(transferred from old version due to Trafton’s request)
EYECANDY/RELATED CATEGORIES:
FOREGROUND LAYERS:
There is nothing in the foreground layers. Of course, this is to be expected, as JJ1 never had a foreground, so you are unlikely to have usable foreground eyecandy in JJ1 tilesets (an exception that comes to mind is Haze’s JJ2 Muckamo), but still, a few trees or something might have been nice.
Reupload: For the most part, this remains unchanged. About the only foreground I can see are a couple of trees in front of some layer 3.
SPRITE AND SPRITE FOREGROUND LAYERS:
Layer 4 is just about all there is. While the author seems to have replicated all the platforms, not much attempt is made to make the level look all that nice. This is sad, because under ordinary circumstances, JJ1 Diamondus can produce some very nice looking levels. The strictly platform design of the level hampers this a bit, though, so I will not come down on this problem as hard as I could. In other news, there are a few interesting things here and there, mainly at the bottom (if such attention to detail was spent in other layers, and the rest of the level, this might have turned out better).
Reupload: This basically stayed the same.
BACKGROUND (5-8) LAYERS:
Pretty much empty. Layer 8 consists of an attempt to make JJ1Diamondus’ background textured (which looks ok in 16-bit, but blah in 8), and the other three have pretty much nothing at all. None of JJ1 Diamondus’ black mountains, or the little starry things, or improvised stuff. Really, the background is positively barren.
Reupload: The author has changed the background to the more conventional pipes, and added lots of clouds, which looks a little strange at first, but you get used to it. Still no mountains, but at the bottom you’re surrounded by trees, which is kind of overdone, really. Maybe a few in the foreground, but this army of trees behind you is too much.
TILE BUGS IN ANY OF THE AFORE-MENTIONED LAYERS:
Due to the lack of just about any layers other then 4, I suppose there is a lack of tile bugs in any layers other then 4, unless you count a lack of tiles as a tile bug. As for layer 4, there are indeed a few bugs which could concievably be ironed out. First among these is the grass. Sometimes it alternates between tall and not-so-tall grass (you may know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen the tileset) without using the tiles that connect them together, ending up in a way which doesn’t look incredible. Other ‘features’ include a lack of good sides for the cave stuff, as well as broken edges for a few of the platforms themselves, the 4-tile-wall-gem-thing not completely assembled, and some bad connections between walls and ceillings.
Reupload: Some of this is fixed, some isn’t. Still, there are way too many tile bugs for my tastes.
ORIGINALITY IN EYECANDY/IMPROVISATION:
Pretty much nothing to speak of here. Everything is what you’d expect it to be, and while this is generally true with JJ1 tilesets, I know I wouldn’t have minded a little more daring from the author. Ok, so he uses tree branches for both Vines and V-poles, though sometimes not where there were tree branches in the original level, but this does end up looking kind of weird (in the case of the V-poles, anyway). I would have, myself, used the black tree branches from the background, which are more centered and believable for the job.
Reupload: The V-poles are now the black background branches, and the bridges are branches again. Still, there is nothing much that is very new.
OVERALL PROS: Most tiles fit together, no seriously jarring mistakes.
OVERALL CONS: No background or foreground to speak of, some tile bugs, lack of originality, and that absolutely weird secret level OMF bot floating around where it shouldn’t be…
RATING: 6.2 (from 5.5)
GAMEPLAY, DESIGN, AND THE LIKE:
MAIN LEVEL:
The main part of the level is taken directly from Diamondus Warzone, as I presume you already know. Thus, it shall not get a rating.
Reupload: It still won’t.
MODIFIED PARTS OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED FACTORS:
For the most part, the level remains intact in these factors. However, as you might expect, there are one or two differences, the main one being the trees. In JJ1 Diamondus, treetops are solid, and they are solid here, albeit with one ways. In JJ2 Diamondus, and the original level, they are unsolid. I’m not sure how much of a difference this makes on the gameplay, or if it’s a bad thing or not. Second is the addition of some bridges, where tree branches would have served just as well. Third, a few places where there were springs in the original (the top left area comes to mind) have no springs now. This is quite a problem, as it does effect the gameplay. Especially in the case mentioned previously.
