When I saw the title of this I thought about real boss fights. The descriptions of bosses are also fascinating and intriguing. I even hoped to see some unused villians in this pack, though you didn’t use Angel Script…
Layout is rather simple, but I liked the use of trigger zones and moving platforms in the last level.
Tilesets… I don’t like these tilesets at all. Probably overusing the original ones from JJ2 isn’t the best idea and maybe fans of JJ1 may enjoy gaming within these tilesets, but as for me the tilesets you have used are dull and annoying.
Gameplay. In fact, every level represent some kind of obstacle course instead of boss fight. There are no bosses at all! So the title is a little bit confusing. I have to admit that trigger zones are widely used, which adds some new mechanic to the common JJ2 gameplay, that’s fine.
I see that the levels are neat and tidy, whithout bad tiles, seems like they were made wisely like you aren’t a newbee in levelmaking. So I’ll try to rate as high as I can.
Sorry for nitpicking and not recommending download, probably I simply misunderstood your idea…
No, i love it! It’s something between strategy and platformer. Those big lands are way original
Well, well, well. What could I really say?? The last level I review was something I don’t want to replay again. And why? It has a lot of similarities with this pack.
The “rabbit whole” or what you called it was in that level as well and I already hated it. Unlike in JJ1 where these parts lasted for a few tiles, here you spend several minutes to find the right path, which would be a bit more fun if the wall tiles would differ a bit or if there was some kind of sign which showed you which way you should go. Instead you run about until you realize you are back at where you started.
The second thing that appeared here and in the other level as well is the wide open empty spaces with nothing filling them in. No wonder it’s impossible to place enemies well. It’s easier to jump over all of them through the whole level.
I just don’t know why it is so good to put the respawn on all enemies (especially within 4-5 seconds).
Fourth thing, like the other level I played I also noticed the same boring and uninteresting gameplay that I experienced there as well. Even the secrets (which always contained coins) couldn’t help making it better.
Fifth thing, like last time the eyecandy is very plain and simple here as well. Sorry for comparing this to the other level but I felt like playing that one only with different tilesets. Try using better tilesets, or anything better than these which look like they’ve been made with paint. Even the best level creators would need a lot of time to make something interesting out of this.
BUT!!!!!!! I can at least tell 1 positive thing about this pack!!! The music doesn’t shut up for 10 minutes after it’s over. AND the music choice was quite good. I actually liked them.
But so much for the positive things. Sorry to say this but I don’t believe anyone would enjoy this pack. This is unfortunately below average quality. At least try bringing the quality of the original levels or something.
Download recommendation: Sorry but NO!!!
Also, don’t struggle with a story if the levels aren’t good.
I don’t really know what to say about the level. But let’s see.
Eyecandy
Normally it doesn’t bother me if the eyecandy isn’t as good, but this is just too simple. I’m not saying it’s ugly but it’s waaaay to simple. Just the background and some purple hills. You could have given the hills blue and yellow colors as well to give it an Eminem song reference. But anyway this is less than basic.
Gameplay
I don’t know. Maybe I’m bad at the game, but as soon as I started the level I didn’t know what to do. There was a trigger crate which didn’t seem to do anything. I needed to use a cheat since I wanted to see the whole level. Well, maybe somethings wrong with me, but I felt that when the level wasn’t boring it was frustrating. These 2 aren’t a good combination. There were too many open areas. The frog warp part was sort of interesting, though it was rather difficult to do without turning into the frog. And the part where I had to go through the walls with layer 3 covered platforms was just annoying. Seriously, I couldn’t decide when I was going int he right direction.
Pickups
I picked up a lot of weapon types but they weren’t really needed. I didn’t really have a problem with the pickups. But I don’t remember any health carrots in the level. That’s just another bad thing. Didn’t really find many secrets and since the level needs a password I couldn’t check if there were. I don’t think there were gems either. All in all I had the least problems with the pickups.
Enemies
Can’t say they were well placed. Seemed like you just randomly placed them where you felt they were ok, though since there were a lot of open places you couldn’t actually place them well. What was another annoying thing though, was that every enemy respawned in about 6-7 seconds. That won’t make the level better, especially when there are about 12 ravens in one area.
Music
Sorry to say but you just managed to ruin this as well. The music choice is actually good, BUT once it ends there will be complete silence for around 7-8 minutes. OK I actually heard some background noise but that’s just not enough for the music.
