Ok, enough with the negativity here! some people just look at the bad sides with looking at the good ones (I’m not saying names, that would be a personal attack) Anyway, here’s what I think of this set…

Considering this is made in MS Paint (yes, the infamous program which a reputation of having made bright, limited colored sets), the colors are actually nicely done, which scores extra points in my book. Unfortunately, that’s all there is. The tileset itself is pretty basic, as mentioned in earlier reviews, with just ground, blocks, and some signs. No background, eye candy, nothing to increase the appeal of a level, aside from a bone in the ground, but that’s it: nothing. The example level only shows you how you can use the set and some facts about it.

On an interesting note, I’ve read the readme (as always, reviewers should make a habit of that, there is a point to making them. Heck, even the name of the zip file says you should read it) and it was all about how he got inspiration, how he loved 24… And it says he can draw well, he even drew mangas (Japanese comics for the unknowing). I believe that if he had the proper tools, he could become like Agama, but that’s just me :p

Verdict:
Back to the set. Overall, the rating is on a borderline, just because of the good colors in Paint (I’m a sucker for those, I know). The only thing I can do is suggest these things: get a free copy of Paint Shop Pro somewhere, it works much better than Paint. Secondly, take a good look at tilesets of others (I suggest Agama, Disguise and Blade), especially at the eye candy they put in. I can only give it a 5, because I’m nice :)

Gee, I haven’t rated a battle in like forever..Ok, let’s see if I can make an UNbiased review (I case you didn’t know, those who helped making the level are not allowed to rate)

Ok, what we have here is a basic sized battle with J1 Diamondus. The set is however not fully used: the level misses mountain backgrounds, gems in the ground and in the walls. Speaking of background, the “black things” in the 3D background are actually clouds. Seems layer 7 is also 3D (never a good idea, use only layer 8 for 3D).
The level itself is decent: hardly any dead ends, the platforms seems to be placed on a circle. Ammo placement is ok to me, there are some powerups (1 or 2 is recommended, don’t exceed the number tho).

Verdict: all in all not too bad, but not great either. I’d say medium: a 6. Next time use only only layer 8 for 3D effect, the other layers are glitched.

- JelZe GoldRabbit

P.S. I’m not saying you shouldn’t use layers 5 to 7 at all, I’m saying you should only use layer 8 as 3D Textured Background. And I know you can get rid the black spots by turning it off, how would I know they were clouds without looking in JCS (looking in JCS is a sin to me)? But turning the Textured background off to get rid of the spots would ruin the idea of having one, right? ;)[This review has been edited by JelZe]

Ouch that hurt my ears even more. :S

Ok, I’ll make this short: this remix is terrible, even more than the other (Lizardry Wizardry). It suffers from the same symptoms, mentioned in my other review: instruments don’t fit, tempo is off, too fast (the other was too slow, bare with me here :S). The only good thing was that funny speeded up voice you hear when you have repeat on off (Winamp anyone? I use ModPlug).

Verdict:
Yet, again, no good rating, this remix doesn’t improve on the original. Sorry, a 3.5 for the effort ( +.5 for the squeaky voice)

Ouch, that hurt my ears :s

Unless I’m very much mistaking, this is a remix of the JJ1 Secret song (i.e. the music of the Deserto secret level, where Jazz is turned into a lizard. So the name does make sense, people). And it’s a bad one (Never thought I’d say that). The instruments don’t fit the song at all, the tempo is too mild, too slow for the original mood of the song. Sorry, I just can’t give this a good rating.

Verdict:
My filosophy for remixes is: a good remix improves on the song. In that point of view, this remix lacks severely. No recommendation at all. Rating: 4

Two reviews in a day, this is really getting to me :P

Sluggion is the 3rd or 4th J1 remix TIMM has on its name (I still think Orbitus is the best) And I have to say this: it’s not that bad, still it could some improvements. The beginning is good, with slomo voice like a slime monster’s (or a slug), I’ll give you that, but the rest well… let’s say it goes some what downhill as the song goes on. I won’t name them all, but one thing really bothered me: repeating samples over and over. I don’t know about you, but I just don’t like hearing the same thing over and over. O, one thing really struck me: if anyone has played JJ1, then you may have noticed that the Sluggion song has a sample in the game that is not there, or is glitched in the .s3m version. I’m talking about the part 0:53-1:01 in the original. Listen to it :)