Reupload: As far as I can tell, everything that was listed here has been fixed. Nice.
OVERALL PROS: The author keeps this as a tileset change, and not a remake, so the level is essentially the same.
OVERALL CONS: A few bugs, as can be seen in the second category.
RATING: 7.0 (from 6.0)
PLACEMENT; WEAPONS, ITEMS AND BASES:
MODIFIED PLACEMENT, AS FOR THE MOST PART IT IS THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL:
The only thing that comes to mind is that the plasma shield has been removed in this version. I’d have to say this is a good thing, but it’s obvious enough it doesn’t paticularly effect the rating.
Reupload: It still doesn’t.
PROS: The shield is gone.
CONS: None to speak of.
RATING: N/A (from N/A)
OVERALL ANALYSIS OF THE LEVEL BEING REVIEWED, POSSIBLY OBJECTIVE SUMMARY, ETC:
QUALITY OF REMAKE: (IF REMAKE IS THE WORD)
The level is basically the same as it was before, as you will probably know if you read the text preceding this. About the only difference is the graphics, and I think I have covered that factor already. Are there any relevant things that didn’t find their way into the above things? Not that I can think of. An interesting point is that the music is still from JJ2, and not JJ1, but I probably won’t (consciously) adjust my rating for this. Could certainly be worse.
Reupload: No change.
OTHER VARIOUS FACTS OF INTEREST THAT PROBABLY DO NOT EFFECT THE RATING:
The tileset was converted by Toxic Bunny. The author has added a ceilling to the level, lowering the chance of flag bug.
Reupload: No change.
SUMMARY CONTAINING BASICALLY A REPEAT OF WHAT I HAVE SAID BEFORE:
This is an ok tileset change, but tileset changes rarely get a paticularly high rating, and this is no exception. Thankfully, the gameplay remains for the most part intact. If you do download this, don’t download it for the background or foreground. I don’t know what you should download it for, but not that.
Reupload: As previously stated, the graphics are improved a bit.
OVERALL OVERALL PROS: Layer 4’s ok, the plasma shield is gone, flag bug is lowered.
OVERALL OVERALL CONS: A few (mainly graphical) bugs, lack of all that much eyecandy, some springs missing.
RATING (not necessarily an average of the previous ratings): 6.5 (from 5.7)
Diamondus seems to be a popular tileset for editing. Not counting different times of day, this is the fifth version I have.
COLORS: ICK. Pretty much everything is this horrible shade of green, including all the gems in the walls. What isn’t green is tinted green. The background looks terrible, the beehives aren’t all the same color, the blocks ARE, and there are transparency problems.
Pros: N/A
Cons: Icky icky icky.
Rating: 2.0
ADDED TILES: The author seems to have added a single line of tiles at the bottom. It consists of some hand-drawn letters saying this is by LabRatKid, and three alternatives to the Rabbits Stink sign, none of them in front of cave.
Pros: There are new tiles.
Cons: The new tiles are not all that useful, nor do they look very good.
Rating: 1.0
MASKING: Interestingly enough, the author chose to make his own mask, instead of keeping the old one and maybe editing it a bit. This was a major mistake. To put it bluntly, the masking is terrible. Everything is covered in jagged edges, a lot of masking overlaps into nearby tiles (for example, the main cave background has a solid part), it’s doubtful whether the vines will still work, the Diamondus Pole tiles are all messed up, etc.
Pros: No.
Cons: Yes. Admittedly this masking would be almost ok in an original tileset, but for a remake which is supposed to FIX bugs, this is unacceptable.
Rating: 1.0
OVERALL: This is not a paticularly good edit, as you’ll have noticed from the fact I have not been able to come up with a decent Pros section for any of the above factors. I can’t see any reason to use this.
Pros: N/A
Cons: It exists.
Rating: 1.5
This can be deleted. You didn’t needed to make it (getting throught it all in JCS takes some annoying 2-3 hours), because Overlord maked it loong ago, and published it on his site.
