Great episode, but sadly the third episode will likely never release, considering it’s been about 9 1/2 years.

From contest feedback:

+ Inspiring level theme and impressive visuals
+ Uncommon and interesting powerup choices, balanced pickups in general
+ The movable carrot gives more room for strategic play around it

- The flow is rather quirky and hard to get used to, lots of climbing on the sides of the level
- Some areas require very precise movement like the middle with blue spring and flipper pads
- The top of the level may get a bit campy and generally feels to be a bit isolated from the rest of the level (the level might be a bit too tall in general)

/ Playable in 3v3, not working in 2v2

Not rating it, because we’re in the same level group.

Copy pasted from contest feedback, note this is rated on its suitability for 2v2/3v3

+ Some unique layout in aspects (great mix of open and closed spaces)
+ Cool use of pinball
+ Cool PU scheme, although I’d like to see more fastfires if you wanna balance blaster out
+ Best flow of all the entries I’d say

- Perhaps too tall as a level, although the pinball events do remedy it directly at the middle
- Some ammo placement could definitely use reworking;
• two bouncer patches pretty much right next to eachother, above and behind bases
• seeker ammo patch at 108, 29 (and corresponding symmetrical section) in a pretty powerful chokepoint… not really too counterable
• don’t really like mixed ammo patches in the level
- I personally don’t like the areas below/behind bases and feel like truncating or removing them slightly would make this level feel less massive

Other comments:
I recommend 3v3 ONLY
Seems to cause a lot of crashes

Whilst being a very large map it does serve it’s purpose. There is plenty of eyecandy and a lot paths to traverse. Might be slightly too big for 3v3’s, but the gameplay is fun nevertheless. The map itself is quite open which might increase the airhit factor. Besides blaster and toaster powerups might not have enough firepower for this kind of size.

great tileset usage, although I fear the tileset itself suffers from a lack of shading etc – though not your fault.

cool layout, and pretty interesting theme, good work.

I particularly like the Full NRG area

A spring in this level causes your rabbit to hit a ceiling, particularly the spring obscured by flowers at {11,57} which leads to RF ammo before springing your rabbit into a masked ceiling.

Seemingly the music file in this level is censored, having abrupt silences in the song.

Rain appears to be drawn vertically but falling at a wide angle.

Gameplay:

Players can choose to move from base to base quickly through the crowded middle area, which is probably most populated together with the base areas themselves.
One can also choose for a safer but longer route from the sides by picking up a fly c and venturing through the top of the map which contains a seeker powerup which most people are too lazy to take. You can also attempt to take a flag from below, which is slightly longer but safer as few people are paying attention to this route, although its easy for them to camp the end of the tube which goes quite slowly.

Eyecandy:

Multiple layers have been filled well with stuff as original as the tileset allows. Quite a lot is happening graphically if you pay attention to it, yet it is not distracting while playing

Originality:

This level is such a relief after all those new mappool maps of last year which had similar pathways and carrot areas. Castle of Devan Shell’s layout is unique, yet it works in games and requires players to think of movements and tactics they never had to think of before. Im really glad you made this so people can be inspired by its originality for making future maps. This map is definitely worth it being played in JDC events and even possibly mappool material.

I tried to adjust my rating a bit to people’s ratings nowadays so it would be more fair, yet Im glad that others already gave you a high grade so I can stick to my principles a bit more.

Final Grade: 8.5

Here we have a level which is not too large for a casual 3vs3 match, but is also not too small to suit events with a greater number of players, though the spawntimes for the latter may not work for everyone, considering that there’s generally not too much ammo piles scattered around the level. But worry not! Those kinds of events are usually hosted with fast spawn settings enabled.

What probably makes this level stand out is the complex layout, which is more or less open at the far ends, and becomes more and more cramped the more you travel to the center of the level where, conveniently, the only carrot is, which makes the center area juicy for some close and chaotic combat. Don’t get too carried away with the chaos though, one wrong move and you may fall into the dreadly pits, so don’t just run around like a headless fly, have some control over your movement!

But don’t let the center make you feel like you should leave the outer areas out, since the outside is where the majority of the powerups are, particularly the seeker powerup at the top middle of the map, which is evenely spaced out and quite isolated and far for both teams, but such a strong and useful powerup is worth the visit to it. That’s a nice little quirk to get some more traffic in the top area, which has a whole new layer of combat since it’s accessable only with the fly carrots. However, with annoying seekers flying around, this path should be used with caution as seekers are even more useful in areal combat, but the huge pillars give the player some nice cover and a chance to utilize the environment against their opponent.

There are also blaster powerups in the walls at the far left and right. Even when you have no ammo you should always try to take one of these just in case. It’s always useful for stuff like fending the flagholder off from the bases. There’s also two electroblaster powerups but those may be less important, unless you happen to be passing by them with really low on electroblaster ammo, you never know.

