To anyone using this in the future: if editing the bmp files this tool extracts in Photoshop, Photoshop will save them with four trailing hex 00s at the end. I have no idea why it does this, but it alters the file size and causes everything to be offset by 1 pixel, causing some nasty streaking. If you want to use this tool and Photoshop, make your edits to the bmp, save it, and then open it in a hex editor like HxD and delete (not clear, but delete) the last four zeros from the file. You can then repack them to BLOCKS.000 or whatever without issue.

Other than that, very useful too, has been fun making some tweaks to the tilesets.

I’ve never actually needed to use any of the tools included with this, but the information on JJ1’s file formats alone is invaluable – this is an essential collection of files if you want to do anything with JJ1 that’s not playing it or creating new levels (and even then it might still be useful)

Meh, this causes more problems than solves them. Causes graphical glitch on the Deckstar boss, really messes up the Dreempipes and Laguncius ones, screws up the audio pitch on Ceramius, etc.

Most of the programs have text files with them describing their use. They’re pretty basic (No pun intended.) You put them in the Jazz 1 folder, run them and type in a file name.

I’d like to improve on these, but I just don’t know any other way to program and I’m too busy to learn.

Wow, I’m impressed that someone actually uploaded a JJ1 level. I had one in progress too, but it wasn’t finished. (I actually made it because I accidentally deleted the first level of Technoir – send it to me via electronic mail if you can)

Enemies:
Long live the Diamondus bees and turtles! Doubble Dutch also outfitted them with brand new golden shells, so they look like they came from the Battleships. Nice. However, there are far more turtles than there are bees, so shooting gets a little boring after a while.

Weapons:
In spirit of JJ1, the player gets more weapons than he or she needs. Better many than nothing. Unfortunately, there is more ammo for Toaster than there is for any other weapon.

Layers/Eyecandy:
The modified Diamondus tileset is used really well, as far as JJ1 allows. The background is very groovy, and so are the lava waterfalls. The robot from One Must Fall also takes place in this level.

Secrets:
What would be a level without secrets? Those who read the JJ1 manual will feel like at home – if you come across a dead end, shoot it! Actually, I was rather disappointed at the end of the level, because the level was fun and I wanted more. Fortunately, I discovered a secret which brought me another extra minute of gameplay.

Extras:
I was somewhat surprised by the hole at the start of the level, and it made me lose one life. A similar thing happened later, after I shot a checkpoint. There is a bug in JJ1 which makes you lose two lives if you fall to the bottom of the level after you shot a checkpoint. The level was also hard, like most JJ1 levels. This is probably caused by the lower resolution and more enemies. Fortunately, you have plenty of Toaster ammo available.

Final Rating: 8.0
Download Recommendation: Of course!

I love the lava like waterfalls. And the background sure gives it a nice twist. You should look into this if you want to see something different in Jazz1.
The level seems to be some really strange edit of the first Jazz1 level. Although it is hardly recognizable.

“It will overwrite your default files, so back them up first.” Use JSwapper! :D

DD takes the rainbow background from the Xion is Wrong edit and runs with it, brightening up other aspects of the tileset, changing colors, etc. It looks pretty, if could use maybe a few more caves. The design is complex, if nothing revolutionary. Support JJ1!

I was browsing levels and I noticed that since these levels weren’t actually rated and only a few jj1 levels were actually made, I decided to rate them. That and the fact that jazz1 levels are a pain in the neck to create more than justifies this review.

Eyecandy
————

Pretty good. When moving from one area to the next, tiles seem to flow into the next. One minute you’re in a yellow cavern and the next you’re in a darkened open area with suckertubes. Background tiles are used in a unique fashion giving each of these areas a real unique feel. This gets an 8 here.

Originality
—————-

These levels were clearly just modified versions of the originals, so this takes a toll here. However, the fast cloud moving sparks and moving electrical barriers add to these fast paced levels. The shootable ground shooters add a nice touch for if they are carefully taken out, doing so can make a particular area much easier.

This gets a 7.0

Fun
—-

Albeit these levels are fast paced, they aren’t just shoot-kill-move-to-the-next-area kind. The levels breathe of many secret areas and sidepaths that house a plethora of goodies and baddies. Some spots are arranged in such a way that if you move too fast then they send you back to earlier parts of the levels, so the gameplay doesn’t drag you down.

8.5 here.

Layout
———

Platforms are well placed and allow easy access to the next area. Some spots have difficult to climb platforms or obstacles to get to secret areas. Ammo placement is good as well and the length adds to the level’s overall funness. However, although each area is original, the player feels like he’s in a suckertube half the time, causing everything to pass by in a blur.

7.5 here.

Summary
———-

The levels aren’t very memorable, but you certianly enjoy playing them.

Overall: 7.7

Note: These levels are for the shareware version only.

please stop making jj1 stuff lots of people dont have it

(Lots of people do have JJ1. In any case, it doesn’t matter, because this is based on levels in the shareware version. Just download the JJ1 demo and play this pack using that. ~Violet)