I sort of understand what TreyLina was talking about when saying one of my levels were boring and needed to improve because that’s how I was feeling while playing this. Maybe it’s just me and other will think it’s good but I just didn’t enjoy this level. It’s too long, monoton, and when not that’s because it’s frustrating. One of the few positive things I can say about this level is that there weren’t glitches. I’m not certain that the beginning was a glitch, so I’ll count it as if I was clumsy. The other thing may be the boss fight which wasn’t bad, though when I died it crashed the game.
I certainly don’t recommend this to anyone, you can try it once though but if I didn’t like i tat all I don’t think you will. To be honest I would give it 4.2 if it wouldn’t be Christmas in a few days. So here is a 5.2.
I think Bilsy cant go upper or downer :) Is he? If not, he couldn’t be able to fight at the end of the hell level.
A wonderful concept which could have been one of the bests if the game-play, the eye-candy would’ve succeed in the same perfect way. But then again, the music choice and some excellent replies will set this level to your selection, DTD2 managing as an alternative level for your boredom.
Da Full Review
Story:
Two ways of passing with a different ending. It is based on believing in God, which is a downside because not everyone does.
It is simple as that… and I didn’t really like the story. It was too short. Also, the Boss in the second level was a wrong choice; Bilsy was much more in line with the story…
6,5/10
Music:
Fine. Easy points here.
10/10
Eyecandy:
Very bland, especially in the Heaven level.
The Hell level was much better, but still bland at times.
A much harsher rate than previously on the same eyecandy style…
4,5/10
—— Gameplay ——
Level layout:
Just as bland as the eyecandy. I could run through everything except the fly-frog-thing in the Hell level which was extremely annoying and frustrating.
I could run through the both levels with ease, just jump over the pits whenever they were there… There was a lack of hard obstacles/enemies to prevent this.
These levels weren’t any different from your previous in layout.
5,5/10
Enemy placement:
Not enough to kill me. BY FAR not enough. Even on hard, it was very easy.
The Tuff Boss wasn’t really harder than many other bosses, and was very repetitive with dodging the flamerang and placing TNT at the upper right corner.
The Bubba Boss was very easy, actually. Just falling, jumping around and kicking Bubba’s ass.
Respawning enemies made this level easier.
5,5/10
Pickup placement:
Most pickups were well placed. No real complaints about this. Too few at times. Carrots weren’t really needed because of a camping issue (respawning enemies FTW).
8/10
Replay value:
After playing both ways, there is no real reason to replay this except finding secrets…
5/10
45/70 -> 6,4/10

DR: No. Sorry.
Way too easy, Way TOO EASY!!… but I liked the boss fight at the end.
Anyway, I suggest you to download it only if you’re too bored/like Atlantis. So I’ll give it N/A…
There we go.
Story:
Well, it is rather dull, but probably because the episode consist of only two levels. It isn’t a basic “Devan Shell is back” story which is always a good thing.
14,5/20
Music:
Fine, no comments or complaints.
It fits very well with the levels.
10/10
Eyecandy:
Well done when looking to the tileset limits. The Devil and the Gate to Hell could be better though… which definately shows the limit of some tilesets… and there were a few tilebugs appearant in the first level.
8,5/10
—- Gameplay —-
Level Layout:
Well, a few puzzles and – one of them quite hard to find – four secrets for each level. Both levels have a special secret containing an extra live which is more or less hard to reach, especially if you aren’t a good jumper (in the second level). The second level has a Coin warp.
The first level had no real flaws.
There was a minor flaw in the second level in that you can’t get out of a pit after you got the four carrots and food in one of the secrets. (Edit: This flaw is fixed, but it doesn’t really affect the rating in this case)
8/10
Enemy placement:
The enemies which were appearant were very well placed, but there were too few enemies and too many spike pits (especially in the second level).
I liked the Crate Destruct Boss Fight…
8/10
Pickup Placement:
There are no carrots except the four mentioned above when you aren’t playing on easy. Ammunition and foot placement was fine – and the same goes for the other pickups.
8/10
Replay value:
You’ll know the amount of secrets each level has where you can search for. Some of them are HARD to find, but after you’ve found them, the replay value is gone in an instant because the story is rather dull – but there are VERY FEW episodes which have a good story while not suffering in terms of gameplay.
7/10.
64/80
8/10
Penalties:
None.

DR: Yes? Why not.
There are very few flaws to find in this level pack.
I played with Spaz.
Actually i lke this very small episode. Some puzzles, pits, eyecandy, enemies, etc.
But I dont like someting too: Some eyecendy bugs, and Level 2’s second music.
And..: “Where Bad Rabbits Go” is Skulg’s tileset.