Verdict:
What can I say? Not bad, but not that good if you ask me. I’ll be mild with 6.5-7

I’m quite a music lover myself, so I’ll give a decent review :P

This is the, what, 3rd or 4th remix TIMM has made, after Orbitus (which still remained the best) and Megairbase (slightly crazy for an airbase, but the original was like that too :P)
TIMM did a nice job with the J1 Medivo song. Yes, the tempo is fast (Medieval Jam tempo that is ;p), but it’s doesn’t subtract or add that much. The samples sound a little out of place if you ask me, but the writers were nice enough to put in some thunder sounds, so I’ll overlook that :p The only thing that bothered me was repeating samples over and over with a different sphere in the back. The Jazz 2 Medivo part they could have left out, but it’s nice as a bonus I think…

Verdict
Well it’s quite enjoyable, and since Medivo is one of my favorite songs, I won’t be too harsh: 7-7.5 Keep up the the good work :)

Just as I expected: another edited Battle 1. We’ve all seen thousands of those, and most were very bad.

I’d say this is one of the better ones. As some may already know, the top half of battle 1 is empty. The author tried to fill that area with platorms and goodies (fast fire and switch are two of them). That’s one thing he added. Like others, he created new passages, making some areas more accessible (the one near the bounce powerup is a good example of that). He fairly succeeded in that area. How ever, the eye candy in those new passages could use some work. Also, I noticed a faulty level setting to 222.j2l.

Verdict:
What can I say? The author did put some effort in making battle more “playable” and he fairly succeeded in that. However, this is an edited level so I’ll have to subtract points for that. Nevertheless, he has potential. Some work on his eye candy and he’s good to go. The level itself I can’t rate, the modifications, well… I’d say 5

Level rating: 7.9

7.7

Ok, I’ll review this decently for heaven’s sake…unlike Waz just did…

Theme:
It seems space tilesets are becoming famous again (or still are), it’s Jazz 1 Battleships (for the fanatics, it’s the last episode’s last world).

Contents:
Well, everything from the old Jazz 1 game is there, plus some extra stuff, like poles and destructable blocks. CelL could have at least added a conveyor belt, since it’s a technical set. O, did I forget to mention the grey/blue planet for in the background? (actually it’s Scraparap’s moon)
O, CelL also put in an example, poorly made though. It doesn’t show what you can really do with the set.

Masking:
Masking is ok, no bumps, just straight. And of course messages hidden in the masks are there, though less than previous ones. I’ll name them here:
- “foo” in one of the golden barrels
- a spider in the wall next to the Central CPU
- “hi” in the star block
- the location of the world in Jazz 1
- a bicycle in the fire of the engines

User-friendlyness:
Like all Jazz 1 tilesets, this set is blocky, which makes it pretty easy to use. And the eye candy is pretty basic, as always with JJ1 tilesets.

Verdict:
Well, what can I say? A decent conversion by CelL. I don’t have a scorelist (too lazy! :P), so I’ll just give it a 7.7 for now.

Now now, don’t go put oil onto that fire.

Leole, I think you’re missing a point here. Creating good levels requires a lot of patience. Do you honestly think good levels can be made in an instant? No, a good level takes about 15 hours (at least!) to make, levels created with in that time are generally speaking not that good (there are exceptions, trust me). I believe there’s an article about making good levels, if I find I’ll gave you the link.

- JelZe GoldRabbit

P.S. I’m doing not to tease, I just this fight to end.

P.P.S. It seems there was no article about making good levels, I got a even better link:

Yet again, another perfect conversion from Violet, this time of Candion, HH95 planet 1

While we’ve seen many conversions of Candion (Dethman (QoB), Astronia (along with Exoticus) and other “automasked” versions) I must say this one’s the best. Not only does it have all the tiles, Violet added (again) Destruct scenery (not that good, looks like it’s made in Paint), vines, etc. I think the only thing missing is the kitchen sink ;)

This is worth an 8. Tell if I’m being too modest :)

Either Stiletto has gone mad, or someone hacked into his account…

Unless I’m very much mistaking, this is Aiko’s kind of level. It’s very open, it has nice eye candy, 3 powerups (electro or pepper always do 1 damage, powered up or not. 1 power up would have sufficed btw)…The neat thing is it’s settled in a lava river: you have to be carefull not to fall in it, or you get sent back to the top of the level. The music file, “Astray Voyages” by Purple Motion (1250 kb, a bit too big for my tastes) fits the level quite well.