Did you know that there is a list on jcsref though?
Ahh… I know how that feels. “That’s overused!” Well, how was I supposed to know that?[This review has been edited by mikeejimbo]
I enjoy being sorta credited for something I didn’t really find. I just took the SCE’s from Overlord’s site (http://geocities.com/atlastsome/jj2/guns.htm) and stuff, so there.
None of this is paticularly new. Some things, though, are highly obvious. Still, I think this is part of what the articles section is for.
Well….It’s ok but it’s useless.
Kinda useless, but fun.
I nice documentary on SCEs(I think that’s the name). A few I didn’t know in there, though I couldn’t get the Early Electroblaster to work (nothing shows up).
Fascinating. It has a lot of good information, or at least interesting. Since I could tell by the infliction of your typing, you didn’t want it rated, I’ll just say that I reccomend (SP?)downloding this.
Trafton, instead of writing such a long and irritating review, you could have just said something about the thing the author actually changed, which is a spring and a copter… it’s totally useless to write all taht stuff about the tileset use, the eyecandy… we all know it, ok?
Ok, now for the real review…
So, you changed the copter with springs. That was a good idea. I actually never had any problems with that copter, and this level has been edited so many times, but it’s still nice to think about fixing problems… I’m glad you changed the shield with a fastfire. Nothing is more irritating than a polish or dutch rookie who doesn’t know a word of english and who always uses that shield…(I’ve got nothing against dutch or polish folks, mind you. I’m dutch myself. But these two nationnalities are very often seen online and not all of them speak english.)
Overall: good you though about it, but it’s not nececarry to download. Evrybody could do it.
I won’t give a rating for this, since all you did was adding a few events.

But when the copter doesn’t respond for people it’s easier to kill them! :(
Its a great idea. But some people have seen this problem a looong time ago and fixed it…
There seems to have been a lot of levels lately which are extremely small, yet do not quite qualfy as a microbattle level. These levels are mostly fairly quickly made and of middling quality. This one, unsurprisingly, is no exception to the rule of mediocrity. A fairly uninspired level by nature, it falls into the realm of below average due to a few moderate to major problems. And, finally, its fate is sealed by a major bug revolving around falling off the level. This level is not an epic by any means. It is more like a picture book with the last page torn out. Now for the review…
EYECANDY/TILESET USE: Jungle is used adequately here. There is nothing that impressive about the overall eyecandy quality of this level. It is a fairly standard Jungle level, which nothing amazing. Eyecandy is decent, and while there are not many tile bugs, there are a lot of questionable tile uses that probably could have been avoided if the author was paying a bit more attention. Again, the problem here is although this probably is the best category for this level (tied with weapon and item placement), that does not necessarily mean it is flawless. Still, this category does come out to be decent, although empty and uninspired.
Pros: The eyecandy is one of the best parts of the level, if that is any consolation.
Cons: The eyecandy is still questionable and oftentimes uninspired.
Rating: 5.5
WEAPON/ITEM/ENEMY PLACEMENT: As I stated earlier, this section is probably tied with tileset and eyecandy and tileset use for the category this level best fares in. Not that this is saying all that much. There is a sufficient amount of ammo to allow for interesting play, although it sometimes goes overboard. Another big problem with this level is a bug revolving around the stomping of the ammo boxes in the “ammo hut.” This causes, because of the sudden animation of all of the ammo, the disappearance of the player’s sprite. This is really an annoying side-effect and should be avoided whenever possible in any level. This level also contains a seeker, which switches the ammo ammount from below average, mainly basic ammo to too power-up oriented.
Pros: Could be worse.
Cons: Seeker powerup throws off balance. Annoying disappearing sprite bug in the ammo hut.
Rating: 5.2
ORIGINALITY: This level is not really original. It is, more or less, just a standard really small Jungle level. Not much more to say here.
Pros: None.
Cons: Not original.