7.5/10
DR: Yes ^^
The tileset for WtBoss4 is missing (Edit: Seems deactivated in the game, which is actually very, very weird considering the level is visible on J2O).
Anyway, when talking about the other levels:
Story:
It was quite interesting with new characters and such. Despite it was another Devan Shell story, it was otherwise quite orginal and such. Many levels with story playing such an important role, make the story weigh on the rating. However, some of the levels seem to have NOTHING to do with the story.
35/40
Music:
Awesome and orginal.
10/10
Eyecandy:
Each level was different in quality, also in terms of eyecandy. However, many levels looked well. However, foreground was only used for secrets and the background was often fairly bland.
6/10
—- Gameplay: —-
Level Layout:
Well, there were secrets, everything worked correctly, save the one with the coin warp leading to the ice ammo – getting back was impossible – and that was annoying. That and the levels were easy (on hard), save the third Boss level.
The bosses were orginal, but the first boss is VERY EASY because the level is very and very bland. Especially Lori will brawl through it without effort, making that literally a one-minute level. The second and third boss levels were harder. The second boss level had an enormous death pit, but it was possible to get over it altough you had to be fast.
(Edit: Broke into Bosslvl 4: This level is a lot like Bosslevel 2, only without TNT and also a whole deal easier despite all the death-traps – the tileset was in the download but not activated for whatever reason)
6/10
Pickups:
Fine. The full NRG was always enough considering the low amount of enemies. The enemy-carrot ratio was fine.
Enough ammo, maybe even a little too much. No powerups, but you didn’t need them. It was fine, and very few flaws in pickup placement.
9/10
Enemy placement:
Enemies were too easy to kill, and placed on places were you could kill them without any effort, but fine otherwise. Luckily some enemies respawned in Boss Level 2 & 3, otherwise it was even easier. Yes, I ran through this on hard.
7/10
Replay Value:
The story and the amount of secrets make this replayable for multiple times if you want. As long as everything works properly, that is, considering that isn’t always the case.
9/10
82/100
8.2/10
Penalties:
- A few critical bugs can appear; and the game crashes. It is very rare and happens only in the third cutscene level, but I had to remove the level using JCS. -0,5
- Tileset of the last Boss Level doesn’t work, making the game crash: -0.5
Well, it is still enough for a 7.2. At least.
DR: Yes. Stay aware of the bugs mentioned nonetheless. And also, quite a few levels are easy.
I have made a new review roster to use for myself. This makes it fairly hard to get a high rating from me from now on…
Story:
Single level story. Orginal, has nothing to do with Devan, but lacks creativity and any form of depth – but considering it is a single-level story and because most of the sixteen text strings seem to be used anyway, this doesn’t weigh as much as it could.
Thus, that being said, despite the flaws; 7/10
Eyecandy:
Orginal tileset, but very bland. Not enough foregrounds. Very little use of layer three, only for hiding secrets which is fine when looking to the tileset used. It could still be more.
5/10 —-> 7/10
Music:
Orginal and fits the level. I never heard it before and I liked it. This might be a reason to download the level, just for the damn music file.
10/10
Gameplay elements…
Level layout and such:
The boss in the end failes to come up, and without looking in the editor thanks to that password, the “end level” trigger is nowhere to be found.
Enemies where fine, but could be a lot more; especially on hard. It was a level which is easy to run through save the boll-platform pits which move too fast. Also, there are too many poles near the first pit.
4/10 —-> 5/10 —-> 6/10
Pickup placement:
Ammo was fine, more than enough to deal with the enemies. Enough food and gems. However, carrots and crates were nowhere to be found, even after the level edit.
4/10 —-> 6/10
Enemy placement:
Allright. It could still be better, but it is better than it was when you uploaded the level for the first time.
4/10 —-> 8/10
Replay value:
Secrets, coins, and other stuff are no actually everywhere. You actually can replay this level now to find all the secrets. I found two on the first run but there are likely a lot more. They
Sorry; 1/10 —-> 6/10

DR: Yes, with the new edit. It is a lot better than before and it has enough orginality, at least to play it once, maybe even to play it a second- or third time.
Revieuw editted at 5th April because the level has been changed.
Nice Pack I just want to know why you didn’t want the musics in the pack? It will be better than self dw :)
Ummm…Can you also upload tileset for wtlvl2.j2l
(and for other level, sorry, forgot filename)?
No problem! I will use it in a next game. At the moment I’m busy with my next game: a Boss-fest with home made Bosses!
I’m so sorry not for providing the whole tileset in time.
