Well, 9 levels. I have to say you really had some interesting and good ideas. The problem was that these ideas weren’t done well. I think there were too many open areas, which were really confusing after a while. Trying to make a level more challenging with regenerating enemies ads to the difficulty but doesn’t add to the fun of the level. And anyway what were you thinking on the first level I had to fight about 12 queens to pass the level. What about the pickups? There were hardly any some coins carrots very minimal ammo some 1 ups and nothing else. Also putting 5-6 enemies in an area where you’ve got 1 block space to move isn’t a good thing either. Another thing, you could at least put some signs to help the player know where he should go. There were some glitches as well at certain warp areas.
But at least you could use the tilesets properly. So as I said these are levels with some very good ideas which could have been done better.
My rating is 5.7. This means your pack was good enough for not being crap, but bad enough for me not to give it a download recommendation.
EDIT: I replayed the levels. As you said they were made to be difficult but the last 2-3 were well, something way harder than “difficult”. About the 12 queens, I didn’t actually count them last time I just wanted to point out the fact that I had to battle a lot of them (now I’m quite certain there were more than 15). Certain bats keep respawning in every level btw. And as you asked, I will mention that the warps were glitchy in the carrotus level where the “warp target” put you in a place with 1 block space. Warp target should be somewhere with 8 empty tiles around you otherwise the player will get stuck in the wall. I think I met some of those glitchy warps in the medivo level as well.
Also most boss fights were in really tight spaces which were full of bats. I know you wanted the levels to be challenging but that’s too much.
Could you play through all the levels btw?
Anyway last time I think I made it to the 3rd level without cheats, but since I wanted to see the whole pack (because I don’t want to review something I haven’t even played through and give an unaccurate rating) I just used the health cheat to check out the other levels. The first 6 levels are so-so but the rest are just impossible. The player just feels that he/she is squeezed through a mousehole and then he gets 4-5 bats that respawn in 8 seconds.
Anyway like I have already mentioned the lack of pickups is a big problem. For me the levels would have been much more fun if there were at least a minimum amount of stuff to get. Without them it was just running around in a nearly empty level. Also I noticed that most of the time the 1 ups lead to dead ends from where I couldn’t get out.
All together the levels look ok or interesting in some cases but when it come to playing you’ll notice that it’s unfairly hard. The puzzles are sometimes quite creative but other times you brake a trigger crate and don’t even know if you’ve screwed up something or did something that will help in continuing the level. Though as a positivity I can admit that I didn’t lose my interest in the levels since I was really curious to see all of them (unlike the last single player level I tried)
Sorry but I can’t give a higher rating than 6. For second time it was slightly a bit more fun than last time. I hope you will still make levels as this one wasn’t that bad for a start and I’m sure you are able to improve. Next time try to target the average players (believe me it’s not a hard task to get a good rating from me :D), just don’t forget pickups.
There’s no way I’m giving this level less than 10. Actually I consider it 11/10. This is the best level I’ve ever played. Tileset is awesome as well as the music you chose for it. I enjoyed finding secrets and coins. Also if I was careful enough i could pick up everything. Seemed like trying to get 100% items and enemies like in Jazz 1.
[This is a tileset, not a level. Thus the only content in your review is “tileset is awesome” and that’s just not good enough. ~Violet]
Well, i have to say this is a really cool level.I really liked the tileset you would almost think this is an original tileset from Jazz 1. Reminds me of an upgraded technoir level which is a very good thing for me since technoir is my favorite from Jazz 1.The items were also well placed though I have to mention the level lacked secrets and gems.
Great work. And thanks to you I found the secret on turtemple 2.
Nice work, though the cat platforms on the first level were annoying, but never mind.
Not too bad, though bees and rocks are not a good combination. Also putting a warp right after the coin warp area is not a too good idea. I didn’t find any saving points either which would be rather important on a level with bees. All together it’s a solid level.
[Review changed to quick review. ~cooba]
Well, not the best level I’ve played. Though I have to mention that it has some good ideas and parts, though it lacks ammo and health. Flamethrower was good against the bugs but wasn’t really helpful at the boss fight. Also I don’t think Devan was the appropriate boss for the level.
Even though I wouldn’t recommend the downloading of this level, I can’t tell you not to try it as well. It isn’t that bad just lacks certain things that would make it a better level.
Thanks for the review Bloody_Body. I remember spending quite a lot of time with this level. It took quite long, since I only had time every day after school. I believe I was trying to make a really big and long level with a lot of secrets splitting paths to add to the replay value. I wasn’t too good with the eye candy when making it, but after Loon’s review I added some to make the tileset a little less boring also repairing the mentioned bugs and flaws.
Anyway, glad you liked it. Maybe I’ll make some new levels in the future. I just haven’t had time since finishing secondary school.
I have to say these are very good levels. While playing I felt like I was on the original levels. They have very good music especially the first level, good eyecandy and you deal well with the tilesets. I even found a bonus level which reminds me of the JJ1 bonus level (no enemies, can’t die, full of goodies). Also i found a great amount of secrets (probably there are even more that i didn’t find). The medivo level was a bit short and weird but whatever (kinda reminded me of medivo 2 from JJ1). Difficulty: not too hard not too easy. I don’t remember dieing but my health definitely went to 1 a few times. It’s a must try for JJ2 single player fans.
Download definitely recommended.
Download definitely recommended. It’s a nice level with very good music. I really enjoyed it.
Quite enjoyable. I liked the levels. They are similar to the original levels (which I personally think are good). You should have put saving points in your levels. It’s quite important for a level that has bees as enemies.
I really enjoyed your level. Though the lack of health made it a bit hard despite the fact that it was quite and easy level. The boss was a bit tough to fight underwater. Apart from that I must say it’s worth downloading this level.
EDIT:
I remember that I couldn’t write a full review because of some kind of error on the site when I first checked this, but now I’ll do it.
Eyecandy: I really liked the eyecandy in this level. It really looked cool. All layers were used. I found one tileglitch though at (12;32) though it’s nothing important and hardly noticeable. Also I think the tileset you used was a perfect choice.
Gameplay: The trigger part was a good idea. I found it really enjoying. The secret places were well placed and visible most of the time. Some were tricky though but nothing impossible.
Pickup placement: Apart from coins I found all the pickups that a normal single player level needs. They were placed well and as I’ve mentioned there were quite a few secrets with these pickups. Most health carrots could be found there actually. RF missiles were useful against the boss.
Enemy placement: They were well placed in my opinion, especially the dragon flies. Since there were some places with small moving space, ground enemies could also be dangerous if you moved too fast. Difficulty was also appropriate since the amount of carrots made up for the little health you lost.
Music: I liked the music, it went well with the level though I found it a bit loud compared to the effects of the game but who cares anyway.
Download definitely recommended. This is fun level that you will enjoy.
