Wow….

Eyecandey:
HOLY Shit! The eyecandey is asome. Even for the space levels Mike used every last bit of eyecandey you can get in all of the tilesets he used! He used lots of eyecandey in the backround but most of the eyecandey is in the sprite layer. He did it so well the orbital base looks like a orbital base! It really looks like something you would see in a futuristic movie. Mike also used lots of special effects and cutseens. He did things That I didn’t even know were possible with Jazz 2! Great work!
10/10
Gameplay:
Jaw drop. Wow. This is asome! There’s lots of enemys in the pack making it difficult but not impossible. The ammo and food placement is amazing as there’s enough ammo to play thought the episode and the food is used so well that you can only get a sugar rush every 3 or 4 levels. On hard mode there’s more enemys and things like that. I like how he made it a little easier on easy. The puzzles are amazing. Even though most of then are trigger crate puzzles the way you have to destroy them are amazing. The opening doors are cool and the boss battle with Devan is so epic. The levels are long. Like the Deserto Orbital Base is about 30 minutes long! There’s lots of traps and the bonus warps are hard to access. There’s lots of secrets and the storyline is amazing. The cutseens are amazing and there’s lots of levels. The enemies are put in stretegic locations and the choses are very well done. Great job mike!

I have played this pack before and decided to play through from Episode 1 all the way to 3. Unfortunately, I now get an Amnesia Error when I go to Level 7 (The Castle). I’m using 1.23+. I did save before LV7.

BTW, how do you do the deliberate Access Violations in Painful Purple Place?

EDIT: I used the original 1.23 and it worked.
The access violations are random.

I’m a crazy person.

No I mean REALLY CRAZY.

I did it on hard three days after it came out!

You are awesome Evilmike.

And I am crazy.

Now for the REVIEW portion of this post! Heh.

This was defenitely ā€œThe Best Of The Trilogyā€ As it went very heavily on the saving the world bit and less on the save my home bit. The storyline made you want to continue on through the levels no matter how frustrating they were and build up to an interesting cutscene.

This statement emphasizes on your mission briefing idea. The words just typed themselves out as if the computer you see is what Jazz is seeing as if in your body.

No levels were disconnected. The whole story just began to flow after the first cutscene.

The eyecandy is no less amazing than it was in The Rebirth Of Evil or the original of which the name of it surpasses me.

The gameplay – Still awesome.

I can’t wait for the sequel… To the sequel… To the sequel…

To the original level pack of which the name of it surpasses me.

Apart from using of Jazz 1: Ihlvndi tilesets i like your the secret level, your ā€œThe Castleā€ level, but i liked so much the smart way you used in Jazz 1: Ihlvndi and the way you use it to create the ā€œTempleā€ tileset. Good job!

EDIT: I’ve completed the series, forget my last review.

(Im rating this level pack but i am reviewing the whole series so far)

Evilmike i have played your whole level pack so far. I here you plan to do 5 episodes. But THIS is THE best single player series ever. No other single player i know of could rival this. The series has significantly inspired me into making my own single player. The revisiting of levels made this seem like a completely new game. I’ve never seen anything like that. The layout of Rebirth of Evil and Battle for Carrotus definatly is a key thing in this series. My most favorite levels were Deserto Orbital base, the fleet level, SWS Fencer (i can’t remember the exact name), SWS Terrapin (again i can’t remember the exact name) and Carrotus. This seems to be the whole level pack that i like but when i said Deserto Orbital Base i meant the second level in rebirth of evil.

Overall i thing that this is the number one source of entertainment. This episode is the most realistic in the series for sure.

Absolutly YES download this level pack. If you don’t then that’s just plain mad.

You know what, FORGET jazz jackrabbit in 3D. This is the REAL sequal to jazz jackrabbit 2, yes THE REAL sequal to jazz jackrabbit 2. Not jazz jackrabbit 3 or advanced. THIS level pack!

Hmm. This gets finished right when I’m not around to see it ;P.

Anyways, a lot of the important stuff has already been stated. This is heavily story based, so the majority of the levels are short cutscenes (which actually contain a lot of innovation and are quite interesting). This is great from a storyline perspective, but means that there’s less actual levels to play (although I should confess that I actually enjoyed finding out what the other rabbits said about me in the orbital base scenes). The levels themselves are also not as long as the levels in the previous packs (Deserto Orbital Base can basically eat all these levels and still have room for dinner) so the amount of time it takes to play through this is significantly shorter than the other packs. However, the levels themselves are very enjoyable and well constructed, and full of interesting ideas.

One thing that particularly pleased me in this pack was the focus of creativity being more on the events then the eyecandy or other miscellanea. It was very refreshing to play through a level full of creative obstacles then a level that the creator spent all their time on making it pretty. In terms of the actual gameplay content this pack contained virtually everything a good platform game should have, and is a refreshing and welcome change from generic heavily detailed levels. The difficulty was also perfect (I played on normal mode, at least). I found myself dying a handful of times, yet during no point of the actual experience did I feel frustrated enough by an obstacle to cheat, and carrots and savepoints were placed in the right locations. In general, there was a lot of innovation in this pack, which played a key part in making this pack stand well out from the crowd.