Rating: 2.7
GAMEPLAY/DESIGN: Here is where the level hits quite a few large snags. The first snag is a major bug revolving around the tree which boarders a line of sucker tubes which are intended to send the player hurdling back into the play area. It is not that hard to cause, especially when a player is trying. If you just stand on the tree and walk slowly to the right, you can bypass the sucker tubes and go onto the other side of the tree. From there, the player can not only not get up, but also can fall off a nearby cliff. The land does stretch for a bit after the tree, but eventually comes to a very abrupt end where the player simply falls off of the level. This is quite a big glitch, and while it is fun to exploit, it should have been caught and fixed before uploading. Beyond that, there are a few things fundamentally wrong with this level. Spaz can access the top area without aide of anything but his double jump, while Jazz must find other ways. This is not a huge problem, but it does leave Spaz in much a better of a position than Jazz. Also, there is an area of this level which looks solid but is in the background. This sort of thing has always bothered me, and probably always will. I dislike invisible things that look like they are solid, especially when it is difficult to get back up after you fall. Due to the size of this level, gameplay is not very amazing and it is hard to give information on layout. However, one thing is certain. The level seems disorganized and sloppy, with little of a layout. Not to mention it is small and buggy. Not a good score in this category.
Pros: It is, yet again, not as bad as it could be.
Cons: The major bug regarding the sucker tube and tree should be fixed immediately. The annoying invisible background eyecandy thing. Jazz being unable to jump to the top area. The level’s size. Really, the list goes on. This level is just fundamentally flawed.
Rating: 3.5
REPLAY VALUE/FUN FACTOR: I have played this level online, as another reviewer decided to host it for a while after reviewing it. Most of the play concerned exploiting the interesting tree sucker tube bug and killing the player on the other side. While, at first, this can be fun, this is still not enough to raise my score or anything. Not to mention this gets old after about the tenth game of “transtree tag,” so to speak. After that, this level is reduced to a fairly uninteresting and all together too small Jungle level with an uninspired atmosphere.
Pros: The tree bug thing was sort of fun. Sort of.
Cons: The rest of the level is really dull.
Rating: 3.7
OVERALL (not an average): Yet another miniature battle level, and yet another disappointment. I would recommend next time spending a bit more time on the level, and definitely making something bigger and checking it for bugs more thuroughly. Still, I have seen what you have done in the past, and if you spend time and dedicate yourself to making the level, I am sure you can make something pretty good. However, this just is not it. I am afraid that I can not recommend this for download and I am afraid that this level probably can not be fixed well enough. The idea of the level, along with the many major bugs and flawed layout make this a fairly unforgiving repair prospect and probably a good idea to put in the past.
Pros: It could have been worse.
Cons: Some really severe bugs definitely get in the way of play. This level has too many flaws to list.

Ok, I dont like this much. Firstly, instead of having the sucker tubes on the right side which is a bit slow and annoying, you could of had a wall. The level consists a some floating platforms and stuff. Most of it is empty. The ammo is very poorly placed. Those ammo crates in the warp cause major lag. There is only one carrot, and the level lacks springs. The eyecandy is nothing fantastic. Sorry, I dont reccomend this level at all. It’s late and I have to go so my review ends here. No download rec.
Hmm, well there are several problems here. Like after browsing this level in JCS, I still didn’t see the point of the sucker tubes in the far east side of the level. Also you need more platforms, weapons, food. Add some springs like BlurredD said. And see if you can do some more with the Eye Candy.
This is very bad level. Arena is too small (for 2 players). Little of weapons. Lot of bugs (very hard enemy).
No…
My feeling is this.

Dan, you were supposed to be turned into the frog. It’s part of the story, you have no choice but to exit the level.
Oh well… You asked for it… :)
Two words: too short.
Your first level was good, although it was short, but those are even shorter (at least for me)… Some tileset use mistakes especially in the third level and also in the third level there’s a witch which turns you into a frog and I couldn’t find a way to turn back into a rabbit unless I killed myself.
Your last level I rated 7. Those two are worse than your first battleship level – sadly…
I can’t give much than 5 and I still fell that might be too much sorry
No download recommendation.
1) Try to make the next levels a little bit longer
2) try to avoid tileset use mistakes
3) try to avoid impossible to get out situations :)