Lastly, there’s the RF powerup at the bottom middle, quite impossible to miss. This is probably where the most stuff is going on, as it’s right below the carrot and in the fastest route between the bases. If you manage to snag it while it’s there, good for you, it has multiple purposes. You can use its far range to snipe someone flying far away at the top, or use it’s strong blast to get your enemies away from the carrot or bases. There you have it, some might say it’s a bit of an unusual choice of powerups but it’s different from most setups nowadays, and it certainly works with the gameplay.

Now lets get to the aesthetics! The Medivo castle theme is supported nicely with some athmospheric music from Michael van de Boos. The visuals are not at all distracting, so players can easily concentrate on their game, and if they happen to be stationary for a little while, they definitely have a lot to look at, the level is full of fun little details. You can clearly tell apart the cold, foggy blue background from the yellow-orange hot castle in the foreground, the contrast here is simply brilliant, the platforms are clearly visible in motion.

To put it all more simply: great map. An enjoyable, decent CTF level, that’ll surely leave you beside yourself and give you something different from what most popular CTF levels offer nowadays.

The flag placement is good, and the level offers some good crossroads. The tileset and music fit nicely, and the scripted eyecandy is a touch of class. I also liked the use of fly carrots and walled in powerups, as well as the Damnation background used as a fresco in the middle of the map.

The best treasure hunt level made so far, with a good layout, considerate ammo choice, well spread gems, varying environments, and decent eyecandy. Perhaps the exit could be more memorable – the level completely unnecessarily uses additional bonus signs for eyecandy, making the right one less obvious. Initial gem placement could also be better.

Great level, probably my favourite out of all contest entries.

There’s very little to criticize. The level is small and contains a good amount of gems and quite a bit of ammo too, which makes for action-packed games. There’s a clear division between the upper and lower half of the level, with the lower half seeing most of the action when I played it – this of course in part because it’s hard to dodge shots in water, and also because there’s a good amount of gems and ammo to be found.

The top of the level is easy to navigate and contains several pinball paddles which makes it possible to jump huge distances and be very mobile in general. If you’ve got about 6 players (as recommended by the author) games in this level become chaotic, full of action and a lot of fun.

The level looks great, too. Especially the upper half is well-decorated, with the eyecandy never going overboard but still making everything look great. The music fits the tileset and feel of the level really well and is a good choice here. My only criticism on this part would be that the bottom (underwater) area looks comparatively dull. This creates a good contrast between the upper and lower half, but some more decoration would perhaps have been nice.

Overall this is an excellent level that’s among the best Treasure levels out there and I’d certainly recommend hosting it whenever you’re running the game mode on your server.

Maybe I am not the best at reviews, but your map is just a joy to play. However, is not perfect.

Stuff I like:
-Great tileset
-Music matching to the map
-Large map, making it “open-world”
-The level has water
-Variety of weapons
-The map is nicely made
-Lots of details
-I didn’t encounter any visual bugs
-Pinball

Stuff I don’t like:
-The water event doesn’t always work, also the water appears suddenly
-Uhh, sorry, I can’t find any other stuff I don’t like… x(

9.7/10 – I recommend it. It’s perfect for 4-8 players.

Okay let’s review this level as a fellow contest attendee.

This is, as partly noted by the author’s description, a fast-paced level of average size with about half of it taking place underwater. There is plenty of open space to move around in on land, and mostly diagonal tunnels underwater leading to open spaces where gems, fallen from Super Reds, can splash into. Some highly visible warps are placed to increase the pace even further.

I love how there is an emphasis on pinball events in the ‘dry’ part of the level. Most gems are to be obtained by making high edge jumps on the paddles, which are sticked next to most of the vertical walls. Some bumpers are placed in line on the top, rewarding gems to those who can control bouncing off of them.

The choice of ammo is as usual for most treasure hunt levels, with some RF and a few seekers thrown in as a bonus. Eyecandy is not too exaggerated (I tend to go slightly too crazy on that myself) but good enough to make no place feel empty. The exit is in an accessible spot.

Though the author recommends 6-8 players, it’s also fun to play with 3-4 in my opinion. When everyone knows where the big gem scores are, fights will quickly appear at the underwater blue gem in the middle and the Super Reds on either sides at the top.

This is an excellent Treasure level that has pinball, and you know we love pinball :P! It has some fresh ideas, yet it’s not like a revolution in treasure hunt (but so isn’t my level). In the end, my judgment is all about fun, and fun is what you can have with this level. Here’s a solid 9 for a solid level, and download recommended!

I haven’t played this pack yet, (tbh right now I’m only downloading the 1st pack :P) but I have a question: why releasing this episode for 1.23 when the previous episode is released only for 1.24 clients?

Either release both episodes for 1.24 or do the 1st episode for 1.23 as you did here.