The eyecandy looked good enough, but it did clearly take a back seat while the gameplay and eventing took the lead role. There was also not as much variety due to setting this pack takes place in (although this isn’t as severe as Invasion of Deserto), but the levels themselves engaged you well enough that this did not turn out to be a problem at all.

I would not say that any of these levels completely stands out from the others (although SWS Fencer was probably the longest and Holographic Training was quite an experience itself), which is alright, but the pack could have used the inclusion of some monumental work (perhaps a large level taking place during a large battle between Carrotus and Shellion warships?) especially since it’s not too long content wise. An important (relevant) boss battle could have also been added to symbolize a climax of the episode (EP1 had the rocket turtle threatening to demolish a large city, EP2 had the return of devan) however the episode flows together well enough as it is. Some levels also seem shorter then they should be, namely SWS Anapsid.

To conclude the review, I really did enjoy playing through these levels. They were designed very well and incorporated various elements that made them special and enjoyable. There is a lot of innovation involved in everything here, ranging from the levels to the interestingly made cutscenes to the very interesting tileset. Mike certainly did take advantage of a lot of features of JCS and this episode effectively demonstrates why it is essential to pay attention to innovation in eventing and gameplay and not just stack truckloads of eyecandy in every layer. This also makes good use of cutscenes and hopefully will set an example for future plot-guided packs to follow.

I’m giving this a 9.3. This pack contains a lot of creativity, solid level construction, enjoyable obstacles, and a good story to back it all up. One wishes it could have maybe been slightly longer or more climatic, though.

There’s really no reason that you shouldn’t download and play this.

I feel no need to write a formal review so I’ll just state my thoughts.

This is the first of one of the great impacts this year has to offer. This is definitely a revolutionary piece of work for this community. I don’t think any other platformer has a story quite like this besides the other two episodes. This episode seems to have more characterization than the last two, which ofcourse adds to the aspect of caring about them. Not to say the storyline is driven by dialouge, and some of it seems unrealisitic in a few situations.

I don’t really care if the ā€˜eyecandy’ or whatever you may call it is bland. I think it fits well within the storyline and atmosphere and thus a more ā€˜spectacle’ look would not fit quite as well.

Oh yeah, I personally think the briefing scenes would’ve probably benefitted without music playing as I feel there’s more atmosphere without.

I’ll post a full review here later but I wanted to let give people a warning.

Do NOT play this with a hacked jazz2.exe. When I first played this I ran into numerous errors (no errors occur in multiplayer). You should play with the original 1.23 without any modifications to be safe.

Otherwise Mike maintains his high standards with this pack and this will not disappoint. Download immediately.

The third installment in EvilMike’s series of level packs comes with a well-understood precedent of quality and innovation. If you haven’t played Invasion of Deserto or Rebirth of Evil yet, you really should before playing this, however it’s not very necessary. The plot continues but you can pick up this installment fresh and have little trouble understanding anything. This is especially good because this pack is very heavily story based. The main bulk of the levels are, in fact. However, the narration has several different methods through which it is conveyed, so it doesn’t get monotonous.

The main theme of the pack is a sort of militarized space. The levels are designed logically and yet remain very versatile and organic. There’s only one level that uses a more organic feel, but even that has a twist.

As I stated, the bulk of the individual levels are for story purposes. The ones with more regular gameplay are quite excellent, however. They are chock full with all the necessary elements for a good level to remain fun and entertaining. Enemies, puzzles, and platform obstacles are well placed and paced. Ammo and goodies are usually well placed as well. Although there are several levels that are substantially large, the annoying memory bug that doesn’t let you save your game is usually moot.

This pack is a bit of a challenge. I played it once on Normal and once on Easy, and both of them were tricky in some places. That’s how a good level should be though. I never tried Hard mode but I can imagine it must be quite a challenge.

Although some may argue that the previous packs were better for this or that reason, this is still a welcome addition to the ongoing saga. Lots of innovation and creative story telling. I can remember playing and wondering why Epic couldn’t harness the full potential jj2 has to offer.

The eyecandy can be a little drab sometimes, but as I said, it has a space sort of theme. There’s not a huge amount of room for extra details in that sort of environment.

The music choice is rather flawless although some songs can get old quickly in large levels. I usually prefer to keep sound off during jj2, but the music added well so I kept it on.

In summary, this is an excellent download that I recommend. Play the the first two releases in the series first if you can. It has some minor flaws, but over all the quality is very good and the work shows. And it’s all backed up by a good storyline.

Why are there ratings like 9.2, 8.2 and 7.0? It’s just a pointless palette edit!

This conversion has a sort of spooky, dead, dreary theme of Diamondus. All the colours have been changed to really boring shades of greys, browns and purples. The BG stuff is completly black and white, making it look dull and boring. The grassy stuff has been changed to a yucky shade of pale green/brown. The soil is now a very pale shade of purple, which doesn’t appeal to me either. You should of used more/better colours. Nothing has been changed on the technical side; everything still has the same flaws. The only new thing are 3 tiles saying: ā€œTileset by Evilmikeā€.
This set is actually worse than the original Diamondus. I suggest you don’t make any more conversions and make some really good SP levels instead.

No Download Recommendation.
