulty no eyecandy(backround). You could of atleast added a different color texture to layer 8 but noo. And some parts like the backround didnt seem to fit. It looks like a soild wall but it’s really just backround. Horribly used.
4.5/10

Layout: Uhm, I can’t really say anything here except its strange…
N/A

Weapon/Carrot placement: Well the weapon placement was actully ok. Not really. The only good thing about the level was you actully put the Powerups somewhere instead of just randomly placing them on the ground. Carrot placement. Meh. Horrible.
4.5/10

Overall the level was not that good but it was a start if you’ve never made levels before. It was quite small and it was a useless upload.

Score
4.5/10+4.5/10+4.5/10= 4.5

Even though this leve earned a 6.3 it still deserves a 4.5 or lower. I find a 6.5 and higher a good level but meh. The level isn’t that great. I’d play it for laughs. Thats all, nothing more.

~HïTçH

Oho, being harsh don’t you think. Meh, this really doesn’t even deserve a 4.5, just being nice.

It’s a console program, just run it without arguments and it will print out usage information.
Anyhow, making this easy to use was never the purpose of this program, as it is explained in the description. However, anyone can take this and make a nice GUI if he wants to, as long as he does it under the terms of GPL.

EYECANDY

Pretty good. The backgrounds look great. I didn’t come across any tile bugs. The effects used on some of the levels were very cool.

10/10

GAMEPLAY

The pack was a bit short I thought. The levels were not really that long or that difficult. I didn’t think there were enough secrets to be found. So the gameplay kinda let this pack down. The 2 Bubbas made it harder at the end.

6/10

ITEM PLACEMENT

There were 3 PUs in LV2 which I thought made it a bit too easy especially because I got the Blaster PU which is the best. There was an RF PU in LV3 which was placed well as I didn’t see it on the first play through. I didn’t think that there was enough food as I didn’t get a Sugar Rush. Placement is good but there’s not really enough items to find.

5/10

ENEMY & OBSTACLE PLACEMENT

Not really that many enemies in this pack. I saw about 20 enemies, that’s not really enough to kill me though. Placement is OK but there’s not enough.
Obstacles were a bit lax. There was some Trigger Scenery used in LV2 but there wasn’t anywhere else. There were some Spikeballs in LV2 also but it just wasn’t enough.

5/10

SUMMARY

GOOD POINTS

*Really cool effects
*Good Backgrounds
*No tilebugs

BAD POINTS

*Short
*Not many items
*Not many enemies
*Lack of obstacles

TOTAL = 26/40 (6.5)

RANK: D+ = GOOD

DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION?

The eyecandy was great but the pack was a bit short. I’ll give this a YES as I think it’s worth a look because of the cool effects. Anything that gets 6.5 or higher will now get a Yes from me.
