Eyecandy
The background isn’t terrible. The rest of the eyecandy however is poor. Some of it just looks wrong and other parts don’t fit the level.

Gameplay
Gameplay is average. The flow wasn’t very good and there were many dead ends, but it seemed that it was still satisfactory.

Item Placement
This is the level’s best part. Weapon selection and placement is above average, but not enough to make this level worthwhile.

Conclusion
A pretty average level with bad eyecandy and OK weapon placement. I can’t really recommend this for download, but keep trying.

Eyecandy
Eyecandy is very nice, as it tends to be with Super Mario Brothers tilesets. I’m not sure why, but it’s pretty hard to make a level using that tile set that looks terrible without trying.

Gameplay
Gameplay is OK, but nothing spectacular. It seems fluid, but at points the Mario’s games gripes (like the fact that it is a platformer and Jazz, well, lacks similar platform types) becomes immediate. Still fairly good, though.

Item Placement
Item placement was pretty good, but also not amazing. There was some ammo, some non-ammo items, etc. They were spread out accross the levels but ammo seemed to be a little bit more common towards the end of the levels, which is pretty useless since the levels are about to end anyway. Still, very nice.

Conclusion
This is a good pack overall. The levels are similar, but that’s not a surprise. In fact, throughout my review, I kept accidentally referring to them as one level, which is why it sounds so weird. Good, and worth the download.

Eyecandy
These levels suffer from a lot of eyecandy bugs, which severely detract from the overall experience. There were numerous tile glitches, which ranged from annoying to purely ugly.

Gameplay
There were a few annoyances in this category, but generally moving around was fairly easy. However, the levels’ layouts, with their several dead ends and walls that are easy to hit into, quickly became aggrivating. Not up to standards.

Item Placement
Item placement was fairly good, but still not as good as it could be. Most items were placed well, but some seemed to be randomly dropped in at the last minute.

Conclusion
This level suffers from huge amounts of minor annoyances that severely detract from gameplay. There are numerous errors that could have been avoided through more testing and longer time spent on this level. Sorry, but I can’t recommend this for download.[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]

Eyecandy: 5/20
This is a level featuring New York City, which recently was attacked, as most of us all know. However, I can not add on points to a level for just being well-timed. The tileset is used OK, but it still doesn’t quite look right. Eyecandy is a little simplistic, and looks wrong at some points. However, it’s not really terrible.

Item Placement: 6/15
Item placement was one of this level’s worst problems. The item placement seems random at best, with no prior planning. Important ammo is often out in the open while normally easy-to-get items are oddly hidden in hard-to-get-to locations. This is very unbalanced.

Atmosphere: Not Applicable/25
I do not give atmosphere ratings to levels that are already this low on score, because this sharply lowers scores, and I’m not that unfair of a reviewer.

Tileset Use: 3.5/5
To the author’s credit, the tileset was generally used correctly, but looked odd at times. Overall, this is where the level excels most. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the least important measures in my rating.

Gameplay: 14/35
“Ouch.” This level just doesn’t have good flow at all, and it’s not really worth a download. Sorry.

Score: 3.8
Adjusted Score: 4.5

Following acid’s method, which I may use in the future for reviewing hotels (note that the individual rankings do not go toward the final verdict):

Rooms: The rooms weren’t very interesting at all. They were OK, but they still didn’t make looking around them fun and kind of took away from the “ownership experience” if that exists for hotel levels. (6/10)

Areas:
Airboard arena: Dah. This idea should die from all hotel rooms. Airboards look cool, but just aren’t fun. (4/10)

Battle arena: Likely the best part of the level. It’s small, but it’s fun to play for about five minutes, which is longer than I can stand playing most hotels. (7/10)

Pool: An empty box with water. At least be more creative. (4/10)

Airboard tag: I dislike gametypes that you can’t tell who won. I dislike airboards. I dislike playing underwater, where this is. Guess how much I like this area? (3/10)

Rollercoasters: Hmm…a sucker tube going through different environments. It’s been done before, many times. (4/10)

Pinball: Pinball rooms give me rashes. (5/10)

Golf: Actually, this is a fairly new idea, but I still don’t like it. Too noisy, too. (6/10)

Don’t make hotels. No one should make them unless they are amazing, which few are. For this, I give a 5.7, but no download recommendation.[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]

Much like “Gold Rush” but this was earlier. A very nice effort all-around. Eyecandy could be better, but it’s still good. And just because it makes you cold isn’t really a great reason to give a 2. ;-P

Taz: Some users for some reason post 2 reviews whenever they review, due to some glitch. My “Trafton” account has that bug, and there’s no way to stop it. In fact, “RosetaJOL” even posts three reviews each time. I don’t think it damages the average, though.

And this is a pretty good download. Download recommendation.

This level pack is, in one word, HUGE. And it’s not only file size-wise. While I’m sure it must be torture for those with “52K” (Do you mean 56K?) modems, it was still bad downloading it even on cable. However, it was worth it.

The actual pack is all-around excellent. Gameplay is very good, with very good weapon placement, eyecandy, and good flow. But there were some tile glitches, but it didn’t really subtract from the overall package.

Download recommendation? Yes, if you can afford the time and space that it takes to download and install a multi-megabyte level pack.[This review has been edited by Trafton AT]

It does not surprise me at all that this level was made in ten minutes. It feels like it.

The tileset was used correctly, which shows that you are capable of creating good levels if you just slowed down. The idea of walking on the sky is strange, and eyecandy is also horrible. The tileset may have been used correctly, but it still isn’t pretty.

Gameplay was the worst point, in fact. The level played awfully. Enemy placement was dreadful as I expected. Item placement was nearly as bad.

There is really no way that I can recommend this level for download. Spend more times on your levels and if you really have some odd urge to make a bad ten minute level, don’t upload them. If you already know it’s bad, why destroy your average level rating?

Sorry, but there is no way I can give this a download recommendation. Slow down and some day, you might make a great level.

Treasure packs are few and far between, and good ones are even harder to find. However, this pack by Warlord (aka Felix) is pretty good overall. The levels are all generally well-made and there are no glaring deficiencies in any of them. However, I agree with EvilMike in that some of them contained few gems compared to the other one. I hosted this online, and after I got sufficient people to play a good treasure match (trust me – it’s not easy) I quickly found that a few of the levels don’t have enough gems at all. There was one point where I had to use Controller, because no one was able to get to 100 gems even after ten minutes. Overall, however, this is about as good as treasure packs get. There are a few gems here (no pun intended) but also some that are more akin to coal. Other than the lack of gems in the “coal” levels, there’s not much more to improve. Eyecandy is good, and gem placement is very nice. A download recommendation for this one is nearly automatic, since you don’t see many high-quality treasure levels or packs these days. A very nice job.