Conclusion: not a bad level, especially for those who love open levels. Download recommemdation from me.

Possibly the best conversion ever made of Jazz Jackrabbit 1 tileset. :)

Now, this tileset has every tile of planet Nippius (even the shredder in the secret level), and more. Appearantly Violet wasn’t satisfied with just basic tiles and added:
- animations (like Violet said, more than half is animated, barely noticable, though)
- sucker tubes
- vines
- destruct blocks (count-down too :))
- poles (Horizontal only, shame)
- hooks (the graphic should be a bit lower ;))

For the rest there’s nothing to say. Download, check out (the example level too).

o, btw next time include a Jazz 1 song in “Song*.s3m” format.

Ok, I’ll rate this since noone else dares to…

Well, to be honest, I’d say this is a more mellow version of the Technoir song. Too mellow for my tastes, Technoir (pronounced TechnoWar) should have a more..violent song (it’s a war zone out there).
Still the author did a nice job of remixing. He doubled the amount of patterns for the intro (me likes, gets you into the song), replaced instruments (some are better than the original) even his voice is in it (?) And guess what: it says in the details some samples are by Alexander Brandon (the JJ2 and JJ3 musician) How about that?

Conclusion:
Not bad, with some tweaking it can be improved. Not the kind of music I’d use for a level, just for listening. A 7 with a .2 bonus (for trying)

Nat, why a 4? Don’t just give a rating, review it! Maybe I’ll get an admin to delete it…

Anyway, to my review now

Basicly this set doesn’t look that bad. Not much variety in the tiles, they have good textures however. (I even saw a happy face :-)) Nice sucker tubes, hooks in the shape of candy canes, balloons and even sprites from the game (Jazz, spaz and Bubba) make the rest of the set. O yeah, giant signs? That’s…original? And I assume Disguise did the masking, I can tell by the messages in the masking ;)

Conclusion: not that bad, it could use some more background tiles. All in all it’s worth a 6.5

Woot, first review again! :p

Yet another TSF Tubelec level by Yin Yang. Believe me, this level needs improving! It’s pretty ok for a race level if you want pure speed, linear, he did put some curves in it (keep that up, Yin Yang), some ice and springs. That’s it. One major downfall (take that literally, folks) can be found at the end, the H-spring tunnel. You can jump over it, and the end fall the way down, putting you out of the race. If Yin Yang only covered it up…hardly any eye candy if i might add (bg from official level again)

Another bad thing is the file size: 1 Mb. The author used the JJ3 tune “Green Target” (Tube.it), that explains the size. I don’t mind that, it fits, but next time, NO JJ3 music for levels! They are simply TOO BIG!

Yet another low rating. Next time, spend MORE TIME on your levels. At least a WEEK!

Lemme tell you this, mirrow should get bored more often :p j/k Like the name said, it’s a ball themed tileset, with lots of spheres. Pretty colorfull with red and blue striped platforms, green pipes, red poles…basicly everything a tileset needs is there. That alone is worth a 7, but the new theme, a bonus 0.5 points :)

Ok, just because I’m so nice (and can’t stand those short non-descriptive reviews and that shouting of yin yang) I’ll review this properly, unlike you I’ll-make-this-preview- so-I’ll-be-rid-of-that-author-who-can’t-make-levels-at-all kind of ppl.

Well, the first thing i saw about this battle level was that it was linear, or platfrom. a bit no no for battle levels. one long road at the beginning with a canyon with smal platforms at the end. Also, the author placed large areas of the same ammo at serveral places. That’s all there’s basicly to it. I can tell it’s made from an official unfinished level (Tube3 IIRC) and it was made in a hurry.

All in all, I can’t give higher than a 2.5, I’m afraid. Keep on practicing, yin yang, and study other good battle or CTF levels (I suggest rating 8 or higher). Also, would you mind not shouting at the reviewers? They are only doing their job to help you build better levels. If you keep on shouting, you’re likely to get banned.
