JJ2+ resumes development

BlurredD, creator of JJ2+, has released its source code to a team of planners and developers so that it can continue to be developed, even though he no longer personally has the free time to do so. The project is no longer dead; I however have no estimates to offer of when the next release will occur or what it will focus on, since we are still in the early exploratory stages, in terms of both working with the code itself and determining the structure and goals of the effort.

Even as we sit in happy anticipation of new features and bug fixes and stuff, a tremendous amount of thanks is due to blur for all his hard work in all the previous versions of JJ2+ — all but single-handedly extending the lifetime of JJ2’s multiplayer — laying the groundwork for future changes to be made, and of course being able to recognize his inability to continue development and then giving his code base into other hands. I know it can be awfully difficult to turn over the reins to something you’ve worked hard on, and blur deserves our fullest admiration and gratitude on all counts.

tl;dr: JJ2+ is not dead. JJ2 itself is not dead. Don’t go anywhere.

Great news for the lovers of JJ2 :D

I rate this newspost as 9.2. The storyline is very very good and the post contains some original features but eyecandy is average at best.

BlurredD for the win!

Nice!!!!!!!

Who’re on the team though?

[GpW]Urbs on 17 Jul 2012 at 12:20

Well I’m the teamleader ofc, but I’m afraid I can’t discuss who my underlings are… else I’d have to kill you all!!

wKtK on 17 Jul 2012 at 15:35

Great to hear this, gj BlurredD, both for making this and releasing the code.

Any chance on updating the documents (on the wiki, e.g) that describe the TCP/UDP network protocols to include more accurate jj2+ information? It would really help me with implementing plus support in Jazz25.

Anyway, I’m lookin forward to whatever you’ll release, good work sofar getting to this!

Slaz on 17 Jul 2012 at 22:26

All hail BlurredD! :D

I remember talking about the future of JJ2+ during last Bash and thought it wasn’t likely to be turned over. Good to see it turned out the other way and we may see new features! ;)

So, who’s the secret mastermind behind the project now?

Violet CLM on 17 Jul 2012 at 23:35

No one’s masterminding. Organization is informal at best. Whether that’ll work out is anyone’s guess.

Love & Thunder on 18 Jul 2012 at 23:03

So, I guess I have to say it at some point…

I wonder if there’ll be a future version of Plus with LK Avalon support… If such a version ever came along, it would make my day. :)

But, until then, good luck to the new JJ2+ Team!

On a side-note, editing the Wiki Page on JJ2+ is BROKEN!

FawFul on 20 Jul 2012 at 08:24

Great news, but i wonder if someone truly has the ability to add something equally great to jj2+ as the add-ons from blur.

and why the heck would you need LK avalon support robo? LK avalon has nothing more to offer than 1.24 originally so it’s a waste of time. and don’t go with the argument that some people only have the lk avalon version and therefore can’t use jj2+. The game is abandonware and over 14 years old by now. It’s easy to find this game on the internet.

aritra1115 on 20 Jul 2012 at 20:18

Great news for me and truly all the jj2 fans!

Love & Thunder on 20 Jul 2012 at 23:06

@FawFul Abandonware as you are using it is referring to something you refuse to buy and illegally download even though the game still retains its copyrights(In order for a game to fall into public domain from it being really old, at least 50 years must have passed since all the developers died).

And add to that that the LK Avalon version is the most widely available version of TSF, and you have a pretty good reason to add LK Avalon support.

Jgke on 21 Jul 2012 at 05:03

And yet it’s not public. Ah well, I guess it’s close enough.

Violet CLM on 21 Jul 2012 at 05:43

There’s talk about making it public, but there are security holes that need to be addressed before that can happen. Right now doing that could cause too much damage to the multiplayer scene, but it’s definitely not something that anyone’s arguing should never happen ever.

Jgke on 21 Jul 2012 at 06:34

Yeah, I can see the logic behind that.

Am I trustworthy enough for a copy? :P

Violet CLM on 21 Jul 2012 at 07:18

Do you know ASM?

Jgke on 21 Jul 2012 at 08:19

Not really. Is JJ2+ coded with it, or were you suggesting me to disassemble the .dll? :P

Violet CLM on 21 Jul 2012 at 08:34

The difficult parts are.

Jgke on 21 Jul 2012 at 08:37

Good thing I probably don’t want to touch those anyways :)

ColdMetal on 22 Jul 2012 at 02:39

ASM? Do you mean Assembly?

Jgke on 22 Jul 2012 at 05:14

Yes.

PurpleJazz on 22 Jul 2012 at 07:14

@Robo4900: I’m pretty sure Epic Games have a keen intent to sue people who download JJ2 for free, especially considering how they don’t make any money nowadays from it anyway.

Loon on 22 Jul 2012 at 12:11

The picture also has a tilebug…

But this is great news =D!

GoldRabbit on 22 Jul 2012 at 12:39

Wow.

DanZeal on 23 Jul 2012 at 09:21

Awesome

wKtK on 30 Jul 2012 at 21:34

I worked a bit with asm in the past, as well as using it to pry into jj2 itself. Other languages are also no problem.

If you trust me with the source, I would like to contribute to further plus expansions as well as adding solid plus support into my own project.

Aromunok on 1 Aug 2012 at 22:55

How can I download it?

Violet CLM on 2 Aug 2012 at 00:28

The download link for the most recent version is in this thread.

Jgke on 3 Aug 2012 at 01:31

The project still seems to be quite closed. Say, guys, have you made even a single patch yet? ;)

Violet CLM on 3 Aug 2012 at 01:45

Surely the picture at the top of the news post shows that a “single patch” has been made? But yeah, dude, we’ve got some banging stuff going on. Ever hear of a little checkbox called “Illuminate Surroundings”? Yeah. That’s right.

Olsen on 4 Aug 2012 at 23:54

That sounds effin’ sweet! Will it be something like allowing any event to give of light like the current light-events (flicker, pulse, steady etc) or something way more advanced?

Violet CLM on 5 Aug 2012 at 00:51

Well, it’s a checkbox, so there’s not much room for it to be “advanced.” There are some things I’m planning to do with Steady Light, though.

Olsen on 5 Aug 2012 at 15:01

Ah, well that sounds good. My mind went crazy with possibilities, like light not traveling past masks, but I realize that would probably require a total rewrite of the lighting engine. =)

zepect on 8 Aug 2012 at 19:58

nice

Jerrythabest on 25 Aug 2012 at 22:14

Ah, well that sounds good. My mind went crazy with possibilities, like light not traveling past masks, but I realize that would probably require a total rewrite of the lighting engine. =)

That wouldn’t be the first thing to be totally rewritten, by the looks of it.

DennisKainz on 11 Sep 2012 at 11:20

[thematic reference to bunnies]? Did the development stop? You’re [limited comprehension of the flow of time] late on the last JJ2+ version and you ALSO STOPPED DEVELOPMENT??? [limited comprehension of the ability to count]!
