Ah, Pekka Kana 2. An obscure platformer I’ve never heard about. :P After a quick Google search, I’d probably take my time to download it some day, just not now. But we’re after JJ2, amirite?

Note: The example level is quite good and all, however it doesn’t make a lot of justice to the possibilities of the tileset (to the point of not using the shaded tiles right as in the original game), but again, it’s all about the tileset!

Art:
It’s hard to review a tileset when most of the art has not been made by you, although that doesn’t prevent it from having an acceptable look… Yes, the tileset looks good, albeit somewhat lacking for Jazz’s standards – it even seems to lack some tiles from the original game. Because of this it’ll require some ingenuity to use properly. Other than that, you’ve made quite a good job converting it.
As for the npcs, I’m not sure if throwing some kittens and a random digimon (what was its name again? Bleh!) may have been the wisest of decisions, but well, the chicken is still there. Again, use your imagination.
I’ve also noticed that some of the background art from the original game (And the waterfalls – where are my waterfalls!?) is missing, but then Haunted House missed one too (Aside from a pillar and that weird noise-like thing), and it’s still a great tileset. Once again, ingenuity.
You’ve made a good job masking the tileset, by the way, although I’ve found a couple of floating bit issues – namely in one cobweb and one of the dark dirt background tiles, but other than that it’s all fine.

Usefuness:
Let’s make a list:
-Text sign? Check.
-Star blocks? Check.
-Exit sign? Somethin akin, check.
-Locked Blocks? Pekka already had some, so check.
-Eyecandy? Missing background aside, there are grass, flowers, a mushroom, stones, vines, fences, even animated tall grass! Yes, check.
-Spikes? Hmm, I guess those fans will do, so check.
-Hooks? Um, those vines may do. Check.
-Actual vines? Missing.
-”!” and weapon-specific blocks? Missing.
-Sucker tubes? Missing, albeit not necessary.
-H and V poles? Uh-oh,missing.
-Belts? There’s a conveyor belt, but it’s static, so missing!
-Background? Mis-oh wait…

Yes, this tileset lacks some essential stuff, but hey, 7 out of 12 is not that bad! It has enough stuff to go. Yet again, guess what? Imagination!

Conclussion:
This tileset is asking you to use your brains in order to use it properly (read: make a level that’s fit for JJ2). Sure, it may have its quirks and flaws, but it has its possibilities as well, as long as it’s used well. In a nutshell, it’s perfectly usable.

DR: Yes, why not.

(This is my first serious review. Please be kind.)

@TreyLina While I do agree that things like NES conversion don’t fix the artstyle, I still think if done right they can still work. However the only one to get it right so far has been hocous pocous

Well, I’m not sure how anyone could make a serious good looking level with this. The worst part of this conversion is the surrounding white and light grey pixels around it. Couldn’t you of at least got rid of those? When you add EC in the walls, you can see them quite clearly as you can in the screenshot. I don’t get how people get so worked up about bad ratings if they know it’s bad themselves. Rather than trying to make conversions with everything you can find, it’s better if you just find something that would fit well with the style of JJ2 (no more NES game tilesets please especially. Not that I have anything against the console itself although but the graphics aren’t anything pretty for JJ2), and something that you dont have to visually modify so much, that it ends up looking strange in the end. There’s not much you can do with this either. No vines, no poles, no decent background tiles, no slopes, infact so much useful tiles are not there. And some of the existing tiles aren’t really needed for JJ2. Well there’s your load of advice which is pretty much everything I’ve wanted to say about the majority of non-JJ2 related conversions.

This is a good example of a tileset that has no place being converted for JJ2. There’s no way getting around the fact that Bubble Bobble, great game as it is, is rather ugly, and it only looks uglier when you put it next to JJ2 sprites. And as the example level shows, you can’t make up for that with clever usage.

Start with 8

To the negative side: (-3) 1) Both tilesets are almost exactly the same. (-3) 2) As Toni said, You cant use these for Much of anything at all. (-2) 3) I see no particular theme

To the positive side: (+1) 1) If what you say is true, at least it’s as original-ish (+1) 2) That Monster thing is enough to be a plus, no kidding

So, I must say, i cannot recommend this. I might think it over with an example level.

wait a bit.. I need to play Halfquake and HalfJazz amen, (even if I don’t know what they are.. games/tilesets etc. and even if I perhaps don’t have them) and then I must rate? Isn’t it easier to check out posibilities with this tileset in JCS (and I see on preview that there aren’t too much, so just I will rate preview) without playing Halfquake and HalfJazz amen? Heh. Let’s start reviewing this.

You can’t use this tileset if you wanna make some better level. You can use this only in tests.. and nowhere other if I am right. You have 3 types of background (one is even animated with too much tiles… I am not sure if you can make them all in JCS :P ) and between 3 types of background,, you have NO connection. Well, they don’t need to have connection, but they are really out of theme… if there is a theme in this tile set. I am not sure if anyone will use this useless tileset without possibilities to make something better.

Well, after this, I wanna say, you can’t play normal matches in that level on screenshoots because of palettes.. there is not normal JJ2 palette. Use JPS to make them. And try to make tile set with more colors than 10 (or 15 in this tileset).

Then, I am not sure (sorry if I am wrong), but, I don’t think you made that letters yourself. Probably you pirated them from that game, or from some other image/game. Try to make tiles on your own. Don’t think, if you pirate some tiles from other games and if you find some nice screen shots, that JJ2 Community will not know about it ;P.

Also, don’t waste your time to check out this tileset, you will not see anything good here (sorry, but it is true :( ). I don’t recommend you guys to download this.

@Feaw: Well ty :) here are still some normal persons :D.
